Joined my first ship in Liverpool and 2 others to follow ! never forgotten as a young man sailing out and around to London and off on voyage to New Zealand with a full cargo and number 2 hold filled with ammuntion for the NZ defence force. My first time home to Auckland having been away 3 years. Home is the sailor home from the sea said my Dad! 40 years in the RN/RNZN for Dad and 6 years of war included. Happy days at sea and we returned to Liverpool to pay off, the one and only time i paid off there a good run ashore in the city, the old docks will all be gone now but that is progress for you.

I guess either this trip wasn't good enough to show off even one aircraft on an aircraft carrier, on a special town visit , or maybe the UK only owns a very small number of F35s that have to be shared between the Royal Navy and the RAF, so little that we unfortunately don't have enough to even fully compliment one carrier without borrowing additional F35s from America. We have a great Navy, but if you don't have the tools to do the job, it'll just adds more controversy to the already damaged reputation of these beautiful carriers. You don't come into your own country's ports with the jets. They are away back to a naval air station . They probably will have a couple on board to show the visitors.

But we had room for a total of 900. 450 marines. All the aircraft mechanics and fitters move around with their squadrons. There not really part of the ships company.

The teeny weeny carriers were highly efficient and never let us down. If every thing drops into place these vessels are great, it has not happened yet.

So to say the "carriers were highly efficient and never let us down" when the first one had a failed GT on its way down South is a bit contradictory. The two QEs have also not let us down as one covers the other if necessary as was needed the once.

EMALS are still in testing and are currently very expensive. The only disadvantage of the F35B over the C variant is it can't take off with a full load when doing a short take off. The ski ramp negates that.

Currently the UK has received 34 F35s in total between the RAF and RN. Each of the two aircraft carriers support thirty-six F-35s and four helicopters, but with a theoretical surge capacity of up to 72 aircraft. So the RN is wasting tax payer money sailing the aircraft carriers when they cannot be staffed by a full complement of aircraft.
Training the ships crew is not time wasted. The air wing are doing their own work-up on the other carrier, as this one shakes down any mechanical snags before CSG25 next year. The theoretical capacity is exactly that, theoretical. Only the US ever deploy with that kind of air wing. It also doesn't take into account deck and hangar space being used for other aircraft or storage. The French, probably a good comparison to the UK in this regard, usually embark between 15-25 jets on actual ops, and less for training or exercises.
If they doubled the aircraft order and doubled the destroyers and frigates then two aircraft carriers would be sensible. At best we will have one with insufficient protection.
That's not even the worst of it. The RFA is a shambles and the RFA Fort Victoria - the only ship in the RFA capable of solid stores replenishment at sea - is permanently out of action. This ship can't sail without the US or some other navy providing solid stores support. The situation is nuts.
The most important question is whether this carrier is equipped with a full squadron of aircraft and if so, how many F-35Bs are aboard. AFAIK, only 33 have been delivered so far...
No one outside a small group in the navy higher ups and the government really knows the answer to that question. That information will always be kept secret. They don't want to advertise the aircraft carrier's capabilities to the enemies that are always watching and spying.
