- Before we fertilize and mow the grass in the Spring there are a few things we need to do to get a jump start on the Spring lawn care season. In this video I explain some of the most important things that can and should be done just as Spring is starting and just as our lawns are waking up from winter dormancy.
This is a summary of the early spring lawn chores that apply to most all grass types all across the country in both the south and the north, both warm season and cold season grasses. This is also an introduction to my full length Spring Lawn Care guide which can be found here on this TH-cam channel.

I really enjoy you info. 79, trying to get yard back in shape. Have not been able to take care of it to broken bones for last 5 years, then small miny stroke and even had shots got covid in hospital, silver lining cancer was found so had radiation. Now after these 5 years trying to get in shape. Big companies that spray yards are NOT ADDRESSING WEEDS IN EARLY SPRING. I AM SO DISCUSSTED. What to do what I can and guy that cut my yard said he would help put down what I need. NOW I just need to know what to buy and how to use. Thank you so much
We used to burn our lawn in South Carolina in the spring (garden hose in hand) and within a few weeks it would come back super green.
Your videos are very educational. Greatly appreciate the time you put into putting out this type of content. 👍🏻
Thanks so much for the feedback SuperTA! I'm glad to hear so many people like this style of content. 😀
Thank you. I love how clear and straight forward are your videos.
Great tips, I like that your going over it as it is coming up in the season
Thanks Nathan! I try my best to stay just slightly ahead of the season for my viewers if at all possible.
Thanks bro keep it going. This has helped me so much.
You are most welcome Chalandon; make sure to let me know how everything is progressing later in the season!
Thank you for your tips!!!
Your welcome Jarrod! Hope you have a great lawn season!
Impressive experience ,Thanks for your ideas, people will have a beautiful lawn full of green accordingly, I like you video.

Excellent content Brian....the beginning of a spring lawn season coincides with the start of Major League Baseball 💪⚾️
Gotta love that Vazz! I've started dipping my toes into spring training but I have to give a much closer look over the next couple weeks as rosters start finalizing.
flap discs are best for blade sharpening in my opinion.
I do typically use my angle grinder but I'm very curious about the blade sharpening drill attachments. Important thing is to get it done though, all methods are better than doing nothing. 😅
@@TurfMechanic I could do a whole series on sharpening things. There really is a technic to it. But, I'll share a few tips regarding mower blades or any edge for that matter. Make sure when you are grinding that the wheel is moving towards the edge and not away from it. The reason being is towards it draws cool air towards the edge. Away from draws heat to the edge. When the edge gets hot it loses tempering. Hence will not stay sharp. The other thing is the best way to sharpen is off the mower because when you remove material from grinding it changes the balance of the blade. Sharpen and then hang the blade from the center hole with a nail in a board to check balance. Grind more material from the side that drops until balance is achieved. 🙂
Do you recommend germinating seeds, soaking for a few (5-7) days, in lower Fairfield county Connecticut ? Will have to mix the damp germinated soil with dry ingredients...use Peat moss? Fertilizer? Please advise.
I have a very bumpy, un-level side lawn as had to dig up yard to install water draining Cultech systems. So, will order about 20 yards of topsoil...I have about 5500 square feet of lawn/yard area that I will resoil and reseed.
Further, any need to mix in sand? Lots of rocks, both big and small, in yard....Connecticut tings' 😊 Thanks.
Thank you for all your unique and intriguing lawn/soil information you provide us. My question is regarding Azomite . Its texture is similar to flower, making it tricky to use in spreader. Do you think I could mix it with other soil conditioners in the spreader ? Is Azomite water soluble, because I do use a battery powered sprayer for numerous types of applications especially bio stimulants. Thank you Brian
I have always used the granualized azomite, like teeny tiny pebbles. It's more easily found as a powder but you are right it isn't as easily spreadable. It's not water soluble so id recommend either mixing with a dampened carrier or just finding a granualized version. Down to earth brand has a granualized version I've used before but there are probably more options if you look for them.
The Azomite topic in my schedule will be a one and done application that can’t hurt anything of course. I’m a true believer in that a healthy soil means a healthier lawn for the most part. I spray products like humic 12, air 8, and RGS among others in the early spring ( no nitrogen yet) and water them in if rain isn’t in the immediate future during early spring. I’m in central Maryland and wondering if I should wait until June to reapply or a little earlier. Just applied these today and got a little over half an inch of rain.
@@brianchristman5808 yeah azomite is a one and done product, best applied after aeration to get more of it below the soil surface but good enough any time. It's purpose is to make sure your lawn has at least some of all the trace elements that you can't just buy from a store shelf. These things are needed in such low quantities that you don't need to do this often, just once every couple years or so is easily enough. As for the humic air8, rgs, you should be find waiting until June. With RGS I might suggest something closer to May while Spring weather is still dominant but no big deal if you wait longer.
Beautiful place 👈
Thanks Gary; we loved it when we saw it for the first time and we're thankful to be here.
Hello, what area is this?
Thank you you too 💗
I really enjoy you videos. Pure information; no infomercials. What about applying a pre-emergent?
Thanks Alpha! I made a few vids about pre-emergent last year, haven't made updates yet. Long story short its when soil temps get to 55 or around 50 when your forecast shows a sunny warm stretch for the week to come. That's usually in late Feb for the southern states, mid March for transition zone, and late March to early April for colder states. Some isolated cold places may be mid to late april.. ill make more vids on this later in the season but you can see this video of mine for more context: th-cam.com/video/_IkO5jXk7i0/w-d-xo.html
@@TurfMechanic Thanks for the follow up. Also, I live in the transition zone. Yesterday, I stuck my meat thermometer in the ground on the side of the house with the southern exposure - 42 degrees F. So Mid-March sounds about right.
Hi Brian. Have you ever done a series on how to install an irrigation system? Watering with hoses is really a PITA!
I have not and probably won't. Was thinking about maybe doing an above ground setup series this year but I may not get to it.
Yeah I ran tests on my irrigation last season and found same, not all zones were equal.
It's pretty amazing how different they all can be. A while back I just assumed my zones were only slightly different but man, zone 2 needs almost three times the run time as zone 3, thats a huge discrepancy!
I totally agree w u about when we aerate/scarify, it breaks our pre emerg barrier. My question is can we apply another light coat of Coastal even if we’ve exhausted our annual rate?
Coastal is a blend of herbicides, about 40% of it is prodiamine so if you've already used the annual rate of prodiamine then you probably shouldn't apply it. Assuming your warm season grass type you could look to add Tenacity but probably not if you have a St Aug or Bermuda lawn.
Thak you very much for sharing this video.
You are most welcome Rosanna!
You mention to start cutting the small tufts that are coming up. For me, this is a new lawn. Should I bag or mulch? Thanks 😊
Mulching grass returns 20-40% of a lawns nitrogen requirements back to the soil in a growing season. You should Mulch always unless you have overgrown grass that will kill your lawn
@@DerekMichaelAnderson Thanks!
Great video! My yard is about 60 - 70% light green with brown still (zoysia). Is it too late to aerate?
Thanks Spencer! I say do it, it's just about the best and most healthy thing you can do for your lawn. Take it next level by doing a deep dethatch by June 1 and you will be loving your yard this summer 😁
@@TurfMechanic Thank you so much for that help! I was thinking of dethatching it as well, so I'm glad you mentioned it. If I have too much thatch in part of my lawn already should I do that before I aerate or just aerate and then dethatch later like you suggested originally. Parts of my yard are super spongy while parts of it are thinning out. Again thanks for the help and the quality content you have been posting. I'm learning a ton from your vids as this is my first year taking on my lawn - new home owner ya!
I had those sprinkler head they look nice but they don't cover a lot, i switch to rain Bird 32sa sprinkler heads you'll end up watering less.
Thanks for the tip; I'll give those a look before I swap out heads. I may stick with what I have though because so many of mine are performing just fine - shorter watering times would be nice though...
@@TurfMechanicunderstandable, well if one of your sprinkler heads ain't covering a good area maybe try one of them see how it works just a thought.
You are probably right, I do like testing things out. 😆
Great Video! Thank you! I would like to put down GrubEx1, Tenacity, the humid acid and micronutrients. Could you tell me what order i should put these down and how long I should wait between applications. I'm going to be doing a dethatching prior to putting anything down. Thanks!
I see no problem putting Tenacity, Humic, and Micros down on the same day. It can be beneficial to have humic down a week or so before the micros but it's not necessary. As for GrubEx, wait on that until end of Spring, Mid-May through end of June is best. I'll be applying probably around June 10-15 or so. Make sure to apply granulars before liquids if that's relevant to your situation.
Bought a house 6 months ago. Still don’t know what type of grass I have! Need to find out fast to be able to treat it properly
You can narrow it down quite a bit by location and color you are seeing now. Grey green dormant color indicates a cool season grass type right now, full brown in a transition zone or warm season zone really points toward warm season grass. Width of blade can narrow it down further when in dormant grass.
Is it wrong to aerate Bermuda during dormancy?
I don't think it's wrong...just not the best time. If it were me I'd wait until at least after your seasonal scalp and do it just days before applying pre-emergent. Bermuda should start greening in mid-to upper 50 soil temps as they start pushing towards 60. That's a good time to scalp and apply PE, it's hard to get it all perfect though since so many things start happening to a Bermuda lawn at 55 degree soil temps all at the same time.
Hi Brian, members of the fb group 'Lawn Care Ontario' would love to have you on a ZOOM Q&A meeting. Would you be willing and able?
Hey David, thanks for the invite. I'm intrigued but the timing would have to be spot on, I got four kids here at the house I have to work around. Also you should know I'm not a huge expert on the warm season grass types of Ontario - getting closer but im still learning every day. Ill join the group so we can connect at least.
@@TurfMechanic there’s many aspects of Lawn care than just the grass itself. Ie equipment, weed and insect control, watering etc. Your knowledge would greatly benefit our group. We can set it up Monday night 8pm Eastern standard time.
I would be unavailable at the time but later in the week (Friday) might work for me. I sent a group join request for your group. Maybe we can chat more about it there.

Need a job
💪I awoke this morning thinking that I will take care of my lawn. And then I saw this. 🫣 Now I will call a professional. All the can-do-it-ness in me has been wiped out completely. 😅 There goes my money 🤦🏻♀️
