Only three and a half hours today? Must be to save energy for next week's eight hour podcast, eh? Maybe since it's under four hours today Jack can use that extra time to take his laptop on that date to the Italian restaurant.

The sheer amount of gooning references on this podcast over the past few weeks is nearly enough to bring a tear to my eye.

For March Madness, there's one word to explain its popularity. BRANDING. It's pushed as hell and one of the only yearly major tournaments that can still have genuine surprises in it. So some people get genuinely excited for it. It has evolved into more of a holiday though with all sorts of places and people using it create material/events/sales etc.
Also College sports are so popular because they are the only place in major sports where people are still playing for something. So everybody is willing to go at it 100% cause they still haven't guaranteed their entry into the Major leagues. Also, people have a lot of pride for their alma maters and local colleges.
Good thoughts! Additionally, March Madness became huge in part because it was a socially acceptable gambling opportunity. It is fun when everyone in an office or a dorm is invested in the pool. And being played in the spring just before school letting out seems to play off the optimism of the season.
The tournament format makes for compelling television. The networks would often profile the hot players to kind of give the viewers a protagonist or antagonist. Drama would get played up to hook you emotionally.

In the US, college sports, particularly Division 1 basketball and football, are hugely popular. Alabama football and Uconn Basketball are similar to how big Premier League teams like Manchester United or Liverpool have massive followings in the UK.
Imagine if your position in the Premier League (regular season) determined whether you got to compete in a massive tournament. That's sort of like March Madness. Instead of just one league, it involves 68 college basketball teams from all over the US. After a separate tournament where they all compete in knockouts for their league title, the best go-to match madness to crown the National Champion.
The excitement comes from the unpredictability. Sometimes, a lesser-known team pulls off a major upset against a favorite. It's also a stage where young talents shine and become famous, like how Michael Jordan made a name for himself playing at North Carolina before his NBA days.
So, Americans love March Madness because it's a mix of intense competition, underdog stories, and a platform for rising stars.

We have finally arrived at the weekend that hosts the biggest show of the year… NXT Stand and Deliver! Oh, and Wrestlemania I guess. Wonder if “Hollywood” Jack the Jobber will go on a date with his laptop to an Italian restaurant to celebrate this momentous occasion!

Just got to the Hall of Fame segment and saw Invincible was trending, well deserved after an incredible series 2 finale
I think there is a handful of factors that makes March Madness special. First the speed of the tournament. In 3 weeks you go from 68 teams to 1. Second is volume of games you get to watch. During the first two rounds, you can spend Thursday to Sunday watching basketball from 10am to 10pm. Another reason we care is because we all filled out brakets and want to see how many we guessed correctly. Like the NFL and fantasy football, brakets give us a reason to watch games we have 0 stakes in and know none of the players just to see if the team we picked won. College basketball is also very entertaining because since the players are younger they play more free and are prone to more mistakes. Another reason is the cinderellas or the "FA Cup Magic" as you put it. As you know, each team is given a rank from 1-16 and theres something special to watch a 14 or 15 seed filled with future accountants beating a squad littered with future NBA players. This leads to my final point, for the smaller schools, getting to be on a national stage. My favourite team the Montana State Bobcats have won their conference the last 3 years gaining them automatic entry into March Madness and being from Canada I can only watch them if they make March Madness.

Not really big in to it but I believe the big thing about march madness is gambling it's popular in the states to submit predictions on how the brackets will play out and if you correctly guessed the whole tournaments results (each games winner and the tournament winner) you get a huge jackpot.

It's interesting to hear the lads discuss how bringing someone like the Rock back for a short run to get lapsed fans back in can be turned to the company's advantage because the existing product around him is good enough to hook those fans and keep them watching even after the Rock is done with his run. It's even more interesting to hear NXT supersimp Ross make this point, given that NXT had that spell not too long ago where they brought in main roster talent to boost the ratings and then utterly failed to hang on to any of those viewers after the main roster talent stopped appearing. Which, by Ross' very point made here, means that NXT isn't good enough to keep any of those viewers.
I think a lot of the AEW march madness mentions are also because TBS/TNT have the broadcasting rights and they want to remind you so.

A big reason college sports are so big in the US is because how big it is. Most professional sports are reserved for the big cities and much of middle America doesn't have any within their state. But people do have high school and college sports. Also betting and with March Madness brackets. People love a bracket

Alright, on college sports in the US: The US holds within it so many schools, and there's a good TikTok about how traveling in the US is akin to traveling in Europe writ large, that paired with how much college has mattered culturally here in the US, it's been a big deal for well over 100+ years. Also, historically, colleges in the US began as ostensibly trade schools (for instance I'm from Michigan and Michigan State University began as an agricultural school whereas their main rival, my Michigan University Wolverines, have become globally known for science/engineering/healthcare and even graduated a President of the US). Therefore rivalries have been fostered nearly 150 years (Michigan's first football game was in 1879). Between how varied culturally the states are and a century-plus of traditional pomp and circumstance, college football especially is hugely important to a lot of people.

Also Jack it’s the tournament that declares the national champion of college basketball for the year full of upsets and passionate play from players who know they won’t make NBA so this is it for them

There’s a lot of upsets and it’s kind of just a crazy time of year people are moving up and down the NBA draft boards based on how they play in the tournament

He came across as sincere, for better or worse, he told his stories as he perceived them. I think if nothing else he certainly can’t be described as an unhinged mad going off on AEW for the sake of revenge. He told his story from his point of view.

Completely agree with Jack in regards to employers having to honour their contracts. If they're not using the talent, that's on them. They should still have to pay out. But this is America, and in America employees have zero power or rights.
