I'm not sure if he should keep them short, or not--the actual speed of info conveyance is quite amazing, on its own. Like I'm reading those Prit Buyar books about the Eastern Front, and your brain glazes over, some places.

    • @anyasis5720
      @anyasis5720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I disagree and here’s why:
      Technically it is known as Operation Anvil but to state that that’s it’s more known name is simply incorrect. Operation Anvil was only named as such for it was to be carried out alongside Operation Sledgehammer (now known as Operation Overlord) but due to a lack of available resources it was called off.
      Whens’t the allies saw that they didn’t have sufficient resources to supply the allies due to the ports in Normandy being clogged up they decided to reconsider on Anvil and then finally went through with it. Two Weeks prior to its execution they decided to rename it to Operation Dragoon as it really doesn’t make sense anymore as it no longer coincided with Sledgehammer. So not only was it not known as Anvil during its execution it also has been called Dragoon for much more time.

    I think this helped me to understand why the allies thought that Market Garden would be a success, from this perspective it does look like the western front is completely broken and that it would have led to a significant shortening of the war.

    • @willkp50
      @willkp50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      To be fair, I think Market Garden did have a real possibility of success. It just happened to be that everything that could have possible gone wrong went wrong. It’s impressive how close they got to crossing the Rhine considering how many factors had been tipped in the German’s favour.

    • @willkp50
      @willkp50 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@DeepCFisher Yes that is true. However, I think that despite that, the plan could have succeeded had it not been for the weather, the 82nd failing to take Nijmegen bridge and the SS at Arnhem (all of these combined). Furthermore, I think that you can explain Allied ignorance through political concerns. The British were growing (imo understandably) increasingly worried due to their lack of forces on the Western front and feared that despite fighting since the beginning of the war, the Americans would overshadow them in the peace conference (as they ultimately did). Furthermore, the British had essentially run out of manpower and so were desperate for a successful, British led operation which could shorten the war. While this doesn’t excuse the operational failings of the British high command, it does explain why everyone was so willing to back Market Garden

    it's so cool having a personal connection to one of the bubbles on the map. My grandfather was in the 35th Infantry Division and was wounded in the Battle of Nancy. For the rest of his life he did not want any of his children or grandchildren joining the military and encouraged my older uncles to register as conscientious objectors to avoid the draft (which they did), though he was proud of my cousin who served in Iraq.

    My grandfather grew up in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands that were the only parts of Britain that was occupied by Nazi Germany. He once told me he used to go to bed and watch the coast of Normandy, only 14 miles away, glow in a fiery blaze on the horizon and go to sleep with the soft sound of artillery in the distance. Jersey and our sister island of Guernsey were occupied during the fall of France in 1940 and as you will able to see in this video, the Channel Islands will remain occupied in Nazi German hands until May 1945 whilst surrounded by Allies. This means that Jersey and Guernsey were one of the last places to be liberated from Nazi occupation.

    Due to the massive amounts of myth that surrounds the Battle of Caen and the breakout from Normandy its worth noting that whilst the British and Commonwealth were facing eight panzer divisions and several heavy tank battalions the Americans were facing barely a fraction of that with the units and tanks that were put in front of them usually being at half strength and rotated out of the Battle of Caen, they themselves replaced at Caen with fresh troops. Montgomery recognized this and kept the pressure on the Germans at Caen whilst ordering the Americans to break out in Operation Cobra against the weakened German defenses in the west.
    Of course after the war several American generals disgracefully obscured this fact and used their memoirs to paint the British and Commonwealth forces as incompetent at Caen as it would support their later assertions that their own mistakes were to blame on 'useless allies' than their own mistakes.

    • @willkp50
      @willkp50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be fair, it was relatively easy for the American’s to criticise Monty because of his own arrogance. Had he been honest with Ike and said that while he did initially aim to capture Caen in order to break out, he then adapted his plan in July to draw German forces away from the US frontline, a large amount of the criticism levelled towards him would have been ignored. It was the fact that Monty lied and said that drawing German forces away from Avranches had been part of his plan since June 6th which caused resentment among the Yanks and made historians critical of his actions in Normandy. That being said, in my opinion I think a lot of the criticisms against him regarding the Normandy campaign are very unfair and reek of Anglophobia; as the man who would’ve been held responsible had Normandy been a failure, he deserves to be held responsible for the success of the campaign. As for the American generals such as Bradley and especially Patton, I think they are given far too little accountability in regards to their own mistakes; I’d argue that Hurtgen Forest and Metz were significantly more incompetently planned and led offensives than Market Garden and Caen.

    You made a "flashback" to show the landing in Southern France... Maybe make another (few seconds-long) small flashback to show the bloody taking of the port of Brest in Brittany, which discouraged the US troops from taking Lorient which held as a submarine port until the end of the war?
