Hey Kevin, so I finally got my plug and puffing away right now. So I prepared this as suggested. It smokes very well, thick smoke.I 'm sipping this one....I get good Virginia, very slight rum aroma and dark fruit on retrohale. Very pleasant but I think I 've been rocking this boat long enough... wrapping it up for the day...nachos time
I have not experienced a plug tobacco, but look forward to trying it. Being a Navy veteran, I’m a salty dog and this one definitely has my attention! Good seeing you again, Kevin! I always look forward to your videos. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Hello Kevin that salty dog sound very well i dont have smoke this tobacco but i think its a very good tobacco In this moment i smoke with you 1Q really a super good aromatic sweet and no bite.Thank you my friend for this complete video and goods smoke.😎😎😎😎😎🏡🏡🏡
My favorite tobaccos by far are navy blends, and I love tobacco in plug or rope form. The act of preparing my tobacco to smoke is cathartic for me, and Salty Dogs is an excellent example of my favorites.
What a fantastic looking plug. As always I can almost taste this blend thanks to your wonderfully descriptive review. This one is going on the must try list for sure. Hoping you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving together Kevin. Thank you for all you continue to do for the pipe smoking community.
After you recommended Pegasus and Salty Dogs to my Father and I, we went on to purchase Orlik Golden Sliced, Pegasus, Bayou Morning, Steamworks, C&D Burley Flake No. 3, and Salty Dogs. We enjoy them all and each blend has something different to offer, yet I find myself gravitating toward Salty Dogs with its satisfyingly tiny yet dense plug, its straightforward yet deep flavors, and involved preparation. Following our encounter with Pegasus, we decided to retry Sir Walter Raleigh and lo and behold, we enjoyed it! After training our palates with Pegasus we could detect more flavor and nuance in the blend. No longer does burley taste like butt!
Excellent reviews, I recently discovered your channel and subscribed. I have been smoking pipes for over 10 years (on and off) and love learning about and trying different blends. Your content is awesome! Love the hat!
Suitable outfit and great review . I agree with all what you said! , salty dogs is a complex playful tobacco and has its own nuances to make it different from other Va/pers . For the price and availability I usually order it from Germany along with Rustica , Stockton & the Sonlani blends
@@hobbitonpiper I work outside every day in Florida plugs are the only thing that can survive staying in my work truck and not dry out. Makes sense why the sailors would have preferred it.
Nice to see you back! I’ve yet to try any plug tobacco but have some Spark Plug in the cellar. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving and plenty to be thankful for in your life. Be well.
Nice review there Kevin, I've heard lots of positive reviews on Salty Dogs. You had the Captain Jack Sparrow look going on which suits you well. Anyway hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving day with family and friends. Take care my friend and I will see you down the road. As always your friend Tommy
I decided to smoke along with this one. I find a citrus sweet and fruit flavor in this blend. Smooth to smoke and a little spice from the Perique. I agree it is a stone fruit however, I can put a finger on it other than a pleasant stone fruit flavor. it is a wonderul blend and a regular for me.
Hey Kevin, great to see you! That is a fantastic looking plug. I definitely want to try this one. The way that plug looks sold me on it. Reminds me of how Peterson 3 P's looks. The hat suits you just fine by the way and of course the Happiest Intro and Outro music on TH-cam. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi Howard, Frog Morton’s CELLAR was aged with stave cubes cut from whiskey barrels, but my understanding is that the tobacco was never aged in the entire whiskey barrel as that was considered to have likely been too overpowering. There were many blends in the Frog Morton series. Frog Morton’s Cellar was the one aged with whiskey stave cubes, and a stave cube was included in each sealed tin.
@@hobbitonpiper nice! I have a whole collection of knives for EDC, camping, fishing, etc. Closest thing to that is my Zero Tolerance with the assisted open. I haven’t picked up any Kershaws yet.
Not entirely the same but I’ve just ordered some gawith navy flake and a clay pipe to go with it. I’m very excited to go down this rabbit hole. Happy smokes, Kevin!
I have a pouch of salty dogs I received from a gaw about 2 years ago. I ran across it a few weeks ago getting to my stash of P.S Navy flake and Bullseye flake. I want to try it so badly; however I want to get some more age on it since I forgot about it. How much better does it get with a few years of age? Or is it good the day you receive it?
It’s good now but seems to be improving with age as well. This is one I think you should go ahead and try now, preparing it as I show in the video. You can then always drop the remaining plug in a mason jar and age it further if you choose.
As a former Navy man, and avid reader of Patrick O’Brien this is high on my list to try. Separately, does anyone know if Hearth & Home tins go on sale? If so what site? Looking to stock up soon. Many thanks.
I think you’d enjoy trying this one! It’s fun to me to work with plug tobacco. As far as H&H tin sales, I’m not sure, but several online shops will occasionally have site-wide percentage-off sales so I’d watch for those :)
Hey Kevin, was looking forward to a new video from you. Neat plug! I tried cutting flakes into cubes as you suggested in your previous video. Great! That`s the way I`m going to prepare any dense flakes/ plugs from now on. Now, different tobaccos vary in moisture content but, on average, how much dry -time do you give when cutting into cubes? Wish you and your loved ones nice Thanksgiving and thank you for this wonderful review.
Dry time is completely dependent on personal preference and original moisture level…I don’t dry my tobaccos nearly as much as others it seems. I don’t mind relights at all, and I want all of those flavorful oils in my bowl :). That being said, some blends do burn/perform better with some ample drying time…you’ll just have to experiment. I used to let pretty much every prepared flake dry for at least 20 minutes, but I seem to follow that general rule less and less these days.
@@hobbitonpiper Thank you, I was thinking this way lately as well, less drying time and more flavors. I think it`s time for me to invest in a good lighter :-)
I lit up a bowl of Salty Dogs in my Nording Compass to share the experience with you. I also really like this blend. I don't pull it out often but I do have some in the cellar. I agree, I find it to be light and airy at first and about halfway down it gets bold Virginia with some fruit, and a bit spicy. I typically let mine sit out about thirty minutes. I think it's best in small bowls. Actually I've found I prefer small bowls of virginias or mainly virginian blends- and on the dryer side. I realized this after I smoked some Yorktown in a small bowl. It was a Ropp bullhorn cutty. That's the tobacco that made me realize the effect the size of the bowl has. Am I crazy or does anyone else notice this?
The pipe you choose matters, absolutely. Chamber size, shape, stem…how you pack it, light it, your cadence, what you just ate or drank, even the weather outside. It all matters.
As usual, I'm interest in trying Salty Dogs based on your review. Currently out of stock, but I'll grab some as soon as I can. I need to wait, anyway, before smoking it as I had a dental implant and it needs to be 3 months after before my piping can restart in moderation to begin with.
Thanks!
Thank you once again for your generous support of my efforts, friend, I really appreciate it! 🙏
