    During this tour she was in my country (Italy) but I couldn't go and listen to her. Unfortunately for me it will remain a dream to be able to see her live because she is not well now. She is amazing! Thank you Tom for post this concert and thank you Joni for your music!
    ps: in this tour there were also incredible musicians like Michael Landau and Vinnie Colaiuta that I was able to see live with other artists instead.

    This should be out of the Wild Things Run Fast tour. Superb album imho with a warm and well detailed sound all over to pair the high quality and very inspired songwriting. Live rendering is outstanding. Truly a live gem. Thanks for posting it.

      I saw her when she toured Wild Things Run Fast, so I guess I saw a version of this show in the Chicago market. It was my first concert so I had nothing to compare it to but since then I can say that she outperformed greats like INXS, Metallica, NIN, etc and Joni hardly even did anything compared to what all the megabands bring with them for theatrics, she just switched instruments a lot, let her fabulous band support her, smoked constantly, and sang like WOW--that's it and she smoked damn near everyone I've seen or at least has held her own. Like Aretha Franklin, so much is lost to recording, you just can't get Joni on an album. After all these years, Joni has remained in my Top 3 best concerts with her performance of "Case of You" being the 2nd best & most outstanding hearing of a tune ever... Cold Play blew her doors off with their performance of "Lost" at an indoor stadium in Des Moines that was so amazing I very nearly drove to Omaha the next day to hear it again (it doesn't sound the same outdoors) & INXS comes in at #3 with an encore: "Never Tear Us Apart" on the Kick tour & Michael Hutchins did a strip tease. Just because Joni didn't come on so strong like others do doesn't mean you didn't leave her concerts all mangled & beat up because she really put you through something, stronger than the rest. People throw roses on her stage during the encores & I've never seen another artist receive bouquets of flowers like that.

    Thank you Tina Tika for mentioning that someone said that her voice was already changing because of her smoking. I commented on one of these posts that in addition to cigarettes changing her voice, it has taken a toll on her face causing tremendous aging and wrinkles. In response, I was ruthlessly attacked by people on facebook saying I was rude and judgemental, when I was just sharing observations. I actually had to block these assholes, who did not even know that I am a huge fan of Joni's, and have been since the late 60's. She is a musical genius and master songwriter, who in her youth and midlife remained beautiful! What is wrong with people who cannot handle other people's perceptions and opinions? They feel compelled to attack people who differ from their opinions.

      I wasn't there unfortunately but, like you, the words and music did and do mean so much to me. I discovered Joni when a DJ, "Fluff Freeman", played the whole of the first side of Don Juan's Reckless Daughter on the radio. I was smitten. I saw her live once in London in the mid Eighties. I would have been about 15 when I discovered Joni. Still one of my favourite artists and I'm about to turn 55.

    Thank you so much for sharing this rare glimpse of Joni in concert. She does a lot of ad libbing. Someone mentioned her voice was already changing due to her smoking. I believe she's got a sore throat or a cold this night. I'm noticing where she's not doing the songs exactly like the recordings. Still fantastic and she gets warmed up as the show progresses.

      I was present at this concert in The Hague. Joni herself was at her best, but I think it's a pity that you critisize Jaco the Great. Look at the live recordings on 'Shadows and Light'. Together with Pat Matheny, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Lyle Mays and ofcourse Joni these are to me the greatest live recordings ever. Larry Klein was just a jerky bass player.

    My response to hearing this era of Joni is so different that 99% of you. To me this band is turning Joni's music into easy-listening mush. I saw the 79 tour (which was adventurous, exciting, challenging) and can appreciate that this band had big shoes to fill. But these guys, like the LA Express live, were expert, skilled... and unexciting and bland. It was all Joni's choice, which she showed on her albums in the 80s and 90s- the guitar/voice/words cores of those songs are edgy, exciting and singular- then she chose arrangements that smoothed most of that out (and with those synths and processed guitar, dated them badly). That vented, glad this music makes so many people happy. I love Joni too, since forever. Just my opinion.

    • @daveenpeterus9481
      @daveenpeterus9481 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have loved Joni from way back, and I was ALL ready to disagree with you, but after listening to the whole thing, I agree with your assessment of its blandness. I'm a huge fan of Mingus, The Hissing of Summer Lawns (which was supposedly a favorite of Prince) and Hejira, but this seems rather programmed and slick. Still very good stuff compared to a lot music from that era, to be sure.

    • @tuskedbeast
      @tuskedbeast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daveenpeterus9481 Thank you. Was just looking for someone else who felt the same way, in contrast to all this rapturous praise. By the way, those are my three favorite LPs of hers too. I've bought (and "lived") her LPs as they came out from Court and Spark on and loved her radical changes up until Wild Things, when IMO she started sort of screwing up her own stuff. She's a GODDESS to me... but not infallible.

    • @daveenpeterus9481
      @daveenpeterus9481 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tuskedbeast Absolutely - I never saw anything wrong with an honest critique of someone's work, even if they're as great as Joni. In a way, it yields some contrast to her many very good records (and the excellent ones). She's human! Or maybe not her, but the band and the arrangement of this particular record (which barely sounds live, except for JM having a scratchy throat and vamping her way through it, which is interesting on its own). The reason I love Summer Lawns and Mingus so much is that they're not just throw-away stuff that sounds like a bored house band. Thanks for your response and greetings from Colorado.

    • @davexxx5175
      @davexxx5175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daveenpeterus9481 - I remember when she released her album "wild things run fast" I read in an interview that she said (more or less like this): "It's an easy record, it doesn't take long to understand it!"
      What can I say is that I love Joni from the beginning. if I think to "For the Roses", "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" (two albums that I love) or, of course, "Mingus" .. yes this is Joni in the 70's and she did amazing things but I wouldn't give up throwing away what she did in the 80s and 90s. For example "wild things run fast" is a great record with great arrangements and musicians.. let's say it's another.. nice side of Joni.
      "Night ride home" is a amazing record (for example).
      ps: remember that many famous artists at the time (and not only) were also pressured by record companies to make more "commercial" records and this is a reality.

      I think Joni's singing is fabulous here, but I'm in agreement with Robert MacMoneagle. He's not talking about her timing, her pitch, her ability to tell a story, etc.. He's talking about the musical equipment of her voice itself. Her throat and lungs sound like they're starting to getting a bit roughed up and showing signs of fraying. It's endearing in a way, kind of like the way John Lennon's voice sounded in the Beatles' original studio recording of "Twist and Shout" because he was sick and had ripped up his vocal chords after numerous takes. Or Tom Wait's' voice in general. But this recording of Joni does portend in what direction her voice was heading. And I'm an old admirer of Joni, I started out with Nathan LaFraneer back in '69 and kept up with her ever since. She helped me get through some tough times back in the 70s.
