  • Here I give my take on the current state of the Japanese indie film industry as of 2024. This is a perspective from an independent filmmaker living as a foreigner in Tokyo, Japan.

Finnish film industry is very much the same, exclusive and pretty much closed for the foreigners trying to get in. I can definitely relate and this needs to be changed.

Yo man, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks this. I thought maybe I just wasn't in the right circles, but you're right. Everything is really gate kept with the studio systems here. Even still it's quite surprising the amount of low quality Japanese films I see on Amazon prime out here.
But I think with the rise of social media in Japan, I think it's a great opportunity to capitalize on a new way of presenting your stories and reaching out to a younger generation of Japanese viewers who are craving more global content. Heck, most of my Japanese friends don't even watch Japanese Tv or movies.

Good point! Social media is a great tool that can help shift the perspective on Japanese cinema. We need more people who are willing to push for higher quality Japanese films.
