Gambyong Pangkur dance, featuring Heni Savitri and Lisa Ho, was choreographed by Raden Mas Tandhakusuma in 1954. Often performed as a welcoming dance, it depicts a girl moving into adulthood. In the course of the dance, she makes herself up to draw the attention of young men.
Gambyong dancers were developed in the royal court of Surakarta during the rule of Paku Buwana IV (ruled 1788-1820) from the dances of itinerant female performers. Dancer-choreographers in the palace altered the style and sequence of movements to suit court aesthetics. This genre derives its name from that of Mas Ajeng Gambyong, a woman who both sang and danced.
The title of the dance is taken from the name of composition that accompanies it, Ladrang Pangkur, which is based on the same ladrang form used in Peksi Kuwung, the first piece on the program. Unlike that piece, however, it shifts through three different levels of irama (rhythmic density), which bring various parts of the gamelan to the fore while others recede to the sonic background.
