      @@kkeller968 He may have been super fixated on fame in the original, but he always did what needed to be done. What made the character endearing was that despite all his attempts at finding glory, he gave it his all while taking a massive beating in the process. The slapstick helped ground the character and stopped him from becoming unlikeable, since he constantly had to struggle for his victories. Even then he was more often than not not recognised for his deeds by the general public and some his fellow hero colleagues. The original Darkwing never would have got the key to the city like this version did, at least not super early into the series, so you would root for him more because of that.
      That said, the rebooted version of Darkwing Duck is also really good in his own way. While I do prefer some elements from the original pilot that this episode reflects heavily, this to me is a near perfect reboot of the classic series. I was honestly surprised by how faithful they managed to be to the core of these characters while still making them different enough as to not become a rehash.

    If this was a backdoor pilot for a Darkwing Duck, and it most definitely was, then the one thing everyone needs to do is to watch the episode on the Disney XD youtube channel and to catch in on television. They put the entire episode on the Disney XD youtube channel for everyone to watch and we need to all watch it over and over again. Get the viewership numbers up and prove to Disney that people want to watch the show.

  • @wootmasterzorsx
    @wootmasterzorsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I never watched the original Darkwing Duck, and only got into Ducktales after high school watching it when cartoons being uploaded on TH-cam still happened, so I have been in this rebooted Ducktales with a fresh perspective on Darkwing. And I have loved the way they've done this new origin story for Darkwing Duck- it started out as a simple cameo that factors in to Launchpad's character focus episode. Then it evolved into an actual origin story for Drake Mallard. And now it's a crossover event that's every bit as important to the current Ducktales storyline as it is being the origin of how Drake and Gosalyn met. And I LOVE crossovers, so even with little knowledge of the old show, I have a big appreciation for that episode on that merit alone.
    And I love how the show uses both casts so well- Dewey already has experience with a missing parent, so offering to be the Webby in Gosalyn's situation is an amazing use of the crossover side of things as Dewey's already walked a mile in Gos' shoes and immediately sympathizes with her, offering his help in the situation. Scrooge, Huey and Louie uncovering the conspiracy of how this machine Bulba has ties in to the current arc, Bradford being a hilarious villain for being the only sane man in a world of over the top hammy villains, and Launchpad being an amazing emotional core to the group as he, Gosalyn, and Darkwing work to try stopping Bulba's plans. Even Fenton has a fun little role in the episode, being established as DW's tech guy and also being friends with him, while DW still keeps his one sided rivalry with Gizmoduck going.
    And that's just the Ducktales cast, as this show has amazingly reinvented Darkwing's cast, just as they did with Ducktales. Darkwing himself, from what little I've seen, is a much more likeable character here- he's got the same ego and need for a big reputation as the original character, but with a much stronger sense of justice and a more friendly demeanor as a whole. Gosalyn, well, I could be totally wrong, since I've only seen bits and pieces of the old show, but she seems to have been made more proactive and capable. Not that original Gosalyn wasn't like that, but this version has been turned up to eleven on that front. And Launchpad... he's still the new Ducktales Launchpad, but now we get more moments where he gets to show he's not just a bumbling comical character. They seamlessly have him switch from a ridiculous goofball who is trying to force a family dynamic on Drake, Gos, and himself by paralleling them to the McDuck family and offering actually sound emotional advice and offering a shoulder to cry on or inspiring people as they try stopping Bulba's plot.
    The only nitpick-y thing I have an issue with is, if this is a stealth pilot for a Darkwing Duck reboot (which would be awesome), it felt like sending the Fearsome Four back to their own world was one that would make things harder to have them in a potential reboot. Granted, Launchpad openly stated DW and him know a bunch of scientists who could crack interdimensional travel, so it wouldn't be hard to make a new portal that brings them back. Because I know they were integral characters to the old show they would need to be in a potential reboot. But still, that aside, it was a wonderfully fun episode and it just continues showing Season 3 is just amazing. I'm looking forward to where the story goes from here.

    Very good episode and great review. One thing that amuses me is the way F.O.W.L. has a hard time reigning in and focusing their loose cannons (Heron, Steelbeak and now Bulba). I haven’t really seen anyone talk about this but the idea that all pieces of fiction are really just windows into other dimensions was explored in the original Darkwing Duck. In the episode Twitching Channels Megavolt and DW are transported to our world where their life is a show! The reason their life is a show in that world is because the “writer” has a helmet that allows him to see their dimension. I thought that was a cool reference they made in the special.

    I've always thought Tad Stones' stance, that DuckTales and Darkwing Duck weren't really connected, was odd. In the very first episode of Darkwing Duck that Gizmoduck appears in, he also appears as Fenton, and Launchpad states when introducing Fenton to Drake: "We used to work for the same guy." Not to mention that Gizmoduck is repeatedly referred to throughout the series as the hero of Duckburg. It's obvious that events extremely similar to DuckTales have clearly taken place (if not just the actual events themselves as seen in DuckTales), so at that point, why say they're not connected?

    Honestly, I didn't like it very much. My issue here is that the relationship between this version of Darkwing and Gosalyn just didn't feel very satisfying. I know it's hard to measure up and all, but the father-daughter relationship between DW and Gosalyn in the original series was, at times at least, one of the most mindbogglingly wholesome things I've ever seen. The Pilot of the series especially did a very good job in setting up the dynamic and helping the audience fall in love with the characters. There were no complex subplots, and even the primary setup was fairly simple. But by keeping it simple, they gave themselves time to show Darkwing becoming a father, and it wasn't until that happened that he really became a heroic character.
    Let's Get Dangerous however really lets itself get bogged down in its subplots. It really does feel like the show didn't give the characters enough time to really develop in the way they're supposed to. Plus, if I'm being honest here, I really didn't agree with the direction they chose for the new Gosalyn. I get the impression here that they were terrified of the thought of just letting Gosalyn be a normal kid. I mean seriously, the new Gosalyn was easily more talented than Darkwing, and that undermined a lot of the shows attempts at establishing him as a parental figure.
    In short, it kinda ended up having a lot of the same flaws plaguing Duck Tales 2017 as a whole. The nostalgia is great, and there are some really clever or well written moments. But it kinda lets itself get undermined by busy overcomplicated setups or writing that tries a little too hard to be "modern year."
    But eh, I kinda knew I wasn't going to find something that recaptured the childhood magic of the original show. So I can't bring myself to actually get too upset on this front.

    It's in Disney's hands whether there will be a new Darkwing Duck series. This episode was the perfect setup for it. DuckTales producers seem to want it to happen, but Disney has to give the green
    green light. My guess is it will happen, but there's no guarantee. Covid has put a hurting on business so even though a new Darkwing Duck show has a ton of support Disney may pass on it or put it on the backburner.

    No mention of how Beetroot was a zombie because his voice actor died in 2017?
    Also, if I have a gripe about this episode, is that the DW villains don't do much and don't really act as characters. For some reason, they act like lackies to Bulba and while they have a line or two, you can definitely tell the VA's aged and weren't allowed to do much. Which is odd because Megavolt was an egocentric ass who could never team up for very long due to that ego. He always wanted to be the leader, call the shots and sabotage any team up efforts with his latest gadget.
    Also, Scrooge and the others were also sidelined pretty heavily. I get it, we can't have him solve the matter for Darkwing but, I kind of feel like they resorted to dumbing down the heroes so that the cameo character can shine. They didn't technically do that, the characters are still smart and I loved how Scrooge believed in Huey when classic Scrooge wouldn't have, but he does feel leashed.
    Also, where the fuck is our universe's Negaduck???? This seemed like the best episode for him to show up and act as a twist Villain but he's not even referenced in this episode. 😿

    While I really loved the episode, I'm not sure how I feel about Goselynn. I always thought that the new Webby drew inspiration from the original Goselynn (the super competent and enthusiastic athlete vibe). The problem now with new Goselynn is that she feels like a fusion between Webby and Lena. We already have a super competent athlete and a more moody character, so she doesn't feel that new to me. Hopefully if she shows up more, we'll get to see more of her personality than just her reasonable emotions about her grandfather. Don't get me wrong, she's very sympathetic and I very much want to like her, but she doesn't feel distinct. And in a show that's full of diverse and distinct characters, I think this shows more prominently with her. Maybe that's just me.

    Overall I was impressed by this special in terms of handling all the characters and their various dynamics. That said it fell slightly short of being what I wanted and the reason is one world, Goslin.
    To say that the heart of the original Darkwing Duck show was the loving familial bond between Drake/Darkwing and Goslin would be an understatement. Before watching this special I re-watched the original pilot form the old show, Darkly Dawns the Duck (also watching the opening scene on youtube that was cur from the syndicated version and the idiots at Disney left out of the DVD release) so I could make a comparison.
    The first issue I have is that the writers of the new show decided to make Goslin around the same age as the triplets. which given the amount of time that has passed since the start of the reboot would put them between 11 and 12 while the original Goslin was 9. I understand the motivation for that, as they wanted the character to be more independent and pro-active without her coming across as precocious. The problem is by making her older she more emotionally mature and independent and so is not going to form the deeper kind of emotional bound the original Goslin did. This is further aggravated by her Grandfather not not being dead like in the original with a vague possibility of finding him one day which will also act as a break on her developing family relationship with DW with him at most being more like a Foster parent than them developing a real farther daughter relationship.
    The season issue is personality, the new Goslin, to me, felt kinda bland without much opptunity for a defined personality to come across. Again, contrast with the original and it's almost shocking just how layered a character she came across as in the old pilot. Not to mention the original Goslin's dry, sarcastic, lines are in my view the source of the best comedic moments in the pilot given how much of the over the top slapstick fall flat for me (no pun intended. ;P ) In the new shows defense they had a LOT to cram into this special so I'm open to seeing Goslin show more of a personality in a potential spin off.
    Still a great special I really enjoyed, a solid 8/10, but it was noticeable how, for a show that took fairly one-dimensional characters from the 80's Ducktales show and fleshed them out, it seemed to me that the opposite took place with regards to Goslin.

    • @Frozen_Death_Knight
      @Frozen_Death_Knight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @ArtsyDucks It's a smart business move in this day and age. Nowadays it will be hard to get the attention from kids if it isn't easily accessible on popular platforms, which is at the end of the day Disney's target demographic here. Kids do not actively tune in to watch shows on TV like the kids born before the early 2000s, so if you want to reach out to the newer generations you need to be where they like to spend their time; i.e. TH-cam.
      I think there are multiple factors as to why this episode got this treatment besides it being a backdoor pilot for a new Darkwing Duck show:
      1) DuckTales 2017 is old news by now (it's already been 3 years since it launched). If they want more people interested in DuckTales again Disney need to promote it.
      2) This episode has significantly more effort put into it than the other ones, so if you want to promote the show, you had better put your best foot forward.
      3) Since this episode also functions as a progression of the overall season 3 story arc, it is a way to get people invested before the finale, thus boosting the overall viewer numbers before that finale arrives.
      4) The reboot is very obviously trying to establish an expanded universe version of their old properties to replicate the success of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. If DuckTales is successful, then it stands to reason that Darkwing Duck as well as other Disney Afternoon franchises can get rebooted successfully. More shows -> more viewers -> more money in the long run.
      I hope the episode becomes a smash hit, since the people behind the reboot have honestly done a really good job at making DuckTales 2017 a worthy successor to the 80s series. Can't wait for more. :)

    To be honest, this episode make me realise, that Jim's Darkwing Duck show must been a lot more action oriented, and I dere to say without a heart that make me enjoy it. Sice a lot of it comes from original Drake personality and relations with his daughter and LP. Even his beakerings with neighbors, fact that Megawolt was his old classmate, or how he was jealous of Gizmoduck.

      Yeah, in retrospective it might not have been that good and a little generic if it's just 100% Darkwing superhero antics. Having a lead actor who insists on doing his own stunts and refuses to do second takes might have hurt the show's quality too.

      At the end of this episode, Gizmoduck fights off, and clears the roads of the giant vines, and the people chant "Gizmoduck just saved St. Canard!" That's probably going to sow the seeds for Darkwing's rivalry later on.
