    Great video, as always! I would love to hear more about your childhood in Sisimiut. You mentioned going to high school there. I find it wild that a town of 5500 people could even have a high school! 😂How do you feel about having grown up in Greenland instead of a more major metropolitan area? Do you think it gave you some perspective as an adult you wouldn't otherwise have? Maybe an idea for another video sometime. 😉

    I really love Greenland, it's my dream! The dogs of your family are so cute and you all are very lucky to live in such beautiful environments. Also this little town looks very nice and I cannot believe that there are so many small urban centres in Greenland and moreover this town is sure in your heart as you spent a lot of time there. Thank you for sharing your adventure in Greenland.

      What? Your only comment about the Sled Dogs, is that, they are so cute!??? Are you insane? THE DOGS ARE CHAINED UP, LIVING OUTSIDE, WITHOUT SHELTER, CONFINED, ON A SMALL FROZEN CIRCLE!!??????!!!!!!! What's the cutest part about the dogs? The cute heavy chains, that yank them back by their throats, as they jump, & lunge & beg for love & attention? Or the cute way that their food is thrown on the frozen circle of ground, where they pee, poop, sleep & live. Or the cute way that they are used & abused & then put back on chains. Or the maddening behaviors they've developed, from being neglected & denied proper & nurturing & socialization. Or the cute warnings against getting too close to the dogs, because they'll likely attack you, & bite & maul you to ribbons. Nothing about this abuse is cute. Do you realize these dogs are barely socialized, therefore cannot be trusted around people. They are begging for love & attention. Denied socialization and companionship. They are driven mad, living outside, chained to a small circle. ABUSED, NEGLECTED, DISMISSED, DETACHED DISPOSABLE EXPENDABLE DOGS. These dogs run themselves to death, on demand. Then, for the loyalty & hard work, hundreds of miles later, they are chained back up. Sorry, nothing cute about dismissing the dogs internal needs & welfare. They are carelessly mistreated.

    Sissimiut is larger than I'd have thought. Bigger than Kulusuk by a long shot! While there though, we saw the sled-dogs, and we received the same instructions to not approach adult dogs by our Icelandic guide. The puppies were wonderful. One male puppy really attached himself to me. I really seemed to have a way with him! Wish I could have stayed to see him as an adult and he'd have been loyal to me, as I'd have treated him well. I know they're working dogs, though.
    Incidentally, are there any female sled-dogs among your family's pack?

      The dogs get dry dogfood (a mixture of chicken and basically regular dogfood with more calories), then dry fish (ammassaat) like the food eaten by the dog in the video, sometimes fresh fish, seal, whale meat and so on. Lots of different food.
      Hope you meant food for the dogs and not for the humans in Sisimiut...😅

    5000 inhabitants is not super small. I bet you have all the necessary services for a place of this size. Schools, grocery stores, cafeterias, restaurants, hostel(?). And of course nowadays you can have a craft brewery everywhere because you can always export the excess beer.
    Towns of those sizes have potential, because it is not super small (you can get labor), and it is not big either (probably less competition).
    It would be interesting to hear videos on the local economies of those places in Greenland.
    In Finland, I am living right on the arctic circle - and we have agriculture here. But judging from this video, the Greenlandic terrain is pretty rocky with very little soil so it might be a challenge to grow wheat and raise cows.

    • @AlexAmasaOlsen
      @AlexAmasaOlsen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All neccesseties are met here, but from what i know, not a brewery here. In my opinion being in Sisimiut during march and april to snowmobile, cabin trips and dogsledding would be soo awesome!
      The economy in Sisimiut is primarily from the fishing factory and lots of trawlers dock here to land their catch, as its the northernmost "icefree" harbor

      True, i guess it would be possible to make one big fenced yard for them to run more freely. But if all werr together freely, then there would be high chance, some of the dogs would be eaten by the other ones.
      But having them without a chain would be best, just some other problems arising with that solution.
      Some people during summer also out their dogs on an island ro run freely. Others take them for walks

    I'm sorry. I had to stop watching the video when I saw all your family's dogs tied up on those short chains, their whole world being that little circle they've worn into the snow, other than when they are taken out. Feeding an animal is not enough, it is not okay that they look well taken care of and get excited to see you. They are probably so excited to see you because being chained to a six foot chain is boring and offers no stimulation. Animals in zoos get more space and more regular interaction. I've seen similar treatment with other 'working' dogs, but just because you don't view them as pets does not mean they deserve being treated as less than a family dog. Sorry, just because that's how traditionally sled dogs are kept does not make it okay.

    • @AlexAmasaOlsen
      @AlexAmasaOlsen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sad that you feel that way, as the shown dogs are taken very well cared for and goes for dogsled rides a couple times a week. But I do get your points, just not sure you can compare the lives of a greenlandic sleddog to an animal kept in a zoo, atleast these dogs sees other surroundings and goes on trips/excursions around the nature.
      Reason they are chained is also, that they would go to other dogsled teams dogs and go fighting, sometimes with catastrophic outcomes.
      Currently having them chained is a law and they would otherwise be killed, as they can be dangerous.
      Not that its good to chain them, of course not, just the only option at the moment

    • @rule_brittania2142
      @rule_brittania2142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexAmasaOlsen Yes, I know from looking at sled dogs in Alaska, that they are not as domesticated as pet dogs, that they can get into deadly fights with other dogs, but there are other ways, like keeping them fenced in, in a space where they can roam, and have freedom to socialise, perhaps sled dogs would be better behaved if treated better and allowed to socialise with other dogs and humans? It is humans that domesticated wild dogs, you can domesticate sled dogs with the right treatment. And animal at a decent zoo has territory to explore and interaction with keepers every day, can you say that about these dogs? If a child is kept locked in a cupboard, but is allowed out for occasional trips, does the trip out negate the negative effect being kept in a cupboard has? I know it is not just your family, and it is not just in Greenland, and don't worry, I'm not trying to cancel you or will stop following you. Just wanted to have my say and hear your response. :)

  • @privatemailcall6011
    @privatemailcall6011 ปีที่แล้ว

    So... Wow. These dogs are definitely not Pets, as the average animal lover can relate to. I see a definite working dog, who seems to have just enough human socialization, to allow working with. I see pent up energy & frustration. I'm left to interpret this as the traditional handling of these dogs, not as companion animals, but as disposable working dogs. I assume the pent up energy is stored purposely, by owners, to be later expended as fuel & power, to pull sleds. I assume the seemingly distant and tough attitudes of general indifference, towards the dogs, has been practiced for untold decades, without questioning the madness of such methods. Its a classic case of archaic nonsensical practices, not evolving. Its following horrible patterns, that dismiss the dogs worth as a living creature, capable of giving & receiving love. A dog feels pain. Dogs feel suffering. Dogs form bonds and are dedicated. Dogs should not be disposable assets, according to the whim of abusive owners. Mistreatment of these dogs is excused as an assumed necessity, to get the most work from the dogs. They seem to be expendable, as far as if they are no longer useful enough. The owners must be detached from the reality that dogs are living creatures. These dogs are Used, abused & discarded by humans. There are exceptions. But not enough. Higher expectations for proper care, must be implemented. Abuse punishable by law. This is disturbing to watch. Disturbing to see the acceptance of rampant abuse. Does anyone notice anymore, that, THE DOGS ARE CHAINED UP!!??? Its insane! I wouldn't choose or dare to treat these dogs as they are traditionally treated. So, my dogs would probably be sleeping in front of a cozy fire, with food & water in bowls inside. They'd surely opt for the cozy cabin. Hence, my dogs wouldn't suffer abuse nor the indifference to their worth. Yes, I get you. But you get me too. I know you do. You're irresponsibly raised, to distance your love & caring companionship from these dogs, in order to get a hard working dog who isn't spoiled to kindness & affection. Nor are the dogs acclimated completely, as a social dog. I mean, you just toss their food on the ground. Like wild dogs. Which, they almost are. Their breeding & temperament lends ability to this work & lifestyle. It does NOT lend tolerance or acceptance to abuse. These dogs are not indifferent to pain & suffering. They become aggressive & untrustworthy because they are abused. Abuse is unnatural confinement by painful force. Abuse is not providing adequate shelter. Abuse is the purposeful neglect of mental & physical needs. Abuse is careless inadequate treatment. Demands are made of these dogs to perform tirelessly & endlessly, under a most extremely physical & mentally demanding sport, demanding exhaustive exertion consistently & persistently. Demands & the overuse of a living, breathing, feeling animal, without the person's conscience bothering them. Inexcusable. People who can and do, detach from love and feelings, while purposely abusing a dog, have no problem mistreating another human being. If you have no empathy, sympathy or guilt, about chaining up and neglecting your dogs primal needs & wants, and no guilt about causing these dogs pain & suffering, then you're a hopeless hateful abusive person. You're a hater. Or a control freak. You need to feel power over another life. Your abuse is a sickness. Sorry guys. Get a grip and help these dogs. There's a way to restructure the management of Sled Dogs. With attention on the mental health of the dog. A new facility you build & provide, to humanely house these dogs. Comfort and shelter. Love and attention. Socializing these dogs, safely. Get professional training help from an experienced natural trainer, who doesn't use pain inflicting collars. But who know the mind of dogs. And somebody please take care of that female with puppies. Some asswipe owner simply discarded her. Beat his ass, & please take care of this mama dog and puppies. Do not kill her puppies, or whatever mean people do with stray puppies. I know you guys have hard hearts about working dogs, but c'mon. Have a heart. And stop shaking your head. I understand. I just don't like it, or accept ignorance in animal ownership. And no, these dogs aren't trusting pets right now, but they all can be, shortly. It's because humans haven't made them loving, well behaved, socialized dogs. They are treated as machines. Until they outlive their usefulness. These dogs want more love & companionship, than they have ever gotten. The rewards will be immensely felt & worth it. Feel hate for the way they are chained up. Change this practice. Build. But, like I said. I get it. But I don't accept it. You shouldn't either. Otherwise, I love your little country. Picturesque and beautiful. I could live there one month every year! I'm too cold natured for longer. But I love your beautiful world! Now make the world love you, for changing the way these dogs live. Make people respect you and Greenland. Stop being known as abusive dog owners. Change the perception to: Greenland Cares. Greenland loves & cherishes their dogs. Greenland advocates for dogs. Greenland has implemented a brand new, Honor the Sled Dog Program. Greenland is the place to visit, where you won't see dogs chained up. Cmon Greenland! You can change the world of Sled Dogs!
