      It just came to me, since both domestic and global box office have little movement after summer, have you ever thought of doing monthly charts? As in the top 5 highest grossing of the current month?

    Honestly, Charlie's Angels didn't look that interesting from the trailers. I didn't know anything about this controversy around male female audience, but when I decided to go to a movie last weekend, Charlie's Angels wasn't even an option I considered. That doesn't mean I hate watching female led movies, I ended up going to Terminator. It just means, perhaps this movie didn't excite the audience. Diversity, gender balance, representation, while extremely important, can't substitute for making an entertaining film.

      Philippe Gélinas it was Elizabeth Banks talking about the movie that angered people the most. For better or worse, it turned some people off. If it looks like a good movie, I will probably see it. I think Charlie’s Angels didn’t do that and it hurt the movie the most, but her comments didn’t help. While sexism is part of it, its also people that just want a movie to do well based on how good it is, not who’s on camera or behind it. They don’t like movies just because it stars men, and its the same for women.

    I'm sure one reason Wonder Woman had a larger female draw is that she's a well known pop culture figure with a long history.
    She's the original "girl power" icon who's familiar to females from 6 to 60.

      I am a man and I love Wonder Woman comics and so do a lot of men. I like Wonder Woman because it is a mix of modern super heroism and Greek mythology, so the concept itself is already interesting. Wonder Woman isn't another teen girl saves the world story or a character that feels the need to be rude or condescending to be empowered (see Captain Marvel). Wonder Woman is a grown woman who is a warrior and though she is a goddess, she is very human. She can kill an army of men with her bare hands but she can also fall in love and be emotionally hurt by a man as well. Just like a man can be emotionally hurt by a woman. Wonder Woman is confident but not arrogant (again see Captain Marvel) and compassionate.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, Wonder Woman is a feminist icon. Charly's Angeles aren't, that was actually a pretty sexist show in a lot of ways.
      Plus, female viewers are no longer forced to content with warmed up cost.

    • @Movies123Online
      @Movies123Online 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd agree. Women don't have that same nostalgia with Captain Marvel. Not every woman watched those films for the same reason. For me, I watched Wonder Woman because I grew up with the character even though I dislike Snyder's direction of the DCEU. I watched Captain Marvel because I like the MCU and assumed I'd have a good time b/c of that association.

    Charlie's Angels needs a fresh spin on it - all out spoof, satire, hard edge action, musical, horror, animated, Deadpool 4th wall breaking, mission impossible spy thriller, etc. Anything except the formula we've seen before, which is what the marketing is telling me about it. The curiosity factor alone would bring audiences out. If we wanted that same thing for nostalgia, the tv show and movies are already available on home media.

    I think the major reason why the first Charlie's Angels movie was a hit while this one wasn't was the star power. Kristen Stewart is the biggest star and she ain't that big of a star (maybe if this was fresh off of Twilight but not now). Naomi Scott could've been a bigger star but you never saw her name on all the Aladdin advertisements. And I don't know who the third actress is.
    But the 2000 movie had Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, two MAJOR movie stars at the time, and Lucy Lui, who was on a hit television show at the time.

    • @Axterix13
      @Axterix13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say more that Lucy had a bit of a rep as being an action star, rather than whatever TV show she happened to be in back then. And while star power definitely helped, I think a huge part of it was that the actors just seemed like they were having fun. They had chemistry together, and the studio/actors really focused on that to sell people on the idea that they'd have a fun time watching the movie.

    Genuinely pleased to hear Dan treat these comments with a ton of respect and talk about them in detail and even when he disagrees is really cautious and polite in tone.
    I think that it's easy for both sides to get loud and live in denial of others' points of views, so I love Dan for being a calm voice of reason who puts the numbers and the data over feelings every time (even if he gets surprised by the results). We need more of him :)

      Oh and if you look at the imdb ratings of charlie's angels and the ghostbusters reboot and captain marvel and stuff, and compare them to equivalent quality films that have male leads, there are clearly a huge number of trolls intentionally downvoting them as soon as they're able to. So there is a lot of negative attacking on twitter and on the internet in general that the cast will be bombarded with non stop, I'm sure :(

    This week I just wanted to say... I'm so thankful for this channel, this show and Dan in particular. If it weren't for him and his recommendations, I would've missed out on a lot of movies I've watched this year that I have thoroughly enjoyed.
    Last Friday was my birthday and I started the celebrations on Thursday night watching Parasite with my best friend. Man, we had a BLAST. So yeah, just thank you 💛

    To counteract Elizabeth Banks comments about male cinema patrons, I give you The Predator. A film that is basically macho action men shooting the hell outta everything. I don't recall the box office being stellar for that one, and that's squarely aimed towards males. People just don't want to go see a movie that looks average.

    • @lawrencescales9864
      @lawrencescales9864 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neil Hutchinson predator is great though, but I think both where poorly marketed. Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and Malificent prover banks wrong. The studio fumbled it. She can’t blame the audience.

      @@lawrencescales9864 The history of cinema is littered with box office flops that just didn't find an audience. I like Elizabeth Banks as an actress, but she's clutching at straws to find an excuse for the failure.

    It's interesting to see Wonder Woman being the exception to the rule with regards to demographic. I think part of it is that Wonder Woman feels far more like a fairytale story wrapped up in a superhero film. It has magical worlds, a beautiful princess, the handsome rogue, romance, an evil wizard, mother-daughter relationships, adventure, compassion, etc. It's not just a movie about a girl who can fight, it's got a lot of elements that are attractive to women.

    I'd like to see an in-depth analysis of gender breakdowns. Because there's a Stark difference between action movies (star wars, Terminator) and female-driven movies with action (hunger games) in Dan's chart. Which makes me wonder if men will just turn out more for action movies in general because it's a stereotypical male genre that usually markets towards men.
    The main reason I didn't see Charlie's angels is because I saw 1 trailer months ago and didn't even know it was coming out if not for this show. Meanwhile, I see a trailer for 21 bridges about 5 times a day.

    • @Weaponator18

      I think Aliens is a very good test subject for this. Ripley is universally praised as an action icon, with very good reason. So what the male/female splits look like there is something I'm very curious about.

    I would guess that Charlies Angels isn't exact;y a property that gets people excited. (the opening weekend numbers indicate that) Elizabeth Banks might also be a little too inside baseball since she produced and directed the film. I love films with strong female leads, but I had no interest in seeing this in a theater, but I will on digital eventually.

    Concept and how well the concept is sold to the public is most important when picking a movie. The director matters some. The days of the "Star" are over. Stars are only an extra incentive to the concept and can no longer sell a film on their names alone. Which I feel is a good thing.

    Wow Dan, thanks for those charts for the Charlie's Angels segment! That's fascinating. What I think would be interesting to investigate further is if we can see the box office legs of female led action movies based on demographics, i.e. if female action movies that successfully cater towards a female audience, have longer legs at the box office? Many of the other female led movies in that chart with heavily skewed male audiences did not have great legs.
