Thank you for the Euro Nymphing and fly tying videos. I am a bit of a fan. A little anecdote that might make you laugh. I have tied several of your Olive Flash Perdigons and they catch fish. Because I am a bit color blind, I need my wife to identify if I have the green side facing out. She's a great sport about helping out, but she gets more satisfaction helping me with my wardrobe. Yes, she still picks out my ties, shirts and pants. Talking through your approach and strategy as you fish is thoroughly helpful. The tuck cast and line management with your left hand is a game changer and such a logical method of getting the flies to depth quickly. I started Euro Nymphing a few months ago after purchasing a package deal Euro Nymphing set up. I have been watching your Euro Nymphing videos for a few months,and I am starting to get it, putting a lot of your instruction into practice. It appears that most of your casts are no more than 20 feet upstream or across the the river, and you move to access desired pockets of water. Is that accurate? My most common mistakes are trying to cast too far and not moving toward desirable pockets of water. Thanks again for all that you do to further the art and sport of Euro Nymphing.
Michael, it’s good to having a supportive wife! Glad all the videos have been helpful. My casting distances are the opposite of what you think. They are a 20-35ft all the time. Get out of the habit of only fishing across from you and learn to fish more upstream and back. You can increase your distances and always stay below the fish. It will put more in the net for you. That being said, the closer you are, the easier and more accurate you can be. But you can’t be on top of the fish. Just think your way around the stream and put yourself in the best position without spooking the fish.
Another gem, Cory!! I loved how you replayed what you did with your rod for a particular cast by securing your flies and going through the fundamentals slowly showing rod angles and with precise commentary. Can't wait for the next one! Cheers!

Cory, I wanted to give you a little update that I finally got the Danville’s 6/0 beige from Kelly Galloups website, and had the chance to tie up some Jack Daniels flies. They are fish catching machines! I pulled 6 browns out of a run that I can usually only get 2-3 max out of before they get wise to my fly. Thanks again, keep up the great content.

Lot'sa good stuff here! I especially liked the discussion at the 30:30 mark, explains a lot in 2-3 sentences I'm sorry to say. Between you and D.O. I pretty much got most of the how-to. Would like to see a touch more on why you select a particular fly or pair on a river, especially a river you don't know. I get the weight but not necessarily the fly choice itself. Also, something I don't see talked about much if at all in comments: A high-5 on fish handling time and glove off. In the net's a good place for it.

Hello. I like your videos, they are very educational. I am passionate about nymph fishing. And I have a question that I would like you to clarify for me. In one of your latest videos you have used Airflo line in your equipment. And in others you only use Michel Pezon
Hey Javier. Thanks for watching. I use Airflo for my fly line and Pezon for my leader all of the time. In this video my leader was almost 30ft long, plus my tippet. That’s why you didn’t see it much. I like a long leader this time of year, especially if I think I’ll be casting farther. I can always cut it shorter if I want to. When it is colder, I’ll have the leader shorter so I can always have the fly line in my hand because you don’t have the dexterity in the cold like you do when it is warm. Hope this helps.

So I recently decided to (finally) take on euro nymphing so I am just digging into your euro nymphing videos and learning from them. Being a big nympher, so much of what you say and describe makes sense to me, I just hope I can put it all into practice. Sorry in advance for the questions I'm going ask on your videos and appreciate the time you taken in the past to answer questions. I noticed a couple videos so far you have relatively short drifts given the amount of open water. Is that because you've already fished the water perpendicular to you? If you haven't already, a video on how you work and carve up a section, drifts, staying in the lane etc. would be awesome! [edited to say I just watched your video on perfecting your drift 😀]

Cory (great name!) have you done any videos on how to select rivers or parts of a river to fish? I'm in western Vermont near Burlington and often use Google maps to look for what I think would be good locations but I rarely catch or even see fish. Occasionally I catch one or two but I feel like maybe I'm not going to the right places. I'm sure there are multiple factors (last years snow pack, time of day, water temp, etc.) that impact what makes a good fishing stream but it's really frustrating to get repeatedly skunked and then watch you catch 20 fish in a day! hahah thanks for the great channel and fishing tips!
Hey CORY! I haven't done a video on that, but you can research the area using online info or books about your region. The first step is to make sure you are fishing streams that hold trout. There is a great book: "Fly Fishers Guide to New England". Lots of great information in there. After you have the area, it's all about searching and finding the right water for the trout based on water temps, time of year, flows, bug activity, etc...Once again, there is so much info about this in books and online. Hi Corey, after watching a couple of your videos I realized that I have been lobbing and not casting my micro leader. I was having a heck of a time until I followed your suggestion and went back and studied your casting video and it has really helped. One question I have is that I have always gripped the rod with all of my fingers around the cork and I've notice that you and George Daniel cast with your index finger down the shaft, what is the reason for that style grip ? Thanks much
RJF-the finger will help with accuracy. Point your finger where you want your bugs to go. It also keeps your rod from drifting to the inside like at can with your thumb on top. Lastly, It prevents your rod from going way too far back past the 2 o’clock position on your backcast. With your thumb on top you can easily bring at back behind parallel to the water. With your thumb on top it is impossible.
Great vid Cory----you have greatly influenced how I now fly fish. I noticed that, over time, you 16mm leaders have gotten longer--is there a reason they are now 29ft?
Appreciate it and glad I have been helpful to you! I like to start out with a little longer leader that will make casting farther easier. I like that option this time of year, especially if I think I’ll be casting farther distances. You can always cut it back, if you need to. In the winter, I may go shorter so I can handle more fly line because you don’t have the “feeling” or dexterity you have when it’s warm out. Hope this makes sense. Tight lines to you.
I noticed in this video you mostly, but not always, manage slack without pinching the line with the rod hand. What's your reasoning whether you do or not? Excellent content btw.
You will see me do it both ways, Lyman. I usually do it like a pulley in faster water where even a split second delay (when moving it to your finger on the handle) can cause you to lose connection. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and tight lines!
Thank you for the lesson on a smorgasbord of fly casts and how and where to apply them. On the subject of losing fish... as of late in the past month my % of lost fish to caught fish has been 3-1.. Normally I feel I land 4 fish to 1 lost and maybe even better than that. . Is it because during the summer months I'm using 18s and 20s vs spring time 12s and 14 size flys ? (Barbless) or is it the fish are more fiesty in water temps in the 60s ? OR maybe could it be as summer comes our waters produce smaller fish that wiggle like mainacs more that pull and fight ? Instead of fishing and reacting automatically I'm starting to think of what I'm doing. That's not good. Thanks
Glad it was helpful, Dave! When it comes to losing fish, it’s just part of fishing. Barbless hooks don’t cause you to lose fish-that’s a misconception. I actually think they hook fish better. It just happens. Can smaller hooks have a hard time holding them? Sure. There are days I fish and never lose a fish. There are many factors that can go into losing them. Maybe that’s a great idea for a future video. Appreciate you watching.
Hey Bubba. It all comes with practice. Not sure if you are right-handed or left-handed. But, you need to be able to cast from your off-hand side or make that adjustment while it is still in the air, so it is a nice transition. Hard to help when I'm not exactly sure what is going on.
Devin Olsen from Tactical Fly fisher did a video on casting from your off hand shoulder. He's not as personable as Cory, but has a ton of good information.
Thank you, Alan. I am almost certain that you are extending your arm straight out or high sticking. It isn’t necessary to do that. It is a common mistake. Make sure your arm is in a comfortable position just like any other way you would fish. Arm bent and reel in front of your chest. Hope this helps.
Whoa, was that a CCW loop at 13:37. You pulled out at the end of first drift then loop-turned it into tuck cast more overhand. So the nymphs didn’t touch the water from pull out to final plunge?

I think my cheapy 10’ 3wt “Euro” rod is too fast and/or my nymphs are too light to cast on those vectors. Gotta dial in that balance still, bc I think my line setup is right. Still catching more fish than when suspending nymphs beneath bobber or dry, so I think I’m on the right track.

@OldDominionTroutBum well it seems a lot of cast start with the leader on the water. If u r on shore how do u cast? I'm just asking cause when I tried casting I felt like I had no control of where my nymphs went. Greta video btw.
Mike, you can do water load casts or cast traditionally. I do both. When you have obstructions behind you, you have to do the best you can. Bow and arrow casts, pendulum casts or a quick single haul. It all takes practice…but learn how your rod works. If you focus on the fundamental cast, all the other stuff becomes easier.
I don't know anything about fishing in Ireland, but I do here in the US. This creek is no pushover and it doesn't allow for sub-par drifts. Put me in one of your streams in Ireland and I like my chances. Slainte.

Aye Cory I fish alot with the water right to left ... but struggle casting with water moving left to right ..any good advice ...thanks.

Cory, great video. I did some euro nymphing on Saturday. I found that my arm got tired. Is that normal?
Thank you, Alan. I am almost certain that you are extending your arm straight out or high sticking. It isn’t necessary to do that. It is a common mistake. Make sure your arm is in a comfortable position just like any other way you would fish. Arm bent and reel in front of your chest. Hope this helps.

Whoa, was that a CCW loop at 13:37. You pulled out at the end of first drift then loop-turned it into tuck cast more overhand. So the nymphs didn’t touch the water from pull out to final plunge?

I think my cheapy 10’ 3wt “Euro” rod is too fast and/or my nymphs are too light to cast on those vectors. Gotta dial in that balance still, bc I think my line setup is right. Still catching more fish than when suspending nymphs beneath bobber or dry, so I think I’m on the right track.
Could you please tell me how much line is hanging from your rod tip when you are making your cast
Martin, It is no different than a traditional fly cast. If I am casting 30ft, I could have 20ft out and shoot the rest. Once the cast is out, I can false cast 30ft of line. Check out this video here. It may help:

Hey Rick, it is 29-30 ft of .18mm pink/white Pezon & Michel Color Line to my tippet ring. I was using 6x for the whole time.

@@rickconyers5873 Rick, I'm not a fan of Euro Rod 4wts-they are way too heavy and overkill. There isn't a trout in the US, you can't get in with a 3wt.

What is your average casting length? It looks longer on TH-cam.
Mark-I would say the average is 20ft. But there are shorter casts at 15 and some out to 30plus ft. Appreciate you watching. Tight lines.

@OldDominionTroutBum well it seems a lot of cast start with the leader on the water. If u r on shore how do u cast? I'm just asking cause when I tried casting I felt like I had no control of where my nymphs went. Greta video btw.
Mike, you can do water load casts or cast traditionally. I do both. When you have obstructions behind you, you have to do the best you can. Bow and arrow casts, pendulum casts or a quick single haul. It all takes practice…but learn how your rod works. If you focus on the fundamental cast, all the other stuff becomes easier.
I would imagine, rivers like that are stuffed with fish, try the local wild small streams in Ireland, no room for error.
I don't know anything about fishing in Ireland, but I do here in the US. This creek is no pushover and it doesn't allow for sub-par drifts. Put me in one of your streams in Ireland and I like my chances. Slainte.
You say 20-30’ cast does that include the length of the rod
