Anything closer and you will want something that can take its time, albeit still at a distance, like an Assault Helicopter
can we please get rid of the A-10 shitting Hippo? why the A-10 was obsolete years ago: the gun is incredibly inaccurate, with only 80% of bullets getting within 30 meters of the target, not a good thing when you are firing very close to friendly units. It also can't penetrate the armor of the T-72, T-90, and T-14 tanks its "tankiness" is not able to stand up to AA guns built after the 80s-90s, and isn't fast or stealthy enough to avoid MANPADs, which deal more than enough damage to take out an A-10 Its situational awareness is literally just binoculars. No radar, no IFF system, and minimal communication equipment this has led to the A-10 being the uncontested king of friendly fire incidences, famously accidentally ripping apart a group of (allied) british APCs Its no wonder that Ukraine is refusing to take our A-10s
Your points are straight booty and misleading. You cannot possibly be over the age of 13. 80% of the "bullets" (explosive projectiles) land in a 12 meter circle of dispersion @ 1200m. 30 meters of dispersion was at 1.86 MILES away. ITS MAX RANGE. That is nothing short of exceptionally precise for a flying *rotary* cannon. You cannot claim it is "incredibly inaccurate". That is false, objectively speaking. Even in comparison to other rotary cannons it is incredibly *accurate* . Or are you expecting the pilot to get headshots with explosive ammunition from three kilometers away? Any AAA from the last 100 years could shoot it down. It only goes 400mph. Nobody was expecting it to dodge flak. Nobody was expecting it to dodge missiles. ITS CAS. It does have electronic countermeasures. That armor is solely for the purpose of protection against small arms and gun emplacements before it can, you know, drop a laser guided bomb on it (which it did, quite literally thousands of times). The T72 has 60mm of top and rear armor. The depleted uranium penetrator can, indeed, penetrate that much armor @ 500m. No, you don't know how much armor the T-90 or T-14 Armata has, this is not a WarThunder forum, and it has ERA on it anyway. That and, you're *completely* ignoring the fact it has missiles and laser guided bombs that, as missiles and bombs normally do, would turn any tank on the planet into a very large sparkler. It has the IFFCC that does the same thing as the IFF and a lot more. Almost like the thing that shoots, and drops bombs, unguided for many years until the 2000s, the closest to allied troops might just have the highest risk of friendy fire incidents? Nah, that would make too much sense. The A-10 has more than its fair share of problems that make it bad, and you managed to miss all of them.
A few years ago I was home alone doing homework when the house started shaking and I heard a loud rumble. I quickly went to the window to see see an A10 flying over probably as low as it legally could. Damn that was impressive. It’s something u can never forget. What an awesome aircraft 😎
Hate to break it to you, but more often than not, history is _not_ written by the victors, and sometimes even the vanquished or outdated get more editorial authority than they deserve- LazerPig's A10/Pierre Sprey videos, and Potential History's videos on post-Nazi military narratives can better elaborate. The point is, what was useful in the distant past is not nearly so useful now. The Avenger gun is not the best asset in a 'danger close' CAS situation- with a 'splash zone' measured in tens of meters, as LazerPig put it, 'a little touch on the stick could be the difference between a medal, a court martial, or a war crime' to paraphrase. And the 'conventional' wisdom of what makes an aircraft useful in supporting ground troops (low, slow, armored) have more to do with _lacking_ situational awareness than anything else- i.e. before Radar, advanced optics and infrared. Now, we have technology that keeps an aircraft far away from ground based anti-air threats and still precisely target and kill enemies, especially armor, while (hopefully) avoiding collateral damage. The alternative (A10) method is spray and pray by comparison. And even if an A10 is 'durable' by today's standards, even without being shot down, it may still be 'down' for repair, and that's when it's not supporting the troops' front. More of our military doctrine is based around avoiding getting shot at in the first place.' That's not even accounting for the potential 'inflation' of combat effectiveness for lack of awareness and because 'military reformists' want some media attention for being contrarian- that's beyond my purview.
Thank you! Everybody want to go crazy and worship the A-10. It was made in the 70s. I was in Jr. High in Killeen and used to see them over town all the time. I loved them then. I like it now. It is time for a new CAS bird. A 50 year old bird is not the answer. And do we need a flying 30mm gun? Again LOVED it back in 79 when I was 14, do we need it now?
As an A-10 support personnel, your rate of fire is technically correct but never used in combat at that rate. Concerning depleted uranium, It takes a massive amount of rounds stacked together to even consider a radiation placard to be displayed. Drones cannot strafe a convoy, A-10's can. Drones do not suppress troop movements, A-10's can. Drones are snipers, A-10 can snipe and inflict mass damage/casualties.
Thanks for these clarifications. I had always wondered about the way the GAU-8 actually consumed ammunition. An adjustable rate of fire is a perfect way to take advantage of this capability.
During the Desert Storm period, more tanks were destroyed by the FB-111 Aardvark then there were by the A-10. However, due to the method used to count the tanks and other vehicles destroyed vs the number of missions flown, the "bean counters" gave the nod to the A-10. This ended up well for the A-10, and, of course, the FB-111 has been completely withdrawn from active service all around the world, (with Australia fielding the last ones). Now, they're talking about putting new wings on the existing frames to give them longer life in the field. Everyone loves the "B-R-R-R-R-T-T".
Now I love the A-10, but I can't ignore some of its shortcomings in modern combat. The Warthog is spectacular at tank busting - circa 1975. In 2022 the landscape of the battlefield has changed quite a bit. We've moved on from armored advances across rural fields to close quarters urban combat, and the A-10 just isn't as effective in said role. Let's start off with what everybody knows about the warthog: the gun. The GAU-8 30mm rotary cannon is a powerful tank buster, but its main shortcoming is its accuracy. In combat you might not have time to line up a shot because every enemy in the area will be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you. So the GAU-8 is designed to pepper an area the size of a football field with several dozen rounds and hope you land enough on target to knock it out. In urban combat, the collateral from that level of inaccuracy is, frankly, unacceptable. Another thing is the famed durability. Most people don't realize that the all the redundancies and protection is so that the pilot can get back behind friendly lines if and when taking a critical hit, not to sit above the battlefield and absorb hits from every artillery piece they chuck at you like a tank. The final thing is after forty years of service, new technologies have come out that render the warthog outmatched. Newer radars can track low flying targets much easier. Man-portable SAMs are a lot more common. AA artillery has gotten bigger and more accurate. The 2K22 Tunguska was literally designed to counter the A-10 Warthog! I blame the media for all the hype around this aircraft. But the hard truth is since the mid-2000s, practically every confirmed tank, bunker, and facility kill the A-10 has it got with guided munitions. Even in rural combat precision weapons have shown to be more effective than the gun. Now don't take this the wrong way. The A-10 is my favorite combat plane of all time, but it's because I love it so much that I go hard on it. Sometimes tough love is the most sincere. I could continue on this rant for a while, but I know none of you want to spend three hours reading an overly detailed and long-winded TH-cam comment. (But if you do I'd recommend Laserpig's videos; we agree on many of the same points.)
The gun was tested against outdated tanks from the late 50s back when it was being introduced and out of ten tanks managed one hard kill and three tanks damaged. All four tanks would have been brought back to full service in under a day. Consequently, because of that test, there has never been an A-10 sold to foreign customers, despite plenty of effort and pressure in the 80s.
I've loved the A10 for many years, since the early 90s when I had posters of it on my walls as a kid, and made airfix models of it. I guess I've always loved the ugly duckling, but I didn't fully appreciate the amazing engineering of this legend until I did my engineering degree, and more recently, started to play DCS. It's totally renewed my love of this beast, so hard to kill it. It is literally "the flying tank". The designers deserve to go down in history. If only there was an updated version, more powerful efficient engines, greater wing lift with lower drag, etc, besides the obvious avionics upgrades, this design would live a long, long life.
Ehhh . . .not really It's useless in a modern peer to peer engagement, and the invasion of Ukraine is why low flying aircraft are easy pickings The most we might see of it is flying counter insurgency operations in low threat areas
@@jurajsintaj6644 the A-10 is pretty much a third gen plane with no purpose for nowadays' warfare, basically, it is a plane designed for a era when compact AA radar missiles and other anti-aircraft weren't as advanced as they are nowadays, meaning they would rely on th gunner'a more than anything. In today's warfare, that thing could be picked up by a radar and get shredded by missile kilometers away from it, denying its only purpose as a CAS aircraft.
The A-10 is so overrated that its actually sad... (Also I don't hate the aircraft and I think it does well at its job, I just hate that it gets more credit than it actually deserves.)
During one of my trips to Polk for JRTC my squad was getting picked apart by an A10. One of the rules of the game was the ability to call in the OCs ( think referee for those who have never played US Army laser tag) for a silent kill. If you could show the means to preform a kill and describe step by step how you would do it you got the kill and the OC would pull out the god gun. We were pinned down in a ditch in the middle of a field in the middle of the woods. The field was full of the largest murder of crows I have ever seen. I called in my OC and told him I wanted a silent kill of the A10. I told him I would wait until the next pass of the plane. He was flying a tree top height and had no direct sight until he cleared the edges of the woods. When I knew he was committed to the run I would run out into the field dumping my full belt of 249 into the murder ( for those who see the irony I swear I’m not making it up) It would scare the birds up into his flight path. There is ample proof of birds bringing down planes. Thousands of them will bring down an A10 at 30 feet. The OC refused to give me the kill. When asked why he told me that no A10 pilot would ever believe that he was brought down by a bird. As he walked away I heard him call off the pilot for the rest of the day. I should have been giving the credit for my kill.
@@moonmonster3d they told us we were blue 4. We were supporting a MASH unit in the box. We (458EnBn) on one side of the field and the MASH on the other. And a couple hundred yards of no mans land in the middle.
What would you use that cannon for? Tanks? It cant even pen them. There are much more efficient ways to equip a UAV with weapons both against armored and unarmored targets.
That's a waste of time. The GAU-8 is already outdated and frankly quite useless for its role nowadays, it is imprecise, heavy and relies on a suicidal tactic to work, equipping an UAV with such a weapon would just make it inefficient on its job.
The gau 8 is dead Weight, they should probably just replace it with a 20mm just as effective and less heavy. There is no reason to do that now since the f35 is going to replace it anyways
I live in Delaware, A-10s fly over my house all the time. When I see and hear one coming it gives me a great feeling of excitement, like a 10 year old. back in the 90's my dad took me on a canoe trip in alaska. I was maybe 14, I really don't remember what year. Anyway, we were out in the middle of nowhere quietly paddling down the river and all of a sudden 2 A-10's buzzed us at maybe 200' and pulled up hard. Yep, they were doing a gun run on us for fun?, training?, just because? We never heard a thing until they passed over us. They circled and gave us a wing waggle and disappeared. It was such a cool experience to this young teenage boy.
In regards to this format it depends heavily on the aircraft itself. Like with this one maybe a combination of the regular format and this format would have been ideal

LazerPig's videoes however, are so hyperbolic to the point of being as bad as pop history. He even constantly talks down to his audience and call them wrong pre-emptively. I would HIGHLY caution you from thinking he's giving you the ""real"" story, he's merely just entertainment. In his T-34 video, he makes the dubious claim about war "when quality met quantity, quality has won every single time" and I can only guess he's makes such a bold and easily disproven claim because he just wants to bash on the T-34.
I don’t wanna be “that guy” but the A-10’s ability against modern tanks is a bit convoluted, most experts either say it’s not very effective or useless against tanks. Of course, this is against Russian tanks, the A-10 fares well against most Armored Vehicles.
My uncle works at Northrop Grumman, and he can’t talk about what’s classified. But he has reason to believe that drones are the future. So I can see drones potentially replacing the A 10. Or a modified drone version of it more likely.
A plane that was obsolete for its role the moment it was produced, which had to be pulled from combat operations because it was getting shot down too much, and which has more Blue on Blue incidences than every other aircraft at NATO's disposal *combined.* It's value is entirely imaginary in the mind of the grunts on the ground who love the *brrrrt* but whose job can be executed more effectively by several other planes.

There was a disrespectfully low amount of BRRRRT in this video
Your gun goes pew pew, my gun goes BRRRRTTT
A few years ago I was home alone doing homework when the house started shaking and I heard a loud rumble. I quickly went to the window to see see an A10 flying over probably as low as it legally could. Damn that was impressive. It’s something u can never forget. What an awesome aircraft 😎

Just saw one flying at an airshow today. I was amazed at its maneuverability and speed. Very cool to see one in the sky today!
More of our military doctrine is based around avoiding getting shot at in the first place.'
That's not even accounting for the potential 'inflation' of combat effectiveness for lack of awareness and because 'military reformists' want some media attention for being contrarian- that's beyond my purview.
@@josebrown5961 see the B52......
Also durability isn't needed when you don't get hit, the a10 gets hit alot because it's slower than a late p51 mustang
The correct title “A-10 Warthog: The most OVERRATED Warplane to ever Exist”
We also almost never use AP belts anymore, mostly HE

"The most OVERPOWERED aircraft to ever exist"
F-15C: hold my beer
During the Desert Storm period, more tanks were destroyed by the FB-111 Aardvark then there were by the A-10. However, due to the method used to count the tanks and other vehicles destroyed vs the number of missions flown, the "bean counters" gave the nod to the A-10. This ended up well for the A-10, and, of course, the FB-111 has been completely withdrawn from active service all around the world, (with Australia fielding the last ones). Now, they're talking about putting new wings on the existing frames to give them longer life in the field. Everyone loves the "B-R-R-R-R-T-T".
They aren't just talking about it, they have been regenerating wing sets non stop now for at least 7 years. I believe closer to 15 years on and off.
great video!!
Thanks for the visit
Look! There’s a plane on the gun😂
Ehhh . . .not really
It's useless in a modern peer to peer engagement, and the invasion of Ukraine is why low flying aircraft are easy pickings
The most we might see of it is flying counter insurgency operations in low threat areas
Drones may be getting more and more popular, but nothing lifts the 19 years old infantryman's morale up like the BRRRRRRRT in the morning.
Or down depending on if you are fighting aside the plane or if it’s on a flyby to raise morale.
Check out the LazerPigs videos why the A10 is shit and hated by the people whi serve beside it and have to fly to battle with it
Well... It does if you factor in the nausiatingly high amount of friendly fire and collateral civilian casualties that the A10 has under its belt.

F16: My plane has a gun
A10: My gun has a plane
r/noncredibledefense is going to get triggered here
During one of my trips to Polk for JRTC my squad was getting picked apart by an A10.
Were you op4 augmentees? A10 was on blu4 side in that mosquito filled hell hole.

"If you hear its guns, then it wasn't firing at you."
Imagine if they took the the A-10 as the inspiration for a UAV. Remote controlled BRRRRRRRRRRRTTTT
The BRRRRRT sound comes after they’re dead.
I live in Delaware, A-10s fly over my house all the time. When I see and hear one coming it gives me a great feeling of excitement, like a 10 year old.
There was a movie made, I think Empire of the Sun, WWII, Japanise prison camp somewhere. To the rescue P-51 Mustangs. Our young hero, gets all excited and as the battle comes to an end he yells "Caddilac of the skies". That scene what goes through my mind, everytime I see one go over.
Now give the gun a +-15 degree field of fire with automatic aiming for single pass multi target while evading.
It already has that field of fire. It is NOT an accurate gun. Massive splash zone.
@@Solnoric
Umm, it’s about a quarter of a degree, but I am talking about its ability to be aimed like from a turret but more likely from a bomb bay

back in the 90's my dad took me on a canoe trip in alaska.

I don’t wanna be “that guy” but the A-10’s ability against modern tanks is a bit convoluted, most experts either say it’s not very effective or useless against tanks. Of course, this is against Russian tanks, the A-10 fares well against most Armored Vehicles.
