  • The Las Torres Viewpoint is part of the W Trek in Torres Del Paine. You can do the Mirador Las Torres as a day hike and it is one of the best hikes in Patagonia.

    Hello! Thank you for sharing! My husband and I are planning on doing the hike this November (if we make it at all to Patagonia). Did that take you 7hrs just to the base or out and back? What time of the year were you hiking and how early did you start? Thank you!

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It took us 7 hours for out and back. We were there in January. I believe we started at about 10 o’clock which was later than we planned, but the drive to get to the trailhead took us longer than we anticipated so we started late

      Yes we stayed in Puerto Natales and then drove into the park and stayed at the Pampa Lodge for 3 nights, it was a great place right by the west side entrance of the park

    Thanks so much for posting these videos! Very helpful. My wife and I are headed there in a month (December) and plan to either do Base Tower or French Valley - we are on the fence on which we should do as they both look beautiful. Do you have a favorite between the two? We are planning to do a 1/2 day hike on day one, full day on day 2, and another 1/2 day on day 3. We love a challenge (multi-terrain, steep up/down, edge of the mountain, etc) I also heard base tower has much more traffic than FV - is that true? Would greatly appreciate your recommendation.

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I liked Base Tower better. Yes there are more people on the hike, but I liked the overall hike better, more variety of scenery and we didn’t have to be so rushed on time due to the catamaran. The view of the towers at the end is truly unique because you are in a natural amphitheater with the jagged towers right up close
      With French Valley, as soon as we got to the viewpoint we had to turn around and head back right away, I wish we could have pushed on to see more or spent more time enjoying the view. Also, on the French valley hike you are hiking for quite a few miles through a giant burn scar so the landscape isn’t as nice through there. If I could do it again I would stay overnight one night at the Refugio Paine Grande, that way you could take your time and go to the furthest viewpoint. If you want to have solitude, though, French Valley would be better, because you have to take the catamaran, it really cuts down on the amount of people on the trail.
      So, if views are more of a priority , do the towers, but if peace and solitude are more your priority, do the French valley

      Do you think a guide (guided tour) is needed for Base Tower? The path seems straightforward (via your video). Was signage pretty visible throughout the hike? Thanks in advance :) @@whereivebeenwandering

      @@tomdicicco no, a guide is not needed at all. It is well signposted and there is an obvious path for the start. Let me know if you have any other questions

    Thanks for this informative video! I am planing a solo hike for sunrise around late Jan, early Feb like you. I would have to start the hike around 3AM to make it to sunrise in the summer, I assume? What time was sunrise when you went?

    Thanks so much for sharing!! Really appreciate it 🙌. Helping me get ready for my October trip. Question: how hard going down the boulders/rocks area?

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! You will have a wonderful time! The Boulders aren’t too bad for scrambling on, especially if you wear a hiking shoe with good grip. We usually hike in approach shoes which are super grippy. (La Sportiva Boulder X, and Garmont Dragontails are some good brands) If you have hiking poles that helps with the knees too! The hardest part was probably being patient at the pinch points as people passed each other. Let me know if you have any other questions. Enjoy

      @@whereivebeenwandering Hi me here again. Which trekking poles are the best aluminum or carbon fiber? I’m so undecided.

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will both work just fine. It’s only a slight difference in weight usually. Go with what fits in your budget and what feels best in your hand. I would suggest cork grips for either because they prevent blisters.

      Here is the map with the cut off times in the lower right corner. torresdelpaine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Mapa2017-2018.pdf
      If you start at around 9am Or earlier you should have plenty of time to complete the hike. If I remember correctly, the latest they let you start the hike is 11 am (when we started)

    How did you get to the base?
    Bus, car, or hike from another point. We plan to do day hikes and drive and would like to start at crack of dawn to miss the heavy crowd. Is that possible?

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  ปีที่แล้ว

      We had a rental car that we used to drive to the start point. We stayed at the Pampa Lodge which was on the west side of the park, so it took about and hour to drive there on the gravel roads (all the roads in TDP are gravel so get an SUV if you rent a car) it’s definitely doable at dawn, but you will probably have to wake up very early because the days are very long in the summer. The other option would be to stay at the Hotel Las Torres (it’s very expensive but very beautiful place to stay) either way you will end up having to drive to the opposite side of the park for the other day hikes

  • @johnsaxon9912
    @johnsaxon9912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for this. Really confused about something though. I thought "Base Las Torres" is what everyone hikes to, i.e., the spot you reached at the end. But, at 4:40, the sign seems to suggest that that trail is closed. What gives? Thanks!

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are various cut off times to ascend to the viewpoint. If you don’t reach that spot by the cut off time you are blocked from going any further up the trail. I recorded the rope and sign when I was coming down from the hike, but showed it at this point so people could be aware that they have to start the hike by a certain time and/or hike at a certain pace so they don’t get disappointed that they can’t continue at this point

    • @whereivebeenwandering
      @whereivebeenwandering  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 6pm, the rangers will kick you out of the viewpoint area so you have enough time to hike back down before nightfall
