- In Myanmar's Rakhine state, another ethnic group besides the Rohingya has been fighting for its rights and recognition.
The ethnic Arakan people have been battling the Myanmar government for decades, and in 2009 founded their own armed group, the Arakan Army, in 2009.
Thousands have fled the violence into neighbouring Chin State and are now living in camps because of the recent spike in violence.
Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports.

Myanmar is in the midst of a civil war. Neighbouring Bangladesh can exploit this situation. One US lawmaker even suggested making Rakhine part of Bangladesh.

That was the point of the Rohingya attacks in the 1940's to begin with. The Rohingya wanted to seize Rakhine for themselves and then join Bangladesh. The Rakhine Buddhists didn't want that, nor did the government wish to lose territory to Bangladesh, and the counter attacks followed. This happened many times and finally the Rohingya have been pushed out of Rakhine altogether. The desire to seize Rakhine has been catastrophic for the Rohingya and they aren't likely to ever be welcomed back.

Can anyone tell me how many rebel armies are there in Burma? They seem to be everywhere, north, south, east and west. Taken the world as a whole, Burma should win the gold medal by the number of rebel groups inside its borders.
Cecilia Peng pretty much every ethnic minority tribe has its own rebel army. They have all been oppressed since independence. I was kidnapped by the Shan State Revolutionary Army, the Katchin independence Army and the Lahu independence Army, all living in the same camp.

PS. From my experience, the tribal armies are poorly equipped and exaggerate their numbers ten fold. They also squabble with each other. There are ideological differences, the Shan State Revolutionary army are communist and in alliance with other tribes, but the Shan State Army is facist and despises true tribals.

Why would they look like rohingya? Arakan(rakhine) ppl r neither rohingya nor burmese, although many do speak burmese and have similar traditions. They r an ethic group in myanmar. And not all of them support the Arakan Army. Many rakhines think that these leaders r not to be trusted as they r funded by chinese.
Off course. Rakhine and Myanmar are descendants of Sino-Tibetan people and the language too. Bangladeshis are the descendants of Indo - Aryan people. And their language same. So they don't look alike.

They migrated from Chittagong... His travelled story was titled "On the way of Mongdu"...The story is taught as part of national Curriculum. Burmese government are successed for divived and rules .. In Rakhine they divided Rohinga and Arakan race, meanwhile Burmese frist did Rohinga ethnic cleansing now going same thing with Arakan . if Rohinga and Arakan were united, Burmese army couldn't occupied their home land by force.

Native Arakan was a Hindu empire and they spoke an Indo-Aryan language similar to that of the Rohingya. The inscriptions and architecture of the empire is similar to that found in bengal, Cambodia and Indonesia which was also ruled by Indians before the arrival of mongoloids from China. It was Hindu, then Buddhist and then Islamic, the same as the history of bengal! The Rohingya re native to Arakan! And these people are Burman claiming Arakan- they look identical to the Rakhine people!

The burmans call them ‘Bengali’ because they say their existence in Arakan came from the British displacement during the 1800’s and that they never existed in Arakan before that. This is untrue because they do go as far back as the 7th Century! But yes many were also brought by the British during the colonial period to work and many remained in Arakan but many also LEFT.
The name Rohang dates back centuries, they even had other names traders would call them- this is short for Rohingya. Why can’t anyone except their identity as a Rohingya which was used as far back as the 7-9th a century. I don’t see anyone calling a Gujarati Tamil or vice versa. And yes they go as far back as the 7th century and the Rakhine came into existence in the Arakan region during the 10th century! The nama Rakhine was given to the yellow Mongoloids living in Arakan by the Burmans. They are the same people but they are separated by different migrational waves of Chinese to the region(burmans). So these burmans(Rakhine) migrated from what is mainland Burma to Arakan region- which was already inhabited by the Rohingya! They are burmans look at their face! They are not Indo-Aryan which is what the civilisation of Arakan was and it’s people! Go study authentic history you idiot! I’m a historian and their is much for this! I’m not even indian but I’m a human rights activist and I’ve been studying the Rohingya people and their history for over 5 years now trying to understand their people, their history and most importantly, who is telling there truth. You have a very narrow point of view which is is clearly fuelled by an anti-Muslim rhetoric. The Khmer civilisation was also Indic people to begin with and so was much of Indonesia. Should we call those Indic people that date back to those regions in Southeast Asia Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati? And why do the current inhabitants not look like them?? Because they all came from a MUCH LATER wave of mongoloid Chinese expansion!
