Wendy's family was _indirectly_ established before. We saw "Manly Dan" Corduroy going fishing with his sons in the second episode, and Wendy identified those same boys as her brothers via a photo in episode 7, _Double Dipper._
*In Blu-ray commentary track, series creator Alex Hirsch admits that the series might've done too many episodes driven by Dipper's crush on Wendy. The reason they kept using it is because it was the strongest motivator to get Dipper to the point of desperation where he'd be willing to summon a video game character.*
It's hinted at throughout the earlier episodes that Wendy's family is the crazy lumberjack and the red headed boys! This is the closest to spelling it out as the show gets, but yup! Manly Dan is Wendy's dad!
(The show does say it very explicitly later. But we won't talk about that, because too many spoilers. ;-) This is certainly the closes the show gets to saying it in Season 1.)
season 1 was a fun kickstarter, to get used to the characters and the basic plots. once we know who to focus on s2 starts to set the main plot and links most of the plots and characters that appeared in s1.

I remember laughing when dipper did that stance when I was a kid. This episode was one of my most favorite episodes as a kid. (My favorite episodes in season 1 tied as first is Ep 12, (Because that episode had always been my favorite when I was younger.) And episode 19, (Introducing one of the best cartoon villains, if not of all time. Also because of plot events, foreshadowing, etc.) Ep 20 comes in a close second.
When you guys finish Season 1, try and watch the Gravity Falls Shorts! They are little stories that were ideas for episodes but were later scrapped. I'm pretty sure they aired them after season 1 so their are no spoilers for season 2. And there are more clues and puzzles in them!!
They introduced the Manly Dan and his boys in episode 2 and in a later episode (the party where Dipper clones himself I think) Wendy shows Dipper a picture of herself with her brothers to show how she's much taller than they are.
While the show definitely gets better in season 2, I think some people in the comments of these vids have their memories clouded by the hype of theorizing and solving secret codes and hidden easter eggs when the show was originally airing lol
Agreed. It totally makes sense why everyone is all like, "OMG SEASON 2!!!" But I like slowing down and appreciating Season 1 again for what it is, which is some really funny, smart, goofy episodes. Plus, I think what people tend to forget is that Season 2 wouldn't cause the reaction it does, without all of the groundwork laid by Season 1. You have to spend that first season getting to know and love the characters of the town, for you to care as much about developments in Season 2. So yeah, it makes sense that people are hyped to show their friends S2 (or, hyped to see reactors react to it), but you do have to accept that for these folks to have as strong a reaction to it as you did, they have to go on the same journey that you did. (More or less! Because, thankfully for everyone watching the show now, they don't have to wait MONTHS AND MONTHS for the next episode. Even doing only 1 ep a week, you can get through the show in less than a year, rather than the FOUR YEARS Disney took to air it.) I would certainly say that folks just have to accept that watching the show now is also going to be a different experience, with respect to the codes and the theorizing. It's really impossible to replicate that experience. I've seen some of the reactors get into solving the codes in the end credits, which is fun. I wonder if they'll stick with it when it becomes so much harder to do that in S2. But there's no way to repeat the phenomenon of having weeks and months to anticipate the next episode and feverishly theorizing about the mysteries with friends. And that's okay! Because it's still a brilliant show.

Hey since you liked this episode, I think you’d really like The Amazing World of Gumball … not only is the show amazing, but there’s a scene similar to this episode.
Lots of people say "it gets good during the second season" or "wait until you get to season two" but I love the first season. It's way more light-hearted and fun. The whole show is great but I think too many fans p**p on the first half.

It isn't that season one isn't good until now, it's that all the best parts of the show get cranked up to 11 later on, with the main plot that's been hovering in the background kicking into gear. The show just goes up to unexpected levels, leaps off in an impressive flip, sticks the landing, and hits the ground running *straight* through the next season. Like, it's consistently better with ea ep and is building up things that come later and expanding the lore.... So good. Can't wait.

This show was WAY ahead of its time
Season 2 is more serialized. I wouldn't say it gets better or worse just that it gets a much more of an overall story from week to week.

Unpopular opinion I love season one!! I know season 2 is when the plot kicks in but I just love the comedy of season one
