- How to remove door hinge cap. Simple easy way to remove hinge caps that have been painted over and over. Do yourself a favor remove your hardware before you paint the end result will be much more professional looking and the discerning eye will notice . You may not live in a mansion, but that doesn't mean you need to look like it. It's the little details people will notice and set you apart from the rest.

Thank you! Mine was so painted over, I didn't even know there WAS an endcap on the bottom. It still took about 30 minutes to knock the endcap off and then another 30 minutes to knock the pin out. LOL. I'm gonna find whoever painted this hardware and have a stern word with them.

Robert Turner you are welcome. I don't like it when painters don't take the time or the home owners and paint over the hinges just mucks up the hole thing. I personally like the contrasting of the hinges it add that extra to the over all look. but thats just me. Glad to help

Great tip! I had some brand new antique copper hinges, and I needed to put a door stop on the hinge pin, but didn't want to mar the hinge cap. Using the diagonal pliers as you showed worked great. Thank you.

you are welcome. So glad to help. I've seen others use pliers to pull and i cringe. Vintage hinges are the very reason I use a different method. This saves the cap and keep the vintage hinges looking great. These were at my aunts house i was going through prior to her putting her house on the market. i removed all the hinges striped the many layers of paint off brought them back to original luster. just a added touch that had 3 people within the first 4 days on the market. having a bidding war. Why do you need to remove the cap? Can’t you just pop out the top long pin? Or does the bottom cap holding the long top pin somehow?
If you want to try and grip the pin itself and tap it up to remove that is your choice. the point is too many people just paint over the hinge and trying to remove the pin is nonexistent due to the paint making a barrier over it. the cap will have less resistant's, (its just a cap). The pin will be harder to remove due to all the resistance through the hinge. work smart not hard. Not all hinges have a bottom cap. I like them just because it give it a finished look. cap on top (the pin) and cap on bottom for me just looks complete.
@@TheShackHome after some time I ended up having to cut the top of the screw in order to take the pin out with a saw… I guess you can use the Dremel as well… it was solid :(… it was from antique cabinet. It worked out better because I can reuse them since I went to a bunch of stores and nobody sells these hinges anymore. And now I have the same hinges and I can remove the doors:) if needed. great way to save what you need. Once I am done, I will post a video in order to help others. انا عندي مسمار المفصله صار يخرج من مكانه بعد ما ركبت رفاس او دفاش للباب الان كل اسبوع لازم ادق المسمار عشان يرجع امانه عليكم اريد حل نهائيه يمنع خروجه مره ثانيه .
Not enough room on mine to get the pliers to bite. Rounded bottom cap is barely showing.
CappsJD sometime you need to used a utility knife and scrap some of the paint off to find the cap line
