I'm 5'6" and ride either my Hyperlite Murray 139 or 144. You could go either way. People think going bigger is a mistake bc then the board will feel like it's too much to handle but it's not really the case. It gives you more stability, usually less drag depending on the shape, and more pop. If you were coming to ride with me I'd put you on the 144

Shaun, I used to ride a hyperlite belmont 134 (im 5'8" and used to be about 160, closer to 180 now lol) and absolutely loved it (25 years ago). I got your signature board (same one you set up in this video) last year and find that I'm losing my edge quite a bit, particularly when approaching the wake heel side riding switch, which never seemed to happen with the shorter 134 and single deep center fins.... probably poor techinque but have any thoughts or tips? I want to love my new board!
What size you on now. 144 is what I’d suggest. Older board w center fins would def hold harder and you could size up to 1” fins to fins a similar ride but be patient and make sure you’re not trying to get too much angle too soon when figuring out the edging.
My niece is just learning to wakeboard. We have an old, 16+ O'Brien 138 demente (sp) with adjustable bindings. It feels really heavy. I'm assuming things are lighter now just like waterskis that's my sport (sorry). So I'm thinking of getting a newer light weight universal board for friends and family to learn on. What would you recommend? They watched your getting up video and got up first time behind a pontoon boat too.
Hi, I got those same boots but I have a different board. I have the 2020 hyperlite state board. There is a little gap between the heel and the board. Not big but it still makes a noise when I lean back on the board to put my heel down. Is this a problem? If so, do you know how to fix it?
Hey man I was wondering what is wrong with my stance if I really feel it in the side of my hip that is facing away from the boat. I was riding with it like that and it got very uncomfortable. Like your videos btw.
Thanks Shaun, when you give your board size recommendations in the comments are you basing it more off height or more off body weight? I’m 6 foot 160lbs (tall and skinny) lol. Would 139 vs 144 make a noticeable difference?
For sure don't ride a 139, way too small for your height. Go up to at least a 144 but even that is kinda small for a 6 footer. I'd go up to a 150 if I were you.
Was excited to get those bindings…It feels like the arch support is pushed way too far forward??? Been riding them hard for a couple months and they still hurt everytime
🤔 tough call bc everyone's foot is different. If they don't feel right you can try to heat them up but I don't think that will necessarily change the arch position.
Hey Shaun. I am 230 lbs, quite fit and love wakeboarding but feel a little limited because of my weight. What size board should I be riding and which one would you suggest?
Hey Shaun. Have you done any videos on the evolution of your board’s shape? I’d love to learn more about why you chose to make certain changes through the years to things like width, rocker, bottom shapes, etc). Super nerdy in know but what can I say, I love nerding out.
Hi Shaun me and my son really want to get into wakeboarding I would love too but I’m a bit on the bigger side weighing 274 lbs @5’11. Do you think I’ll be able to do it and if so what board would you recommend for a beginner? I started with a board that was passed down by the person I bought my boat from it’s a hydro slide black widow 142cm only tried about 3 tries on the lake and thought I would just watch more of your videos
Thanks for stoppin by and love to hear that you're looking to get on the water. That 142 is too small for you. Hyperlite makes my board in a 150 so for sure go up to that. If you're looking to save a few bucks you can find my board in previous years and it's a different graphic but the same shape since 2015 bc it's been proven to be a very user friendly shape.
Hi Shaun! Just got your board in a 144 with the Team X bindings, and I'm super excited to try it out this season! This video was super helpful in finding a comfortable stance to start. Quick question. The bindings state they are heat moldable. Do you heat mold your bindings personally? If so, do you have a video on that or any recommendations? Thanks, and keep up the great videos, they're super helpful!!
I honestly haven't done it other than once. I just used a blowdryer and got em pretty warm. Used socks so it wasn't uncomfortable and kept em on for about 30 minutes. This isn't necessarily Hyperlite's recommendation on heat molding, only my suggestion
@@Shaun.Murray Got it, thanks! I searched for a Hyperlite video or instructions on how to heat mold Hyperlite bindings but couldn't find anything specifically from them. I did find a video that used the hair dryer method for a different brand, so I'll give that a go. Thanks again!
Hard to say Drew bc everyone's foot is different in shape. If you go up and it's too big you can always add a little thin insole to fill the gap but it's harder to create more space. BUT, boots do tend to stretch out.
Not sure where I say that so if you can send the timecode of approx where that is, that would be great. Want to know what you're seeing. Either way, it's not really a dominant foot in front or back bc it can change from one thing to the next. I wakeboard and do most board sports left foot in front but slalom ski right foot in front. Parks Bonifay surfs left foot forward but wakeboards right foot forward. Here's an analogy that can help you decide. If you were to slide in socks on tile, which foot would you want in front? Set your wakeboard up symmetrically so you can try one way and then the other. If you can't decide, awesome! That's a great problem to have bc you'll be able to add that many more tricks with ease. Hope this helps!
Great video. I have my wife on a CWB setup and she always gets pressure on the outside of her front foot. However those bindings don't have lots of angle adjustment and are all ready all the way ducked out. Also the board has too wide of a stance for her even on the inner inserts. She is 5'3" and weighs 110 lbs. She doesn't do much for jumping but really enjoys cruising around. Can you recommend a board with not so wide stance? Her board now is 136cm. We are 40+ age and I wanted to go as big as she felt comfortable to make it easy on the arms. Was thinking 138cm. Any suggestions?
Check out the Hyperlite Prism 139. Could go to the 134 but I'd step up to the bigger one. It's the Murray shape but w a ladies graphic. Could get the Murray 139 if she likes the graphics better 😃 .
Hey Shaun, love watching all your videos for ideas and techniques as a beginner rider. I have been riding for just over a year now and have played around with my stance as my ankles were starting to hurt trying new tricks. Now I find when cutting into the wake heel side my back foot slides out and feels disconnected from the water. I ride your 2021 pro board at about 14-15 degrees and have tried tail heavy and neutral. I dont think my technique has changed but it was a frustrating end to the summer for me here in Australia. Any advice to try? ✌️
Common thing Ben. Usually comes from trying to get too much angle too soon. Cut out wide, flatten off, wait for the boat to catch up, then begin your cut in. Usually slowing things down can help a lot. Hard to tell though without seeing what you're doing. This is going to sound like a salesman pitch but take it for what it's worth. There's an app called Givego that you can upload clips for me to see and I can give you voice over recorded tips. No pressure whatsoever, just a way to show me exactly what you're talking about.
I am 5'6 ish and 135 to 140lb i just picked up the 2022 murray board but i got the 134. I havent used it yet i can probably swap it still for the 139. Do you think i should? Or will the 134 be just fine? I also have a 140 rusty and that feels slightly big to me.
Hi Shaun, First of all, Thanks for your video's it helped me a lot with beginning and practice and working on my basics!!! I've got a question, normaly I ride behind my boat, regular..... Now last time I went to the cable park for the first time.... after a few time I was able to take off.... but the guys there told me to ride goofy (especialy for takeoff)... but my dominant foot is right.... so I rode goofy/switched..... it feld a bit akward in the beginnening but got used to it.... but still it feels unatural to me when steering...... The cable park goes clockwise.... What would you advice for next time? Regards Dennis
Hello Shaun I just went wakeboarding for my first Time I picked up a hyper light RLITE 145 mm board I’m 5’ 10 “about 210 pounds. is this the right size board for my build?
Yes I have watched that video many times. I got my board at end of summer so didn't get to get on lake but 3 times before it got cold. I will continue to watch your videos and see what happens. I have a short video how can I send it to you ? Maybe you could tell me if I am disconnecting. Thank you for taking time to answer my message 😊

Hey Shaun I'm 205 lbs 6ft. I've been riding the Byerly142 older board with the bottle neck looking sides for years now. What size you think on your board? I also had my acl replaced 3 yeas ago in my knee. You know riders that have ridden since having such a surgery? Odd question I'm jonsin to get back in the saddle.
Wes, I had my acl, mcl, pcl and meniscus blown all at once. Wakeskating actually. I'm still going for it 😃 I'd suggest for my 150 for sure. I really think you're enjoy the upgrade. ✌️
Thanks, Shaun for the tips, especially the part about if you feel pressure on the outside or inside. My nephews, who I ride with, are very "duck footed." It does NOT feel comfortable at all to ride after them. Now I have a better grip on what needs to be done. I'm still recovering from Ramsey-Hunt, and it's not any better, which is disappointing. The vertigo is intense, especially if I get bounced around or if I can't focus with my eyes. Even so, I'm determined to ride my brand new, never used Shawn Murray 144 once the lake warms up enough in a few weeks. Worst case, I fall and the kids laugh at me, right? If it doesn't go well, I'm going to suck it up and get vestibular physical therapy. Thanks again for the tips and the reasons behing them!
Thanks, Shawn, I really appreciate your encouragement. I think it's time for me to start jogging, which makes the world flip upside down. (Which is really crazy to experience- my vision literally flips upside down at times!) If I can get used to doing that in the next few weeks, I should be able to ride on some level
Shaun....I met you at Canyon Lake in So. Calif about 10 or 15 years ago. We went out in the Hyperlite rep's (Greg, I think) green wakeboard boat, that had about 4000 pounds of ballast, plus the 12 or 14 people from various dealerships. You showed me how to wakesurf....and I got it....had a lot of fun after that. Now the question: I have a Hyperlite Premier 140 with Option 2 bindings on it. I can't figure out if the bindings can be adjusted for a bigger foot. I wear size 8 mens. Is there a way to open these up to a 10 or 12? I think it is a large, as I saw a used set of large that fit 8-10. I can't find anything on these bindings. a friend of mine wants to use the board, and he's a 12.
Good to hear from you and def has been a while since I was last at Canyon, but a great spot! Open toe bindings will usually have a size range of about 4 sizes. Pretty sure the Option 2 you're referring to was the strap on some of my Hyperlite bindings from back a ways and won't necessarily fit a 4 size difference range. Click this link to see something newer and how the sizing can work out. Not to be a salesman but can show you what can fit into what. www.hyperlite.com/product/wakeboard-boots-team
Hey Shaun, just getting back into wakeboarding after not riding much. My gear is circa 2000 and I've always felt my boards were heavy and bindings too tight. Looks like there's been a lot of advances since then and just wondering what you'd recommend for a 6'2" 185lb guy like me. I'm 38 and started riding at 12 on a Skurfer 🤣 I was never able to bust big tricks but can comfortably clear the wake and do surface 180s and jump 180s, I definitely hit a plateau. I wish these videos were around when I was a teenager!!! PS I used to follow you back in the day whenever I could catch a competition on TV, pretty sweet you're still into it ✌️🤟🤘
Thanks for following the fun over the years! You should step up to the Murray 150. For sure things have advanced and you'll notice a difference in the weight.
Awesome as always, Shaun! I am 5'11 and weigh 155 and I'm finally going to upgrade to a Murray pro from my 2003 Hyperlite Danny Half 135 (weighs a ton!) I've been riding for 20 years. My two sons are 6'0" and 145 lbs. I'm debating between 144 and 150. Thoughts?
i’m 5’11” 150 lbs and have the murray 139 and 150. my personal favorite is the 150. i feel like it has more pop/landings are easier. the only downside is our boots on the 150 are quite a bit too big on me so i have to tighten them a lot and they get loose easy. i like riding the 139 sometimes. i feel like i can get on a lot harder of an edge and that’s typically what i’ll try my new tricks on. it is slightly easier to flip/spin with. but once i learn it i can immediately hop on the 150 with no problems. hopefully this helps your decision!
Hi Shaun, I am with 137lbs and 5'6. My old boards were 136 and 138, middle stance, 15 degree. My new Riot is 141, shall I do my 1st set also in the middle or shall I start with the narrow stance which would mean the same feet distance as the middle stance with my old stuff? Highly appreciate all your vids and recommendations 👌

Hey Sean. I've been watching your wakeboarding videos since I started three years ago at age 46. I'm definitely a fan. I'm not jumping yet but I am doing the single wake jump 180*. My wife and I are planning to come do a session with you this summer if there are any open slots. Hopefully you are not already booked. We will be flying in from Fort Worth. I also wanted to ask a question about how to get a bigger wake with a boat that does not have ballasts. I've put sacks of concrete in the back storage and it helps a little but not enough. It is an 89 Supra mint condition. Originally a slolum boat. Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for all you do.

Set your wakeboard up symmetrically so you can try one way and then the other. If you can't decide, awesome! That's a great problem to have bc you'll be able to add that many more tricks with ease. Hope this helps!
@@Shaun.Murray it was another video, I will find it and comment. It was something like whatever foot you kick a ball with, put that foot to the back.
@@Shaun.Murray Thanks, really appreciate the feedback. Blessings this Easter! 🙏
Did you ever like the liquid force squirt?
Honestly never rode it but it was a good example of surface area being the important thing. Went shorter but was wider
Hmmm 🤔 this is helpful thank you
Hi Shaun,
First of all, Thanks for your video's it helped me a lot with beginning and practice and working on my basics!!!
In my opinion you shouldn't ride according to the cable direction but to what foot in front feels best to you.
Hello Shaun I just went wakeboarding for my first Time I picked up a hyper light RLITE 145 mm board
I’m 5’ 10 “about 210 pounds. is this the right size board for my build?
Yep, sounds like you got on the right size Travis
Trying hard to get off wake but not getting any height. Any help would be appreciated
Arthur, have you seen this one? th-cam.com/video/NerZbJC_V1I/w-d-xo.html
just learning to wake board at 56 !! When I ride seems that my back knee is staying bent what do I need to do to help that
You might be disconnecting at the hips. Have you seen this video? th-cam.com/video/eSJPitLMRY8/w-d-xo.html
@@amandawoodcock4224 If you're able to download the Givego app , I can watch and voiceover record my thoughts on what you're doing correctly and what you can do to improve things. www.givego.io/
@@Shaun.Murray Thank You Shaun . I have android phone so it put me on waiting list for that app. So will send if it let's me load it. I really appreciate you helping. I watch all your videos thats how I learned how to even get up on my board . Thanks again ,hope you have awsome day !!!
What’s your recommendation on your board size for 6ft 175lb? I’m getting conflicting info from the internet.
Murray 144 would be a little on the small side but could pull it off. I'd suggest giving the 150 a try. Nearly everyone who steps up enjoys it!
Just got a Murray 150! Wish me luck
I'm still going for it 😃
I'd suggest for my 150 for sure.
Take'r easy and just keep it cruisy for a while. Hopefully with a better/more comfortable stance as well! Hope you're healing up!

Glad I could help answer your question! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
PS I used to follow you back in the day whenever I could catch a competition on TV, pretty sweet you're still into it ✌️🤟🤘
Lol, was just researching the main board I've been riding, it's a Hyperlite Belmont, designed by you in 2001!
Thanks for following the fun over the years! You should step up to the Murray 150. For sure things have advanced and you'll notice a difference in the weight.
Belmont is my grandfather's and my dad's first name, and my middle name
@@Shaun.Murray that's awesome, I had no idea! That a cool tribute, I will remember that everytime I ride it now :)
@@samuelridesbikes2361Thanks! I ended up splitting the difference and went with the 144. I think it will work great for me. Thanks for the feedback!
Try narrow at first and see how it feels. Then go out to middle. If that's too wide maybe consider the tail heavy stance I go with. All personal pref
Do you ride with same angle snowboarding?
Actually tail heavy as well but back foot slightly less angle
Hi, im into wakeboard again after a short break of 20 years and my best board then was youre pro model 😂 My question is, can i ride the 139, im 176 pounds, 5,9. Behind a small boat/wake? From Sweden with love❤
Can ride the 139 but I’d for sure suggest sizing up to the Murray 144

thanks, been watching old videos i bought as a teen around -98 feturing you 😀
Im also intrested in the state 2.0, whats the main differnce?
Now i remember, i was riding the Bellmont from 2001. It was my absolut favourite board 😀 I loved that floaty and playfull feel. Will i get that of i buy youre pro board from this or last year?
Thanks in advanced 🙏
Hey Shaun. Good day, man. I'm around 180lbs and 5' 8"
I am currently on an old school 140 premier. Would you recommend your 139 or 144. God Bless man🙏🏻🤙🏻
Also, will you be going to Wakewell conference?!
I'd step up to the 144. Pretty sure you'll really dig it. 139 would be too small in my opinion. Aiming to connect for a half day w the conf!
Thanks man 🤙🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!
Hi Shaun we are 2 Canadians women big fans of your channel you got us hooked on wakeboarding, would it be possible to hire you for 3 days private boat lessons for just us 2? We will travel to Orlando any time in June thanks
Love that y'all are hooked! I don't have any more time this summer for lessons but a couple days might become available in late August. Sorry don't have better news for now. Thanks for watching!

Why is there a crease in the box?
I actually explain that in the video if you didn't happen to catch it
Hi Shaun!
Sup Jerr?!
Thanks for watching Greg and awesome to hear you and your wife are getting on the water. I'll be in your area for the Nautique Regatta June 7-9. Go to Nautique.com and click on events to see some of the details for that event. It's free for Nautique owners but still others can join to check out the new Nautique lineup in person and get some demo rides. You can also go to my website www.shaunmurray.com and click contact to find out how to connect with me here in Orlando or when I travel.
Hey man!
K dawg!
Hi Shaun, any preview of the 2023 model? I'm 5.75 ft and 220 lbs, what size do you recommend for me? Does this board create a good pop on a small size wake (I/O 19ft boat) Thanks!
2023?! Not quite yet Gunther. Patience grasshopper. I suggest the 144 and with the extra surface area, you'll find it gets good pop even with a small wake. For sure need to make sure you're using some good techniques like th-cam.com/video/NerZbJC_V1I/w-d-xo.html
