    This reminds me of the circus train episode in extreme trains when they replace the wheel.

      Extreme Trains? I’ve never heard of that show, was it on the Discovery Channel or something?

    1:24 I'm guessing there's a hotbox because an axle locked up

      Maybe. I’m not sure what was wrong with the car in the first place.

    It's an OHSA (federal) regulation--not a RR rule--that prevents workers from lifting over 40 pounds.
    Screw jacks like these are used everywhere, from cars to airplanes, all of which have designated 'lift points' designed into the structure.
    Friction in the trucks is in the wheel bearings, not the wheels to rails.

      That’s really cool! As a carman, what does a typical work day look like for you? Are you usually on service calls or do you mostly stay at a railyard and work there?

      @@Southern_Plains_Railfan im out of galesburg, we have a pretty big coverage area we work plus do things in the galesburg yard. Yes we are on call 24/7 pretty much for service interuptions on the main. We cover the ottumwa, barstow, mendota, brookfield, chilli and peoria subs.

      Supposed to gage the sideframes and rolling bearing adapters on a wheel change out.

    That’s an interesting process, looks relatively easy. Especially love that B40-8W, 554 is actually my all time favorite 4-axle dash 8 of the old super. Both mainly both it still has its Leslie RS3L Horn, and attentibg Railfair 1991 at CSRM.
    Personal I think 554 is the ideal 4 axle dash 8 Warbonnet worthy of preservation, love to see that. But who knows, have to wait and see what’ll take place.

      555 would work pretty good I think, and it's in storage, so they wouldn't remove any of their locomotives from service doing that.

    • @Southern_Plains_Railfan
      @Southern_Plains_Railfan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is! I wouldn't say it's easy, but the railroads definitely got wheel changes down to a science! I saw that video you're talking about shortly after I saw 554 IRL. It was so cool seeing that engine in it's prime. Yeah, I think at least one of ATSF's wide cab engines should be preserved, since they were the last locomotives to work for such a historic railroad. We'll just have to see what the future holds.

    Called a 3 piece truck (springs and wheelsets not included in that count), the simplicity of a bolster and two side-frames is genius. It's all held together with gravity and friction. No bolts or fasteners to fail inconveniently. Just basic, straight-forward engineering.

    Big fan of the channel, great video and information. All your videos really helped on a recent railfan trip to Galesburg. We caught this B40 as well, unfortunately it was on the north side of town and hard to photograph. Keep up with the great vids!
