    I really do not like the new hints for public trees. It just changed yesterday for me (I live in California). Ancestry used to clump all the public trees together as one hint, putting the top three in a side by side view, sorted by trees with the most sources. Now each public tree is it's own hint and comes one at a time. Not a fan, I rarely look at public trees, and when I do, I look for the one that has the most sources. It's very hard to do now with the new setup. It also takes longer to "ignore" them. Additionally, it doesn't show the side by side view to see which details differ from your own tree. :-)

      Absolutely agree with you and I registered a complaint. The changes only came to me on 27July. We have now lost so much real estate t the top, the left and with this rubbish about having each tree appear on its own to have to check AND they have taken away the number of sources, so it is now a lottery. I will be ignoring all these suggestions along with the community trees as it is too risky. Not sure how they determined that of these changes are improvements … the removal of the grouping of other trees to check or ignore, means that each appears singly, you think you have dealt with all hints, click out and another one shows up. I had one yesterday which I had to click into 8 … EIGHT times. I hate it .. but feel slightly better after this rant!😂😂😂

    Thanks for the video. Ancestry is adding a few things but keeping the same limits of what they provide. For genetic genealogists who want to solve brick walls with family lines that go past the records era (prior to early 1800's) the little extra's don't mean a lot. What will be really groundbreaking is if they finally let us know (on our matches) the chromosomes and segments (starting point and ending point) on our matches (which would be a chromosome browser. MyHeritage, 23andMe, FTDNA, Gedmatch and now Living DNA are all providing this. Why is Ancestry the holdout ? They need to get on board.

    I am not liking their new display of shared tree's in the Hints. You now got to go into the the other tree to see the user profile to access them to message them.

    I would love it if ancestry would allow you to see relationship to home person on other people's trees... sometimes I find a hint that someone has ..say my father...in their tree... but when I look at their tree... I can not figure out how he fits... if his profile page on their tree... say he is... for example.... x cousin y times removed.. it would help me to see if this person is related directly or via marriage or other connection...now I spend a lot of time chasing down various options

    ❗NOTE: Depending on your browser's zoom, the options on the left side panel may be different. I keep my browser (Chrome) at 100% zoom, so it does look different for me.
    On the left side of my tree, I only have 6 tools (View, Gallery, Dots, Home Person, Zoom In, Zoom Out). All the other ones shown here (Find, Hints, DNA) are included in the Dots/More pop up for me.
    However, if I zoom my browser out, the options would show up like above. Just wanted to let people know this in case they were confused by not seeing the same tools.
    Also, I just had an update when I signed on today, letting me know that we can now right-click on people in our tree to view numerous edit options for that person.

    • @lizsmith7816
      @lizsmith7816 ปีที่แล้ว

      That change hasn't shown up on my tree, yet, thankfully. If I do look at the public tree hints, I'll often choose to look at the one with the second most records. Often, I find that the top tree is the work of a leaf raker who attaches every hint, whether it applies to their ancestor, or not.

    Connnie, all your videos are great but this was one exceptional. I have a suggestion for Ancestry - would like to be able to create a task list on a person's profile and then be able to pull up all the tasks on my tree in one spot. I do use a task list elsewhere but since most of my work is in Ancestry it would be great to have one there. Maybe it's already there and I don't know it??? I know there is one in Family search (To Do List)

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Gail. There is a task list on the tree view but not in the profile view. I agree with you. That would be great to have it on the individual profiles!

    I love to see who has viewed my trees. When I reach out to the views I get about a 75% response rate.
    I love the red comment icon also. Because use it to make comments about ancestors, such as other wrong information I find about them in other trees, or cautions about a similar person in the same area with the same name but who has a completely different family when you dig into them. It also helps me when I'm returning to them. Once again thank you for an excellent video.

    An excellent tutorial video, clearly explained and demonstrated; very informative. A must-see for novices, especially.
    However I have one criticism of Ancestry's changes: why oh why, would the tree view options have been relabelled from Pedigree and Descendant (or Family?) Views to Horizontal and Vertical?
    1: the symbols already clearly appear to be Horizontal and Vertical! 2: which I hate most, I feel that Ancestry is insulting the intelligence of its members by dropping the conventional and universally accepted term "Pedigree" from its vocabulary.

    One negative thing I noticed is the family tree hints. You only get one tree at a time now, instead of a group of several trees. I like to open several trees to mine for missing information and possible clues and it helps seeing multiple at a time to weed out the bad trees. I do like the big pop up window (from records search) for confirming multiple people on a record (different than the side panel confirmation view).

  • @AJtubified
    @AJtubified ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Connie you don't have to change the home person to change the relationship focus person.
    When you single click on someone in Family View, under the wrench icon dropdown the first option is to View his/her family tree. That changes the focus to the person you've selected and will show relationships to that person *if* the Relationship line labels is turned on in Family View.
    Great video as always!

    • @lindab9608
      @lindab9608 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do have to change who you are in the tree if you want to see all relationships for the person. For instance, I’m a distant cousin to my granddaughter on her father’s side. Making her the focus person will show her relationship to ancestors, but not fifth cousins, once removed. I must change the “who you are in the tree” to her in order to see the relationship on the profile page.

    Thanks, Connie. Great video.
    You can also make a person the focus person without going to their profile page by clicking their name in the tree view. In the drop-down box click the little wrench then click on “view his[her] family tree.”
    This might have been changed since you made this video, Connie, but it is not not necessary to change the home person for the “relationship line labels” to show (if you have it switched on). It works if it is the focus person. If I am viewing a person’s family tree (as mentioned above), the relationship line labels will show.

    This was really helpful, Connie. Genealogy is a wintertime activity for me, and I'll take up a 6-month subscription in the next month or so; having this update will make my work easier once my subscription is active.
    I have 2 functions I would like to see:
    1) change the relationship line color from gray to yellow or dashed to indicate a Suspicious Relationship [people who I've added in my early research years, but who I suspect may not be an actual direct relative]; and
    2) the ability to dissociate myself from a tree [where I created a tree for a friend or colleague, but I am no longer involved].
    I need to create Tree Tags this season.... such a great idea... for "Floating Tree", "Left Off Here", and probably "Immigrant"
    Thanks for your videos; you give me such good ideas for my next season's research!

    Some tweaks are nice others not so much. I hate the new view to add records which is just the side view to add records enlarged with I never liked. Even when opening the record to avoid the side view I can no longer see the information from my tree which is annoying. It's so annoying I may even consider unsubscribing for awhile. It kills me to get all this window dressing and still no chromosome browser. 🤷‍♂

Go to an ancestors profile view>near the top there is a pencil icon or the +tag icon>in the side panel choose the drop down menus to see your options... or create your own under the Custom Tags. If you don't see the MyTreeTags in the side panel, look to see if there is an edit button near the bottom of the side panel.

    fantastic video as always, Connie.
    all this focus on new tree view functionality explains why part of the tree view in ipados mobile app is now broken. as a former programmer i can see what’s happened.
    in the new version of the web app when you click from tree view into a person’s quick profile under the wrench icon you can select “view his/her family tree” and you will see their ancestors. if there are descendants, press the little arrow below their icon to display them.
    in tree view in the ipados mobile, if a given ancestor has descendants, you clicked the little arrow beneath their icon and the descendants would be displayed. now when you click the little arrow their ancestors popup in a doubly overlaid layer. very messy and confusing . i did just discover that if they have ancestors, a small tree icon shows up in their icon which if clicked, sets things right.
    how can we pass this oops onto ancestry?

      If the area is in Beta, there will be a feedback button in the lower right corner. Using that from the area where the issue is located will send a message to the product manager directly. Don't expect a response. It is my understanding that they do read and review those feedback messages weekly.

      I do have a Samuel Booth 1810-1889 from Wayne, Augusta, Virginia... but I have not done any work on this ancestor yest. He is supposed to be my 3XGF. I have not marked him as verified. I must have imported him from the Massie book. There is a Booth book and a Ferguson book. Samuel's father is Charles Booth (1774-1821) and his mother is Elizabeth Ferguson (1785-1862). I'm almost positive I got this from the Charles Booth book by Massie. If you want to further this conversation, contact me through my website at GenealogyTV.org. Intensely dislike the new tree hints. Intensely dislike the new arrangement of everything. If it ain't broke... I just attempted to add members of household from a 1950 census. Impossible. Click, click, click, click, not a match, click click click. I gave up and moved on. If all of it is like this I won't be adding anything from ancestry. And for pete's sake! Do I really need to have children and grandchildren labeled on the family tree page? I'm not an idiot. I know that a descendant of a person is his child! What I'd really like is ALL SPOUSES as the default. I change both of those all the time for everyone I look at.

    Sorry, but you totally lost me by 4:59. I will just have to go into Ancestry and see for myself if I can figure out what is going on. I wish they had little "i's: in a circle that you can click on and it would give you information on what it is and how to use it.

    What about when someone has a DNA test - but because of illegitimacy and not knowing exactly where/how they connect - they erroneously attach themselves to the wrong ancestor. This has happened in my tree and it's very confusing trying to find the correct people when wrong people (or at the very least unverified people) are showing up?

      Yes you can print from the profile view under tools on the upper right side. You can also order printed books under the Extras tab. In the tree view you can print from the left nav bar under the three dot menu.

    Would be gd if you could colour the whole page of a person in different pale colours on the pages of direct ancestors so they be seen quickly .eg I have 1 colour for any direct ancestor associated with Mum's Father's ancestors, Mum's Mothers Ancestors etc

  • @lindacarroll6896
    @lindacarroll6896 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am working on a sibling downline. I have found that you can sometimes get information about a sibling that helps you with your direct ancestor. However, in this downline I have found a person that has been confused with someone else, which is probably not helping the other person's research. Both women married a Mr. Knowles, but not the same Mr. Knowles, so you would think that might be a hint they have the wrong person. I am fairly certain they have not done much to verify this person, because they go to great pains to point out that she is a twin. My person never shows up with a twin in any of the documentation I have found. Is there any nice way to tell these people they are not the descendants of her father? The father only goes by initials on most documents, so he could easily be confused with numerous persons. The twin person does not have the same name, so they are calling it her nickname. Huh?
    Would straightening out these crossed up profiles [hint trails] make a good video?

      Times like that, once I have sorted out the issue, I leave a comment on the other person's tree. They either pay attention or not, but you can only do what you can do.

    Connie, Out of curiosity what are your thoughts about ancestry coming up with a designation color for a line that stems from adoption? For example I have a cousin that he and his wife raised a child that wasn't officially adopted but was known as the surname when growing up and the individual had children and gave them the surname of the family that raised him.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wish they would allow us to color any line of the tree. Right now the only way I know how to do that is in Family Tree Maker... but then that is a personal view and not online.
