Back in the 90's, I remember Pete (on TV) saying that he just recently noticed how much space (or room) that Keith's drumming provided him (for his Guitar work). Pete was even more impressed having fully understood what Keith had accomplished musically.
When you went to see the WHO you went to see Keith the 'juggler' too! In the early days at the WHO shows he had sticks flying in the air, catching them on beat as they destroyed their instruments by the climax of the show. He whirled and twirled those sticks to the beat. He had sticks that reflected light so you could see them. He went through quite a bit of drum sticks in a show. I'm 70 years old this was back in the 60's. It was all a part of the show with Pete doing his gymnastics.
Keith is one of the greatest rock percussionists to ever sit behind a kit AND he truly lived more than most of us ever will in his short but awesome life ! RIP Keith ✌️
Being a huge Moon fan, and a drummer...there's no doubt Keith Moon was the one of the greatest rock and roll drummers of his time. Even tho todays drummers are far more technically advanced...no one lived the rock and roll lifestyle like him...NO ONE!. Rock and roll=Keith Moon!
Who cares who's the better drummer! Keith was the best fit for The Who. And no matter what you think of him as a drummer he made one hell of a rockstar. I enjoyed the vid.

That’s because when he started with a new sound he influenced others to copy that sound and combine that with age health. It’s the same with anything. Unique copied old ..
Austin Young Agree, Keith play drums like it was a keyboard sometimes and was the musical link onstage with The Who. I can never decide if Keith or Bonham was the greatest rock-drummer, one day I say Keith the other Bonham.
He IS my favorite drummer..He ALWAYS looks like he was an extension of the drums itself... Watching him play "A Quick One" during the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus is quite a performance.
@mrs.perkins That performance of A Quick One by The Who is INCREDIBLE!!! Gotta see it to understand exactly why. Their energy n tight sound coupled with their showmanship is the best hard rock performance I have ever seen. Long Live The Who 👊💥❣
When we were learning how to play instruments in the late 70's early 80's, we of course listened to all the greats, Zep, Who, Sabbath, Doors, etc. We never compared, they were all in the same rare air, Bonham, Moon, Ward, Jones, Butler, Entwhistle, etc... I don't understand where it comes from when people feel the need to compare. They were all great and their style helped make the band they were in. Im hoping that happens again with music someday. Such an exciting time.
Perfect. Averages around 155 BPM but he ALWAYS rushes through the fills, "a waxing and waning tempo" as dishonest musicians will say, and it couldn't sound better. This kind of gem has modern studio work driving me mad.
I don't know what's more hilarious: the video or the discussions going on in the comments? cigarettetenor, if You created this video: it's fuckin brilliant!
Pete called him "sloppy". Listen to him play on the original Tommy on 'Sparks' and on the 'Underture". First he holds it all together and suddenly you've got a virtual drum lead. Try that on a Townsend composition. My view, Moon is the best I ever heard.
Man...Moonie the Loonie... I'd give all my savings to witness this.. f'n rad dude attend an AA meeting and sit in the center of the room & make these grunts and groans while high beaming every person surrouding him in the room EPIC!
Ringo and Keith were v close pals, so collaboration was always possible, I guess. On Keith's solo album Ringo, plus several session drummers played; Keith sang and only played drums on 3 tracks, apparently. He probably just wanted to get drunk. Listen to Young Man Blues off Live at Leeds by the Who; you'll begin to realise the limitations of Ringo.
i have to admit that you are the first one to reply properly to me...then i have to agree that he was a showman and the perfect drummer for the who...but saying that he's the best ever is not right for everyone who can play way better and can come up with more creative things than he did...agree?
It is him. He used a hi-hat on this song, you can see from the video. This was his last album and the hard living was beginning to show. This shows, while he was a brilliant drummer, his timing wasn't great. It was his pure energy and natural style that will never be matched. I've heard a lot of drummers try to imitate Keith and invariably they don't 'get it' - the fill that finishes at 1:12 is typical - no one else can imitate this kind of fill and what you hear there is very 'Keith'.
This might be an odd comparison but I hear a lot of Stewart Copeland in his style. I think it’s the way he stays on top the beat always and full of energy. The changes in tempo in this sounds like the “So Lonely” isolated drum track. Their fills seem more like part of the beat
@MadHighway depends on which version of Who Are You you have the extended album has 2 separate versions including a lost mix which has a completely different verse. the greatest hits album has the radio friendly version which says hell instead of fuck and its about a min shorter.
that's what Keith used to say: "I'm the best Keith Moon Type drummer in the world" he had developed a new style of drumming combining many different influences and then melding them into his own, he could do this because he did not have a music teacher telling him he could not, that it wasn't proper, ot the right way to do it as far as I am concerned there is no right way learn the fundamentals and develop your style, learn as many grooves as you can, country, swing, rock, fusion
Everybody quit arguing and just start listening. It's the sound of an iconic drummer..who cares if it's in or out of time....all great rock speeds up and slows down. It's ok as long as the rest of the band does it at the same time.
Technical skill is something anyone can learn. It's not important. Creativity is. Don't forget he played like no other drummer had ever played before him in the sixties: loud, wild, unpredictable, at the forefront. He is the first rock drummer, in that aspect. There is not a drummer on this world today that doesn't owe him thanks for making the drums MORE than just a way to keep time, including Bonham or Ringo for example, who've both admitted to this many times.
I started playing guitar at 11 years old. At that time, I was into all the guitar heroes..and their bands. Black Sabbath was my first love. But I loved The Who. “The Final 24” episode really made me respect him more. Rest In Peace Mad Cap
I have some technical knowledge of drumming. Enough to know that if the Beatles had Neil Peart or Billy Cobham or Dave Weckl for a drummer they would only need one more thing, a drummer! Ringo was absolutely the best and only drummer to get the Beatles sound the push it needed. Perfectly. He was/is beyond a great drummer, he's a fantastic drummer. Having said that, Ringo would be equally as lost behind Miles Davis as Philly Joe Jones would be behind the Beatles.
Slammintone S I just don't like Ringo's sound or style but each to their own. Also listened to some pros discuss him at clinics but I just don't get it. Bonham of course but not Ringo.
Just say that you are a huge fan of the Beatles so you admire every single member of the band. You said that Ringo was the best fit for the band he was in. I cannot agree more. A sloppy drummer goes well with a collectively soppy band that happened to be named the Beatles. You also said that the great drummers you mentioned wouldn’t be a good fit for the band you love. I agree. They are more suited for more sophisticated music.
sangho gee I disagree that the Beatles were sloppy, they may not have had very complicated music(which is not even true) but they did what they did very cleanly

He looks like a small child playing with his two older brothers . They are adorable :-)
Exactly my thoughts.
LOVE the rawness and energy in Moon's playing. His sense of feel was remarkable too.
Cool clip.
that Mooney for ya... and we will never see the likes of him again.... one of a kind,!!.
Sorry but he's mediocre
What a hero! Lovend the man! X from Holland!
I love the faces he’s making at the drums
I love all the little things he does on here, you can really appreciate it more with the track isolated
Amazing. . Keith Moon never fails, love him
The yelling is hilarious. And awesome!
Who cares who's the better drummer! Keith was the best fit for The Who. And no matter what you think of him as a drummer he made one hell of a rockstar. I enjoyed the vid.
Perfectly imperfect
bloody hell ... this was keith when he wasn't at all in the best shape of his life - probably the worst ... and he stills manages to blow my mind... genius ... he plays his heart out and gives it everything he's got till there's nothing left... literally till the end and ultimately the end of him ...... jesus this man !! o.o
The older he got the more "normal" his drumming sounded.
@@JC-sj2pd in Tony Fletchers "Moon" 1999, Keith never practiced or even had a drum kit in any of his many homes.
That’s because when he started with a new sound he influenced others to copy that sound and combine that with age health. It’s the same with anything. Unique copied old ..
When I think of all the drummers I have watched over the last 61 years good ,bad or in between this guy was always my favorite .
Nobody could duplicate this..Brilliant drumming.
Austin Young Agree, Keith play drums like it was a keyboard sometimes and was the musical link onstage with The Who.
I can never decide if Keith or Bonham was the greatest rock-drummer, one day I say Keith the other Bonham.
Bad drumming
He IS my favorite drummer..He ALWAYS looks like he was an extension of the drums itself...
Watching him play
"A Quick One" during the Rolling Stones
Rock n Roll Circus is quite a performance.
@mrs.perkins That performance of A Quick One by The Who is INCREDIBLE!!! Gotta see it to understand exactly why. Their energy n tight sound coupled with their showmanship is the best hard rock performance I have ever seen. Long Live The Who 👊💥❣
Happy birthday keith!!!
Stick around. Daddy's comin...
Perfect. Averages around 155 BPM but he ALWAYS rushes through the fills, "a waxing and waning tempo" as dishonest musicians will say, and it couldn't sound better. This kind of gem has modern studio work driving me mad.
Interesting, thank you
Yep, the Human Element in today's music no longer exists......
So he's sloppy and you paint that as good ?
What an amazing artist of music 🎶
The inspiration for “animal” from the muppets 😂
Thought that was actually Steve Gadd
Krupaaaaaaa.
Thought the inspiration for animal was Ginger Baker?
I think it was Mick Fleetwood that did that?
I saw keith moon with the who in memphis ... years ago.
amazing.
If it weren't for Keith Moon, rock 'n' roll drumming wouldn't be what it is today... period.
Nah
@@kcorpora1- can you play like this? I'm gonna say no
@@FazMaTaz what you say and think and feel has no bearing lol!
The screaming must have relieved the tension in trying to lay down this track. One of my Who favorites.
This guy definitely landed on the spectrum.
Which one? lol

He definitely had aspbergers.
Roger Daltrey stated in a number of interviews that he thought Moon was autistic. He was probably ADHD as well - the two often occur together
Major ADHD, and I mean major! Probably needed at the least a diet change and rehab.
Oh my God he’s gorgeous and his drums 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜we love you an miss you Keith Moon
What a character. And what a drummer.
You have been reported for hate speech and homophobia
@@p-squash8846 Good.
he was great. loved his drumming the best in quadrophenia. those rolling toms
were awesome.
I don't know what's more hilarious: the video or the discussions going on in the comments? cigarettetenor, if You created this video: it's fuckin brilliant!
God I love that little kid comin out about 45 secs in .. Great inspiration on how to not give spit about fame.. Bless him..
Even like this, in the last years of his life, Moon was better than almost every drummer ever. He was fantastic, best drummer of all time.
I'd give all my savings to witness this..
f'n rad dude attend an AA meeting and
sit in the center of the room & make these
grunts and groans while high beaming every
person surrouding him in the room
EPIC!
There is nothing like watching Keith Moon play the drums. He was amazing!!!! RIP Keith
One thing you cannot accuse Mr Moon of never having fun or enjoying playing the drums and being a rock and roll drummer.
No not at all! Absolutely
This might be an odd comparison but I hear a lot of Stewart Copeland in his style. I think it’s the way he stays on top the beat always and full of energy. The changes in tempo in this sounds like the “So Lonely” isolated drum track. Their fills seem more like part of the beat
Really miss Moonie, one of the best one-off drummers, and is one of the reasons took up drums as a young teenager.
@MadHighway depends on which version of Who Are You you have the extended album has 2 separate versions including a lost mix which has a completely different verse. the greatest hits album has the radio friendly version which says hell instead of fuck and its about a min shorter.
that's what Keith used to say:
"I'm the best Keith Moon Type drummer in the world"
he had developed a new style of drumming combining many different influences and then melding them into his own, he could do this because he did not have a music teacher telling him he could not, that it wasn't proper, ot the right way to do it
as far as I am concerned there is no right way
learn the fundamentals and develop your style, learn as many grooves as you can, country, swing, rock, fusion
So cool to hear him wailing. Really getting into it. Moon the beast!
Only drummer in the world to make a guitar playing face while playing the DRUMS!
Kick ass drum. R.i.p Keith.
I love how the meter is all over the place. The robotic drumming of today has no emotion.
I started playing guitar at 11 years old. At that time, I was into all the guitar heroes..and their bands. Black Sabbath was my first love. But I loved The Who. “The Final 24” episode really made me respect him more. Rest In Peace Mad Cap

Or The Real Me...amazing.
one of my favorit drummers really
Ringo was the perfect Beatles drummer for sure
Just say that you are a huge fan of the Beatles so you admire every single member of the band. You said that Ringo was the best fit for the band he was in. I cannot agree more. A sloppy drummer goes well with a collectively soppy band that happened to be named the Beatles. You also said that the great drummers you mentioned wouldn’t be a good fit for the band you love. I agree. They are more suited for more sophisticated music.
sangho gee I disagree that the Beatles were sloppy, they may not have had very complicated music(which is not even true) but they did what they did very cleanly
Slammintone S neil peart is the best tho
I never met Keith but know I would like him he's so cool
