Racing hull design has come a long way since my days of ocean sailing...24+ knot boat speeds just blows my mind. The helm looks twitchy as hell keeping the boat balanced between flat-out speed and a broach. WOW!
Yep I use to sail on a Ross 840 and this boat could sit on 18knots for a long time. Hit 15knots just with number three on in 45-50knts of breeze in middle of the night on a delivery . Strated with masthead spinnaker and end up with three on. It was one to remember.
Totally. We have a 25' 3000lb Farr770 that we have had going 20kts on the chesepeake with a 15' plume of spray coming off where the tiller-rudder meet the waterline. More flying than planing or sailing really... Super scary on edge in that tiny thing
its a lutra 56.. i sailed on it down to cork.. its a very heavy boat nearly 15 tonnes.. lifting keel with water ballast.. the boats name is formedable 3..
right, wind is a force which equals mass times acceleration, if you keep accelerating you keep picking up speed, it's only the drag of the water that keeps you from going faster. With ice boats... much less drag and with a 10 knot wind, you can easily go 40-60 knots depending on how smooth the ice is. The funny thing is, the wind always appears to be coming from ahead (even if it's dead behind you).
Formidable 3 is a very powerful boat, the Lutra 56ft, owned by, Dutch shipping magnet, Pieter Vroon. Formidable 3 is a one off, designed by Gerard Dijkstra who has developed a worldwide reputation for his innovative yacht design. Among his best known designs is triple-masted Dynarig yacht, Maltese Falcon. Formidable 3 is a very unusual cruiser/racer; although her structure is almost entirely made of carbon fibre, she is fully fitted out below. ....
@mnacp12 Pretty sure it's the old Formidable. A 57fter I think. The owner's a hero - now got a boat called 'Tonnerre' that's been tearing up the offshore circuit in recent years.
Awesomem exciting yes , when i go on a boat with my friends. they stay in the back chilling and drinking wine, while i want to stand in the front while the boat is speeding awesome around 6-7. when the sun is going down and the sky changes to 1000 different colors so
I had no idea large monohulls were so fast these days! The crew must have cat-like reflexes to assess and make small corrections before something major goes wrong. Sailing at those speeds, I imagine that unpleasant things can happen very quickly.
I don't know how they do it but I have followed these boats in the gulf and they can go way faster the the relative wind. The boat in vid looks like it's doing at least 25-30 knots.
very nice, good control in planning conditions with what appears to be a short crew. fast kite reaching, what boat, TP? custom? Interested to know what region.
geat speed i amsailer too but i am only 16 years old :D and soon i will get B classs sailing certificate and i am saling sinc 4 years :D :D this is great :) i love this sport :)) ^^ an i cant live without it :) P.S sry for my eng mistakes
Thats because the yachts you are watching race are most-likely not going strait downwind making a different looking wake. This boat is on a run, the boat is going to be flat in the water and cause that shaped wake. Also the shape of the boat has to do with the shape of the wake, not the engine. The engine of a boat it's self doesn't make a wake, its the boat moving though the water and displacing water. So yeah.... plus...an engine couldn't move a boat that fast unless it was HUGE
Keep your mind open to new music... the mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open. Or maybe it is like a sail. :) A lot of the world loves trance music. What music would have you preferred?
Its a big boat man. The bigger they are the easier it gets . 24knots on a 40footer is different to a 60footer. But its all fun. Also easier off shore in big lazy swells.
@porpoisefathom I know man, I have a 24.6ft 1986 Rampage Express with a 400hp 383 Mercruiser Stroker, I love my motors but there is something amazing about going somewhere this fast for free!
Spinnakers are slow. A sails rock. I went off shore on a 40footer this year . We averaged 11 knots for 1300 miles Best 6hrs was average at 16nots hitting 22. What a ride pitch black doing 20 knots it was fucking awesome. Best speed 22 knots with flat fractional gennaker, Kiwi boats rock. It was a Ross 40 called Revs.
Can someone please tell me what song is played from 03:30 till about 04:20. Ich do know it, but i just can't figure out the title. By the way. This ist just insane sailing. So nice to watch.
Max Have alook on Sailing Anarchy and search for a boat Called Blue Dude. You will see some pictures of the boat. And this Yacht went single handed from New Zealand to Noumea . Mad Frenchman!
ID Neon and others are thinking of Froudes Law which states that a boat ,power or sail ,cannot exceed 1.4 x the square root of its waterline length so as he says a 50ft boat cannot exceed about 9 or 10 knots. Absolutely true - for displacement hulls. No such limit exists for non displacement or planing hulls. . Also he says that a boat cannot exceed the speed of the apparent wind. On a dead run a boat can equal the speed of the apparent wind and on a reach go faster . Dont ask me how !
yes it's true, some boats can but not this one, anyway it's fast. some years ago a man, Bruno Peyron had organised a race around the world with the most fastest sailing multi hull in the world and it was that, sailing faster than wind
doing a pretty good job at holding as straight a course as possible in those conditions according to your wake. well done
Racing hull design has come a long way since my days of ocean sailing...24+ knot boat speeds just blows my mind. The helm looks twitchy as hell keeping the boat balanced between flat-out speed and a broach. WOW!
This is the most awesome sailing video on the TUBE. Even like the music,
I could watch this all day. FANTASTIC job
Near by 20 kts. oficial confirmend. Congratulation for the crew. Beautiful ship. Aye!
Only sailors understand how close to the edge this is and the cosequences of one slip!
Great clip. I am in envy.

sweet, my baby loves to watch sailing videos.... loves this one.. and i love the dance music =-]
Great vid, brings back memories,i was a main sail trimmer....and i hated the spinnaker...in the wrong hands.
OMG that looks like so much fun! I just want to hop on the boat and sail in that weather :D
Totally. We have a 25' 3000lb Farr770 that we have had going 20kts on the chesepeake with a 15' plume of spray coming off where the tiller-rudder meet the waterline.
More flying than planing or sailing really... Super scary on edge in that tiny thing
awesome!Thank you this vid keeps my spirits up during the off seson
Amazing feeling to ride the surf... Beautiful boat
What is this music?

very good music, very nice video
amazing video, who needs an engine when u can hit 24 kts in a sailboat, wow!
u wont get sick because of the kick of sailing in this weather! :D
Would love to get out and race on the sea one day, can't say I'm impressed with the colour of the jackets tho.
Great footage.........the way sailing is meant to be!
amazing!!!!! they guy even toook jacket offf lol. im new to sailing so for me what you guys are doing is extreme! 5+
dual helms so the helmsman can always be in the windward side for better visibility. The guy in the middle is trimming the main sheet.
I cant see any other yachts about on the horizon... pretty good video :)
Awesome footage, looks like a very well balanced boat to sail. Bugger being the guy grind though.
Busted the 18 knot range twice last year...and it felt good...
Awesomem exciting
yes , when i go on a boat with my friends.
they stay in the back chilling and drinking wine,
while i want to stand in the front while the boat is speeding
awesome around 6-7. when the sun is going down

so
Great sailing, great video !
Sailing, especially on the plane is the most exhilarating experience ever!
I had no idea large monohulls were so fast these days!
The crew must have cat-like reflexes to assess and make small corrections before something major goes wrong. Sailing at those speeds, I imagine that unpleasant things can happen very quickly.
love it!!! could this kind of speed be generated solo???
Yeah, but everyone seems nice and relaxed... GREAT STUFF!
I don't know how they do it but I have followed these boats in the gulf and they can go way faster the the relative wind. The boat in vid looks like it's doing at least 25-30 knots.
Yes I think at 2.44 you can see the stern wave which is way behind the boat so it is exceeding displacement speed easily
very nice, good control in planning conditions with what appears to be a short crew. fast kite reaching, what boat, TP? custom? Interested to know what region.

this is great :) i love this sport :)) ^^ an i cant live without it :)
P.S sry for my eng mistakes
looks for me more like the main sheet...
is a pretty common system for big yachts like that...
Thats because the yachts you are watching race are most-likely not going strait downwind making a different looking wake. awesome, love that first song, what is it XP
i don't see how people would dislike this , like come on who doesn't want to do this
Surfing some of those waves on a run takes balls...
Yes this is beautiful,
whats the name of the song??
Its a big boat man. The bigger they are the easier it gets . 24knots on a 40footer is different to a 60footer. But its all fun. Also easier off shore in big lazy swells.
Almost looks like an Asymmetric 1.5 oz. chute for a smaller boat held out with a spinnaker pole.
GREAT BOAT!!!!!!!!!! dam i would like to race with one like that!!
"tamarra" is international...ahahahahah
Ciao Fra8899 :)
nice video, sweet boat
you are not sailing guys ...u are the own wind...amazing and regards
awesom video! I want to be there too.
North sea Sailors rule.
this is defenetly close to the edge. Close to the edge o freak out.
by
ive sailed in roughly 37 knot wind but i was in a sunfish, not a keel boat.
im just an amazing sailor like that :D
I'd love to have a go at that
very good sailing moment! what boat is it?
sweeet! nice vid dude! makes me happy!
Its called 'A Time for Eels' and it is by Petra Muller
I dont know to much about the yachts, but what is the crank for? main sheet? also nice boat and sailing!
Nothing quite like being carried that fast by the wind.
@porpoisefathom I know man, I have a 24.6ft 1986 Rampage Express with a 400hp 383 Mercruiser Stroker, I love my motors but there is something amazing about going somewhere this fast for free!
First song?? awesome video!!! 5 stars
Why fight the wind with an engine when you can use it to go like that! Totally awesome!
at least you got a nice day for it, shame about lack of sun.
@roepieislief So, would one of the other crew members be telling him what to do? He isn't looking at the jib...

I'd definitely use my lifebelt when pissing off the boat :D
I like the music. does anybdy know what it is?

Nice
amazing..want to ride around the world

Max Have alook on Sailing Anarchy and search for a boat Called Blue Dude. You will see some pictures of the boat. And this Yacht went single handed from New Zealand to Noumea . Mad Frenchman!
they are doing 24 kn at the beginning on speedo. I think it is a cookson 50 -v fast.
chemical brothers - hey girl hey boy
Just a thought, but shouldn't the sail trimmer watch the sail, unless those grinds were just hoists?
molto meglio il rumore del vento e della barca di questa musica tamarra...
very better the noise of the wind and the boat of this music tamarra
Yes Ive heard explanations which involve vacuums low pressure areas and such like anyone else know ?
ID Neon and others are thinking of Froudes Law which states that a boat ,power or sail ,cannot exceed 1.4 x the square root of its waterline length so as he says a 50ft boat cannot exceed about 9 or 10 knots. awesome
think is really an awesome experience to make!
Not anymore, Ericsson 4 just hit 602 nm in 24 hrs during first leg in VOR 2008.
u guys r pros!!!!!!!!!
Awesome vid
They are surfing, had it many times overriding the wind to the point where the spinnaker was all back into the forestay
Super!!!
haha a zi "tamarra nn me lo hai tradotto però"
grat video by the way !!!
Whats the guy in the middle cranking that thing doing
I would love to know about the music also.
Max hit thumbs down by mistake . 20 knots on a 770 is rocking .
yes it's true, some boats can but not this one, anyway it's fast.
some years ago a man, Bruno Peyron had organised a race around the world with the most fastest sailing multi hull in the world and it was that, sailing faster than wind
This yacht is currently for sale look up Lutra 56 on Yachtworld.
Great ! only remark: no life vests / life lines ??
It is Superstar DJs - Here We Go!:
The colour of the rain jackets is the same of te sea; i should change that. If you want to be more visible in case of needed
Is this vessel an Open 60? If not ,what style of transom is on this boat?
now this looks fun!
