  • See for yourself Saudi Arabia"s marvel wonder. Measuring 4km wide and 250 meters / 820 feet deep. The bottom of the crater is covered with white sodium phosphate crytals that create a glittering crust visible from the sky. It was once thought to have been formed by a meteorite crashing to earth but later revealed to be a maar crater formed by volcanic activity in the form of an undergroind phreatic eruption- a massive steam explosion generated by a molten basaltic magma coming into contact with subterranean water.
It is around 250km and 2-3 hour drive north Taif. The trail was rough with steps hewn into the rocks. Make sure you bring plenty of water and sturdy hiking boots. Arriving before sunrise is highly recommended.
Our journey to the center of the crater did mot come easy but as wonderful as the views are from above, the real magic happens when you climb down into the heart of the crater.
You may also watch part 1 of our journey from Makkah to Taif during our overnight stay.
