  • One of the great races of the past. Muller went earlier and put up what seemed to be an unbeatable time. Zurbriggen, his teammate went next to last. I was more a fan of Muller, being more of my kind of guy. Zurbriggen was a really straight arrow, but one great skier and a fearless competitor.

    I watched this OVER AND OVER AND OVER again when I was a kid. I seem to remember the first turns of the course being different though. Funny how one pictures it in the mind and it changes over the years. Glad I found this. Brings back memories.

    One of the greatest duels of the 80's in alpine skiing: Zurbriggen won World Championship downhill gold in 85' in Bormio ahead of Müller. Two years later in Crans Montana Peter Müller won gold ahead of Zurbriggen. But in Calgary was again Zurbriggen's turn to take gold. Interesting that Müller won 5 consecutive downhill medals at the big events (84-89) but just one gold, the rest were silver.

    for those of you who don't speak german, at 2:40 he says "scheisse"!! :-)
    zurbriggen was an absolute maniac on skis..always full out and hell bent to win, a huge contrast to his personality..my all time favorite..

      My dad’s friend used to call me “Keirmin Zurbriggen” when I was a kid. I was the slower Zurbriggen though. 😁. I ended up blowing my knee out racing downhill.

    I was only 1 year old during the Calgary Olympics, so I'm no expert. However, from what I've seen of these 80s Alpine Skiing clips, Müller looked a beast only at Downhill skiing, but Zurbriggen could win at every single discipline, from Downhill to Slalom, which almost nobody else could boast. Wasn't Zurbriggen phenomenal to be such a complete skier, capable of beating anyone in any discipline?

    I appreciate this video. But I really wish somebody could download the full race, not just Pirmin Zurbriggen's run.

    One of the few videos of Calgary 88 where you saw the entire run. I remember spending a long evening cutting up pine boughs and making mulch for track definition. It wasn't until 10 or 12 years later that we started using blue dye.

    Mueller was loved by the Swiss ??? Rofl good joke
    Zurbriggen was one of the best racer ever and much more talented than Mueller

      Mueller was talented as well, but he was a lot cockier and not as humble in real life as Zurbriggen. To me this is what really sets them apart. Pirmin was an all-time great talent and could have gone on to more but decided to quit while still in his prime.

      Mueller needed a bigger helmet; that’s why he didn’t win. The helmet was constricting his brain. 😁

    We must see also this: Zurbriggen only won thanks to the fact that he could run with the number 14 and had the best conditions, while Mueller had to run with the number 1, when it was still snowing strongly. Indeed Mueller was much more loved by the Swiss public, because he was a fighter who hadn't grown up in the mountains like so many others. In 1987, when Mueller became the world champion in Valais, he was whistled by the local public, because he had "dared" beating the "lovely" Zurbriggen.

    • @markusmueller2246
      @markusmueller2246 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there is no way the Swiss loved Mueller better than Pirmin and the fact that he had number 14 was not such big advantage anymore as the night before was cold and the track was rock hard when number one went down. However Pirmin had the advantage as he knew Peter put in one hell of a run. So it was all or nothing for Pirmin. Remember that Nakiska track was to Pirmis advantage to begin with.
