  • Watch us install a 2.5" OME suspension lift in our land cruiser 100 series rig. This episode includes installation of the rear shocks, springs, and sway bar drop links. The top nut on the rear suspension is a pain and we ran into trouble on the second drop link but the job wasn't too bad.
    This can be a dangerous job so if you don't have the tools or skill please hire a professional. This is also for entertainment and for general information but not a complete guide.
    This 22mm flex head ratcheting wrench is an absolute essential tool for removal of the rear shocks:
    amzn.to/2EYukng
    You can find the drop links here (please let them know we sent ya):
    www.trail-tailor.com/index.html
    The full old man emu kit from www.sleeoffroad.com includes the following (please let them know we sent ya):
    2.5" Medium Load Kit
    Includes Upper Control Arms
    Includes:
    2 x OME2860 Rear Coil Springs
    2 x Old Man Emu 60000 Shocks
    2 x Old Man Emu 60002 Shocks
    2 x Old Man Emu Torsion Bars
    1 x Slee Diff Drop Kit
    1 x SPC-25455 Upper Control Arms - Pair

    Great video. Just be happy you have the LC. Imagine getting the rear shocks off if you first have to remove the AHC lines on top of them. Serious yoga is required! As for the shock body, i drilled a hole in them and put a screw in to prevent them from twisting. Worked really well.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! I was close to looking up the screw method but the vice grips held up. I saw someone doing this while removing the AHC and it looked like quite the PITA and messy as hell.

    It took me 5 minutes per side. All I did was use a step drill bit and drill large holes under the carpet. I have easy access to unscrew from the top. I duck tape over the hole. Barely any road noise.

    Awesome vid as always.... I went ahead and installed my springs the other day and it was super easy took about an hour to do. Little more difficult to get the shocks out which Im wishing I had just done since I already had the springs out and what not....

      @BradyAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! At least you have some familiarity so when you do get those shocks you will know what your getting into. How's it riding with the stock shocks and new springs?

    • @claytonnichols6273
      @claytonnichols6273 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brady Adventures riding great. The springs keep it level and it doesn’t seem to lean as much in turns... since it is a DD mostly I think I’ll be good with $50 for a set of rear shocks and $50 for a set of front shocks to keep it comfortable. I don’t have drawers or bumpers or fridges so no need for me to have nicer shocks lol YET!

      Brady Adventures hey quick question. I just got a smoken deal on a 4x4labs rear bumper. I have the 865s but here is my Issue I for see. I think it might sag having that bumper making the rig not level or slight level.. should I go with 865s or 860s or 864s? I tow a 1400 lbs trailer sometimes but was going to install the air lift bags for that specific purpose. It’s a daily driver mostly with towing 2 kids so not much weight typically. Afraid I might overdue it and it be a horrible ride.... what should I do you think 🤔

    Ive done the rear shocks on mine twice. Once with a set of terrible KYB shocks and yesterday with the OEM Tokico shocks. It gets easier but its such a pain to get to the passenger side top nut. Thank goodness for ratcheting wrenches. Not sure why Toyota didn't leave a small gap between the body and frame for ease like they did on the 4runners. Great video by the way. My wife gave me the thumbs up to lift mine this summer.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I looked at a number of other shocks and kits but I ultimately choose this setup because I thought they would be adequate for the kind of off roading I do, slee was very helpful in talking me through my options, and the kit price was pretty decent. I have been really happy with the setup but know there is better stuff out there I was just trying to balance my needed performance and cost.

    I know this video is a year old, but question: Have you replaced the rear upper/lower links? Metal Tech 4x4 makes some really nice ones with the zirk grease fittings - I'm prepping for my suspension upgrade on my LX, and I'm wondering about the rear links.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not. I was going to and almost ordered them from trail tailor when I ordered my swaybar links from him. I let him know that I wasn't super hardcore offroad and going will a 2.5" lift and he said I probably didn't need them. I may do them one day but they are low on the list for me. I hope that helps.

    Great Channel! I am doing an LX470 (2000 with 200k miles on the clock) and essentially just starting to gather all the stuff to do suspension conversion for air to spring. It's an overland build with heavy slee bumpers out back, ARB up front and also a custom kitchen drawer system in the back which will remain permanently in there so quite a bit of weight. could you please list everything you purchased for your suspension conversion that would be awesome. OME is tested and true and so that's what I am choosing as well. finally are these springs strong enough for the load I am planning? you're mentioning yours being medium duty and I was wondering if I need to go to heavy constant load type ?Thanks

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will definitely want heavy springs in the back if/when you add a rear bumper.
      I purchased this kit from slee offroad
      sleeoffroad.com/product/sus-kit-06 you can pick the spring rate as part of the kit.
      I also got front and rear drop links from trail tailor

      www.trail-tailor.com/store/p73/Rear_Sway_Bar_Links_-_80_100_Series.html
      Good luck with your build sounds like it's going to be awesome!

    Hi. Am considering a similar exercise on my LC100 one question which I have not got an answer for is what did you do about the existing AHC components. Did you leave them in or did you take them out? Thanks

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My cruiser did not have AHC from the factory so I didn't need to remove anything. However I used the reservoir location for my auxiliary battery so I would probably have taken all of it out.

    Hi man , I have a lc 100 series and I just bought both front and rear iron man shock absorbers and also coil springs for the rear to give my car a lift . Do I need to change the torsion bars to heavy duty or I can still use the original torsion bars that came in the car ? Thank you

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use the original torsion bars but it won't ride as well. Aftermarket bars have a different spring rate and are designed for lift and more weight. You'll be fine but I would swap out the bars at some point.

  • @morso70

    Great Vid. Just ordered the same kit from Slee. Question for you: is it necessary replacing the front drop links as you did? Do they need to be longer to compensate for the lift? I appreciate your comments.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! They are not absolutely necessary but after you do a lift there's additional stress on them. The drop linls get the sway bars back to factory specs so your handling will be better. It was a one of the things that a lot of people recommended to me but it's also pretty easy thing to do later.

    • @morso70
      @morso70 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BradyAdventures Thank you much! it makes sense. I didn't catch if you replaced the rear drop links as well. Also, how does it ride? The Slee guy freak me out yesterday as he told me that the ride is much more rigid. I have a LX470. Then I watched your first "decision making" vid and I decided to pull the trigger.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep i also did the rear drop links too. One of the rears I had to cut off because one of the bolts was seized, only real problem I ran into. I was worried about it being a harsh ride too and that's why I ended up going with the medium weight Springs instead of the heavies. I would say my ride is firm but not harsh. I also have e-rated tires that I run between 40 and 50 psi I'm sure they contribute to a lot of the firm ride. Overall my ride is much better than it was before. I think where people run into comfort problems is putting to heavy a spring.

    Doing this on an LX470. Removing the AHC. Does anyone know if you actually need those new adjustable upper control arms or can you use the stock upper control arms?

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get the front wheels aligned to spec you will likely need the new control arms. Also, new upper control arms give you more droop which you want to maximize and when you lift the truck you will loose droop. You should have a minimum of 50-60mm of droop after the lift. This generally depends on how high you lift the truck. Thanks!

    I just bought my first rig to build up and take my 3 yr old out in and i am struggling to find what I need to get clearance for 33's I am not very handsy and will be paying a friend to do it but want a good affordable lift kit that will last for years to come... any suggestions? I initially wanted to put 35's on it but thinking it will be to expensive and re thinking to fit 33's do you have any suggestions without spending thousands on the lift alone? will this setup be a good option?

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am assuming you have a 100 series cruiser. If that is the case 33s will fit without a lift at all (as long as you don't go to wide). I ran with 33s and no lift for a while before I got the lift. I think this lift is a good balance between performance and cost and mine is holding up great. You can save a few bucks if you go with a 1.5" lift. At 1.5" you can probably skip the upper control arms which brings the price down about $500. You can always take it up another inch later by cranking the torsion bars, getting different rear springs (~$150), and UCAs. There are people that do 34s or 35s but you are either going to rub or be into a lot more money for sure. I hope that makes sense. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

      @BradyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hell yeah super cringy, it was ok when I started dreaming about having a cruiser and started getting a little cringy when I was first building it and well now it's pretty cringy. At the end of the day, I like working on cars, camping, and seeing beautiful remote places. Even though it is certainly cringy there are so many cool rigs out there these days. I used to see maybe one a month now I see them almost every day. I hope everyone is getting out there :-)
