This is by far one of the best audio recordings of a 158 DMU I've ever come across on TH-cam. What a soothing and epic sound! Thank you for what you do! Now all we need is a similar standard of recording of a class 156 😄
Hello! I am currently shuttling between Clapham Junction and Basingstoke trying to get some uninhibited runs to 90mph on the Cummins 400bhp 159/0s. This particular 158 sounds pretty identical to the 159/1 I uploaded on the same day, which I understand has the Cummins 350bhp engine. I’ll be looking for some Perkins engines units to film in the very near future!
Having spent more time on these units I think this is a Cummins 350bhp variant. The Perkins engined ones sound far more like the Class 165 (for obvious reasons!) and the gear change tends to be more pronounced than this one. The Cummins 400hp variant wails a lot more if departing as gently as this one did.
These were mostly filmed between lockdowns in 2020/2021 to take advantage of the extremely low loads. Now everything is super busy and disrupted all over the place - doubt I’ll have the same opportunity again!
Can't beat a 158, a true workhorse.
Great video man💪🏾 very relaxing!
Thanks, glad you like it! There is something quite relaxing about the drone of the engine!
From the outside they sound like an American Kennilworth. Then from the inside they sound like Lorry hydraulic arms lifting bins or skips.
My favorite DMUs! Class 158!❤
My favourite train the class 158 sprinter love these units

Sounds like a Perkins engine unit, looking at the initial standing start perhaps the 400hp version rather than the more common 350hp?

@@KickdownLondon Cummins 350hp 158s are 701-814 and 901-10 Perkins 350hp are 815-861 and the Cummins 400hp ones are 863-72
That looks like a northern 3 car unit it will 752-9 as these have these seats whereas the rest have new seats
Think these must be the ones with the tables set too low that I try to avoid!
I have never been on a train with 1 empty seat never mind this lot !

*_This thing cannot accelerate to 100MPH!?_*
Actually a 158 can reach 100 mph but it’s limited to 90 mph
