Musicians are also a lot more business savvy for the most part. That's why the big labels are dying out one by one. There was an article written by a muso a while back talking about what actually happens with record labels signing on bands to ridiculous contracts where they wind up owning them lock, stock and barrel. To the extent that when the contract might end, they can't sign onto another label for years.
I miss groups like this so much. That said, it's good to know you don't need record labels or agents anymore. You just need to work hard and don't listen to anyone's empty promises....and if you do go with contracts...READ THEM THOROUGHLY.

It's so crazy how as a kid and teenager growing up, you think the music industry is so glamorous and exciting. You hear stories like this and know the industry is corrupt, but you see all the glamour and still think "well, the good still outweighs the bad", but as you get older and see what's really going on with a lot of these artists, even today, it's like damn, the music industry really is fucked up and corrupt.
There are some people who manage to transcend the industry in a sense or manage to maintain their popularity enough to see profit for themselves but there are far too many who fall off with little to show for it.
That's every industry though, it's just less life affecting when it's a day to day 9 to 5. Any industry which money is the main goal will be like this, creatives have it bad because it's not just 'showing up and working', it's putting your life on hold, selling your talents and music for someone else to give away based on what they think it's worth.

It's so crazy how as a kid and teenager growing up, you think the music industry is so glamorous and exciting. You hear stories like this and know the industry is corrupt, but you see all the glamour and still think "well, the good still outweighs the bad", but as you get older and see what's really going on with a lot of these artists, even today, it's like damn, the music industry really is fucked up and corrupt.
The whole entertainment industry. Film, T.V., music, stage, all of it.
There are some people who manage to transcend the industry in a sense or manage to maintain their popularity enough to see profit for themselves but there are far too many who fall off with little to show for it.
That's every industry though, it's just less life affecting when it's a day to day 9 to 5. Any industry which money is the main goal will be like this, creatives have it bad because it's not just 'showing up and working', it's putting your life on hold, selling your talents and music for someone else to give away based on what they think it's worth.

my mom was a singer that turned down one of these record deals and chose to stay indie and sing cabaret for a living. it always pissed me off as a kid, I couldve been the kid of a star! She told me often, and wisely, how sick the industry is and how she chose her freedom and happiness over it, but I never fully understood. Thanks for your wisdom mama.
