  • Do you struggle to make walk cycle animations for your games? In this video, I’ll break it down and explain how I make pixel art walk cycles with the help of diagram reference from a professional animator.

    That is incredibly useful! I personally prefer the animation without the nose bounce. I really like the way you explained what happens in each frame so I can apply it to my art. Thanks :D

    Just getting into a personal hobby with Coding a relatively simple side scroller using the Python and Pygame code/library and I must say, You and Pixel Overload have some EXTREMELY beginner friendly pointers and I like how in-depth you go as well as breaking up the different parts of the body and I like seeing the 12 frames of animation concept. Anyways if I don't stop myself I'll type forever, Thank you Kiwi.

    thanks for the animation tutorial. I love animation and would love to see a few more pixel-art animation tutorials. The two things I've never known is the ear flap and drawing the upper body first. I've always felt like the lower body is way trickier, but thanks for the info.
    Also, the nose is better. It adds a lot of character

    This tutorial is very easy to digest, it's so helpful! Looking forward for more pixel animation tutorials!
    Quick question though, what factors do you consider in choosing the number of frames for your animations?

    • @KiwiBee
      @KiwiBee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! I'm glad I could help! The number of frames depends on how smooth you want your animation to be, but they should always be divisible by 4. I animate using 8 frames because it is the simplest way to animate while still making it look good, IMO. Hope that answers your question. :)

  • @noctisocculta4820
    @noctisocculta4820 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome tutorial, thanks! I'll definitely remember the follow the body rule.
    I prefer the nose bounce one. The animation feels more fluid. It looks like the head is bobbing slightly, or possibly breathing. It's like the Mario mustache- it doesn't make sense that the mustache animates, but it sure sells the illusion of the character coming to life.

    • @KiwiBee

    Thanks for this quick, yet high-quality tutorial, Kiwii!
    I, too, learned to animate from Richard Williams' "Animator's Survival Kit".
    This is a great little low-pixel count walk cycle! Personally, I feel that the version WITHOUT the nose bounce is best. I feel that short-snouted and stiff-muzzled animals like cats, bears, dogs, foxes, and--yes--pandas carry their nose along with their head (thus, in this case, body) movement. There's not enough cartilage to give it sway.
    By contrast, long-snouted animals like elephants and aardvarks, and soft-muzzled characters, like anything with a cartoonishly large or bulbous nose are subject to a delayed nose bounce.

      Thanks! That's such a great explanation, and I would have to agree with you. Goodgis and I were going back and forth about it. I don't think the nose bounce makes sense because the snout is so short, but I can see why he likes it. He thinks the nose bounce because it adds character and makes the animation look more fluid and complete. Plus, he argued that a bipedal panda doesn't make sense anyway.. which is a good point lol.

    Kiwii I need help with shading no matter how hard I try in the end my shading looks really bad so could you make a video on that please??

    • @KiwiBee
      @KiwiBee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion! In the mean time, try using a style with minimal shading, such as Mother 3 on the Game Boy Advance. There's a great resource called The Spriters Resource that shows all of the sprites in detail. If you search "spriters resource mother 3" in your search engine it should be one of the first things that comes up. That game is a great example of how pixel art can look amazing with very little shading.

    What am I supposed to do for a front facing walk cycle? There are no tutorials on that

    • @KiwiBee
      @KiwiBee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan on making a front facing walk cycle video at some point, but the same steps apply from this video. Start with moving the body up and down like in this video then do the same things with the legs, except the legs won't be moving from side to side, they will just kind of get longer when fully upright and shorter when extended forward or backwards mid-step. The arms will do the same and be fully visible when extended forward with the opposite leg and will be partially hidden behind the body when the other foot comes forward. I hope that helps.
