Seeing as I’ve supported Southampton my whole life, I took quite an interest in APOEL when they got the champions league last 8. I carried on keeping an eye on them until I visited the island a few years ago. I fell in love with the place. It is a wonderful country with wonderful people. And a fan culture like nothing I’ve ever seen in my life. If you take away all the problems off the pitch with the cfa etc, the Cypriot 1st division has some of the best ultras in Europe, and I’ve adopted APOEL as my second team. This season has been the first in a while where they have been seriously challenged and it’s been quite good to watch, apollon have been on quite the roll all season, I think at one stage APOEL were 6th or 7th in the league, I think the title race will go to the last day. Good to finally see a video on Cypriot after wanting one for so long! Cheers Copa 90!!
We actually do have some of the best ultras in the world, considering our population. If we had the population of Germany, UK etc we would be /the/ best. And our league would be great once CFA gets rid of corruption.
Never, *never* in my life did I think copa90 would make a video just on Cypriot football. This was such a surprise! On a different note, yes our football is shite
From Cyprus and an APOEL fan here. We live and breath football in our daily life. Indeed there is a minor issue with the amount of foreign players playing. Before the regulations on foreign players change (2 foreign and then 3 foreign players) our best club results was losing with dignity beyond the first or second qualifying round. Also back then our national team was in a far worse position than now and actually improved significantly since then because even though not many Cypriot players play, those who do play improve significantly by playing around better players. As a result our club teams regularly play in group stages of Champions or Europa league which in turn provides a significant revenue which is used mostly to improve facilities that benefits all club players immensely. Now more than ever before young Cypriot players get the chance to transfer to big European clubs playing at a much higher level than Cyprus. Examples: Kastanos (Juventus u23) Sotiriou (kopenhagen), Laifis (Standard Liege). Concluding the regulation change i would suggest would be to have a minimum of 3 instead of 2 local players in the starting lineup and a bigger fine for each player not starting (3K for one player, 8K for two players and 15K for three) and bonus fine if no local player played throughout the course of the match for a minimum of 20 minutes of 5K. For repeating offenders this would be really painful.
A fine of €1,500? Their FA need to toughen up. They should make it a minimum of 4 Cypriot players per team and a deduction of points if quota not met then they'll see real change.
Mike Too much corruption in Cyprus, they would never do that. Our FA is very close with APOEL. Just yesterday Apoel and Aek fixed a match. Apoel and Aek made an agreement to let Apoel beat AEK in the championship in an attempt to catch Apollon FC whilst Apoel let Aek go to the cup final against Apollon FC.
Quotas are not a good idea. What needs to happen is youth development gets better. And even if 80% of the league is foreign, it doesn't matter. There's only so many Cypriots that are going to represent their country anyway. What's important is that those top Cypriots have a good league in which to hone their talents.
Make a video on the progression side, Anthony Georgiou ,Jack Roles and NIck Tsaroulla of spurs. the potential of Atalanta's Pangiotis Louka and english lower league players like Harry Kyprianou and Andronicos Georgiou. This would be brilliant to spread awareness of the progressing national team
do a derby days video on the limassol derby between ael limassol and apollon limassol for the next season its going to be intense because it hadnt happened in a year(fan id for the away team) also (fans won over the law)
I am from Limassol and play for the Apollon youth side. Everyone who plays youth there immediately becomes a prospect for the national team, as so many people reject the offer.
.... i think his point is the young players get a callup so easily that they can probably improve and play for a better country they have roots in like greece or albania
It depends what you mean "foreign". In England and France a lot of footballers are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry but considered "English" and "French" respectively. Another thing about Cyprus is that, a lot of footballers are from Greece and they are considered "foreignres", even though they belong to the same Ethnicity!!! People from Cyprus and people from Greece belong to the same Ethnicity (Ethnic Group). Cyprus and Greece have the same National Anthem. But, for FIFA and UEFA It's all about the Citizenship and not the Ethnicity.
Let's be honest I'm Cypriot, we dont have the talent to make it to the champions league group stage nor do we have the talent to qualify to euro or the world cup. We have had some talented players in the past and some now
The premise of this video is kinda bogus. 1- If Cypriot players were good enough they could play in any league on the planet. 2- Cyprus is a small country, barely over a million people. What percentage of their total population do you expect to be professional footballers? Or from the international view, the odds of such a small country challenging for the World Cup are probably lower than Leicester winning the Prem again.
Mate, im from Cyprus and I support APOEL. Trust me when I say this, everybody on this island loves this sport. Every kid has played in an academy of some sort. It is actually rare to find people who just dont care about the beautiful game.
Look at Iceland. 350,000 people live there. The population is not an excuse for not winning. What Cyprus needs to do is to care about national football; again, Iceland is an excelent example of it.
Kyriacos Polydorou As you're an APOEL fan, may I ask if you know how this is, Raul Gudiño a countrymen of mine playing in your country, he hasn't had many apperances but if you've seen him play, is he any good. I can't see him play as he is on loan from Porto.
Well not many foreigners play in the Northern Irish League where I’m from. There’s a couple of players from the Republic and one from Denmark but there are loads of Northern Irish players in our league.
Isaác Veyna Flores I am also an APOEL fan and I've watched every game that Gudino has played. To be honest I think he's not good enough for a team that has won the league 5 consecutive seasons
I'm from Cyprus and it does make sense First of all, we're a small island with a population of barely a million, so players don't often come from academies Secondly, I believe this league is the most competitive league in Europe... Genuinely Every game is up in the air Especially at the start of the season, it's chaos And we're entering European football really hard now so the demand for better players keeps rising
Wow! My journo friend Andrew Vou from Cyprus was telling me the exact same information quite a while back. Even read some of his work. Amazing how you have the exact same ideas and practically the exact same wording!
They shouldnt have a 1500€payoff but the team who uses less than 2 domestic players should get automatic 0:3 loss (or -:+ loss whatever you wanna call it)

Sadly the national team is always gonna suffer in cyprus, we simply dont have the infrastructure and the resources to develop young talent here, and most times by the time a young player gets to 16 to 17 the clubs dont do enough to keep the kids interested in the game

Visited Cyprus last year when my team Cork City played AEK Larnaca in the Europa League. An amazing country!. I think AEK only started with two local players and had about five or six Spanish players, so no wonder we got eliminated lol. With the European money being as much as it is nowadays this is only going to continue.
England is pretty bad though on how damaging foreign players are for national side. England should be a dominant world force like Germany, Spain and Brazil, but the lack of English players getting chances is so limited, and the ones who do make it through have it even harder because of the media hype, which can crush a young prospect under the weight of expectation over them.

JMackin88 the problem with Cyprus' potential unity is the historical, political and religous shift between greeks and turks. I dont see a way how these two entities could live together without one side completely dominating and oppressing the other. (Which, sadly enough, is the reality in Greece and Turkey today). Furthermore I firmly believe that İceland's success in football isn't so much based on the country's player development system but rather on the incredible team spirit and Fan support, which enables their team to beat more talented squads like England, Croatia and Turkey.
