There's an argument why I do like light furies being a subspecies, especially if their habitat is evolutionary supposed to be the arctic or a colder climate between crystals or something. In that case the color white is not a disadvantage. Arctic wolves are a subspecies of grey wolves and when they interbreed with other subspecies they create fertile offspring. If you compare an arctic fox and a red fox, you can see that the arctic fox has a shorter muzzle and smaller ears than a red fox. Their features are smaller to prevent losing heat. These are even key features to tell their skulls apart. Since we don't know how female night furies or male light furies look like, we can assume that these features are key features for their subspecies and might tell something about their habitat. That's my point of view at least.
Exifia Not many people like you get credit in the comments for knowing their biology and all about subspecies. For that, I give you a clap and a gold star. 👏🏻 ⭐️
Here is my suggestion for a more detailed, less basic Light Fury Design: - Change pure white color into an off white grey or ivory - Instead of sparkle scales make them speckled, like a shark or seal. - Get rid of dragon eyeshadow - Add more obvious scales!!!! She's supposed to be streamlined like an aquatic type, so make it so that she can actually blend into her surroundings. But what do I know, apparently I need a basic design for me to tell the sex of a dragon.
I would only add more scales. The adaptations presented by the light furies make sense for a species adapted to a snowy environment. Shorter features and less protruding fleshy bits prevent heat loss and a white sparkly coat would blend beautifully with the snow.
It’s good but these wouldn’t work for her subspecies xd, they’re pure white so they can blend into the sky and their scales are flat and shiny because they become reflective! The eyeshadow is a good point tho xD but I think that’s just from the bone structure
@@FhinxET If her scales were smooth, she wouldn't be able to blend into the sky. Take bluejays for example. Their feathers are actually grey, not blue. But because of the deep ridges in their feather structures, they literally bend light to reflect blue. Smooth surfaces cannot bend light, therefore they cannot blend into the sky.
toothless has more antennas because it helps him see in the dark along with his echo location ability but light fury is obviously a day hunter as it blends in more with a bright background which is also why she has less antennas because she doesn't have to see in the dark
But then what happened with the light fury?? She lives in a dark caverns beneath the earth, so at least one of those features would’ve helped her. The light fury before she was captured most likely never left the hidden world because after she took toothless back or good she never did, and she does have to see in the dark because of this. Even though she blends in with the clouds her white coloration is just for kids to tell them apart, when many kids can tell the difference between identical twins- people really should give children more credit for intelligence
Then it would be gray. Only the Martine and Hare have true white fur. Even they have black spots to blend into rocks, ears for the Hare, the tail tip for the Martine as well as its ears now and then. Snow leopard are gray, Arctic wolves are a cream-gray color. Polar bears have clear fur and black skin. Snowy owls have white feathers speckled with creams, blacks grays, and even browns. There is no pure white animal unless albino and they don't survive due to being easily spotted and killed, skin cancer and insects finding them easier. Only domesticated animals can be white, and the have genetic problems up the wazoo. Also, white birds are super easily spot and again, are never fully white. Seagulls, you never miss them, now think if they were as large as horses.
Teddy Bear And that would be false. They live in a dark cave-like habitat, they’re pale because of the lack of sun. They have the ability to camouflage them self with their fire, they don’t need to blend in w their habitat in any other way.
Oh don´t get people started XD I remember watching reviews for the first movies. A group in one was arguing for a long time if Toothless was based on a cat or a dog since they regoniced his mannerism of both. I think whoever got a pet can see them in Toothless. But if this animator say it was soley on cats then there you have it.
This was made before the movie came out, so I'll give passes to the lack of camouflage discussion; we later discovered that the light fury has microscopic white scales that refract light and make her disappear when she flies through fire/lightning, which admittedly was a logical reason to make the light furies white and "glittery" that fit with other dragons' abilities in the Dragons universe. That being said, I am STILL pissed about the light fury's design despite that clever workaround. It wasn't explained in the movie that she's a subspecies, and we're led to believe that she's just Toothless' beautiful female love interest, maybe a different species maybe not unless we seek out other HTTYD media. She sticks out like a sore thumb, and it's confirmed in the artbook and developer commentary that she was deisgned to look as feminine as possible to appeal to Toothless and the audience, which is super disappointing when you take into consideration literally every other female character in the series, whether dragon or human. They all have some level of dishevelled appearance and toughness about them, even Hiccup's love interest, and in the dragons' case females and males are almost always indistinguishable. That's really rare for animation, and I held HTTYD close to my heart for portraying the "ugly" side of female characters for a change, showing they're just the same as their male counterparts. At least until THW came along, that is.
I personally never thought she was an actual Night Fury, once they said Light Fury I was like 'oh, she's a different species' Because she is a different species, that gives her room to look as different from other dragons as the other dragons do. I appreciated her design because it did make her look sleek and beautiful, and I appreciated the fact that she put out there that it isnt bad if you look beautiful but not maybe as rugged or tough as the other dragons. It just adds more variety to the dragon population in the franchise as a whole, just like the human population. I never thought for a moment that she was helpless, however, and never associated that with her design. From the moment she shot that plasma blast at Hiccup when she first met them, she was the powerful, beautiful, strong-willed dragon she was supposed to be. (And, by the way, she didnt take crap from Toothless either. (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE) When he drew her a picture of herself and she stepped on it by accident, he growled at her like he did at Hiccup in the first movie. However, instead of moving, she growled back at him like 'hey, watch it buddy, it was an accident' Toothless was shocked and immediately straightened up.) As for being a different color, so what? She's a different species. She does different things than other dragons, unique in her own way. That applies for her design too. For the fact that it made her look way feminine, well we havent seen a male Light Fury. What's to say they dont look like that too? I liked they added more variety into the dragon population, that really expanded what could be in the dragon world. (The Night Lights were a nice touch, and added to that idea) Overall, I appreciated the amount of biological research that was put into this, but I respectfully appreciated her design and didnt see any flaws. I respect your opinion, this was just me contributing as well :)
Even if this is just based on the trailers, they literally say in the trailer that she "disappeared", already tipping us off that we have a dragon that can turn invisible.
I don't like her, she literally only exists to be attractive and pretty, her claws are there just for the sake of existence, they are not for her defense, they are not made to help her hold on like a toothless one, and they are useless in a fight. , and her teeth are completely round, it must be difficult for her to eat or defend herself. Dreamworks let us down in this latest movie, it's full of holes and mistakes, and we must admit, if they had given the movie a lot of thought it would have been better, and if they put a female night fury to be the toothless partner. . , it was very sad to see Toothless abandoning his whole life and all those he loved so much, who cared for him so much, the dragons he commanded, which by the way he would be willing to throw them away as we saw in the movie, for a female he met 3 days ago. ... I'm sure yes. if he waited any longer and went looking with a sob he'd find a female night rage, and it's worth more than dating the first woman he sees around, and in the end if toothless was really the last, his species is completely over, and it's over. creating a subspecies that should only be fertile by script.
detail: she has NO personality and if her personality is the one shown in Homecoming, I feel sorry for toothless, she turns out to be super manipulative and selfish, in addition to being jealous, in so long that toothless didn't visit the hiccup, imagine how many times she did the same as in homecoming, toothless drew a picture about ie visiting his best friend hiccup, and she literally rolls her eyes at him in pure disgust, and then she walks away and he still goes to comfort her, and then she seduces him to distract him, and it works , he simply forgets that he was thinking about hiccups and goes after her, she must live holding him for a long time in the hidden world, poor toothless, he deserved better, maybe if he had thought a little more and not joined her in the first days that met her.
@@v128H given her only personal interactions with humans were abuse and captivity (apart from the very few moments she spent with hiccup) I can understand her dislike of them. Toothless might've had a great experience with them the past several years, but she had nothing like that her whole life, as did most of dragon kind. Dragons had also been hunted/killed by vikings/humans up until possibly the last decade so...in her book hiccup was definitely the exception and not the rule, so I can easily see why she might be dismissive of her husband teaching their kids only the happy side of the story when humans are the dragons only (known) predator
That's what I'm thinking! Lightfuries hunt on cloudy yet not stormy days. A light fury could see better since it is day and she wouldn't need to use as many sensory organs to navigate due to her being able to actually see better due to daylight. A night fury hunts at night and uses the sensory organs to tell dragons from other animals or humans and to detect and find their way at night. A light fury could reside in the clouds and use their own sight to hunt instead of having to strike quickly and 'randomly' whilst lightfuries can plan their attacks with strategy more so than the Nightfury hit and run tactics
i thought about that, its actually the same with jaguars, some are black to hide in shadows and some are lighter and spotted to hide in the dappled sunlight of the rainforest
@@omnagia8335 hopefully considering that's what he did in the first movie. Ever since Hiccup started riding Toothless Hiccup was riding him in the day and controlling where he attacked and when
What if light furies are ground based hunters that only fly to travel or flee? This would explain why their ears are shorter, and have smaller bodies, also if they live on White beaches or arctic regions, The White is more useful on The ground than The air
They could also hunt from the clouds as a friend of mine on deviantart did: www.deviantart.com/otakusauridae/art/Bright-Fury-Hunting-748359087 This was before the reveal of the separate species/subspecies thing but it still works.
This may be very out there but maybe she is white because she could have bio luminescence in her skin that she uses to blend in when she hunts (if u see the patterns on her wings) this may not be true. There is a centipede that has bio luminescence that they can change the colour of and they become red because the beetle they hunt struggles to see red-ish tones.
That_Guy Cottle she has some sort of bioluminescence, she can turn invisible by flying into her blasts. She heats up her skin and in becomes clear like glass.
I think another good option: The light fury is just a different species. Neither a tiger nor a lion is 'wrong.' They can breed with one another, because they are in the same basic family of big cats. It's not ideal, but they can. The Light Fury is just correct for HER species/subspecies.
@@vintagetaxidermy While lions and tigers can in fact breed, their liger offspring tend to be sterile and cannot breed. This means that it is not viable for ligers to exist beyond only a few generations. If Toothless and the Light Fury are the last of their species, it would make more sense for the Light Fury to be a subspecies of the Light Fury so that they can repopulate their species well into future generations. That being said, there are probably more Night and Light Furies in the Hidden World, so they may not need to repopulate their entire species alone after all.
@@BubblyBlackbird yeah. I mentioned subspecies as a possibility in my op as well. Either way, genetically different enough that saying her species is wrong doesn't really make sense.
he probably actually isn’t the last night furies, night furies dont typically live in the place where the movie is set and the hidden world is huge there’s likely atleast some night furies somewhere
@@ch0rus_139 I hope they are not as desperate as toothless, to the point of joining the first female that appears in front of you without even knowing her well.
@@v128H He did spend time, getting to know her. There were more light furies down in the hidden world, he had options, especially as the dragon king. She saved Hiccup and accepted him as a friend(eventually), she keeps Toothless in line, taught him how to camouflage and do the lightning absorption thing. They bonded a bit over the «date» where Toothless did his hilariously ridiculous dance. Toothless may only have had one option before going to the hidden world, but I think he was fine with it. He was just happy to find a dragon like him, well, mostly. She might also be stronger than toothless without the titan mode, due to knowing her all her abilities, Toothless until HTTYD 2 could only shoot plasma, he couldn’t split his spines, camouflage, absorb lightning, use plasma for echolocation, use titan mode. The light fury probably learned this all this from her family while Toothless had no one.
Also she said that she looks helpless. Which she is not. I don’t think she should complain or say this much negative things about this movie before watching the movie. She can dislike and complain about it but not this much.
Actually quite a lot of reptiles show extreme sexual dimorphism, with many snakes the female is much larger than the male and some lizards have incrediblely vibrant males with females being a duller, more camouflaged version (google Spider-Man agama they are crazy) Personally I think she’s this colour due to leucism, a gene which is common in birds and reptiles but can be found in other places. This gene causes white or pale patches of skin or in some cases, mostly with snakes, they’re entire body is this pale colour, interestingly enough it doesn’t effect the eye like an albino allowing the natural colours to come through. Of course her eyes are blue but if it’s anything like a cat (part of the inspiration behind this species) it could be an age thing, but there’s also another gene found in reptiles that gives them blue eyes so it could be that too.
That makes sense but like why is she glittery sparkle with pink highlights you can see them on her wing why does she look like she's wearing purple pink eye shadow ?! That's what I have a personal problem with
i'm not sure if you mention this later, but her head markings are pink sparkly hearts. i don't believe we ever really see her interacting with water. Many people defend her design saying she's an arctic subspecies, but i don't believe this was mentioned anywhere. Rather, I'd argue that she is supposed to blend in with the clouds or skies with her reflective scales. although she was caught by trappers, the animators stated they didn't want her markings to look like SCARS. i hate the fact that toothless went from an unseen, elusive and intelligent dragon to the mary-sue one of a kind alpha.
Fr. It turned into a joke within the ending of the second movie and the whole third movie they changed his character build so much. He used to move like a cat and be sleek but rough. Used to not be the strongest physically clearly highly intelligent. Again he reminded me of a jaguar or snow leopard. He had grace even being a male character he was elegant, he had sass and was a dog to hiccup. Even in the Race to the Edge he was still like this, not animated as well because the episodes have to be made a lot quicker. But he still had grace and again whenever I think of httyd 3 toothless and even 2 to an extent even thought I love that movies plot. He acts like a dog. Yes he is trained to an extent but he is still a wild animal. Even lions and wolves that are raised my humans are more gentle to humans yes but are still very much wild animals. Toothless wasn’t even raised by hiccup either. He wasn’t never meant to be the strongest of them all. If he were to fight a monstrous nightmare like hookfang, toothless would win yes but only from his small size and speed. That is while in the first movie they went into the black clouds to where toothless had a huge advantage with his speed, size and coloration. But toothless is still handicapped at his tail. Toothless is fireproof but his tail isn’t.
And the creators said that the scars would be too ugly and that ‘one wrong line could mess up her entire shape’ and that making female characters is harder than male characters
These are both missing a very important point about the light fury. She literally has the ability to turn invisible (As seen in the trailer) and is probably a big reason why she's white and glittery in the first place. Light furys in a way are a counterpart to night furies where she also probably wouldn't be hunting at night, but instead during the daytime where she can reflect the sunlight off of her in a way where it helps her disappear in the sky or even more so into clouds which are white and resemble the light fury's skin almost perfectly. Her eyes are blue like the sky because any other colour would stand out way too much and give away her location in an instant if she was to look around. (There's a certain kind of fish that does this as well but I can't remember their name so if you know it please let me know!). She wouldn't need long whiskers either because there's more light during the day so she can just use her eyes to see where she's going, so instead they've been reduced probably also so that she is more aerodynamic and can move faster in the sky as well. The other thing to note is that Toothless doesn't show an interest in eating land animals like sheep, but instead he prefers to eat fish. In the first movie it's even mentioned a couple of times that Toothless never went after the sheep or would kill humans, and when he was injured he seeked out a pond where there were fish for him to catch. I would assume that it would be the same for light furies where they both would most likely hunt in the ocean by diving down from the sky into the water to catch fish like Pelicans, Cormorants, or other birds that do the same which is why blending into the sky as opposed to the land would be more important. This could also be another reason why she has less textured, bumpy, scales because scales can create friction, especially when it comes to moving through the water. Her skin texture looks a lot like an actual axolotl or other water creatures like dolphins or even a beluga whale as well which suggests that light furies have adapted to become water dragons. She also even has a dorsal like fin along her back which probably is like a fish's dorsal fin to help keep her steady in the water. Another reason why her whiskers are short is also because long or big whiskers would slow her down in the water, so instead they're smooth and also look like they press up against her head to prevent them from catching on the water as she's trying to catch fish or from other fish or predators catching them and turning her into prey. This also explains why they're seen as so rare and hard to find because oceans are huge and also very unpredictable, especially during that time period. It's virtually impossible for anyone to explore the oceans fully compared to the land and it makes perfect sense why Light furies would adapt to the ocean in order to avoid their biggest predator, humans. It's a bit too difficult to tell right now as well but I wouldn't even be surprised if light furies had adapted to be able to even breath underwater or hold their breath for way longer then night furies. Soooo... To me the light fury's design makes complete sense and no, I don't think that "They're feminizing the light furies blegh" at all. Her design makes a lot of sense and will probably make even more sense once the new movie comes out. Of course these are all just theories and I'm not a scientist or anything (Although I do love biology and I watch way too many animal documentaries... And I also do a lot of research on animals as I am a character designer myself -Not really professionally but it helps me pay the bills- so I guess those are my credentials? Haha) and I'm just writing this off the top of my head so there's probably flaws in my prediction or idea as to why the light fury is designed as she is... Buuut maybe this will help fill in the gaps just a little bit?
This is what I was thinking. This needs more likes cause this is the true explanation, I find this the most accurate to her design...you got some smart thinking there.
Holy crap yes, the trailer came out almost a month ago and right away the characters say "she disappeared" and she batted away toothless, shes not defenseless and appears to be able to hold her own. Heck, other dragons in the series have drastically different colors between the species and they aren't even confirmed sub species like the Typhoomerang.
Thank you. I could hardly finish this video because of the mountain of bullshit in it. I think people are forgetting that this movie's audience direction is toward kids. If there was TWO BLACK IDENTICAL DRAGONS. Kids wouldn't be able to tell who's who other than toothless's tail. This is not an adult movie, quit nit-picking it and enjoy her beautiful design.
The redit person did have a fair argument, however, quite a bit of what she said has plenty of exceptions in real life. As for the size difference, the majority of lizards have smaller females. She compared them to birds, but are dragons not reptiles? Sure, they fly, but that does not make them a bird. They still are scales covered, so I feel a more strong argument could be made with comparison to reptiles. As for the coloration, she could easily blended into clouds, into mist (both the cloudlike mist and mist made from waterfalls). Also, being such a powerful animal with the ability to scratch, bite, and blow your face off with a plasma blast. Blending in isn't as important for animals with tons of defense. Also, as for the lack of scales, there are in fact many snakes bred to have "no scales" which are actually just extremely tiny scales the human eye cant see. As for the tiny facial fins, this can easily be a result of her being a different speciese of animal. If it is simply a difference between the sexes, isn't it similar to how men tend to have a larger muscle mass? Perhaps it's an attraction thing, like how many male lizards jave a flap of skin to extend from the throat for attraction while tje females don't , or have tiny ones. For an example, look at iguanas. In all, I feel that there is nothing biologically inaccurate in the light fury, and in the end, it's a fantasy film. Not everything needs to line up 100% with real world animals. They're dragons, and so the animators should be creative in the I design.
Trent H. Dragon Tamer nah, white colour doesn't blend in mist or clouds. A white colored female compared to a pitch black male doesn't make sense. But can we put the biological aspects aside and just face that they wanted a ying-yang effect? Plus who doesn't like white creatures with blue eyes? The design is just awfully cliché and and they could've done better.
Chaoticgarden k, thanks. I personally keep many many lizards, and so I based my comment off of my knowledge of lizards. However, as do the dragons, they are extremely often compared to lizards, and in the how to train your dragon films, I do remember characters referring to the dragons as "overgrown lizard" and such.
Ghost Spore to be fair, while I don't disagree with therapods being birds, sauropods and any quadripedal dinosaurs also including a few orthinopods are reptilian (or at least currently thought to be). I'm not trying to start a comment war, i'm simply trying to defend my statement. I appreciate you guys trying to counter my own argument, as this is what Alteori is kind of all about.
honestly a brown/tan or even a grey/silver subspecies would still stand out at a distance and be more realistic since they are based off cats and wild cats have those kind of colorations to help them blend in with their environment so they can hunt and avoid predators and if she had more features that allowed her to survive such as longer ears ect it would both be realistic and stand out!
In the first movie Hiccup is like 12, in the next he is about 14 or something and in the next one he is a fully grown adult. In HTTYD 2 Hiccup's mother's points out there about the same age soooo I guess so?
She knows that. She is talking more about how the Light Fury's are bad character design for being female (because elements of the light Fury's design are uncommon for female animals seen in nature).
I watched the movie too, and she’s DEFINITELY a different species/subspecies... after all, toothless is supposedly “the last night fury, the one that got away”. if the night fury hunter (forgot his name) was fully aware of both the light fury and the night fury, why would he say something like that?
@@imperialhulinabis3514 Hmm... it seems That the person who wrote the Reddit article thinks that Light Fury and Night Fury are the same species, and that makes me cringe...
Yea i was confused too till i realized this post was from way before we had confirmation that its not gender differences rather more like breed differences so its fair i guess just outdated haha 😄
I think this is more a matter of opinion and design... I mean technically we see no sexual dimorphism in the other dragon species, Meatlug and Stormfly for instance look just like any other Deadly Nadder of Gronkle. If it was the case between their genders there are equal reasons why there could be dimorphism in the light and night fury species considering they are said to be intelligent and possibly not from that part of the world. I mean croc males for example are much larger than the females as well as bullfrog. Then there's also the simple reasoning that males need to advertise themselves and ward off rivals while females often do not. there is already a snow white dragon the Snow Wraith in the canon its not too far fetched to think the dragons have many adaptations
Kenneth Satria the thing is they r diff species she is a lightfury he is a nightfury do it could just be a species thing like the slithersong and deathsong diff but similar species
pepper 2015 At the point of writing this it hasnt been said in video that the commenter wrote this before the creators said she was a different type of fury
I mean, not really? That's just being lazy man. If anything the points do make sense, especially ones like the scales for the light fury design. But seriously "she's a sub-species of night fury" is such a lazy and boring argument.
SPOILERS AHEAD also please do not comment anything spoiling because i havent seen it i accidently got spoiled........ They have babies in the movie and they are black AND white, so it's proven it's a different kind.
Did you know white can also come from lack of sun?(typically white/albino is lack of pigmentation, which you need some sun to help "feed") where as brown/black etc like african american come from large amounts of sun and heat. its an adaption/survival thing as well as like a "side effect" of such living conditions. So something white/pale etc could also come from a very dark sun deprived place.
smaller antenna and rounder shape(spere has the least surface area to volume ratio) would make for a smaller surface area, and therefore less heat lost in the cold. I'm guessing they're all adaptations for living in a snowy area.
She is white because the white scales reflects the light when she goes through her plasma balls, her scales gets powered up and reflects the light to give her an invisible appearance
In the movie, SPOILER, Grimmel said Night Furies and or/Light Furies do not go North because they can not survive cold, also hinted at us since Toothless always burns ground before sleeping on it
The light fury could make herself invisible, someone remember that? She doesn’t have to blend into the sky She can make herself invisible and no one can catch her
Thinking that they only hunt dragons at night because Toothless was hunted by hiccup at night doesn't make sense she can blend into the clouds far better than any other "colourful" dragon
It was later comfirmed that her scales are reflective. So when they are heated up she “disappears”. When she cools down though she will most definetly reappear. What I think happens is that she has a cooling system in her body, that can rapidly cool parts of her body. Or the other simple anwser is that they fd up again and made another plothole in the movie. So she will still need to blend in, because she can’t keep herself warm and if she’s in a bad situation where she can’t get seen, she will most likely die, because plasma blasts are loud.
It's a LIGHT fury, not a NIGHT fury. And as we've seen from the movies and show color being a major factor in anything besides being able to tell the same dragon from another her argument about color doesn't hold up to the lore. I don't think the color is important as far as a Light fury being lighter colors than a Night fury. In her argument she keeps trying to explain what a female night fury would look like so there really is no argument beyond, 'It's a LIGHT fury female, not a female NIGHT fury.'
RifRaf T ReX also, her coloring wouldn't matter if she can LITERALLY DISAPPEAR IN THE SKY, which is shown in the trailer/teaser. I mean that was driving me crazy the entire time. Her scales don't need to hide her because her Fire can hide her
Another good point. The argument is silly just because she's trying to explain that dragons sit on their nest so they need to blend in. As we've seen from the show dragons don't do that because their eggs explode. Also color has nothing to do with anything, the only dragon that blends in is the Changewings.
@@otakuknight9852 That just raises another question, why not make another Night Fury rather then make up a new species that's never been mentioned before? The Light Fury is just a white, feminine Night Fury.
I think the Light Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury that is designed to live in a cold environment. The sparkles on her body look like they'd help her hide in the snow. She could hunt fish under the water or something, hence the streamlined appearance.
I didn't think about that till you said it. Polar bears are WHITE to Blend into the Snow. So in mountains like I'm assuming where they first see her, there is a lot of fog. Fog is also white when thick. There could also be ice caves and it's a snowy environment. It makes sense. The part on her head are possibly also short do to its a Sub-Species of the Night version. Just because their shorter doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The "whiskers" could be more sensitive and not need to be longer. The other thought is with blood circulation of why they are short. For Toothless his are longer but from what we've seen so far he hasn't lived in cold icy place yet. Could also be that if he ever needed to seem bigger to scare off something that wanted to battle him. With the Light Fury, all she would have to do is blend in to with the fog or snow or where ever she may be. From the trailer we also see how she can shoot and disappear. To top off a thought, just because shes white wouldn't be a bad thing at night. When it would come to prey they would assume its a shooting star. By the time the prey realizes it's something that is going to eat them it would be too late. Hears my reason. She's glittery... So for this version she is actually a better hunter. As such is with lions. The females do the hunting. As for Toothless he has a better chance when it's night time. Or any where that is dark. In day time regardless of time of year and season he would have a hard time for he sticks out like a sore thumb. So in the end... She's perfect the way she is. A hunter for the day and the night. The only why she would stick out is say a place that never has any fog or snow. And there was no mountains or hill to hide in a cold type of cave.
I mean we all saw the hidden world, which is a cave, so it is possible that light furies live there so they don't need dark colors. A lot of cave species are albino or even transparent. I also heard from somewhere (I forgot) that light furies heat up their scales and reflect their surroundings or something similar, which don't give them an evolutional disadvantage at all. Also I think the antennas are more of an echolocation device?? If light furies do live in caves they don't need that much echolocation I guess, just cause they don't go out to hunt that much. Let's wait till the movie comes out.
The lightfury kind of seems like a nightfury that evolved in a place with no natural predators. That's why they don't blend in as much, have smaller ear things, etc. Kind of like how axlotls have no real defense because they have few preditors.
the antennae grow with age though, it's shown in the second movie when valka counts toothless's antennae to find out his age, so probably the light fury is much younger than toothless
Another thing to keep in mind is that many animals are lighter colour when they’re younger too, or with Arthropoda when they shed, after all the light fury isn’t completely white and does have some grey patches here and there
Alžběta Bezděková could explain the lack of scales and spines. Though another comment made the theory of a cave dweller. Maybe like the flaps, the scales and spines grow in with age too. Although if LF is younger the species might be larger than the NFs as a whole. May be wrong, idk.
Actually, since toothless is so dark he'd actually kinda make a visible silhouette in the night sky. This is the same thing with ninjas, real ninjas used darker blues because straight black would actually make them stand out against the moonlight.
I mean, Toothless _is_ based off of a melanistic leopard; so Toothless might actually be a melanistic Night Fury. Perhaps the rest of his species have colours more similar to other species? (e.g. the Monstrous Nightmare or Deadly Nadder.) Edit: Toothless is an intelligent dragon; maybe he learned hunting during the night would be smarter?
I think this can be explained by saying that, in reality, the night furies are a subspecies of the light furies and not the other way around. The light furies only live in the hidden world, because when they came out they evolved into the night furies, more prepared for the outside world and that's why they became black and had other changes in appearance. That's why toothless also has invisibility as a recessive characteristic, he doesn't need it anymore, because he is black, like the night sky. Remember that the night furies were originally based on axolotls, which live in caves, like the hidden world. Who looks more like an axolotl, the night fury or the light fury? With this, many of the points that girl mentions as an evolutionary recession are nullified. On the issue of feminising it, we hardly know what the males of this species look like, so I can again rely on all of the above. I hope I have made myself clear
The animators said themselves lightfurys are the subspecies and they also said they tried to make her as feminine as possible. Proving the Reddit post right. They wanted to make her sleek and aluring. Also all dragons come from the hidden world with many of them being colorful. How come they didn’t evolve? Meatlug and the other Gronkles are the only dragons that have some kind of realistic or como appearance. But I have seen some green and purple. But the light fury doesn’t make sense at all. Why not just make a different dragon or make a female night fury. The female being gray and having longer wings or antenna making her look just graceful as toothless when he flies. She can even have yellow eyes or something. Or maybe, make a new dragon that isn’t basically an altered version of the main dragon that doesn’t make any sense. A lot of people say she is semi aquatic but again we see them in httyd homecoming and she doesn’t interact with water or swim. And if she did couldn’t they given her webbed feet and gills, dragon again are not mammals so I would think they would have them like yk the water dragons.
@@Oceansouls ahem, her tail is heart shaped. And not spiky like Toothless' tail. That tail is probably able to paddle in the water. Same with her smooth, non-spiky wings. She probably got tired when they flew out of the Hidden World and she just swam to New Berk instead while Toothless was flying above her. Remember, Toothless can also swim in "Defenders of Berk" and Race to the Edge apparently.... But I bet the Light Fury could swim even better since she has two small extra fins on her tail. 🤷
I haven't seen the trailer yet but it was confirmed by Dean DeBlois in his AMA on reddit that the Light Fury is a close relative and variation of the Night Fury.
It's a sub species, which she addresses. It's not "a totally different dragon", it's a different subset of the same species. It's like a python and a cobra, not a python and a dog. They're still pretty much the same animal.
The main reason why i respected dreamworks was their amazing details in the natural way of the dragons. Like in the tv series, i was so amazed by how they had dragons link into the world's ecosystems. Now that all the dragons are IMMEDIATELY gone, what happened to the world's ecosystems?
Not all dragons are in the Hidden World, there are only dragons from berk, Valka's sanctuary, and those, who were arleady there. There are still a lot of dragons in the wild. At least, that's what i think :p
@@wonderpetz9005 But shes a LIGHT fury. The snow thing would make sense, she probably lives in the hidden world cave system, but hunts in snowy areas, that could explain her "glittery" texture. Fresh snow tends to glitter a bit aswell.
Vikings did not just live in norway, they also lived in sweden and denmark PS: a theory is that berk was Stockholm and at that time nearly all of Stockholm was under water exept for the oldest parts (gamla stan)
You have a few flaws in your arguments here. Or rather the person who wrote this did. First off, to accept this argument you have to accept that the Light Fury is just a Female Night Fury, which is not the case. As you mentioned, the Light Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury which means it doesn't have to have the same characteristics as it's parent species. It's like saying that a Male Tabby cat is better suited to protect the young vs the parent female Orange Tabby cat because the male can blend into the environment better. To add to this argument, Toothless's origin is feline; not avian or reptilian. If you want a good toothless drawing reference look up a picture of a cat and squish its head down a little, you will instantly see what I mean. Secondly, this is a movie. If we really wanted to be biologically accurate here, Hiccup would have gotten his head bitten off when he cut Toothless loose. The idea was to stretch the imagination and go beyond nature. For freaks sake, we are talking about a movie all about DRAGONS! They aren't going to be biological about it because there isn't a reason to be. Third, your argument about the Light Fury not being able to blend in is revoked by the trailer. Not really sure how it works, but the Trailer clearly shows a shot of the white dragon shooting a fireball into the sky, flying into it and disappearing. Maybe a little obvious at first, but completely invisible after. Fourth, the light fury scales are still there. However, they are smaller and against the white color of the dragon, it makes it very difficult to see the highlights of the scales. If you look closely though, you will notice them. Fifth, coming from an animating perspective, the Light Fury not only looks great, but is a great counterpart to it's darker parent species. It give a contrast, which is a very useful design tool used consistently by artists. How often do you see a copy and a paste of a character from a movie? Hardly ever, because it is lazy design to take a character and change just a few things about it. I think they did an outstanding job when it comes to a counterpart for toothless. Sixth, it is specifically mentioned in other HTTYD movies/shorts that Berk has a primarily Winter environment (The Gift of the Night Fury even goes so far to say that it is winter 90% [I can't really remember the exact percentage, but it was above 50%] of the year in the intro) Coupled with this, the Trailer also highlights an entirely new environment. Isn't the name of the 3rd movie "HIdden World"? I would expect it to live up to that name, and from what we have seen of this environment is that it is very neon. There are a lot of bright and vibrant colors that would stand out far more than white. The argument of the eye's vs the antennae also would not be valid. Although the hidden world is underground, we have also seen that it is full of light. It did not seem like the characters needed a torch to navigate through the cave as it was lit by bio-luminescence. This would mean that the Light Fury's eyes would likely still be developed and would not need to rely on antennae as much, especially considering the contrast provided by the environment. She would easily be able to navigate the cave without antennae. Seventh, you stated that you were remaining "politically neutral," but look at the title of your video. "The LIGHT FURY design is WRONG" That doesn't sound neutral to me, especially considering your argument was heavily weighted towards the redditers point of view. Eighth, This argument is all based off of small clips seen from a trailer. We have 2 1/2 minutes of footage to back these arguments, most of which were clips from previous HTTYD movies. A 2 1/2 hour production is yet to come and we know hardly anything about the Light Fury. You haven't even given this design a fighting chance before heartlessly shooting it down from the sky, much like Hiccup shot Toothless down. Finally, your conclusion was that the Light Fury design was lazy and suggested that they should have made the Light Fury extremely similar to the Night Fury. If that suggestion isn't lazy design, I don't know what is. Seriously, look at the suggestions that you gave and tell me that isn't lazy design. I saw a literal copy and paste of toothless, nothing added, and a copy paste with a few random brush strokes and you are trying to say that is a more "unique" design than a fully different 3D Model. Based on that alone, I would say I have plentifully proved my point here.
Exactly. It seems they take it wayy too seriously and want it to be anatomically correct when it doesn't need to be. Dragons aren't real creatures and their anatomy can stretched.
Also, evolving does not mean more, it just means that over generations, some genes were more successful in some envoirements than others and it makes sense to me that since the night fury is such a successful species, it would evolve in a way to benefit further expansion
You keep bringing up that the light furry stands out too much and is too easy to see and isnt camo but in the trailer its heavily implied that she can turn invisible or "disappear".
Dylan Needham actually she doesn’t teleport, apparently it is said that when she fires a plasma blast and goes through it makes her scales reflect her surroundings, making her invisible and look like she’s ‘teleporting’ (i’m not sure how to word it, as i saw this information weeks ago)
GrayedArt - I'm not sure it's brought by either of them but the HTTYD dragons don't exhibit much if any sexual dimorphism so if there was an actual female night fury, as in not a light fury which is an established subspecies, she would look exactly the same with no visible differences except maybe color hue.
GrayedArt - I apologize then, I merely felt it was another point left unaddressed in the arguments. It's relevancy is only tangential at best. I might add however, if you'd prefer to not converse on the video's subject matter or lack thereof then you probably shouldn't go replying to said irrelevant comment in the first place.
this is something i have been speculating too, perhaps the hidden world has a rather aquatic feel to it! That would explain the light fury's short ear flaps, her smooth skin as well as the fin running down her back. There are also transparent eggs shown in the httyd3 trailer, and eggs like that are more common among fish and other marine animals!
also maybe her white color is to hide among ice, snow, fog, clouds and possibly even blinding sunlight or glittering crystals because you know she cloaks when she heats her skin/scales right? maybe the sun could heat her scales enough to induce a mild cloak effect and also belugas however her fins could maybe let her turn better in the air/water and the smooth, glossy skin is also to cloak
The thing is though: A lightfury isn’t actually a nightfury. It’s a subspecies. In httyd, both the males and females of a dragon species have virtually looked the same, so it makes sense that since these two dragons are in fact not the same species, they would look different. I don’t think dreamworks was trying to stereotype females and males, rather they were trying to stereotype light and dark. Dark being more brooding and strong and light being softer and more delicate. For all we know, lightfurys could just look like that regardless of gender. After all, it did show them living in a darker habitat correct? Hence the more pale and weaker features. They needn’t the physical attributes to fight as they are a “flight” species and can camouflage themselves. In conclusion, this whole argument seems very pointless and illogical to me. But this is just my opinion.
LordofFullmetal I did watch the fucking video, and I’m saying that this whole argument is pretty invalid mainly based on the fact that they’re a sub species.
animalwild100 True true. Although kids show or not, producers do like to put a lot of effort into their storylines and sometimes that includes paying attention to details like this.
Cold Hands the lightfury can't teleport that's a wide spread misconseption it's skin just behave like a mirror and reflects the light due to the fire of the lightfury heating up it's scale so it kinda becomes invisible in dark or forest areas for some time:)
They’re different species. And her scales look like that so that way, when under extreme heat they become mirror like. The glitter isn’t really glitter, but more so the glint of specifically shaped scales that will refract light in a way that would make her seem almost like a hologram. It also plays into her camouflage ability. Chances are, Light Fury’s evolved from NightFury’s millions of years ago and migrated to an environment similar to that of a seals. The sleeker design might indicate that they can swim. And the Light Fury’s Antenna things might not be as big due to cold weather, and the larger they are the harder it is to keep the entire things warm and functioning.
But isn't she supposed to be living in a snowy area. She would blend in and she wouldn't need her whiskers as much because they wouldn't work as well. The cover also shows a snowy cave
And this „she would be seen so easily“ is not pretty convincing, I mean the NIGHTfury can hide perfectly in dark areas and at NIGHT so logically a LIGHTfury can easily hide in very LIGHT areas and in the sky at day??? I mean yeah I get the point she sticks out whatever but who the fuck doesn’t see a nightfury in the sky at day??? ( compared to saying the lightfury would be seen so easily at night) You know?? The argument is a bit useless and far fetched
Alteori I’m pretty sure it’s because the males are very active and fly around in the canopy a lot. And I know for a fact that the females are very lazy and sit around all day. Because I have one.
Its probably because the females look more like a sedentary fruit when curled up and resting, and the males probably need to be green to avoid the hungry cats in lurking in the canopy and probably would be exposed to more sunlight most of the time
Spoiler warning just in case you didn’t watch the movie! Light fury’s can camouflage into the background, basically go invisible, like chameleons. She could be invisible when ever and where ever she wanted to, she doesn’t need to worry about blending in if she’s invisible. She also doesn’t need to blend into the night, she’s a light fury, meaning she’s probably out during the day blending into the clouds and the bright sky (on clear whether obviously)
To be honest here, from the photos you've presented, I can see how a light fury would be able to survive. The area that she appears to be found in looks misty. And idk if you know this, but white mist and a white dragon would make her completely vanish in it. Hell, you might not be able to see their eyes through that. She might live in a waterfall area, one where she would blend in exponentially with the mist, or the foam of the water. Which, would honestly make her pretty deadly. Also, she does have scales in that picture, they're just extremely small. Perhaps she has no scales so that she is faster, or can use the bio luminescence to glow bright or go invisible. In which case, that name "Light Fury" makes sense. Maybe she can glow REALLY bright, and blind attackers so she can get away. Much like how butterflies open and close their wings to scare off predators with their bright colors.
I don’t mind that the light fury is white and sparkly. Since it’s a subspecies, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an exact replica of night furies, and this gives the female her own individualities for the filmmakers to apply throughout the movie. With that being said, the one thing I don’t like is how smooth she is compared to literally EVERYTHING. The backgrounds are all shaded and detailed, the people and places etc and especially Toothless is extremely detailed. I just wish they had detailed her more with more visual depth. The glitter is perfect but it would’ve looked better if it outlined the bumps and spots that Toothless has... 🤷♀️
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it would take soo much more time then like its good those details but if they did that prob with the whole movie it would take alot longer to finish the movie and maybe thats her thing idk
Here’s my theory: we have never seen light furies, other than this one, outside of “the end of the world”. We can probably assume that the light furies are white because they live in a colder climate. We see other light furies in the giant hole in the ocean thing, and we can safely assume their are male light furies. If light furies lived everywhere people would have noticed them. Maybe the light furies hunt throughout the day. If they almost all live in the hidden world, meaning that there aren’t many land masses around then. Meaning they would probably eat mostly fish, and fish aren’t that smart. The light colour and sleek design would be better for catching fish from an evolutionary standpoint. Also ITS A FREAKING MOVIE JUST LET PEOPLE ENJOY IT. But what do I know
All great points! I think agree with the during the day thing, but not only because they would be good for fish. I think their coloring would be great for camouflaging in clouds before dive bombing down the same way night furies do in the night sky. Their smoother design even helps them blend in with the round clouds because honestly, when have you ever seen a really sharp cloud? It would be a good skill to prevent from having to shoot a flame, which would attract some attention before she could "disappear". Now touching on the point of them living in colder climates, her scales (or skin) would be great for that! Seen throughout the movie she often shimmers, and that would often help her blend in with piles of snow (It seems similar to the way a snow leopard blends in with snow and rocks thank to their spots). Really over all, they're good adaptations for where the light furies live. I absolutely agree!
Just trying to develop onto this, but, If light furies live in colder climates wouldnt they have much more blubber then night furies like seals and walruses? Reptiles are also cold blooded, so wouldnt that make it harder to survive in colder climates? I dont know if there are any reptiles in the artic, so I dont know if it is actually harder, just spitballing lol
No one prevents you from enjoying things, it's just another example of "feminisation" from the first glance (which is what most people will take away from), people have a right not to like it just like you have a right to like it
Actually the Pokémon argument is a really bad example because that’s like comparing a lizard and a bird. Totally different animals that will look totally different. Pokémon do have gender variants and they are so subtle I doubt you even noticed them. Female pikachu have a heart notch in their tails while males are a straight zig zag. Suggesting a design be made painfully obvious to children because they think they’re too stupid to tell the characters apart is basically crippling a movie out of a lack of faith in general IQ. Never assume something needs to be dumbed down for someone else. If it does end up being too hard then they’ll grow into it. Making it have more long term substance.
Kids are only as dumb as we make them. They have potential to be way more smart, but because parents don't teach them right or as soon as they need to cuz #tooyoungtounderstannnnd waah lets wait till they're in school. or see them as naive stupid underlings, well then yah its gonna act that way. Human kids especially because they are smart they know they can get away with certain behaviors and lack of effort cuz "im too young!!" my neices now use the excuse of "im just a kid! " "its too hard!" "Im 5 i cant understand this :3" etc to get away with everything. Thing is, they just aren't taking time to even remotely try to understand it. they don't want to, so they go burn their brains on stupid tv cartoons. like spongebob. *ugh.* ... Treat others how you wanna be treated holds volumes in multiple ways. And its known in psychology if you keep putting something in someones head , especially during very important crucial growth (toddlers to teenager) such as "You're dumb" "You can't"etc, their brains will slowly start to believe and emulate that. This is why places like japan are 1-2~yrs ahead of us in certain things (example like in gaming, the 3Ds was said to be the first portable 3D screen thing that you didnt need glasses for, which came from japan. We typically dont get that stuff here till a year later. and alot of our fancy products originate from places where they are stricter on their people such as korea, japan , china etc.) Koreans especially. They don't tolerate lazyness and lack of effort they will sometimes run their people into the ground. Yet they succeed in certain things. We are always capable. The only thing stopping is ourselves and peers around us (sometimes environment etc.) another example is some birds *like chickens i mean* and cats. many think they are dumb , egotistical, "evil/mean" , don't care about their owners or want attention etc etc. and where some may hold true to that... usually the case is cuz the owner decided that in their minds as soon as they got the animal and it senses that. But i have always treated my cats with respect and love, and thus got the same in return. They care about you, if you take time to care about them. Some do make you work for it. That's good imho cuz i can't trust supposed love on sight. too fickle. too easy. i even got some to sit , give paw etc. But only if they want to. Birds like chickens can be the same way. Its all a matter of how you view and treat them, and the amount of care effort and training/teaching YOU/peers etc provide. ;)
She- she- she is a different breed of the “Fury” dragons maybe she is the female variant of her species, now yes what you say is the correct stand point from an animation view needing to show the sexual dimorphism between the two but she is still a different breed with different survival traits that she might need a smoother and more “small” profile to her.
or she needed to be a simple female like how its canonly stated by the designers who made her design :) you are wrong, the only reason she looks like that is ecause she is a female, she she has to be weaker, smaller, rounded, smooth, no scars, no details, no scales because as a female she couldnt look too ''reptilian'' as they stated
Could the Light Fury’s color be for blending in the fog since where Toothless met the Light Fury is extremely foggy. The Light Fury is smoother and lighter built probably because it’s easier to hind in the fog that way.
Benjamin Chiem glad someone said it, I was already wondering why nobody mentioned clouds and maybe the returning dense fog in these movies. Still, I feel like we can't come to a final answer for this argument. We just know too little about these dragons, their natural habitat and real-life counterparts (for biological refference) hold the answer.
the light fury is the subspecies of the night fury the creators have said that and the light fury wouldn't have colour anyways because of the mirror shot she can do which when she shoots her fire and flies into it her scales mirror her surroundings The night fury is based of a cat btw toothless acts mostly like a cat in the series
In some of the trailers it shows she is not afraid to defend herself and her design make people underestimate her And her weight skin help her land into the clouds
My inner fan is saying: I don’t care, we’ll probably get more information in the movie And when I was watching this, I couldn’t help thinking “Subspecies” and the complaint on how she looks more feminine. Honestly, I could care less, she’s beautiful, and we see her act like a wild animal when she’s in a cage, and in the presents of humans. She fine and I can’t wait to see what they do with her. But I have to point out that she is a subspecies, and that means she isn’t going to look a hundred percent like female Night fury, and what if female Nigh Furies look smaller and slimmer, it means they can be more agile when hunting. And if we see a male Light Fury, what if he doesn’t look at all what Toothless looks like, maybe it would be smaller then Toothless, or the male Light Fury is just as smooth as the female and has soft feathers? I also have to point out, that maybe the reason she lived so long, is because Light Furies live in places where she is safe and humans or pray can’t get too. Or maybe she hunts on clouded days, to hide in the in the clouds. Different traits will affect how they live, and maybe her being smooth because she uses that to “hide” herself when she releases her blast, to hide herself. If you look at the design on her wings, she might use that to appeal as is she disappeared. Also, her design can’t be wrong unless they failed to copy a real female Light Fury. She is what we see her as. So it may be unfavourable, but it isn’t wrong. I can’t speak for the animators. We can’t know until the movie comes out, and analyze what the movie gives us. If it doesn’t make sense, then just wait for the movie because everything will be clear once the last movie is out.
Very cool theories, Jennifer. For all we know toothless could look completely different than the rest of his kind. We mentioned in anotherer video that he could actually be a mutated version of a Night Fury and thus even more rare. Maybe night furies look different on a wide spectrum phenotypically.
One thing though, the "whiteness" might actually be camouflage because she cloaks herself in light to become invisible, so maybe among the illuminating light of the hidden world or blinding sunlight, she will be NIGH invisible because she will be so cloaked in light that she can barely be seen and her "less sensitive vision" may actually be an adaptation to not be blinded by intense lights like harsh sunlight or the mosaic of glowing crystals also fog seems to let her move around more as seen in the trailer, probably because she is fog, mist, cloud and snow colored, and that could be another explanation for eyesight not being very important
Well someone certainly didn't pay attention during their animation course. Every good character has a different silhouette. This is based off how we as humans, view the world. We see the shape first and then see the details. It is why we have different shapes from male to female. Also why every character does not look the same if you just black them out and see their shape. Specifically as the main characters you will not be able to tell the difference if it was just a size and a bit of colour change. In an action from or if the characters are by themselves, you wouldn't really be able to quickly tell if it was toothless of the light furry. In action sequences, you will struggle even more because of the faster motion. Secondly, it's a dragon. Fictional creatures that don't obey any real set of rules. They act like dogs and cats. With bird and lizard tendencies. With also a bit of horse thrown in there. Sure there are some real life elements placed in fantasy and fiction, but there is a certain suspension of disbelief. TL;DR It is designed to be distinguishable from other characters. It's a fictional settings.
You're saying these people didn't pay attention to the rules of animation, while you're blatantly ignoring the rules of good writing. YES, the dragons' designs DO have to make sense. If you're going to establish why a species looks a certain way, which they did, you HAVE to explain why the sub species looks different. That's writing 101. Especially in fantasy and sci fi (that's ESPECIALLY; not "even in fantasy and sci fi". ESPECIALLY in fantasy and sci fi), one of the most important things is having a set of rules you NEVER break. That's how you keep the audience engaged. That's how you make them feel like the world is real. It HAS to have a consistent set of in-universe rules. That's why Faramir in the Lord of the Rings books was such a problematic character, and ended up being changed for the movie adaptations - he broke the rules of the story's universe. You spend all this time building up the ring as this evil object that ANY good person could fall to, that has the power to corrupt ANYONE, and then suddenly you have this one guy who says "I would not pick up this thing if I saw it laying by the wayside". Boom, you've just destroyed the threat of the entire series. Now the reader's gonna spend the whole time going "but why doesn't HE just take the ring to Mordor?" or "but if Faramir's fine, why did his older brother get corrupted? He must've been a bad person" when that was never Tolkien's intention. You can't just introduce the Night Fury, say "it was hunted almost to extinction, so they're black both for hunting and defence purposes" and then suddenly introduce a white sub species without giving a really good reason as to WHY that sub species is white. You can't even HAVE a sub species without explaining why it exists, because the very concept of a sub species implies some kind of evolution. Why is there a white Night Fury? Why did that evolve? What purpose does the colour serve? Why doesn't she have LONGER antennas than Toothless if she's white because she lives underground? You can create a different silhouette without being an idiot and sacrificing the audience's ability to suspend their disbelief. Also, your "each character HAS to have a different silhouette" argument is kinda bullshit anyway. I can think of tons of examples where that hasn't been the case, particularly when it comes to animal characters.
For one, I never said the it doesn't ignore story writing. But I do agree that the design needs to be influenced by the lore and fit the lore. However, my counter point would be we have no idea what's the reason or if they do give one. We have the trailer but that does not give you any information in that regards. So I cannot justify the lore side of the character design nor can you argue it was poorly written because neither of us has seen the movie yet. Maybe when it comes out we are able to better judge the lore. However my argument was how shitty the examples and excuses to the OP post. They say why and that they have these qualifications while ignoring reasons why it was done. I argued from the design stand point and it is still valid until the movie comes out. I would retract that when it does and there isn't any real good reason behind it. Don't get your knickers all twisted up man. Chill, it's a trailer with a new character that for one needed to be distinct and secondly, we have no idea what the lore is behind the light furry.
Also to add to my comment, if you read the others, the sub species was someone else's theory... I did not come up with it. Not sure why you're bring it up as a point because it wasn't mentioned nor is it cannon. It was a theory based off the trailer. If you read the other comments rather than, be quick to jump the gun there, you would have also seen someone mention that apparently, the dragons are based off cats. Where the colours changed with in the same breed of cats. While also the colours and looks of the whole species, has different variations. A species do have different looks. Take a look at humans, we all have different colour skins and looks. We are't sub species of one another but a divergent in the genome. So I don't see how you can't suspend your disbelief that an animated movie about dragons can have different colours within the same breed. Happens in nature all the time. Though I say the different abilities is weird but maybe they can explain it in the movie. If not then that's a plot hole. Otherwise I don't see a problem with my initial comment about why the toothless and lightfurry looks different. If they looked the same then there is no way the audience can tell from a glance.
I'm more ticked off at the boring character design than if it follows logic. Its a fantasy movie. As long as it's interesting it's good. But it's not. Its just like one of those shitty fan art 12 year olds draw with paint.net on deviant art, and post it as their "oc" being paired with toothless. Other than that, I think it's fine if it doesn't follow real life logic. Why should it? People are so focused on accuracy these days, it's like they're trying to be socially correct about it. Jfc it's just a movie. Why people care if it has stereotypical female features is beyond me. Dragons don't exist. Applying real life female biology onto fantasy creatures is downright fucking retarded, and people just like to pull a strawman argument to make themselves sound smart on Reddit. And the fact that these sorts of accuracies are practically irrelevant to the plot of the movie, and serve no other purpose but to appease biology majors. EDIT: There are female counterparts to males in real life that are actually like this; smaller features, more gentler, etc etc. So those of you saying the light fury is unrealistic and that even though it's a fantasy movie, should be "grounded in reality", are just ignorant, lmao. Also, when I say "it doesn't have to be accurate", i didnt mean it should throw ALL logic out the window. But enough where it doesn't affect the plot and isn't so jarring to the point where it's immersive breaking. You people know exactly what I fucking meant, Jesus Christ. Also the fact that the light fury is a completely different subspecies from the night fury, you have no idea how their male counterparts look like. A male light fury might actually look like a female light fury, small with petit features. So instead of insulting others and pushing your opinions down peoples' throats (you know who you are), how about you calm the fuck down and wait for the movie to come out and explain everything? I'm sure you people can be civilized.
Celestial Dragon FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE THAT UNDERSTANDS, i believe that one of the reasons that she is solid white is so she can be the yang to toothless' yin, it would kinda make sence vonsidering how diffrent their personalitys are and lets say dragons did exist people are saying that she wouldn't be able to hunt in the night because of her white color, thats untrue because if have people seen the add for the movie then its apparent that she can use her flames to 'disappear', where i believe that she just used her to cover herself in a temporary black coverage, making it possible for her to hunt in the dark and another thing people are getting anoeyed at the fact that she is getting called 'Luna' and i understand that people may not like gossip, and may 'think' they know that she has no name but eveb if the creator has 'confirmed it' we have no solid proof yet as anything can change and for the fact he also may be saying that to keep the light furys name a secret if she was givin one, but that does not change the fact that in the books that came out before this movie, the light fury has been named luna, so people have named this light fury luna as this light fury is surpossed to represent the luna fron the books.
SleepingWolf YT Its not the white that bothers me. It's the design and its features. It's face fins are too short and they look awkward, it has little to no visible scales, and nothing is unique about it. I wouldve loved if they gave her this wavy face fin that protrudes outward from the sides of her face, and curves up, forming something akin to a crown shape or whatever. And I feel like she's much more of an aquatic dragon since she lives in the hidden world, which is filled with waterfalls and small lakes. You know how Toothless has those fins on his tail? Put that stuff on the Light Fury's back and spine. Make it retractable. Just be creative for pete's sake. Instead of just slapping some wings on a beluga whale and calling it a day. I'm not angry, more disappointed if anything. Such a missed opportunity.
Ikr?! The whole movie revolves around DRAGONS which are, and have always been, fictional! We don’t know what dragons would look like no matter if we look at lizards. Lizards may be similar they aren’t the same thing.
The lightfury is white because she is like the opposite of a nightfury meaning that lightfuries are blending into the daylight, blending in more. The scales are also smaller so they may not be seen.
Lions Ring maybe nightfuries whete mistly rare in the first place. And where actually descebdants of lightfuries with colorration problems that made them darker.
Your forgetting that the Light Fury can turn invisible. When i watched the movie, the Light Fury seemed to turn invisible easier than Toothless. So they could very well stay invisible for most of the time hense their lack of pigment and features as you stated, they wouldnt need to be created with the same or more features as toothless if they can easily turn invisible.
This is ridiculous, the light fury isn't a night fury so that half of the arguments shot down. Plus, she's the same size as Toothless, she just has less appendages and spines so she looks smaller, which can be evolutionary explained because she's a cave dweller and they may get in he way in tight spaces, which ALSO explains her white color as many cave dwellers gain pale coloring. In short, quit looking for reasons to complain, I don't like the charecter design either but for reasons concerning her head, it needs more "ears" and the nose is too pronounced.
also she seems to only move outside when there is mist in the air, look at the scenes she was in, you see large amounts of mist or fog, also even bright sunlight may slightly "cloak" her in light because the sun may heat her skin
No not really, it's because the fandom has been wishing for white or albino night gurus for AGES but instead they gave us MORE that's what they wanted.
Someone tell this redditor that light furies can turn invisible. The director Dean DeBois already explained why light furies are more allusive. I respect her research into the biology but she needs to realize that Toothless and Luna aren't thd exact same species. And Luna's design was meant to compliment a white cat were toothless is a black cat.
The Light Fury still needs to create a plasma ball and fly through it to become invisible. This makes a loud noise that would alert prey and defeat the purpose of camouflage. I get that the creators were probably trying to find a way to work around her coloring, but I don't think it was the best choice. Also, she has no official name. Luna is a nice fan name, though.
I know its her fan name its easir to say that. But where you said it defeats the purpose of camouflage you kind of listed a reason of why it works. Her plasma fire is loud and bright which aids in her creating light refraction but also a distraction. For example octopusses using their ink to distract predators. Not only Can't they see but octopus ink stimulates predators like sharks' senses. The predators are distracted by the smell long enough for the octopus to get away. Or in this case luna's explosion last long enough to turn invisible and her procurer is distracted by the light and sound.
if yall are being realistic. No matter how much the animators love the project they need to make it as "sell-able" as possible. As Rebecca Perham (I can explain studios) who's friend, in fact WORKED ON THE FILM said. "They had to take a whole dragon out half way through production because they couldn't find a way to make it into a toy" plus, saying "iTs SeXiSt tO mAke iT lOok pReTtiEr " is absolutely ridiculous, it's a basic character design technique that artists use to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Also ITS A CARTOON WITH AN ANIMAL THAT DOESN'T EXIST. TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF A UNIQE ANIMAL (and from a movie that didnt come out yet) MAKES NO SENSE. Sense they debunked all of your points in the film, (i.e the white scales, body shape, and subspecies point) Sorry, passionate artist/animator here. This just kinda bothered me. Regardless, it's a well made video and I appreciate the research you did
Why nobody has thought that their skin is white to adapt to the colors of their environment and then become invisible, as shown in the trailer when it passes between the fireball think it as if it were the same case as the indominus they are white
i think this redditer is missing a crucial piece here, Hiccup says that it snows for most of the year and rains hard for the other part of it so the camouflage shouldnt be an issue there. also most dragons dont eat sheep they eat fish, the only dragon that's been shown to eat things other than fish are the boulder class dragons like meatlug who eat rocks, striker class like stormfly who can eat chicken and a mystery class dragon like the Deathsong which shows up in the TV series and that dragon eats other dragons. another dragon that shows up in the TV series is the Snow Wraith and it has the exact same color pallet as the light fury. it lives on place called Glacier Island which has snow on it year round. Dragons Edge where they live for most of the show also has a large mountain peaks which is always covered in snow. so evolution-wise impossible for this dragon to exist since theirs entire islands are covered in snow or large portions of islands have snowy mountain peaks and if its not a clear day the light fury shouldnt have trouble flying among the clouds traveling to other places it needs to be. since we've never seen this dragon before and we have no idea what biological or environmental reasons caused her to leave someplace she was safe at before.
awesome. I was thinking just that. Also, there are people talking about how they are inspired in cats... Well, mainly with street cats, it's quite normal to notice that males are not only bigger, but having a really large head. That happens because of numerous glands they have on their faces (also butts and paws) to keep their territory. So that could also be a reason why she is smaller. Btw, about the scales... Who said they where any help? They appear to only be there for astetics in the night furies... So what if the light ones reduced them? Maybe they didn't find it atractive, who can judge what a dragon likes or not. Evolution of sexually atractive characters is pretty random sometimes, look at the paradise birds for a change.
The fact she even has that ability is confusing to me. What's the point in her having translucent wings and white skin for blending in with sea fog if she can turn completely invisible?
I actually like the way the light fury looks, it's graceful. Also they actually did make the light fury look more like a night fury similar to your friend's edit. They show all of the concept art for the light fury and why they went with the final design in the art book they made. Dreamworks stuck with the final design of the light fury because they wanted something appealing to the eye, they were not focusing one evolution (it wouldn't look good on screen). Basically they wanted her to be powerful and graceful (you can find those words in The Art of How to Train Your Dragon:The Hidden World) Going back to your friend's edit, they did not keep their design that was like that because it simply did not look good on screen or as an important character that the audience would see a lot. They wanted the character to be clearly feminine and to be smooth and beautiful.
what6 they wanted was to create a sexist harmful design, a simpply lady dragon, shallow no personality with no scars because women dont look pretty with scars, no scales because females cant look too reptilian, she ahd to be smaller and rounder, more graceful while mtoothless styopped being graceful, becauise males cant be graceful while females have to be slick and lurring. its disgusting whatb thy did with the li9gjht furies design
pre00.deviantart.net/538c/th/pre/f/2018/159/8/e/night_and_light_fury_by_tsaoshin-dcdvk1s.png Look at the first image and you will see the tail difference
1. Animal females usually aren’t showing and are usually smaller than males. 2. That would make it to very confusing for the audience if both characters look the same. 3. The light fury obviously looks like she lives near the sand of snowy area in the cave so she would live fine there. 4. And white can be well camouflaged in the moon light that’s why real life ninjas would dress mostly white. 5. Evolution would lead them to change habitat. 6. A falcon is a quick attack predator while Night furies seem to be ambush predators. 7. And she has smoother skin and shorter wings because she lives in a cave so flying long distances wouldn’t be needed. And if she does live near a sandy area smoother skin would let her go quicker than sand. 8. One of the animators said she was white to make a Ying and Yang symbol. And to make her look a more cold, mysterious, and sinister character not innocent. 9. Also whispering deaths seems to be natural rivals which means that light furies and night furies would be used to cave dwellings. 10. It’s possible that Night furies are from a more sunny area while light furies might come from colder and darker areas. 11. Antennas seems to be more vestigial or for show so it makes sense why she has smaller ones. 12. It’s not lazy design it’s actually surprisingly complex. 13. It makes sense if you know what spit evolution is. 14. Compare Grizzly to Polar bears and you’ll get my main issue.
They are always bigger than males.... Unless they're birds, bird sizes are the same. The complaint was, "How come girls in children's movies are always portrayed as lighter, blue eyes, perfect, round, and smooth coated?"
May I also say her design almost looks aquatic not only for the small and sleek sizes, but reminds me of a fish with fins, you can see where her scales should be, they’re more like fins or something. And the bulbs on her attenti things, they seem more obvious than the ones on toothless. And also it is shown light fury’s have the same cloaking and they hide better when flying during day time
I don't think they're antennae, more like ears. Since light furies are a subspespecies of night fury meaning all light furies are like toothless' girlfriend. Also the light furies scales are pretty obviously still there.
With electus parrots the female is the red and purple one. The green is male. You made it sound like the female was green when she isn't? Maybe I heard it wrong but if not I am just telling you and everyone; female red male green😂
Yeah, my grandma used to breed parrots, and I remembered learning that when I was litttle..."But the green one was named Giuseppe... That's a boy's name XD"
Ikr. It's a KIDS movie. The "Light fury" isn't the same as the "Night fury", cuz kids wouldn't see the difference between the two dragons. They would be mistaken by each other. So the animators made the Lighy fury white and more girl like, but Toothless the opposite of her. That makes them cute togheter. Almost like the Yin Yang symbol. I disagree with the girl, who said that Light fury would need to look bigger then Toohless. Cuz it's a dragon, and dragons relite to lizards/snakes? I personally don't think that there's anything wrong with the desigh. She looks nice cuz u can see that she's a girl. Also idk why, but this video pisses me off so much, cuz she's so serious about this. But this is only my opinion.
@@bu657tfm3 Well at the end of the day it's only a silly TH-cam video that will later be forgotten in a few years so don't let it bother you too much (sorry I just realized how harsh that sounded I just mean that people arn't going to be as attached to this movie once it's old so the topic wont be relevant anymore) . I think the size of the dragons is still stretching it haha like I get some of the female dragons didn't look different from the others which I get why that would make someone rase a question mark. You could counter argue that dragons are usually associated with boys and so with this character they can bring the concept to girls. I don't see a problem in the femininity I think a lot of extreme feminists have a problem with it women are allowed to embrace what their mama gave them we don't have to seem more like men to gain respect or at least we shouldn't have to. I think these kinds of things are a good influence on girls.
Yeah I mean just watch the movie and get on with ur life that’s the way they decided to make her different especially bc it’s for kids it has to be easy to tell them apart
But while that person made really good points, "Light furies" can literally disappear into their surroundings which can actually help them survive better than the "Night Furies" because they can not only stay safe and hunt at night, but stay safe during the day. But I also think that the "light fury" is simply a similar, but smaller species of dragons that's very closely related to night furies, but still not closely related enough to be a subspecies.
I have two possible ways that her design makes sense: 1: Her colour and other features that seem to work as a disadvantage to her could be from a genetic bottleneck from the lack of diversity, which could have resulted in her deformed state. 2: As with birds, maybe they have different breeding “plumages” and that is why they look so different I don’t know how accurate this could be, but it would be interesting to see your thoughts on this XD
her cloak works when she heats her scales, so she may heat them up in sunlight, giving her a mild cloaked hue, also she tends to appear in foggy conditions, look at the trailer also her smaller flaps and snout may be from her living in caves like the hidden world
@Soapy Dragon I agree with your first argument. Being hunted down to near-extinction, much like the Nightfury, would probably cause a genetic bottleneck at some point. That would also(probably) explain as to why she would choose Toothless as a mate. Being a subspecies would most likely still allow her to produce viable offspring with him. Animals crossbreeding in the wild, although rare, do happen.
Technically, the white in the yin yang symbolises masculinity, and the black symbolises feminity. So Toothless would have to be white and the Light Fury would have to be black for the symbol to make sense- But I get ya. I'm gonna stop ruining this now oof
You are backwards on the eclectus parrots. The male is green....not the female. The female looks like the "delicious fruit" not the male. Dean has stated that her scales are white, smooth, and shimmer as to allow her to perform her cloaking ability. They become mirror like when super heated by her plasma and essentially turn her invisible when she flies through. She always wraps herself in her wings as she does this so perhaps the pink patterning on her wings has something to do with this. I personally do not care for this explanation and agree with you and the writer in that I wish she were essentially the same as Toothless.
Hiccup found toothless in the dark sky and managed to hit and some may say lucky shot but he managed to track him pretty well but in the light furies case she was unnoticed by at least 200 Vikings and 300 dragons until she has shown herself
Random person? The person who wrote the article has a veterinarian and animation degree. She knows what she's talking about. Even then, with just basic knowledge on evolution, the light furys design makes absolutely no sense. Just DreamWorks trying to make the female helpless and soft again...
Agreed
this is a really good point
I was thinking along the same lines
thats exactly what i said in my comment
Exifia Not many people like you get credit in the comments for knowing their biology and all about subspecies. For that, I give you a clap and a gold star. 👏🏻 ⭐️

_Actually_ , Toothless and the Light Fury's babies may be called Night Lights...
I may have done a _little_ bit of research.
Me and my friend call the black ones with white on them sock furies. Because they look like they’re wearing socks. But night light is also super cool.
I call them night lights too!
I think night light sound better
@@Pushups_In_Drag I've been calling them TuxedoFuries.
So when the night lights are adults are they still called night lights?
Here is my suggestion for a more detailed, less basic Light Fury Design:
- Change pure white color into an off white grey or ivory
- Instead of sparkle scales make them speckled, like a shark or seal.
- Get rid of dragon eyeshadow
- Add more obvious scales!!!!
If the night fury is a day hunter light grey to blend with the sky
It’s good but these wouldn’t work for her subspecies xd, they’re pure white so they can blend into the sky and their scales are flat and shiny because they become reflective! The eyeshadow is a good point tho xD but I think that’s just from the bone structure
@@FhinxET If her scales were smooth, she wouldn't be able to blend into the sky. Take bluejays for example. Their feathers are actually grey, not blue. But because of the deep ridges in their feather structures, they literally bend light to reflect blue.
Smooth surfaces cannot bend light, therefore they cannot blend into the sky.
@@goathead5073 yes but they are used to reflect so that they can become invisible for a few seconds
toothless has more antennas because it helps him see in the dark along with his echo location ability but light fury is obviously a day hunter as it blends in more with a bright background which is also why she has less antennas because she doesn't have to see in the dark
that is interesting
But then what happened with the light fury?? She lives in a dark caverns beneath the earth, so at least one of those features would’ve helped her. The light fury before she was captured most likely never left the hidden world because after she took toothless back or good she never did, and she does have to see in the dark because of this. Even though she blends in with the clouds her white coloration is just for kids to tell them apart, when many kids can tell the difference between identical twins- people really should give children more credit for intelligence
@@-PocketPuppies983- you don’t have to see in the dark down there, it’s a fucking disco in there
@@Da-choppa You do you- it’s just dark in there _
HOW DOES THAT HELP HIM SEE???
They got eyes or something-
I think light furies are either meant to blend into the clouds, or into the snow.
Teddy Bear
And that would be false. They live in a dark cave-like habitat, they’re pale because of the lack of sun. They have the ability to camouflage them self with their fire, they don’t need to blend in w their habitat in any other way.
Smiles x
Also true.
Teddy Bear yes, thank you. Night furies hunt at night, light furies hunt at light.

No they don’t. Refer to other comments
Talked to a friend who actually did animation for this movie. Both Toothless and his new girl (haven't watched it yet) were based off cats.
That makes a lot of sense since their mannerisms resemble that of cats.
That would make a lot of sense toothless does act a lot like a cat
Toothless is actually based off of a black panther aka. a cat
Moss'n'Friends Draw they always seemed based off cats
However, instead of moving, she growled back at him like 'hey, watch it buddy, it was an accident' Toothless was shocked and immediately straightened up.)
As for being a different color, so what? She's a different species. She does different things than other dragons, unique in her own way. That applies for her design too. For the fact that it made her look way feminine, well we havent seen a male Light Fury. What's to say they dont look like that too? I liked they added more variety into the dragon population, that really expanded what could be in the dragon world. (The Night Lights were a nice touch, and added to that idea)
Overall, I appreciated the amount of biological research that was put into this, but I respectfully appreciated her design and didnt see any flaws.
Dreamworks let us down in this latest movie, it's full of holes and mistakes, and we must admit, if they had given the movie a lot of thought it would have been better, and if they put a female night fury to be the toothless partner. . , it was very sad to see Toothless abandoning his whole life and all those he loved so much, who cared for him so much, the dragons he commanded, which by the way he would be willing to throw them away as we saw in the movie, for a female he met 3 days ago. ... I'm sure yes. if he waited any longer and went looking with a sob he'd find a female night rage, and it's worth more than dating the first woman he sees around, and in the end if toothless was really the last, his species is completely over, and it's over. creating a subspecies that should only be fertile by script.
detail: she has NO personality
and if her personality is the one shown in Homecoming, I feel sorry for toothless, she turns out to be super manipulative and selfish, in addition to being jealous, in so long that toothless didn't visit the hiccup, imagine how many times she did the same as in homecoming, toothless drew a picture about ie visiting his best friend hiccup, and she literally rolls her eyes at him in pure disgust, and then she walks away and he still goes to comfort her, and then she seduces him to distract him, and it works , he simply forgets that he was thinking about hiccups and goes after her, she must live holding him for a long time in the hidden world, poor toothless, he deserved better, maybe if he had thought a little more and not joined her in the first days that met her.
She could hunt at day, using the clouds as cover? Then the roundness would make sense
Maybe Toothless will get to display some of those "hit and run" tactics near the end of the moive, 'ey?
@@omnagia8335 hopefully considering that's what he did in the first movie. Ever since Hiccup started riding Toothless Hiccup was riding him in the day and controlling where he attacked and when
not to mention snowy and ice capped areas
What if light furies are ground based hunters that only fly to travel or flee? This would explain why their ears are shorter, and have smaller bodies, also if they live on White beaches or arctic regions, The White is more useful on The ground than The air
They could also hunt from the clouds as a friend of mine on deviantart did: www.deviantart.com/otakusauridae/art/Bright-Fury-Hunting-748359087
This was before the reveal of the separate species/subspecies thing but it still works.

If they were a different species they couldn't interbreed
@@holly3102 lions and tigers can breed. So can wolves and dogs. They are close enough to breed, but not the same animals
Of course, for all we know their offspring are horrible genetic defects and the movie just didn't get to that haha. Who knows
This is sad because it means that Toothless really is the last night fury. I was hoping he'd find one like him but the Light fury is still so pretty
he probably actually isn’t the last night furies, night furies dont typically live in the place where the movie is set and the hidden world is huge there’s likely atleast some night furies somewhere

They never even talked about the fact that she can go invisible/ camouflage
Or that her coloration blends in perfectly with stuff like snow and clouds.
Also she said that she looks helpless. Which she is not. I don’t think she should complain or say this much negative things about this movie before watching the movie. She can dislike and complain about it but not this much.
Iced Art you do realize that this was from back when all we had was a few screenshots and the poster -_-
Lunar Aurora this was also made when the first trailer came out and if you watch it you will see that in a scene she does go invisible
Snowmist the video was, but the post was actually just a few days before the trailer
Light furies blend in in the day. Night furies blend in in the night.
ye because the cloud is white or whatever reason if im not correct
Actually quite a lot of reptiles show extreme sexual dimorphism, with many snakes the female is much larger than the male and some lizards have incrediblely vibrant males with females being a duller, more camouflaged version (google Spider-Man agama they are crazy)
Personally I think she’s this colour due to leucism, a gene which is common in birds and reptiles but can be found in other places.
Thank you for explaining this to the professional dumbass feminist.😑
Tbh I agree with this, it’s been said that most noises they make in the movies are from cats as well.

I could say so much more but all in all the third movie makes me mad.
I mean- what did you expect? Toothless is already tamed💀
And the creators said that the scars would be too ugly and that ‘one wrong line could mess up her entire shape’ and that making female characters is harder than male characters
basically sexism @@donutcat5535
In the first movie hiccup said “ it snows seven months and the rest it heals” so the light fury is a evolved one
GREAT POINT!!!! However that's only on Berk. It make more sense if the from which the dragon originated was Artic in nature.
True
Buuut maybe this will help fill in the gaps just a little bit?
ok 😂 finally finished actually that makes a lot of sense also I almost died reading all that 😂
Lol! Yeah I almost died writing it >.
Trent H. Dragon Tamer actually many female reptiles are larger than males, it's like that with many species.
With the exception of lizards
Chaoticgarden k, thanks. I personally keep many many lizards, and so I based my comment off of my knowledge of lizards. However, as do the dragons, they are extremely often compared to lizards, and in the how to train your dragon films, I do remember characters referring to the dragons as "overgrown lizard" and such.
I believe they were compared to birds because dinosaurs are believed to be the origin of the dragon myth.

They have babies in the movie and they are black AND white, so it's proven it's a different kind.
Also about the hunting thing, haven’t you noticed that she was most active during the day and blends perfectly with the clouds?
She's white because she lives further north in the white color is most likely to blend in with the snow at least that's my theory
Jacki B well she’s west from Berk
She is white because the white scales reflects the light when she goes through her plasma balls, her scales gets powered up and reflects the light to give her an invisible appearance
In the movie, SPOILER, Grimmel said Night Furies and or/Light Furies do not go North because they can not survive cold, also hinted at us since Toothless always burns ground before sleeping on it
The light fury could make herself invisible, someone remember that?
She doesn’t have to blend into the sky
She can make herself invisible and no one can catch her
This came out before the movie and when only 2 trailers were available to watch..
@@TheWorgenGamer she still did it in the movie
@@Therealjamethawng I know but I was talking about the video. She never mentioned it officially in the vid due to it being posted before the movie.
Yes
Agree. From the name itself. Like when you see an African Lion beside a white lion. Both are lions but have different coat colors.
That's a really good point!
I thought aswell, what if she was from very far away, far north, living in snowy conditions and had to adapt to that climate! :)
came here to say this, its kind of obvious? Her skin fits very well in a snowy/icy environment, even her eyes.
The argument with the norwegian raindeers during winter supports this as well.
Another thing to keep in mind is that many animals are lighter colour when they’re younger too, or with Arthropoda when they shed, after all the light fury isn’t completely white and does have some grey patches here and there
Alžběta Bezděková Does that mean Toothless is a pedophile
maybe
That’s actually a good point
Alžběta Bezděková could explain the lack of scales and spines. Though another comment made the theory of a cave dweller. Maybe like the flaps, the scales and spines grow in with age too. Although if LF is younger the species might be larger than the NFs as a whole. May be wrong, idk.
The light fury could hide in clouds and disappear
Since clouds are white
I was about to say that lol
Fishing Forever sucks to be the light fury on clear days then haha.
Tobarethian Commenter a clear day would be grate on a clear day clouds are white and yeh light fury is white
Fishing Forever on clear days there are no clouds...
Actually, since toothless is so dark he'd actually kinda make a visible silhouette in the night sky. This is the same thing with ninjas, real ninjas used darker blues because straight black would actually make them stand out against the moonlight.
Lycaon 1765p wow really did not know that
Lycaon 1765p +
I mean, Toothless _is_ based off of a melanistic leopard; so Toothless might actually be a melanistic Night Fury.
Perhaps the rest of his species have colours more similar to other species? (e.g. the Monstrous Nightmare or Deadly Nadder.)
Edit: Toothless is an intelligent dragon; maybe he learned hunting during the night would be smarter?
isnt he part blue? or am i colorblind
Internextion
Are you thinking of his glowy bits when he's in alpha mode? Or the color of his fire?
@@BillCipher287 male light fury's tail fins are also spiky, but more arrow shaped, has extra fins just as female light fury.

PS: a theory is that berk was Stockholm and at that time nearly all of Stockholm was under water exept for the oldest parts (gamla stan)
I find it funny that we've almost never seen it snow directly in Berk.
If I‘m right, you have successfully roasted the whole video and the redditer. And I fully agree with your point of view.
Chris Merrell YES! You touched on everything I was thinking
My cat ligit looks like Toothless.
You keep bringing up that the light furry stands out too much and is too easy to see and isnt camo but in the trailer its heavily implied that she can turn invisible or "disappear".
GrayedArt
Fair point
Dylan Needham actually she doesn’t teleport, apparently it is said that when she fires a plasma blast and goes through it makes her scales reflect her surroundings, making her invisible and look like she’s ‘teleporting’ (i’m not sure how to word it, as i saw this information weeks ago)
GrayedArt - I'm not sure it's brought by either of them but the HTTYD dragons don't exhibit much if any sexual dimorphism so if there was an actual female night fury, as in not a light fury which is an established subspecies, she would look exactly the same with no visible differences except maybe color hue.
Professor Coldheart thats pretty irrelevant to my comment lol
GrayedArt - I apologize then, I merely felt it was another point left unaddressed in the arguments. It's relevancy is only tangential at best. I might add however, if you'd prefer to not converse on the video's subject matter or lack thereof then you probably shouldn't go replying to said irrelevant comment in the first place.
A female night fury was what we expected, what we wanted, what we didn’t end up with.
Maybe it was just a simple design choice....not everything is some grand conspiracy....
I just realized the light fury seems more aquatic
Elijah Pointer that would be cool. She probably has retractable parts as well
this is something i have been speculating too, perhaps the hidden world has a rather aquatic feel to it!
She reminds me of a salamander
Elijah Pointer why do i feel like light furies or night furies one of em is a hybrid species
"It's a sub species"
This was literally one of the first things she said. Watch the fucking video before you respond.
LordofFullmetal
I did watch the fucking video, and I’m saying that this whole argument is pretty invalid mainly based on the fact that they’re a sub species.
animalwild100
True true.
Leander Kohlmann-Joss
Well alrighty then, nonetheless, it’s still a flight species and doesn’t need to fight as it can camouflage itself.
This came out before the movie when we had 2 available trailers to watch.
They explain the antenna as being a way to determine age, shes younger...
What about snow... these are vikings, cold and dark, snow and ice and little sun... also clouds are white.
But isn't she supposed to be living in a snowy area. She would blend in and she wouldn't need her whiskers as much because they wouldn't work as well. The cover also shows a snowy cave
She does look a lot like snow xD
yeah, a night fury in the snow would be pretty useless, right? they'd stick out so much
And this „she would be seen so easily“ is not pretty convincing, I mean the NIGHTfury can hide perfectly in dark areas and at NIGHT so logically a LIGHTfury can easily hide in very LIGHT areas and in the sky at day??? I mean yeah I get the point she sticks out whatever but who the fuck doesn’t see a nightfury in the sky at day??? ( compared to saying the lightfury would be seen so easily at night) You know?? The argument is a bit useless and far fetched
Oh boy I sound so angry i‘m sorry😂😂 i‘m not mad i promise just a bit uh confused i‘d say
4:16 great video, but it’s the male that’s green and the females are red
You are correct.
Alteori I’m pretty sure it’s because the males are very active and fly around in the canopy a lot. And I know for a fact that the females are very lazy and sit around all day. Because I have one.
Its probably because the females look more like a sedentary fruit when curled up and resting, and the males probably need to be green to avoid the hungry cats in lurking in the canopy and probably would be exposed to more sunlight most of the time
okay, interesting behavior
Melissa Forward cool, I didn’t know that.
This too! I think people should wait until we know more about her before attacking her design.
Ice Venom My thoughts, exactly
What if she comes from a snowy climate or a place with lots of clouds/weather?
SHE COMES FROM THE HIDDEN WORLD OMFG EVEN THE TRAILER CAN CONFIRM THAT. EVEN THE TEASER PICTURES CAN CONFIRM THAT

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT MY PROBLEM WITH HER DESIGN IS
Just wanna say
The light fury is definitely *not* helpless
she is definietly not as powerful as toothless because females can be strong like males, according to the people who designed her fopr the moivie
Let's not forget the suspension of disblief... it's a fantasy cartoon afterall.
Though probably we'll get a better undestanding once the movie is out.
Mattia Berti
That could only go so far.
I agree. I'm sure everything will be properly elaborated when the movie comes out.
But what do I know
The smoother scales and smaller ear things also helps with diving and water. More evolution
The smaller ears and shorter nose also helps maintain body heat in the cold as the longer bits would loose body heat faster.
Im gonna one up you and point out Torchic's single pixel difference.
Killer Meme Queen the argument was that Pokémon doesn’t think it’s audience is too stupid for subtle gender design changes.
Not about one-upping.
This is a fantastic point.
What if the Light Fury is supposed to blend with clouds and just dive down
but my guy animals in caves lose most of their color for they have no need for it and they usually turn blind as well
Sir Turtle The Great
Actually their scales are reflective. So they can just hide anywhere as long as they go through their own flames
Nadia Jones Basically like how i hide in light.
the light fury is the subspecies of the night fury the creators have said that and the light fury wouldn't have colour anyways because of the mirror shot she can do which when she shoots her fire and flies into it her scales mirror her surroundings
The night fury is based of a cat btw toothless acts mostly like a cat in the series
In some of the trailers it shows she is not afraid to defend herself and her design make people underestimate her And her weight skin help her land into the clouds
her design is sexist and harmful, she couldnt have scars because women with scars arent beautiful or with reptilian scales
My inner fan is saying: I don’t care, we’ll probably get more information in the movie
And when I was watching this, I couldn’t help thinking “Subspecies” and the complaint on how she looks more feminine.
Lol axolotl dimorphism(not very different apart from sexual organs)
Alteori the light fury is a subspecies, the director confirmed it
Well someone certainly didn't pay attention during their animation course.
We figured that's most likely the reason for the distinction; so people could readily tell the difference especially when the animals are in flight.
heartofthedarklight
You hit the nail on the head.
I saw toothless in the dreamworks logo when we went to see the first movie in the theater. I was the only one that noticed it.
alieninvaider me 2

no you weren't you don't know if other people saw it
toothless well I did ask around and everyone I asked said they didn’t see it.
alieninvaider not the only one ;)
Alteori:You missed the dreamworks night fury!
Me who spots the night fury every time i watch the movie:You underestemaite my power.
Thank you fucking finally, someone is finally talking sense around here!👏🏼👏🏼
Celestial Dragon FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE THAT UNDERSTANDS, i believe that one of the reasons that she is solid white is so she can be the yang to toothless' yin, it would kinda make sence vonsidering how diffrent their personalitys are and lets say dragons did exist people are saying that she wouldn't be able to hunt in the night because of her white color, thats untrue because if have people seen the add for the movie then its apparent that she can use her flames to 'disappear', where i believe that she just used her to cover herself in a temporary black coverage, making it possible for her to hunt in the dark and another thing people are getting anoeyed at the fact that she is getting called 'Luna' and i understand that people may not like gossip, and may 'think' they know that she has no name but eveb if the creator has 'confirmed it' we have no solid proof yet as anything can change and for the fact he also may be saying that to keep the light furys name a secret if she was givin one, but that does not change the fact that in the books that came out before this movie, the light fury has been named luna, so people have named this light fury luna as this light fury is surpossed to represent the luna fron the books.
GRIFFIN STUDIOS Explain to me how a female dragon not following the expected female biology is supposed to be a fucking flaw.
The lightfury is white because she is like the opposite of a nightfury meaning that lightfuries are blending into the daylight, blending in more. The scales are also smaller so they may not be seen.
Can still be seen in the sky. Her camouflage basically depends on the amount of clouds. But oh, they thought of that, she can go invisible oooooh 😒😮💨
Maybe the night fury is a evolutionary descendant of the light fury
Lions Ring actually it’s the exact opposite
Jo Anthony Flores now how would you know that
Lions Ring maybe nightfuries whete mistly rare in the first place. And where actually descebdants of lightfuries with colorration problems that made them darker.
other way around.
No it's the other way around, animators confirmed
Your forgetting that the Light Fury can turn invisible. When i watched the movie, the Light Fury seemed to turn invisible easier than Toothless. So they could very well stay invisible for most of the time hense their lack of pigment and features as you stated, they wouldnt need to be created with the same or more features as toothless if they can easily turn invisible.
This came out almost 4 years ago before the movie actually came out
but the thing is when this was posted httyd wasnt released yet and shes just judgeing by the trailor
@@shardydean1697 Oh, I didnt know that
This is ridiculous, the light fury isn't a night fury so that half of the arguments shot down. Plus, she's the same
size as Toothless, she just has less appendages and spines so she looks smaller, which can be evolutionary explained because she's a cave dweller and they may get in he way in tight spaces, which ALSO explains her white color as many cave dwellers gain pale coloring. In short, quit looking for reasons to complain, I don't like the charecter design either but for reasons concerning her head, it needs more "ears" and the nose is too pronounced.
Jackal Nerf THANK YOU FOR THAT I REALLY NEEDED TO READ THAT THANK THANK THANK YOU!! XD
You are very welcome.
also she seems to only move outside when there is mist in the air, look at the scenes she was in, you see large amounts of mist or fog, also even bright sunlight may slightly "cloak" her in light because the sun may heat her skin
Jackal Nerf Pretty much the only reason for her design is to appeal to kids. Honestly, she looks like some Mary Sue oc with the ugliest design made.
No not really, it's because the fandom has been wishing for white or albino night gurus for AGES but instead they gave us MORE that's what they wanted.
My big question is why light fury’s aren’t called day furies
It sounds better.
Because she doesn’t really have daylight to go by. She lives in a giant cavern and doesn’t seem to go outside from it.
MOONlightfuries!
Because "Day Fury" sounds ridiculous.
Kittyfoxcat lmao
Elena Vegas actually its cloaking, she's heating her scales to travel with the speed of light, that explains why you can't see her
Horrendous Haddock yeah I meant that, but I forgot at that moment, I'm not that great in English
Ew. Luna.
Is that the canon name?
if yall are being realistic. Also
ITS A CARTOON WITH AN ANIMAL THAT DOESN'T EXIST. TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF A UNIQE ANIMAL (and from a movie that didnt come out yet) MAKES NO SENSE. Sense they debunked all of your points in the film, (i.e the white scales, body shape, and subspecies point)
Sorry, passionate artist/animator here.
This just kinda bothered me.
Regardless, it's a well made video and I appreciate the research you did
But in counter , the light fury lives in a snowy ecosystem wouldn't it be more effective to blend in in day time . It snows 9 months of the year
Cherry Dean and hails the ther 3
Why nobody has thought that their skin is white to adapt to the colors of their environment and then become invisible, as shown in the trailer when it passes between the fireball think it as if it were the same case as the indominus they are white
That is not an excuse for her looking like a sperm :/
i think this redditer is missing a crucial piece here, Hiccup says that it snows for most of the year and rains hard for the other part of it so the camouflage shouldnt be an issue there. also most dragons dont eat sheep they eat fish, the only dragon that's been shown to eat things other than fish are the boulder class dragons like meatlug who eat rocks, striker class like stormfly who can eat chicken and a mystery class dragon like the Deathsong which shows up in the TV series and that dragon eats other dragons. another dragon that shows up in the TV series is the Snow Wraith and it has the exact same color pallet as the light fury. it lives on place called Glacier Island which has snow on it year round.
Evolution of sexually atractive characters is pretty random sometimes, look at the paradise birds for a change.
yes they act way more like cats then reptiles and what the animals were going for
Did anyone remember that she can turn invisible....?? No just me
The fact she even has that ability is confusing to me. What's the point in her having translucent wings and white skin for blending in with sea fog if she can turn completely invisible?
Ye XD
Because it wears off at some point, and she can’t pit out fire all the time.
@@lucasmckenzie8525 many animals with the ability to change colours have a dull or pale default state.

Basically they wanted her to be powerful and graceful (you can find those words in The Art of How to Train Your Dragon:The Hidden World)
Going back to your friend's edit, they did not keep their design that was like that because it simply did not look good on screen or as an important character that the audience would see a lot.
She literally turns invisible so she can hunt and survive just fine
For someone who has seen the movie
But her ability that's the same as Toothless' doesn't make her a night fury
What if male light furies look Just like Luna?
Well, males are different, they will maybe have more scales or longer ears, idk
Nicole Cedeno yeah I think those little flappy ears are how you tell the difference
Tyrannapus And Friends, Yeah and also the tail, males may have the normal shaped but females like in a heart shaped

Look at the first image and you will see the tail difference
Shiny Gamer She has no name -_-
My problems with this idea. And why those choices make sense.
RandomOtakuNerd actually I'm going to correct you on the ninjas part ninja wear navy blue not white
They are always bigger than males.... Unless they're birds, bird sizes are the same. The complaint was, "How come girls in children's movies are always portrayed as lighter, blue eyes, perfect, round, and smooth coated?"
Ninjas dress in black but ok ( I know this for a fact, my mum is a Kunichi)
they prove pretty much everything you say in this wrong in the video lmao
May I also say her design almost looks aquatic not only for the small and sleek sizes, but reminds me of a fish with fins, you can see where her scales should be, they’re more like fins or something. And the bulbs on her attenti things, they seem more obvious than the ones on toothless.
And also it is shown light fury’s have the same cloaking and they hide better when flying during day time
I don't think they're antennae, more like ears.
Since light furies are a subspespecies of night fury meaning all light furies are like toothless' girlfriend.
Also the light furies scales are pretty obviously still there.
Splendorman‘s proxie im pretty sure different species and subspecies are two different things.
This doesn't really change fact that her design doesn't make much sense as design for a creature that is supposed to survive in environment.
What another HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON HATER?! Omg. You dont like their ear flaps?! Get outa here. Not in a good way. GET OUT

@@ewabrzakaa6395 Her design actually makes a lot of sense when you look into it.
With electus parrots the female is the red and purple one. The green is male. You made it sound like the female was green when she isn't? Maybe I heard it wrong but if not I am just telling you and everyone; female red male green😂
I was thinking the same thing 😂
Danica Hannaford
THANK YOU!
yeah, i caught that too, the male is the green one, maybe to blend in when he's bringing the female food when she's sitting on the eggs in a hollow
Yeah, my grandma used to breed parrots, and I remembered learning that when I was litttle..."But the green one was named Giuseppe... That's a boy's name XD"
Yall are taking this kids movie wayyyy too seriously...
People are into series of pop culture, let people enjoy and ponder things.
Hell no man
Yeah I mean just watch the movie and get on with ur life that’s the way they decided to make her different especially bc it’s for kids it has to be easy to tell them apart
I have two possible ways that her design makes sense:
1: Her colour and other features that seem to work as a disadvantage to her could be from a genetic bottleneck from the lack of diversity, which could have resulted in her deformed state.
2: As with birds, maybe they have different breeding “plumages” and that is why they look so different
I don’t know how accurate this could be, but it would be interesting to see your thoughts on this XD
her cloak works when she heats her scales, so she may heat them up in sunlight, giving her a mild cloaked hue, also she tends to appear in foggy conditions, look at the trailer also her smaller flaps and snout may be from her living in caves like the hidden world
@Soapy Dragon
I agree with your first argument.
Being hunted down to near-extinction, much like the Nightfury, would probably cause a genetic bottleneck at some point. That would also(probably) explain as to why she would choose Toothless as a mate. Being a subspecies would most likely still allow her to produce viable offspring with him. Animals crossbreeding in the wild, although rare, do happen.
sometimes they are even able to breed
Clouds are a thing and so are fog and snow
It’s so thay can make the yen and Yang symbol
Edit:Thx for the likes
Or an indoraptor Male and female or indoraptor and indominus rex
Technically, the white in the yin yang symbolises masculinity, and the black symbolises feminity. So Toothless would have to be white and the Light Fury would have to be black for the symbol to make sense-
But I get ya.
Random person telling DreamWorks that they made their Dragon wrong?, um okay 🤨
Young Pyt someone watching a video they obviously don’t agree with ? , Um okay 🤨
Random person? The person who wrote the article has a veterinarian and animation degree. She knows what she's talking about. Even then, with just basic knowledge on evolution, the light furys design makes absolutely no sense. Just DreamWorks trying to make the female helpless and soft again...
either way its too late to change the design 😂
Young Pyt that while Dragon is also not a night fury so this whole video is pointless
