Sarah Michelle Gellar was not interested in returning to the role, since she was busy, she had not seen a script, and she was afraid of jumping the shark.
Giselle Loren had already voiced 'Buffy Summers' for the Buffy video games, Buffy (Xbox) and Chaos Bleeds.

Willow is weirdly fazed when Buffy mentions fighting a regular vampire, and Xander is weirdly unfazed when Buffy is grabbed by a dragon.

+Timetraveling360 Think what Kim Possible did to the Bond films and spy genre. Okay, good, Buffy does much the same to the likes of Dracula and horror, the most solid difference being it's not restricted by Disney's family friendly approach and can have real teeth, scares and emotion (as good as So the Drama to use an example was, it does not cover the idea of Kim setting out to murder Shego in cold blood like Buffy does) in their storytelling.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Buffy and know how large an impact it has. And I love Kim Possible in it's own ways too. I appriaciate both shows for completely diferent reasons. Was just trying to make a light hearted joke. :P
I think Kim Possible was based off Buffy. She even says "What's the sitch" which is from Buffy.
TV Tropes began as a Buffy supersite and has this to say about it.
Spiritual Successor: To what else, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You have the Action Girl hero in Kim, The Lancer and best friend in Ron, Alpha Bitch cheerleader in Bonnie, evil The Only One Allowed to Defeat You Dark Action Girl in Shego, and instead of poking fun at the likes of Nosferatu the series has James Bond square in it's sights.
Kim Possible, to a certain degree, is one to Darkwing Duck. Kim Possible is also seen as Disney's take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
swap Buffy for Kim, Xander for Ron, Cordelia for Bonnie, Faith for
Shego, vampires for spies and you have the basic skeleton. Throw in the meta humor and genre savvy of both series it's clearly a huge influence.
And there's more than a little cribbed from the show, from referencing The Witch to Kim wearing Buffy's gym clothes...look at The Dark Age, carbon copy.

Such a crime that this show was never produced to become a real show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer should return.
Giselle Loren is great here in the animated show and also in the two games, but Sarah Michelle Gellar could be ready to return since she doesn't really have a career anymore. This would certainly give her career some new push.

Of course she kind of faded away on her on decision. She got a family now so that is the priority number one.
Misbehave Well, David Boreanaz also has a family now (incl 2 kids), and yet he's starring in Bones.
He doesn't seem to be of the same opinion that having kids means you have to retire.
But then, that's just what Sarah Gellar is like - perfectionist to the point where she gets exhausted from it too quickly (that's why Buffy ended, by the way - Sarah refused to do another season), and also gets on everyone's nerves by expecting them to work that hard as well. Most people who worked with her seemed to find her bossy. That's probably another reason why she's kinda faded out.
Also, to Elizabeth: Being a fan doesn't mean that you think that they're all perfect. It simply means that you think that they're better than most.
Vousie V Sarah M. Gellar did not retire. She was in at least two TV shows recently. *Recently*.
Plus she's done several films since Buffy.
This looks like it really had potential the girl playing Buffy is a fantastic choice, you can hardly tell it's not Serah Michelle Gellar

They actually had 13 scripts ready to produce the show, but nobody wanted it.
Networks thought it was too childish for adults and too adult to show kids, so there wasn't a place for it on TV.
All the cast were the original stars, except Sarah Michelle Gellar, who didn't want anything to do with it.

I probably would've watched it, just to see what direction it went in.
I doubt the show is too adult for kids these days, so who knows, if Joss Whedon tried again, maybe some network might pick up the show, much to the delight of some fans, and to the horror of others, perhaps?
I think its stupid of them to think that it could be to adult for some or childish for some when seeing the success of the original series. I think the WB had the same worries for Angel when it started and look how it turned out. Also, they could see the success of more mature cartoons like Justice Largue Unlimited and Batman the animated series... So many cartoons that can appeal to both kids and adults... What a shame it wasent picked up for such stupid reasons. Pure insecurities.

It is a shame to not have had this, as animation does seem like a fine fit for Buffy, but maybe it's for the best given that SMG wasn't on board.

If they'd gone to MTV with this, surely that would have been wiser. Not that we know for sure that they didn't, but it's very much the kind of thing they were airing back then.
In any case, it was a cost thing as much as a network thing. Which still means no streaming.

Damn, this pilot looks really good. I like the art direction, and the animation is really smooth. Plus, having most of the actual cast for it? That's just awesome.

Uh, what programming do you think they watch on iPhones and iPads? Soap Operas? They have multiple cable networks now dedicated solely to animation. Animation is much, much bigger than it's ever been in the states. A Buffy cartoon would be a smash hit.

Too bad this did not go down it would have made great entertainment they can still make it today.

yaknow, this would be an awesome series, even if the original cast didn't play in the voices. haha it's awesome! the fight scenes are perfect, the sarcasm is even more perfect and the art style is beyond perfect!

I wish this had happened so badly. I mean, the pacing is a little rushed, but come on, it could have worked. It could have rivaled Gargoyles and Batman: The Animated Series!

It would have been cool if they had made a point of transforming all of the characters into a 2D cartoon land and then just continuing the show's run like that. Kind of like how they used puppets on Angel.

God only knows why they never went through with this, but the way that animators have way more freedom, now-a-days, with the content in their work, right now would be the perfect time to release this series. Yes, but this is Willow we're talking about. At least, early Willow. She kicks off with panic, gets calmed by Buffy and Xander, and kicks butt in her own, understated, Willow way. But the panic stuff is always funny, since she tends to overexaggerate things.
"Oh, but gosh. What'll happen if you and Cordelia are wearing the same color? It'll be you know, a thing!" Cartoon!Giles is so perfect. Wish this really existed.

I never get tired of watching this. As a Buffy follower since the movie and the beginning of the entire series and now the comic book, I really wish they had made this show. It looks great. I can't believe they couldn't get any network to bite. It is an expensive show considering the animation I'm told but Buffy fans would eat it up! Buffy was never cancelled! Sarah and Joss decided to end it. Buffy fans would want more!
I would absolutely watch this! If they picked this up from the end of the series to continue with the stoirs would be great! Fans should write in I know I will!

Honestly,I hope this show is a kid-friendly TV-Y7-FV rated show. I have never heard Of this until now. Sucks it ended up being cancelled with no episodes aired,even though though the script are completed and the animation is done.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that fire breathing terror is actually Morgana herself. Given that in Arthurian legends she was a powerful sorceress and able to change her form. Particularly a dragon.

brandon samuels This was produced during Season 5, this being an alternative at the time to switch the show to UPN. They went with the latter. The cartoon would have aired on the defunct Kids WB. Now, it's a comic book.
the visuals look ok but the sound is like something out of one of those audio books

This animation style falls right between Stripperella and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. So Nostalgic!
honestly i can see why this would not be good for early season stuff, however season 8- onwards+ angel season 6 onwards would have been great in this format
