How to: Dye Leather BMW Seats (Grey to Black Conversion!)

  • Today, we're going to be dyeing the leather rear seats on my BMW from grey to black, in order to match the rest of the interior, and bring some life into them! We're using a leather dye purchased from Amazon (links below) to restore the interior of this car on a budget. Stay tuned for a part 2 where we will restore the front seats, and the doors as well!

    That is really interesting. I am intrigued to see how this holds up over time. It would be great if this actually works because there are so many great BMWs with grey interiors, and getting them resprayed professionally is expensive (had it done before).

    Little advice. The leather should be stripped from the top coat which is like a clear coat on the car paint so the leather can absorb the dye and than protected with a top coat again to protect the dye and stop the dye transfer on to your clothes. Looks good but it might wear off because the surface was not prepared correctly and protected on top.

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I hope it bonds well to the surface. The instructions say to use a leather conditioner to protect it after fully dried, which makes sense!

      Bartoszkotowski is right. Nearly all auto leather is finished with a flexible clear coat in varying finishes (gloss /matte etc). The original layer needs to be removed with something like a paint thinner before color is applied. Then it gets resealed with the clear finish. (I worked at a leather repair product company)

    Painted black trim pieces on the seats won't look good I think. You can easily tell they've been repainted. The paint will probably peel off as well.
    It would be much better to get a set of factory black seats. They would be cheap if you get the standard ones (Not M Sport). They don't make M Sport version for the wagon anyway :)
    I was also wondering is that dye going to stay on the seats or it will stick to your pants in the hot summer days.
