  • In this market vlog we have a little of everything - crochet, hail, a baby saying POOP, small business drama 👀
    This was my 5th ever market and even though it wasn’t the busiest market I’ve been to, I’m not mad at my results!
    How did you like the ending? Was it cringe? I had a good time 😂

    I’m from Deep South Texas and I’ve done 11 markets in 6 months and I gotta say more than 80% are resellers of mass produced items ☹️ but I feel as a crocheter that makes everything handmade I get so many compliments and I really feel the appreciation of my craft.

      Holy moly, that’s a lot of markets and a LOT of mass produced sellers. I’m so glad your work is being appreciated! You must do good work and I bet it’s refreshing to see something handmade

    Hey that’s my face 😂 I always love when that happens. Thanks for the shout out. I’m glad you like my cactuses. I hope you make some!
    I wondered if that other crocheter was buying that stuff from temu or something. I wasn’t gonna say it but I see others in the comments speculating. They maybe do make them but dang she had a lot!
    I hate going to markets with only resellers. Much prefer handmade. I wish places would do handmade only.

      Man I would hate to jump to conclusions but other people are saying they’ve run into that same scenario. If I ever see the vendor at another event I will make sure to ask if the items are made by her. I just assumed they were and was giving her a ton of compliments lol

    I give my daughters one of the plushies I’ve made for them and their own crochet hooks. They also sometimes hold my hooks and I put my hand on top of theirs and they “help” me crochet. One of them also is really into helping me stuff my plushies. They are 20 months!

    Aloha from Hawaii 🌴 It depends on the promoter. Here in Hawaii alot of fairs are handmade only. You have to show them,what you're selling. Than you get approved. Personally if i go to a craft fair i ONLY buy handmade.

    I’m always so impressed by your creativity and generous spirit. That banana keychain would have taken me at least two hours to do. I have no idea how she can make so many, and I would have also bought one!
    I was wondering, would share how long your lavenders are? Mine are 12 inches and keep falling out of a variety of vases.
    I love that you are standing firm on a reasonable price and that some things just take too long to be marketable.

    • @CatCakeCrochet
      @CatCakeCrochet  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The stems are 16 inches long and the flower portion on mine is 9 inches. Are they falling out because the stem is thin so they’re floppy?
      I rave about these thick stems I love from Amazon, they’re sturdy but you can still bend them. On some of the bouquets I cut the stems to make the flowers have different heights and I tell customers they can use wire cutters to trim the stem and then hot glue or superglue the yarn down.
      These are the stems I use (the link is associated with an Amazon storefront I am working on so please feel free to close the window and search the stems again if that makes you uncomfortable)

    Hey there from just north of Edmonton Alberta. I run a market in Edmonton and I always check the vendors products before letting them into the event to make sure that they have less than 20% is not handmade. As a crochet I refuse to do markets that allow mass produced or resellers or MLMS.

    I also love having flowers at all of my markets. And I do $10 each or buy 4 get 1 free. I only do simple flowers so it’s worth it. I do sunflowers (smaller version), lavender, rose, carnations, forget me nots, daisies, and tulips. I’ve made a bunch right when I picked up crocheting again and I haven’t sold them all yet, but I find that this new pricing has been working well for me! I Definitely understand not making the more difficult flowers with lots of pieces because it’s definitely not worth it!

    I’ve sold at strictly crafters shows but also I’ve sold at shows that were open to all vendors. It depends on the regulations of the event sponsors. If there are booths unclaimed by crafters, some promoters will allow in non craft vendors. It’s never really affected my sales but I love the strictly crafters shows best. I think you are doing great!

    Yes, I think you’ll be able to stand out more if you have 100% handmade items! people were so shocked that they could take a look around at my table and appreciate that every single item is handmade. Because I think they know that not everything is handmade at the other booths, if that is the case. Experienced craft show goers might be able to tell the difference a little more than newer people. But we aren’t knocking everybody who’s trying to run their own small business. I think it becomes questionable if people are marketing as handmade and it’s really not..

    I’ve done a few craft shows with my jewelry. I make bead woven jewelry and I’ve picked up crochet just this year. Our craft shows here in west Michigan are only hand crafted items. The contracts are very clear on that point. I’ve seen show organizers walkup to a booth and tell them they have to put away their imported /factory made items. They then go around to the other vendors and apologize and tell them that vendor will not be invited back. I already have anxiety and conflict like that sets me on edge. I guess I don’t understand why people can’t follow rules. Oh well. Also. Good point about buying used yarn. You never know if it will smell like cigarettes or a gross basement.

    Girl you literally made me laugh out loud with that ending 🤣
    Also I think it’s normal to be frustrated when people are selling mass produced stuff at a handmade market. I don’t care so much about cool clothing or just like unique stuff. But MLM’s and just big ole reseller booths that you can feel the lack of passion and creativity I don’t particularly like seeing at craft fairs as a vendor or a shopper. I think there’s a place for everyone but handmade markets should be just that, handmade. And I’ve attended many markets that wouldn’t allow anyone to sell non handmade items with their handmade items. So you couldn’t do both. Every market is different, every coordinator is different and runs things differently. I just feel like you never really know what you’re gonna get or what is normal and not normal lol. Ultimately it’s the organizers job to say what can and can’t be sold but if I was running a handmade market I would for sure make it a rule you have to only sell handmade items and it would be juried and no similar booths would be anywhere near each other. That’s just because I know what it feels like to be a vendor myself but many coordinators do not.

    • @CatCakeCrochet
      @CatCakeCrochet  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LOL I’m glad it made you laugh, I felt so cool pretending to be you 😎
      I definitely don’t remember seeing a ton of MLMs or the carnival toy people at this craft fair before, now that I think back on it, I feel bad for the other vendor, and I kind of wish that I had spoken up with them. They were just trying to get support to go talk to the coordinator and I was too chicken ☹️

    My son is almost 2 and what I've done since he started showing an interest in my yarn and hooks is give him my 20mm hook and a skein of big fluffy blanket yarn and let him sit down and "crochet" with me. Each time I give him the same hook and same yarn (ones I don't use much or I'm not worried he's gonna mess it up or anything because it's so big). It helps a lot but sometimes he does still try and "crochet" what I'm working on lol I just have to tell him to make me something with his instead.

      I believe for the two lobsters they used at least one whole skein, but I’m not 100% certain because I used part of a half used skein and half of a brand new one.
      If you try the pattern I forgot to mention in the video that the instructions do not not to keep the claws positioned so the smaller portion is facing inward (towards the lobsters head) and I had to go back and redo part of the arm because I had 2 claws facing outwards lol

    My son was about 18 months or so when I started crocheting, he was always getting into my yarn and hooks so finally I took him to the craft store and made a big deal about getting him a hook and when we got home I gave him a small stretch of yarn with a few chains on it and he would sit on the couch next to me and “crochet” while I crocheted. After a few times it lost its magic to him. Now he will occasionally ask if he can crochet with me but I think now as long as he gets something every so often he’s happy 🤪
