    Great review. I think you're spot on in pointing out that this bike is perfect for what most riders do 90% of the time, which is street riding to work or to coffee shops on the weekends. Sport bikes and adventure tourers are all the rage now, but you pay much more for capabilities that the average rider will rarely use. If I can work the trade out with the dealer next week I will be bringing home a matte black ABS model.

    This guy knows exactly what he is talking about. The last two bikes I got were base on his opinion and I was not disappointed. My CBR650F is perfect for sport touring.

    I bought this bike last year, the 2014 red CBR650f....I love this bike, the ONLY bad thing is you can only buy a full exhaust, no slip ons are available....otherwise another great Honda machine...great video,it helped me decide to get this bike...

    They have some brand new 2014 CBR 650F at a dealership near by me for $6,704.00+ $310 destination charge. Good deal but I wouldn't buy one without ABS. they are sold out of the 2015 models and are getting ready for the 2016 models.Another dealership way across the other side of town has brand new 2014's with ABS Price:$7,879.00* destination and the 2014 with ABS for $8,179.00*. So they seem cheaper in the US than in Canada.

    Hey ... what a cool review; impartial and bang on the money for me. I'm a new rider and wanted a sporty look but not the ride as I'm doing urban riding and no track etc. so for me its the evening and weekend rides that I need with a degree of comfort, but sports look. I've looked about and came across many reviews but you gave the best and its exactly what I am looking for. Well done and thanks for a good impartial review. Cheers

    CBR 650 F is my first bike. It runs great, easy to ride even though I've never experienced ridden a big bike before. Though it might take time to get used to the clutch. By the way, I'm just 170 cm and 55 kg.

      This is my first bike too, it's a super smooth ride and I'm in love with it. The level of comfort is amazing even though I'm 6 foot 4inches and 230lbs! Honda made an amazing bike!

    This bike is an amazing machine, I hardly have any riding experience at all but it's such a forgiving and gentle giant at low rpms. I'm 6' 4" and the riding position is super comfortable. Your review is spot on and if you get a good setup on the clutch and throttle it's a pleasure to ride. Also the 4 cylinder engine sounds mean with a 2 bros exhaust, comparable in sound to my brothers zx6r 2 bros slip on.

      Hi, I just read that you bought a cbr 650 f allthough you didnt have any riding experience before. Now I am in the same situation as you were: I never rode any motorcycle except a 71ps bike during driver license lessons. Initially I was looking for a cbr 500s since a lot of people say it is good to start on a smaller bike even if you are allowed to get hayabusa. but am quite tall (6 foot 3ish) and I do feel more comfortable on the 650 f than the 500r. would you still recommend the 650 f or are there certain negative points you discovered after purchasing it?
      thx in advance and safe trip

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not buy this bike. The only negatives that I found out in driving it, was the relatively low power down low compared to the twins. No the FZ 07 is out, and I really found that one to have a nice broad power range. However...it is more prone to lifting the front wheel, which can and is more intimidating for someone starting out. Also, the price of this bike here compared to others is a bit high.

      It all depends on your comfort level but i would definitely recommend the cbr 650f as a first bike. Like he said there is lower power on low revs, but that is very confidence instilling for learning on. I'm loving my bike and both my dad and brother have ridden it and say that it is a perfect first bike. Unlike the 600cc supersport my brother learned on the cbr650f has a really linear powerband and is super predictable. That being said there is alot of available power; meaning you'll get a much longer use out of it than a 500, but you have to be aware and respect the machine. Overall I would heartily recommend you get the 650f, it is the perfect first bike for tall people in my opinion. I hope this helps😊

    Great video, thanks again.
    Actually - I bought a Honda NC750X because of your review.
    I don't think that counts in Canada because I'm from Germany but still I want you to know that I go to your church :-)
    Keep doing this, it's very much appreciated.

      Thanks for pointing that out!!! For some reason I was confusing the SV 650 SA ABS with the gsx 650 f. You, by humiliating me has made me see the error in my ways. Just for the record, I have only ridden the SV 650, and as such should not be commenting on the GSX 650 F. I will leave that to you my friend who calls me names:)

      I did enjoy the DCT very much but for a tall and heavy guy line me, the lack of power and space did annoy me a bit.
      So I went for something more my size but still DCT transmission...

    Just got mine - before I saw the review, and I have to say you are SPOT ON!! A good review to make me feel even better about my choice is always welcome :) (Not that it was needed.. it's an amazing bike!) I just upgraded from a GS500, and the difference is ridiculous, I could not be happier! For anyone looking at a long-term, intermediate level bike, look no further!
    Also a little note, I think you meant the Suzuki SV650 (the equivalent of the gladius with fairing), not the GSX650F, which is VERY different! I know cuz I was looking between all of those in the category. Either way, I am now 100% sold to Honda, just feeling this bike over the others, it fits in every single way (to me).
    Thanks for the review! Great job!

      Chris Baygin Well thanks man. And yes, I did have the wrong bike. We actually don't even get the GSX 650 F here in Canada, so I was a little off. I try to do these reviews by the seat of my pants so that people get a very real riding impression, unfortunately I get things wrong every now and then.

    • @chrisbaygin8914
      @chrisbaygin8914 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sixthisoverdrive I noticed you referred to that in an earlier comment, and no worries, still a great video! And the GSX I've seen actually, at least in Montreal.. Unless I'm mistaken, or maybe an earlier year.. Either way, CBR still a much better choice! At least for my purposes.. :) the GSX is more for touring as far as I know.

    Great vid. I returned to riding two seasons ago now in my 40's. I came back on a CBR 500RA. I have had a heap of fun on my 500RA but this bike has caught my eye. Can you offer an "in the seat comparison" of the bikes based on your experience... Assuming you have risen the 500RA. To me in simple terms this looks like the big brother with a slightly sportier seating position and of course a whole lot more power... But comments please.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have nailed it man. It felt a little taller, and it was a more rev happy engine. Felt quite a bit better on the highway, I would say mainly from the 4 cylinder and fairing. Thanks for tuning in.

    Awesome review on this bike. I am thinking about getting a sports bike and I'm thinking about either this bike or the Yamaha FZ6R. One of these would be my first bike so currently I'm doing a lot of research to see what would be best for me.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one has a little more down low than the FZ 6R, but the F has a great top end. I think this would be a little more practical in town, but a little slower on the highway. I really like how they made this one look like a supersport as well. Thanks for watching.

    Great review. You have make me homesick with your drive through suburbia! Lol! It is a wonderful bike and it is a toss up for me between it and the cbr500r. Ironically the bike is 1000 USD more here in Thailand, where it is made, than In the US, which really annoys me ! The 500 is a better deal but lacks refinement.

  • @savagemako17
    @savagemako17 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since you were riding a brand new bike...you can't really speak to it's top end rush. Apparently this bike roars when you get over 8 grand. I'd be very surprised it it didn't just walk away from the Kawasaki Ninja 650 at higher speeds and rpms. Down low is supposed to be better than usual, but all mid sized 4 bangers need revs to make power regardless of how they are tuned. Love the color. I'm not a sport bike fan by nature, but I saw this bike in my local dealer(in matte black) and fell in love. Sitting on it really sold me on this machine. It fit like a glove. Sometime in the next few months...this will be mine, oh yes!!

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true that you can't really get the full horsepower out of it till it's broke in, but it gave a good indication that it really opened up at higher revs. After break in there can be as much as a 2 horsepower gain, which I find is achievable by breaking the bike in at higher revs for some reason. I was in third at 10500 and was already doing 155 kms before I backed off. The return trip was only 1st 2nd and 3rd to about 10 k. Like I said in the video, it has more up top than the Ninja, and is almost where the ninja is down low and smoother. Really nice bike, I think you will like it.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, you will be surprised at how well it builds power off the line. Much better than you would think a 650 inline four can achieve.

    • @p3rrypm
      @p3rrypm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really isn't that good. Ride any of the other bikes and then try this and see for yourself.
      Test drive the bike and then order a different color if you want to experience the power. Acceleration is boring on this bike with both the Ninja and Suzuki being far more exciting.

    • @savagemako17
      @savagemako17 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      p3rrypm This bike is about being a great all rounder, not necessarily the fastest or the best at any one thing. It is very comfortable to sit on and feels great for a smaller sport style bike. As for test rides...I've never found a dealer that does test rides, no matter what make they're selling. You tube is the only place I ever see test rides.

    • @p3rrypm
      @p3rrypm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      savagemako17 I get that it is an all around bike but, if you've ridden or read reviews of the other two bikes, you would find they are as well.
      What becomes quickly obvious is that the Honda is way over priced when comparing it to the other two bikes and honestly, the Suzuki Engine is superior in every way.

  • @sicknwrong
    @sicknwrong 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    just need to point out the suzuki 650f is a inline 4 as well and is infact the bandit engine. It just has a hell of allot of weight to it. Its not a twin.

    Alright, Sir. I am in the market as it were and your video came up. I know it's an oldie but these things never really die when good bikes last as long as they do. I'm on a 08 vstrom 650 and I feel the need for something....more. For one at 13kms and about 6k, would you still consider this a good option? I am not entirely up on all the bikes out there but this one tickles a certain fancy. Any thoughts? Thanks so much from Edmonton. Go Oilers!

    Well, it's a great looking bike save for the ugly front disc brake/wheel setup, and I think the motor's power delivery is probably just about right, but the price is too high. Your stats on the other comparable bikes were wrong, but I give you an A for effort since you seem like a nice guy. :)

      Thanks for watching. I like the bikes in this review that I mention. They are ok starters, and are capable as you become more experienced. They also allow you to take longer road trips. You can get the ultimate learners in the 250 and 300 by Honda and Kawasaki, but they are a little anemic as you get more experience.

      If you haven't any experience. If you've ridden bikes but never owned one. If you are a competent rider I would immediately go to a bike like is reviewed here. First time rider, def a 300 kawi or 250 honda.

    • @cagednm69
      @cagednm69 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nathan Smith Start out with the CBR 300R. The Ninja needs more revvs to get going and the single 300 is torquier and has a good light clutch and slick smooth gearbox that will help you start out easier without stalling. You can gain some experience with the light bike and then trade it in for the 650F a year or two later if you want to upgrade.

    Lol! The Suzuki that you say is essentially a gladius with a fairing actually has an in line 4 as opposed to a v twin. This is a great, smooth bike but as a rider who is getting my first big bike, insurance costs could end up being the death of Honda. I'm opting for the ninja 650 (which is a great bike) instead of this purely because I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for insurance. After a couple of test rides, In my opinion, the Honda cbr is a better bike than the ninja 650 but the Honda can't be called a beginner bike unless you can afford it. Just my two pence/cents/yen/rupees

    I haven't had the chance to get back to the dealer since I first saw this bike and the dealer is around 50 miles away so I was wondering if you could answer this for me. I would love the naked version of this bike, but it may not make it to the states any time soon. I thought this bike might look great with the fairing lowers removed and just the cockpit part of the fairing left to remain. You'd see those beautiful pipes and still have a sporting riding stance. Don't know if the upper part of the fairing is attached firmly by itself, or if it can support itself without the lowers. Any way you could find out without to much trouble? Thanks for the video by the way. It's a big help for those of us without access.

      As far as I can tell, the lower fairing is easily removeable. However, the upper fairing isn't. I think it would look a little funny with that little top part and headlight, but that is just my two cents on it. Hope that helped.

    • @savagemako17
      @savagemako17 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sixthisoverdrive Thanks a lot for looking. I blocked out the lower fairing parts with a piece of paper to get a better idea and the bike reminds me very much of a Yamaha fz1 or earlier Suzuki bandit 1200, both of which have fairly scanty bikini fairings up front. I think it might look pretty killer. Guess there's only one way to find out!!.......

      Sup just letting you know I have a CBR 650f I personally love the looks of the CB especially it in matte black. However if you like to go fast and you like the turns I would recommend the CBR due to the riding position. The CBR is designed with 50/50 weight distribution with the rider in that position anyway the CBR is so predictable to ride and confidence inspiring that once you get use to it don't be surprised if you're blowing by your friends on their 600s and 1000s on back roads

      IMHO that's the first thing to do on any bike, but especially on the Honda's. They are always sewing machine quiet. I'm quite sure that there are a few aftermarket cans out there that will fit this bike. It is a pretty popular machine.

      The bike in this review is very easy to ride, can hit the highway whenever you need to, and is not so small that you would feel cramped. The other two bikes (Ninja and GSX) would work as well. If you are from Europe, there might be license issues that would cause you to need a smaller bike. If so, the NC 750 line from Honda is quite good. That is if you like this style of bike. If this is truly your first time riding, you might want to try something with a little less power and a lighter weight. (Ninja 300, KTM 390, CBR 300) Thanks for watching.

  • @p3rrypm
    @p3rrypm 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've test ridden all 3 bikes you mentioned here..
    The CBR 650F, GSX 650F, and Ninja 650F.
    I sold the GSX 650F because it wasn't ABS in the states but, if you can get that bike in ABS then it is easily the best of the 3 in my opinion. The engine smokes either the Ninja or the CBR in power delivery but, the standard versions brakes can be down right scary under normal circumstances as my rear brake would lockup under light pressure (Suzuki mechanics checked it and told it was performing as designed).
    I test drove the CBR 650F and that bike is down right anemic and not really built much better than the cheapo CBR500R. Being the most expensive bike in the lot makes this a tough sell to me because it isn't up to the build quality of the GSX 650F and it cannot match the all out riding of the Ninja 650 ABS either. The brakes on the Honda were almost impossible to lock and at no time did the ABS kick in at all so, that was pleasing.
    I currently own the 2014 Ninja 650 ABS and man, it delivers all around where you want it to. The only area the Honda has an advantage is in the comfort. The CBR has a slightly softer suspension so, it is more comfortable but, not as confident in the corners.
    So, if you're in the market for these bikes... This is my personal preference.
    Suzuki GSX650F ABS
    Ninja 650 ABS
    Honda CBR650F ABS
    Of course, my personal preference for those of us screwed over stateside are...
    Ninja 650 ABS
    Honda CBR650F ABS
    Suzuki GSX650F (Not sold since 2009 and ABS was not an option)

      If you have never ridden anything (dirt bikes, scooters, etc) it can get you in trouble if you panic. Just did some dyno look ups on the bike, and it made 66+ RWHP, and is rated at 87 HP, something seems wrong there, that is a big loss of power, at least the dyno, was set up right, there was another dyno showing 73 HP but the redline was a 1,000 rpms higher than the bike will run. I like the Honda CBR650f, it has a nice seat, but I like the looks of the CB650 better, the naked version, is much nicer looking bike, and a little lighter as well. But the Yamaha FZ-07 seems to be the best, because it's a naked bike, making 70+ RWHP stock, and it weighs under 400lbs wet, and the price is much better too. Thanks for the video. yl

    l bought brand new cbr650f yesterday l took it home on a car trailer I didn't want to ride home so after l got home l started the bike and let t run for 4-5 minutes so it could warm up l went on the bike first gear second gear and or my god this rattle sound like a diesel car so l down shift to first gear to stop and as l was down shifting the rattle sound was much worse so l turned back home first thing l did was l took it back to dealer by the way this is in Melbourne Australia so the mechanic took it inside for 10 minutes and he took it for a test ride and the sound went away and l was shocked like what the fuck and the mechanic said their is nothing wrong with your bike take it home but l dint bring back home l said let it stay overnight and have another look at it and to be true lam turned off the bike already l have to wait and see what's going to happen and the worst thing is the guys in the work shop don't want to believe me. what I think the problem is its the (CCT) cam chain tensioner it happen to a bloke in usa with the same bike cbr650f and his mechanics didn't want to believe him too and he thought the rattle sound would go away when he reached 1000 miles but it went worse. ye long story short l saved so hard to buy a brand new bike and on the first ride this shit happens don't know what to do at this stage

      If you get it back, drive it hard and hope it happens again, so they have no choice but to fix it under warranty.

      I love da glove man. Problem is, when i do a review like this there is so much crap to gather up and shove in the car to go to the dealership, that I forget my gloves. It's almost funny how many times I forget when I do a review!!! Thanks for watching.

      How does it compares with the Suzuki Gsx650f? Based on specs alone, both look really similar on paper apart from nicer swing arm and manifold on the cbr.

      I wish I had the chance to drive a GSX 650 F. In the video I got it confused with a SV 650, which is not the same at all. I would imagine however from riding the big bandit, that it has a very useable power band. Suzuki is known for having some of the best power plants that don't have flat spots. Where it might be lacking a bit is in the details, such as the swing arm you mentioned. I'm guessing here, but it would probably be close to 1k less donaro as well.

    Shame it is underpowered, all 600's and + should have at least 100 hp, especially in line fours... 87 hp is weak, no top end at all.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nice thing about it is if you don't go on a track, the bottom end is just as strong down low as a supersport. I find the supersports only get fun at around 80kms per hour in 1st gear, which is WAY beyond legal limits in a city, by the time you are at the exciting part of second gear, you are exceeding the limit anywhere. Thanks for watching man, we'll post a video of a real 600 supersport here for you some time.

    • @MrMladjona
      @MrMladjona 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you man, and I have to say that you did very nice review, but my opinion is that they could easily get those 100 hp and still have the bottom end. They pulled out 101 hp from the Honda CBR600F, but that is their decision not our riders. This 650F is way more prettier than 600F have to say.
      Looking forward to that 600 supersport video.
      All the best man!

      Thanks for that. I remember that 600 being the other way. Tonnes of top end, and nothing, I mean nothing down low. I like this one in town, I think I'd like the other one on the highway.

      Mladen Scekic Honda did this on purpose if you look at their website this was designed by 20 year old engineers so having something that can go to 11k without going over the speed limit is awesome.

      Yeah...I do these reviews on the fly and missed that one...mostly because we no longer sell that bike in Canada. I got the model numbers mixed up. Sorry about that!

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is, but it might only be in one colour...I mean the CBR 650 F. There is something different in the US to Canada, and I think it's the Black is the ABS version. I'd have to do more research.

      Leonardo Chavez Thanks for weighing in. These bikes here on the flat lands of Alberta and Saskatchewan get used as starters because we have long boring straight roads that are not suited for bikes under 500 cc. I do agree that the 300cc and under machines are better for your first time. I just like to steer people away from starting on the cbr, r6, z636 and other 600cc Supersports with erratic power bands.

      sixthisoverdrive I started on a ninja 300. did I grow out of it? not really. it's all about preference actually. the are people who think a 300 is more than enough and there are who think a 1000 is not enough. I have the 650f, brand new, and I've topped it to 130 mph (I shouldn't have but it was the first time and the last until I fully break it in). great experience. I can't wait to fully break it in to get a higher top speed.
