I think I speak for many people when I say what an inspiration you have been and continue to be for our own small businesses! So nostalgic to see your journey and how far you've come!! I definitely think my best investment has been the Silhouette!! It's made cutting so much easier than my previous Cricut meaning less waste with cutting errors. I really appreciate how transparent you are with all of your gear and what it takes to build it up, and also all the times it goes wrong sometimes, cause machines sure are finicky things at the worst times :')

I like to scroll back to the first videos of people I follow to see how they started out and I watched some of yours as well already.
I love that you kept them up because it shows that everyone starts little.
Most people unfortunately remove their old videos once they make higher quality videos. That's a pity, I think there is no shame in showing imperfection. 😘

The Ipad Mini definitely changed the game for me, I use to struggle with the pro I had because the screen was so big it wasn't easy to move around with. But since I've gotten the mini I can go anywhere and I do! I illustrate everywhere. The second big game changer was my Canon Pixma Pro 100. I print all my stickers, prints and button designs with it. And I can always find inexpensive ink for it, so that has changed everything for my business.

Honestly it's been awhile since I've been able to rewatch your videos. I've since started my own Etsy shop and honestly finally got to upgrade to acrylic keychains and pins, but watching your journey has kept me motivated for the two years I've done this!

My partner and I watch all your videos since the pandemic hit (I was following you even earlier than that!) and it's amazing how much you've grown! Your energy is great and inspired us to start our own business as well. Although there are high and lows, lots of mistakes and thousands of things to learn, it's great to have people like you that shows that, with the right energy and pushing forward, it can be done 🥰🥰 Our best investment has been our Eco Tank as well. We bought one of the cheapest ones but oh my god, the quality on these printers is AMAZING. We had a canon iP8750 before and it was impossible to get the right colours plus the images would never look crisp. We're still starting and buying all our supplies little by little but this was definitely a game-changer!

The turning point in my art was investing in a Glowforge laser cutting machine. I can now take my 2D art and create them into 3D works of art. Before I was making paper architecture designs to fit with my wooden doll scale. Now I can make 3D wood architectural builds. I like how you stressed that you didn’t start off with all of these machines to help grow your business. I also started with just one Cricut machine. Watching your journey helped me grow my small business. Thank you for all that you share with us. Your videos apply to many different aspects of the art community and small businesses. ❤️❤️❤️

I'm sort of new following you (less than a year) and have enjoyed watching your small business journey! I binged watched your videos when I found you and I'm all caught up! Thank you so much for sharing what you've done with your business! I'm also an artist that sell prints and sublimated products with my art. I'd say that my best purchase was my Canon Pixma Pro-100 for my prints and greeting cards back in late 2018. I just wished the ink cartridges weren't that expensive, but that's the cost of selling quality prints. When that printer dies, I'm going to invest on a printer with pigment inks, maybe will switch to an Epson. My other best investments were my sublimation printer and my professional George Knight 16x20 heat press. I started with a crappy heat press that had cold spots, so my items weren't sublimated correctly. I could've saved a little over $500 had I not bought that crappy one and got the professional one in the first place. Oh well, live and learn 😝. I also have a Silhouette Cameo that I originally bought in 2016 for my card-making hobby but now only use it to make labels for my packaging. I was looking into making my own stickers but that's not something in the works at this moment, as I still have to do some research on sticker papers and a good printer (my Canon doesn't like printing on sticker papers). Sorry for the long comment. Love everything you do!

I’ve only been following you for about a year but it’s been lovely watching your business grow. My best buys so far were a new phone, laptop and adobe, so quite similar to yours. It does cost a lot up front but having technology that isn’t super slow really saves time in the long run 😊

I really have loved watching your business grow over the years. It really inspired me to keep reinvesting back into my business. My top three items would be my iPad, MacBook Air & my silhouette cameo. I have just invested in an ecotank that I’ve converted into a sublimation printer as well as a larger heat press and mug press.

I remember following you since 2020.u best purchases as a small biz is Samsung Galaxy cell and tablet. They take amazing photos and video. I upgraded to a vivitar 4K camcorder with a swing out screen that rotates 360 degrees. I would highly recommend getting a external hard drive of 500 gb. Videos take a lot of space and I had to delete a lot of them to keep using my cell. In my cell I have 256 gb as well on my tablet. Both devices I am able to edit photos and vids with great free apps. Including a digital art sketchbook. I upgraded to a cricut in 2021. Using the snake for all device mounting so I can do tutorials and having a table tripod with a cell mount and a larger tripod with camera and tablet mounts. I used a Canon PIXMA printer starting out then went to a TS3520.
If you are starting out, just get started and put yourself out there. Slowly invest after 7-8 months to a year. Otherwise it costs $2500 or more depending what you want to do to get most everything at once.
I used to print my stickers on sticker paper or vinyl sheets and cut them out by hand. They still sold well.
Good luck on everyone's ventures. Tysm Kat for the info! Oh my has your biz grown!

Hi Katherine, I really enjoy your videos! As for me, there would be no small business without my iPad. It was used because that's what I could afford, but it is a little workhorse as you said and not only did it pay abundantly for itself, but also it allowed me to learn so much and develop my style much more efficiently than paper and pencil ever could!

Also, I responding to Clients on it. :) 2nd would be the 3D printer. Still getting the hang of it and need to learn more about making my own files but it's already put me in the green. :)

I started watching when you were in that little studio. Fun clips! I started on a really old clunky handmedown MacBook. It did not play well with my Silhouette Cameo so I put the Cameo up and did not use it for maybe 2 years. I would say buying my iMac was the best purchase, it changed what I was able to do. That’s when I started growing.

I have had iPads since around 2011. When they came out with the Pro, I got one immediately and never regretted it. Last year, I got a mini and it’s been wonderful for drawing on the go. I now have TWO Apple Pencils (technically, three, because I still have the original Pencil that I had to plug into my first iPad Pro). I have one for my Pro and one for my mini. Very handy so I don’t have to keep moving one back and forth between the two iPads.
    DEFINITELY worth the price!
I also have the iPhone 12 Pro Max! And I have an EcoTank printer, but it got infested with bugs and ruined when I left it at a family member’s house for a while. I’ll be getting another one very soon!

  • @bethn2836

My best business investment was for sure my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I got them refurnished so I was able to save a ton of money. But with them I’m able to run almost my entire Etsy business and also my fine art career. I can manage orders, talk with customers, design products, edit product photos and art scans, and display reference photos. And I can watch TH-cam while I work. 🤣

I bought a sublimation printer and heat press on fb marketplace and got a bargain! Another small business was upgrading all their kit and they didn't have space to keep this older stuff. Your journey is similar to mine with sublimation and sticker cutters etc. Hands down my 2 best investments were my iPad Pro (though hubby bought that for me for Xmas 2016) and my flat bed heat press. This is super fun just to watch the grow of your business and the upgrading that you have done. I defiantly think getting my 2017 iPad Pro was the best thing that I could have gotten myself when I started to pursue illustration... I don't have a business yet (its in the works) but get better with digital illustration lead me to leave my job as an administrator to get hired as an illustrator which really helped me grow artistically. I love watching you videos even the past ones cause if has really helped inform me of art biz life and vlogging (which I kinda want to try).

I wonder if you could tell me what type of paper you use (vinyl, waterproof, sticker paper, and the thickness), and what cricket settings you use. I'm a candle and wax melt maker, best investment so far has to be my wax melter, I used to melt each pot for a single scent using double boiler method in my kitchen, so time-consuming! Now i bulk melt wax with my melter and dispense into different pots for each scent!
Love your vlogs, i found your youtube within theblast year and have pretty much binge watched your videos, been amazing to see you develop and grow all while encouraging others to follow their dreams too x

I really want to say thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I think since the blow up of social media lots of creators and people just starting out feel the need to buy the newest most expensive thing in order to be able to reach goals quicker and that's simply not true. And because many creators don't show the "bad" sides of creating the viewers typically think you have to have the best of everything in order to start. So thank you for shedding some light that you can literally start from scratch and build your way up. I've been following you since around the pandemic time, so I've seen your business grow from the past 2+ years and I've always loved how you've done everything and always feel so inspired watching your videos because of how sweet and transparent you've been about your process.

I’m curious, how do you find the difference in printing quality from the xp960 to the eco tanks? Are they as smooth and vibrant as the 960s? Or are they grainy? I’m looking to swap but I’m scared the print quality won’t be up to par :(

I always loved making art, but kindof stopped doing it because it took a lot of time. But now that I purchased my iPad ive gotten back into it as it's just so convenient! Watching a show on the couch? Just quickly grab my ipad so I can draw in the mean time^^ I've learnt so much about procreate already that i felt comfortable enough to open a (very) small etsy shop and its thanks to creators like yourself! You make art something fun and the way you look at your own art takes away so much of my internal pressure to make something good. You just really seem to enjoy your art even if an individual piece is not your favourite, if that makes sense. Big thank you and I wish you and the Katnipp team another wonderful year!

My best investment is my Cricut Maker 3 & just recently, my Epson ET printer for sublimation. And a hand held heat press. Like you, I bought what I could afford. Oh and my iPad for sure. I too do all my illustrations on it even though I have a great tablet. I love the convenience of the iPad. I can illustrate anywhere.
I just love your VLOGS. I love how you don’t gatekeep. I have learned a lot from you and am so inspired by you. You keep me motivated, so thank you.

Catherine!!! You are such an inspiration. I have loved watching you grow your business for a long time, it's really does motivate me to keep pursuing my dreams of having my own small business. 🥰 I think for me, my best investment has been my iPad. I draw almost every day for the last 3 years, and I love it. I can create new products anywhere, there are fun brushes to experiment with, and plus you have all the colors you need! Anyways, keep doing your thing! You are amazing!

Catherine Cricut now has a Beta version you can use they increased the print and cut area!!! Its been something I wanted for years. I use a silhouette and a cricut. Cricut machines are made so much better than silhouette it is just silhouette software does so much but for a mac user there is so many problems with silhouette program so I am glad to see cricut stepping up the game because it is so much better of a machine. I also design alot in silhouette and export to use on the cricut which is nice since silhouette program has so much bugs when I go to print and cut. Love this video!

Is it the software that is beta or a new machine? I have a Maker3 and would love to be able to cut 8.5” x 11”.

You can do that without the software simply look up cricut cutting hacks and get some masking/painters tape.
