This Hubsan is so picky with its GPS acquisition. I have an Aerosky X350 ($349) quad...place it ANWHERE and in a couple seconds it gets a solid GPS lock.
Your case is the first I've heard of "many people could not perform calibration 2" with the H501s. I'll have to keep your method in mind if my quad should ever fail to successfully calibrate. Thanks for sharing. DJ SOUL FORCE
...what I've found as well is 'location'. The calibration just didn't seem to 'want' to work on certain spots. I moved a couple feet N,S,E or West of that spot and it DID work....weird but true.
If you're still not getting the 2nd calibration simply change your physical location by a couple feet...you can even reverse the clockwise & anticlockwise direction cause this works as well
sirhilsam, thank you so much. You have saved me and my children much pain and frustration. Truly heroic. Thanks for solving the problem, and thanks for sharing the solution. You rock.
...got the quad...flew...then it never calibrated for days. Was goin to contact Gearbest because THREE other experienced RC fliers and myself couldn't figure it out. My wife and I experimented with the turning movement from horizontal to vertical and it worked. I'll try this until I build up the cojones to update firmware.
This should not be this complicated my friend. perhaps you should perform a firmware update to resolve the problem. I am currently doing an entire series of videos about this quad currently on my channel. battery mods for the controller and everything.
my problem with the firmware update is i've read some real issues encountered by hubsan users after update...and this IS a pain to calibrate. My Aerosky X350 is merely to plug in and wait...and that drone us 300 bucks. But i'll check your channel...thanks for the info.
But in your case, you may need a firmware update, calibrating this quad should not have to be a ritual, just a dance! Theroy is with the firmware, if it flies great, don't update! But in some cases like your's, where you are having issues with calibrating, you may need to do a little research and determine if a firmware update OR downgrade may be right for you. Mine worked & flies well, right out the box. I kept thinking to myself, "I must have something else to complete before I fly this thing" and she was ready to fly in a couple of minutes. I hate that I must calibrate before each flight or after each power shutdown! Check my channel for reviews of this quad, I love it! DJ SOUL FORCE
Yes I am. Change your physical location by a few feet (from where it wasn't calibrating) and try again. You can even try reversing the clockwise and anticlockwise turns. I've found a 'sweet spot' in the savannah where I fly and I ALWAYS calibrate it there without fail...even marked it off.
In the video there is a concert floor, think there is a lot of steel reinforcing in that, also I see a lot of iron in the area, not good for calibrating. Also I have heard not too calibrate with your Smart phone close. I am waiting for mine too arrive, just hope I do not have this problem
I tried that when I first got it and it wasn't calibrating: no phone, no concrete, grass. It all came down to physical location and routine. I even got it to calibrate indoors a couple times (not recommended). Crazy stuff. But don't worry, when you get yours you'll experiment to get your ideal routine and locations.
sirhilsam I have the 502E and no problem with calibrating. I t is a pity too see so many problems with the 501, because it a nice product. Hubsan should do its best too fix this
My brother recently borrowed this drone to do a project with his daughter. We calibrated it this way and then tried the old way. surprisingly it worked so I don't know if Hubsan fixed the issue.
Tried that. We tried the instruction as given in the manual. and experienced TH-cam drone flyers. I believe this drone's gps acquisition is just a bit touchy at times and dependent on location in the world...so you gotta try everything and stick with what works for you.
Can't believe how 'temperamental' this drone is when it comes to calibrating the compass. I have a cheap-ish Aerosky X350-just leave it for a few seconds and it's good to go-Wolverine could calibrate this with no issues.
I have a Syma x8 also, don't have to do anything with it, just bind it and fly, but it does not do what the Hubsan can do either. I guess thats what it takes.
I tried the recommended way and got the calibration 2 correct about twice: once in a cluttered room in the house and once on a beach on the North Coast of Trinidad. My wife and I came up with this method after trying everything else to no avail and I was just about fed up and going to ask for a refund. This weird method works for me now in most locations in my country.
Great a Hands on demostration. Thanks New Drone Owner
Thanks my fellow rc flier...we learn more as we get deeper into this hobby.
Thanks, it really does work better than most other techniques.

awesome advise thank you so much...way easier now to calibrate.

Glad to help. I am no expert and my RC journey is one of experience and learning as I go along. TH-cam users like yourself are my best RC Teachers👍
Any idea why my NEW Hubsan Advanced 501S won't send a video feed to my remote or take any pictures or video?
I have no idea, but you can check the rc forums on that problem. Also search through TH-cam videos with this quad on that issue.
You made that hard work

Just went on your channel and you confirmed my fear..."Do Not Update Firmware"...thanks for the headsup warning.
sirhilsam I try to keep everyone as up-to-date as possible with the h501s

yes Trini. Teach dem!!!
Same problem i am having...are you from trinidad by chance?

your turing the wrong way per the book .start spinning rt then camera down to the right

Except that you are within 10 feet of metal. no. no. no. No bling, no controller, keys, coins or anything, says it right in the manual.

You are doing it wrong, that calibration is for the Phantom.

Whatever works..If it's wonky..do it again..that works for me.
