Robert thank you for bringing Mia on. I had the opportunity to attend one if her seminars in Mexico. I share her championship videos whenever I want people to see what IGP is and should look like.
Hi Robert, Thank you for these podcasts. I was listening today on my 4 hr drive to 8 trials over 2 days. Listening to your podcasts is part of my pre trial routine now. Passionate trainers at the peak level, even if we train different disciplines, is really enlightening. It gets my mind working, and hypes me for our trials, even though I don't compete in the same sport. Would love to hear from more people at the peaks of their disciplines; scent detection, retrieving, SAR too please. The nitty gritty and secrets of the trade too please! Cheers, from Australia~
This was excellent. Love the explanations. I'm not involved in protection dogs but have so much respect for the handlers, dogs and those in the bite suits. The level of training is amazing. Thank you both for this one.
Wow..I appreciated the German Shepherd talk..I got really lucky with my breeder, I “went local” so I could meet the sire, dam, whole litter, got to play w the litter and meet mom and dad. I’ve been looking at the bloodlines, what’s incredible is how you can read the breed reports to see an “inertia” of behavioral characteristics and trace your pup’s lineage all the way back to the very first dogs Stephanitz bred to create the breed..my boy seems not super affectionate l but runs up to others, loves greeting other ppl and dogs, seems calm, measured, intelligent, receptive to training. There are national champions on both sides of his heritage, I found a video of his grandad competing online. I feel humbled to be a part of this noble history, and pray I don’t screw him up..lol..!
Great conversation! How great it would be having Mia with Susan Garrett in a podcast who encouraged Ivan Balabanov to start training for IGP purely positive way. Mia has actual experience trying to do it so she could tell us about it.
It’s a nice dream to think, but you will never take a dog to a top level in a sport like IGP or ringsport doing it purely positive. I believe Mia mentioned that in this podcast…. A couple of times. I applaud her for her honesty.
You didn't listen correctly. They couldn't actually tell how to train a dog to become a top class IGP dog by training fully positive. Mia doesn't train fully positive....and Susan Garett doesn't train for sports like IGP, she does agility.
I know trainers who do genuinely train PP in IGP, including being on national teams. Can you get to IGP3 with a PP trained dog? Yes, particularly at national level. BUT ONLY with the right dog, who tends to be a much softer dog who can't take pressure from a decoy - and this is where it falls down internationally. A national level decoy will be kind and encouraging to the dog - at club trial we all want to see dogs and handlers succeed. At international level decoys will genuinely challenge the dog, especially the short attack decoy to make the dog doubt himself and lose confidence before he goes to the long attack decoy - and this is where the weaker dogs fall apart. As we make IGP easier, with less emphasis on a strong, confident dog - such as removing stick strikes this year - we change the sport and open it up to PP trained dogs, as you no longer need a confident dog.
I should also say the training takes MUCH longer with a PP dog, and is totally impossible with many. I think people forget most training in IGP is primarily positive. Corrections are providing information, and are helping the dog, including emotionally. The dog achieves. This was well covered in the video.
Honorable human being … kept a lazy dog :) I am 100% he will do his best giving his best to someone loving, caring and ethical like her… She has already won keeping the little guy and keeping her world to give away the one she liked …. What you kept is a champion to me he has you ❤ :)
There’s a “Malinois” in my puppy class, I have a 17 wk GS, and a little black….. .. dog..lol. The little black dog and my Shepherd play like little Tasmanian Devils, or weasels rolling bitingrollingbiting and in good fun, the “malinois” opportunistically bites the smaller black dog, and occasionally growls and snaps at it. It shows virtually no interest in real play with the other two. I think it’s going to be a problem for its owner, but, could be wrong, it does seem well behaved w the owner. It’s really pretty, but..hmm..I’m very happy w my boy watching its behavior..
Sadly, culling is a thing and Europeans are well aware and apart of the process. Americans can't handle the hard truths. Now softening up working dogs has been more prelevant in the last decade do to people wanting to have them as pets or departments not being able to handle a strong social confident dog.
Agree. Same thing with American society- everything softening up- can’t handle the hard truths. Everybody wants a pill; an easy fix. Just look at rates of obesity in this country. Disgraceful. God help us if we go to war with the generation we have now
Mia spoke my language, I got a neck cramp from nodding so much. Love, love, love her approach to dogs!
I found a vid of her competing and the dog was literally flying over the jumps..it brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful!
Love Mia! She is a great ambassador for IGP. Can't wait to listen! ❤

@@rottsandspots list me one PP igp trainer that has gone to nationals.

Amazing! Where in U.k are you situated? Where is IGP or obedience etc?
