Thanks so much for this video! I will NEVER FORGET sitting in my family’s basement in 1976, as a 17 year old closeted lesbian, watching The War Widow on PBS. Any lesbian from that era is well aware of how little queer content there was for us, let alone happy queer content. This production had a profound effect on me as I realized that there was hope of having a happy and loving life with another woman. I will be forever grateful to all those involved, from start to finish, for bringing The War Widow to life. BRAVO!!🙌🌈❤️
I have a lot of love for this teleplay. It made quite an impression when I was a girl just figuring out who and what I was. Many thanks to the gay man who wrote it and to the actresses, who probably risked their careers 50 years ago.
The link has an interview with the writer and one of the actress and interestingly it wasn't even a thought in terms of risking her career and apparently had no impact that she knows of which was a surprise to hear.
Great video! The War Widow is one of my favs. I always love the scene where Amy finally stands up to her mother and confesses her love for Jenny. Also the moment right after Jenny's love confession. Jenny thinks Amy has gone off to bed but then we see Amy's hand touch her hair (or is it her face?) .Either way I've always read that scene as not just Amy's acceptance of Jenny's love but her letting her know she shares her feelings and that they were together for the first time that night. Cause the very next scene, well it's like Amy has been broken open and is so joyous and happy.
Agreed, powerful scene. I love how as she's talking to her mum, she says 'I love Jenny, I hadn't thought of that" as if she's suddenly realised the important part - that she's falling in love.
I agree, that hand caressing the cheek was about as sensual as you could get without actually showing anything at all. Brilliant piece of cinematography. 😊
I have been wanting to see this film since 1976- I had no way of seeing this back then, but I sure heard about it from friends. Anything "lesbian'" was still far out of the norm. I am 75 now and so glad that you posted this on your site. So, I watched it yesterday only realizing after watching the credits that my now deceased wife perhaps worked on preserving this as she was in the preservation department of UCLA film . She met her second husband Tom Ancell (died too) who worked in Sound at KCET who was the sound engineer for this film! They married in1976 the same year of this film. Mrs. Ancell obtained a divorce (finally) and married me in 2014 only to die of Endometrial cancer in 2017. I was privileged to have been her friend and then wife. We have our own story that is pretty fantastical too. Cheers!
I thought Jenny was played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio at first! I looked up the actor because she looked so familiar, and saw she played a lot of mom roles in big 80s movies.
Nice to see a thoughtful review of a groundbreaking film/video - especially for its time - that is often overlooked. Wikipedia calls this U.S. television's first lesbian love story.
Definitely the first queer story I ever saw. I waited until my parents weren’t home to watch it, in the dark. Now I realize my folks wouldn’t have cared. 😂😂😂
In the 1970's Gena Rowlands (RIP) played a lesbian who lost custody of her children and in the 1980's she did a Movie called An Early Frost about a woman who finds out that not only is her son Michael is diagnosed with AIDS but was in the closet for a very long time.

Think Pamela Bellwood was still on “Dynasty.” Her agent problem had a stroke. 😂
Thank you for this! I had never heard of this film until you made this video. I'm looking forward to watching it!
I hope you enjoy it!
