After my solve which went from the overlook at the Sinks just 7mi. from Lander Wyoming to the home of Brown the cavern down to the rise. Going to the rise walking on the trail which was my creak. No paddle up your creak, I turned right around and started back up my creak and when I crossed Hwy 131 this was my first heavy loads, now I went on my way toward the Sinks and I came to the Sinks parking lot that I had to cross, this was a second heavy loads. I continued on up to the highest point of my creak which led me to the middle of the two signs, the overlook sign and the cavern sign. Standing there my wise was the big sign I had just passed telling all the information about the Sinks, trees, flowers, birds and all the wild life in the area, and my blaze was the top of that sign which in large white letters said, WYOMING WILDLIFE!!! so from my water high looking down I was going to start toward it. I submit there is a reason though - would love to hear your analysis.
Must Listengood You have a keen eye. You saw that I ignored it in my groupings ;) Of course it belongs with Texas, but fits better where it is, as a false start before adulthood. That picture of FF in his A&M cadet uniform-imposter student, saluting like his life depends on it... it just breaks my heart.
@@smellthesunshine4425 - you might have included it in the section with My War For Me since a cadet is in the same class of idea as a private. Further there is a coming of age theme perhaps... in later books he discusses his time in the Yellowstone area after high school as well as working with Donnie at the Golf club... These are coming of age stories in a way also... As he says, his potential was bursting inside him...
Gregory Colvin-Garcia Excellent. It certainly could be lumped together with “My War.” I take your point. But aside from surface similarities, I think they’re very different tales. In SHM he’s 19 and makes an earnest but foolish choice; in MWFM he’s 38 (for much of the story), married, a father, and having to make very tough, life-threatening judgments.
@@smellthesunshine4425 So true but just like the book has a preamble, I believe this is his preamble to My War For Me. As you point out multiple times, Forrest doesn't follow strong conventional structures but I do think he could see his book needed a transition story between High School and his choice to join the military, especially because he leaps far into it -- this along with the hints of course...
@Smell the Sunshine, another excellent video. It is extremely interesting that Forrest chose only these stories from the Santa Fe period, when he had so many available. I think we are in agreement that they advance themes important to him and to the Chase, as well as being (arguably) vehicles for important hints. By the way - you discussed the tea colors, but neglected to mention the Oreos. Now, why that detail? :)
A good storyteller knows details make a story come to life. You don’t drive a car; you drive a ‘41 Plymouth. You don’t eat a snack; you eat a bag of Fritos and a Dr. Pepper. It might just be that. I don’t see evidence that civil rights, black liberation, apartheid, the Rainbow Coalition, the black power movement, etc. has ever been a priority for FF. He’s expressed sympathy for the plight of native peoples. His memoirs contain anti-war/isolationist statements. He’s donated large sums to museums, and his time to education, helping young people. But black power? He said how he voted in elections in the 60s-80s; none of his choices championed those views.
Of course, detail and colour are essential for a good story. But saying '41 Plymouth instead of car, or Fritos and a Dr Pepper instead of a snack doesn't stand out as much as those Oreos. Why? '41 Plymouth, or Fritos & Dr Pepper are 'habitual' - presumably Forrest would have ridden in the one and eaten the others often enough for them to be remembered. But the specific changes in the tea colours? And black tea and Oreos for that singular event, with the lawyer present? To my thinking, these details do not ring true. As for 'freedom' and the video I made on it (FFLC #006) - well, do you think Forrest capable of burying in TTotC a hidden motif that relates to the solution of his poem? (Means, motive, opportunity again?) Where he incorporates a wide variety of examples to reinforce that motif? I wouldn't put it past him to do something like that. There is one retraction I'm willing to make, though: I no longer stand by the interpretation I gave in #006 for the Omega colophon.
Professor Sunshine. I have sharpened my #2 pencil and eagerly await the next class. Well done! Can I get a syllabus for the upcoming classes? Asking for a friend!
