additional info: The proper name of it was the HORI Face Cover Case. Seems to cover the same pros and cons as the Nerf PSP case you covered, though not as beefy as the Nerf. It helped making it very pocketable.
The PSP go has one and it sucks almost just as bad, the Switch lite has an official flip cover which is so good i wanna buy more than 1, wish every console had one just like it. Especially the Vita since they're very similar, i guess desgining around the back touch pad is a design challenge.
That is NOT the way they want you to use that. You are not supposed to play while the VITA is in that case, or in any case. You can use the case as a stand for watching videos or playing with a controller (mods required), and when you want to play you take the vita out. I've had that case for 12 years now and not even once has the tought of playing while the vita was in the case ever crossed my mind.

Been a big fan of the clam-shell case that released around the same time (I’m guessing)

i keep my vita in a soft sleeve, because its quick to take out and the whole thing still fits in my pocket
I got one, but it's starting to fall apart and I've had it for a few months
Just 3D print one they got good designs similar to an Xbox controller
I really just use a cheap sleeve i got from aliexpress
that case sucks because it does not protect the sides i never buy the offical or use them on my products i just leave them in the boxes
The Vita Vault Case made by Insignia was actually good, I have one and it really protects it from drops.
