  • Operating portable with the Wolf River TIA Coil system. A brief setup video of how I configured the antenna. Hopefully, this is helpful to other operators using this antenna for initial setup.
Here is Wolf River's website where more information can be gleaned about the TIA:
    www.wolfrivercoils.com/TIA.html
Here is a review of the Wolf River Silver Bullet 1000 coil from the July 2017 edition of QST magazine (reviewed by KB1HQS):
    www.wolfrivercoils.com/images...
The kit includes: Wolf River Silver Bullet 1000 coil, telescoping whip (102" fully extended), machined base with SO-239 connector, (3) aluminum support legs w/ jamb-nuts, (3) radials x 33' long ea.

I see this setup on TH-cam by a lot of operators. I think I will get this for my portable rig over an end fed or dipole setup for ease of setup and range or bands. Thanks for sharing. I will bookmark this. You helped me with my FTM-100DR get setup on Wires-X PDN mode. I got into this late in life. I started last March with Tech and now Extra here this month. I enjoy your videos. Very informative!

Excellent Information and Good video. I've got several TIA Wolf Ridge antennas; One in my portable case. I work a lot of VERY remote sites in Alaska and have been quite pleased with its portability and construction quality. I've had one SB 1000 sitting outside for 2 years and even at minus 40F (-40F) temperatures, it still works well. Dan KL1JP

I’ve tried a number of different whips with mixed results. I prefer the longer whip, I have the 213” whip and I have a Buddipole 17+’ shock cord whip. Both of these are resonant without any coil on 20m and higher. I use camping clothesline spools for the radials and have marked each radial with colored tape per band so that I can get a 1:1 match & a 50 Ohm feedpoint. I add the small coil to pick up 30m and 40m, I’ve not tried 80m yet, with the big coil, but that is my plan for camping, when the campsite allows, to have an 80m setup.
I bought the mega feet and the small feet for the tripod. So far I have only used the mega feet. Those large whips need a little guying or a bit of weight in the base to keep from toppling over in the wind (luckily I have a tree in my front yard where I’ve been testing these to catch the antenna when it starts to fall over).
I have Buddipole 66” and 114” whips as well that I intend to try for a more portable setup and more flexible in that I would need to keep at least the small coil on for the higher bands . I keep getting distracted by the larger whips though.
Our camping season starts this coming weekend (I will ignore winter camping up here as I’m not bringing a radio in the snow).
    Thanks for posting.

Found these measurements for 102" whip measured from the bottom. Using a 102 inch whip
1 clicks from the bottom 3.550 Blue
10 clicks from the bottom 3.753
20 clicks from the bottom 3975
56 clicks from the bottom 5.300
83 clicks from the bottom 7.187
97 clicks from the bottom 10.100
106 clicks from the bottom 14.280
110 clicks from the bottom 18.100
To receive 12 and 10 meters use a shorter whip.

Hello, Gray. I know you posted this a couple years ago, but I am a new General-licensed ham and purchased the WRC 1000 Platinum. I am having a terrible time getting my new Yaesu FT-710 to work with the antenna. I have mostly tried the 20M band working “portable” with a battery in my backyard. I have Parkinson’s Disease so the whole bonding/grounding issue is just too much for my brain right now. When you say the measurements for the 102 inch whip are from the bottom, do you mean from the bottom of the coil? I am currently getting nothing but static on 20M with an SWR measured at 1.7:1. Thanks for any advice you can give me!! Jim in Oregon

Nice video. I have the SOTA model. Instead of measuring I just count the “clicks” as the collar moves. I have a chart that tells me how many clicks up for each band. I find that very useful when operating at night where it’s hard to measure or see sharpie lines.

I am sure you know that IF YOU REMOVE THE LOADING COIL, you can work 6m and 10m by merely shortening the whip to approx 4'4" and 8'2.5" respectively. The will be no coil loss either. If you happen to have the center loading extension rods you can create a vertical antenna uo to approx four feet longer or 12' 6" long. With that, you can go as low as the 15m band with the coil.

Do you have issues with tuning the coil and by touching the plastic collar SWR goes all over the place. I am assuming it’s a grounding issue and i need more radials?

    • @GhostRider1974
      @GhostRider1974  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have not had any issues with that. I have noticed at times that the radials can become loose on the attachment at the legs. Also, check that the plastic set screw is holding the tap collar firmly in place. If you are near the antenna while tuning, your proximity may affect the SWR as well.

The FT-891 is compact / portable, has a detachable face, and has a more advanced filtering and digital noise reduction; however, the FT-891 is much more menu-driven. That is the one thing I haven’t done, is use a tuner with this. I’ve been tweaking the radials and the tap for resonance. It looks like you are using the full 33’ of radials and not adjusting them at all as you move through the bands. I am going to try one of my smaller whips and do what you are doing here. Your approach at measurements and positioning appear to be way more predictable and repeatable than mine. I just built a Hardrock 50 with an ATU for my KX2, I won’t be without a tuner in the field this year.
