LOL i knew what was coming next when you said "we got no engines". good informative video, seeing that black FD makes me excited to drive mine once the snow is all gone here in canada.
Probably the worst thing to do? But we rebuilt a rx7 with a dented rotor.. Just shaved the groove to clearance the apex seal 🥴 but its survived many track drift events in boost
No doubt you will piece together a great rebuild video once all the new parts arrive, but if you could do a second video that shows the full assembly of all the ancillary gear, that would also be great… inlet manifolds, turbo manifold, oil injection, oil pan sealing, all the gaskets etc…
Unfortunate outcome, but really what was the owner thinking driving this car in boost untuned??? This engine probably would have had a long happy life if it was tuned. Let this be a lesson for the owner... however I can think of many better ways to blow $5-$10k.
For sure man!! I have hurt engines and done things wrong before and it's just best to learn from it and move forward. It won't happen again thats for sure!!
My FB 12A ran up to 350k miles until a rear rotor apex sealer broke off and got buried in the rotor, I have not opened it but by endoscopy you can see the scratched housing and the Apex buried in the rotor, the engine still starts on a single rotor with oil in the carb. I want to repair it but I think it is a better option to buy another engine. What do you recommend me?
Having the car tuned correctly is extremely important for a reliable rotary. Good fuel, good oil and a little mechanical sympathy help too. In terms of revving rotaries, just because they can rev over 6500 rpm doesnt mean you should. 6000rpm is a great place to shift. Just my opinion 🤷
This video was sweet cause I'm in the process myself on irons with wear like that would you be okay having them resurfaced and then reusing them because mine is similar
question did your buddy run an OMP with the motor? i’m asking because I’m running the same seals on my block which is a brand new engine I don’t want to replace housings couple thousand later lol
@@RADPotential This owner made some bad decisions, but wouldn't this situation have killed any turbocharged rotary and not just an FD? You can kill piston engines by driving on an untuned map, especially using an aftermarket ECU without engine protection features. For less than the cost of a new Mazda engine, the owner could have bought and configured an ECU that can cut fuel if there's overboost or the wideband shows a lean reading or fuel pressure is too low. Haltech and Link seem to be the common options lately, Adaptronic was a fad with good advertising but not enough reliability to stick around. I have AEM and it works well for me but I know it's not a popular solution for rotary engines.
Super annoying about the Engine! Do you have a video about replacing front wheel bearings on an FB? Did a quick search and couldn't find one, would love to see a radformational! As always, great content!
@@RADPotential Awesome, Looking forward to it! The forums just consist of people arguing over whether or not you need to set the preset the way the service manual states or if you just hammer them in hahaha
I’m going to sound like a KMR comercial, but why don’t you just lap the irons (and WPC treat them 😄)? Seriously… and out of curiosity… why is that not an option here? And holy sh!t, I didn’t know you can still get a new REW from Mazda!
Lapping and treating them is for sure an option, these irons aren't junk junk by any means. That process takes a lot of time and effort and it would be cheaper/more efficient to find a new used set or just go for the new engine. They will go on the shelf to be used again. Trying to get something done in a month is hard when it would take 2 or 3 weeks to get that done. Vs new parts show up a week or 2 later and the risk is fully eliminated
There’s a Vargas brothers/TommyFYeah combo series of videos where Tommy buys a new 13b from Mazda, and the Vargas bros break the engine down to show what you get when you buy a brand new one from Mazda directly. And it ain’t all good.
I have 0 care for rotary's but did you guys see that thumbnail? The fd rx7 is the most beautiful car
Long cool woman in a black dress right there

Skimping on a tune = more money spent on rebuilds.
100 percent correct. A properly tuned Fd engine will last. A rotary car that is not tuned properly is a ticking time bomb for sure.
Wish we had some roads like your 8 was on in Memphis

lAre the irons able to be lapped to bring them back into spec? Ive seen a few videos online showing lapping of the irons to remove step wear .
Yes they are able to be re surfaced. They aren't completely junk, but not ideal for the situation I'm in

I worried about that with mine but then I found paperwork from Mazdatrix in California. Back in 2015 the previous owner sent it to them for a rebuild.
Yeah, new engine, keep the lightened rotors for further down the line.
Could clean the ports and send the irons to chips they resurface nitride them and then resurface again so the step wear is within a .001 tolerance
Yea for sure. I dont think the irons are completely junk, but they will need some work for sure!

Edit. Rev limit is for turbo mild port engines. Other variations can have different limits.

What was that follow cam setup at the end? Nice Gran Turismo action.

No OMP he is premix only
That was a 'schoolboy' error, giving a freshly rebuilt rotary back to it's owner with it not being set up properly.....
Does Mazda USA sell new engines? what I mean is, I'm in Europe... I have not heard that being available here...
Dude your a rotary mechanic if u know how to do all that u have to do what u got to do love the content wish u lived in Florida
Oops. Can you say..money pit.
Big one FD= Financial Disaster!

I dont think I have a video on it. But I have some experience there lol. I'll add it to the list. May be a bit before I get to it. 3 or 4 weeks maybe

Go k24 and beat the crap out of it also parts are very cheap rotary is a waste of money but hey they sound amazing.

@@RADPotential do they just have the 13b or can you get a 20b?
13b REW and I think reman renesis engines
@@RADPotential that is very cool, can you get them online or do you have to go to a dealership? Thanks for you time
