Skull and Bones (the 10 year Ubisoft original) is an unbelievable missed opportunity. With a near perfect conceptual foundation, a shining beacon of inspiration, and an audience almost determined to enjoy it... the game somehow manages to fall flat on its face by removing or altering everything unique and enjoyable about its source material.
This game is a "Sad Face out of 10" because it could (and should) have been amazing. Sadly... it isnt.

All they had to do was take Black Flag, remove the hoods, the hidden blades, all the stuff that made it Assassin's Creed, sprinkle on a little added depth to replace the stuff they took out, and *BOOM* perfect pirate game. I don't understand how they could've screwed this up.
I do.
They took time to think about it.
The action of Black Flag with the simulation of Sid Meier's Pirates!. Would've been beautiful
You missed alot lol. Even for crafting in black flag you could hunt whales. There was even a system of different rare animals you could find. Adventuring was so meaningful. The story and characters and voice scting was top notch This is a pvp mobile app game….they are banking on paying obsessive pvp players to come in and buy lootboxes
@@jwebcoding7289this is it. Honestly ill take the cinematic fun and charactets and action of black flag, or the deep customization and sim systems of building a fleed in sid meier alone. Simply take one of the two and make a modern slightly improved version. We cant even get that. Combining them together is apparently too scary? Easy win

Ubisoft had the recipe for cake and made buttered toast...
yo... lmao im crying
Burnt toast
They forgot to plug in the toaster.
this gotta be one of the most wasted material in gaming
Buttered toast has some appeal. This game seems more like frozen bread that you try to defrost by soaking it in hot water.
They had the formula, they had the fanbase, they had the experience... This is like failing on test where you already know the answers.
this is the single best comment ive seen in a long time
Could not have said it better myself! ^^
I mean it is Ubisoft after all did anyone truly think they were capable of making a good game?😂 Even most of their old titles suck especially in comparison to other games of their time they just aren't worth your time or money and I'm saying this as someone who's regrettably 100 percented farcry 3 even though I love that game for what it is there are definitely better titles out there more worthy of your hard earned cash.
Know the answers? They LITERALLY had a cheatsheet with the answers written on it sitting in front of them. They could literally have copy/pasted Black Flag, updated the graphics/combat systems and adjusted the storylines and people would have been happy. And they couldnt even manage to do THAT....
It isn’t disappointing if you didn’t expect it to be good to begin with.
That is one way of looking at it yes.
I’m convinced this is going t be the last game by Ubisoft.
Also love the cyberpunk profile pic I’m a huge fan of it.
Why did this comment make me feel depressed lol
This*
I don't even play games and it looks horrible. The visuals look like a cell phone game.
No my friend. This isn't disappointing or baffling at all. This is exactly what you would expect from a quadruple A game.
I for one give it 5 As😂
Maybe there is DLC upgrade tiers in the in game shop to make the game a AAAA or even AAAAA title.
If you look at this flowchart you see it only goes to three A's. So when you get to four A's the line must begin at one A once more.
Well, "AAAA game" was really a brilliant joke, that's right. But it's true - that's EXACTLY what you would expect from an MMO about sailing and pirating. So far literally nobody succeed to make such a game without it being niche product or abstract cartoonish non-competitive mayhem like SoT. People, who played games like Naval Action were happy with it even without it having a UI - and their problem with S&B is absence of global PvP and Port battles. Others I assume, waited for AC Black Flag 2 online - which was pretty ridiculous thing to expect.
@@dexlab7539 not really AAAAAstonishngly bad lol
I have a f2p pirate game on my phone that looks and plays EXACTLY like this! Only difference is, in the f2p game, you can board ships and fight.
what's it called?
I have compared the controls to a mobile game as well. I only played the open beta and had never heard of the game before. I felt exactly baffled about the things mentioned in the video. Even Sid Meier's Pirates is so much better in every single way, including the original 1987 version.

Back up. There’s no boarding enemy ships at all? But that’s the best part of ship fighting. Grabbing a rope and swinging onto the enemy ship to fight. When I did that with Edward Kenway in Black flag, I felt like Jack sparrow in a video game. Skull and bones took a massive step backwards. Wow. Plus the whale hunting in Black flag and rogue was amazing. It was really cool that we were able to hunt the white whale(i’m a big Herman Melville fan lol 😂)
And why not give players all the ship parts instead of crafting them?
There will be more gameplay.
Quadruple AAAAAAAAAAiiiiiiii
They spent 10 years stripping all the fun and charm out of black flag until all that was left was this mediocre shell.
Hell, boarding a enemy's ship is possible even in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, and that came out in 2005!!!
ship boarding is a cut scene from what I've seen.
No melee combat is wild, that was half the game in Black Flag
"Baffling mediocrity" is a description fitting to most AAA titles for past 10 years.
Yet, developers want more and more money, for less quality.
This is what happens when you drag your feet for 10 years.
Such a shame. Loved black flag.
You get a AAAA masterpiece. 😂
pretty sure the devs just milked the development and decided to really work on the project after a decade.

reading Glassdoor and other employer review sites about Ubisoft, many former devs say "management doesnt listen and direction is absent". it all makes sense.
Whoever thought to take swashbuckling completely out of a damn PIRATE GAME should never be allowed to touch game development for life.
I think this was a salvage job. It most likely had a way more ambitious premise in the beginning, and at some point they decided it wasnt worth the money and time they were spending. Then they threw some interns and inexperienced employees at it just to connect all the dots and get it in a shape it could be released just so it could at least make some of their money back
no, it was a scam, they got money from India, and strung along development until the issue of its release was forced.

Shocker that a pirate game that doesn’t allow you to do pirate things like I don’t know, sword fight, sucks. Never would’ve guessed.
Wasn't skull and bones developed by a Singapore studio? Ubisoft opened a studio to get some government subsidies but it ended costing Ubisoft more in the long run, i.e. 10 years.
I work in software development and I visited Singapore for 3 months, saw how they work there. They "work" until 22h to get bonus pay, but all of the developers, mostly from India, leave after 6 months, so there's no continuity in development work. I put "work" in quotes because one of the screen share sessions the dev had a mouse jiggler app on his desktop, probably to mimic that he was available and hard at work. Nothing really ever got done, just rework after rework.
I can relate to this, Ubisoft just cut their losses and released skull and bones to be done with it and get out of the Singapore.
Typical indians from india.
Good at talking but zero in execution.
Interesting🤔 this actually sounds plausible
I still remember in Sid Meier's Pirates! Using a storm to escape a Spanish Galleon I aggro'd. My hull was already minced from an earlier battle and the storm tore my sails to shreds but I managed to escape with my hold full of spice!
OG 1987 Pirates! or 2000s Xbox /PC Pirates! ? Both are great BTW
Cool story!
I must have hundreds of hours in that game. Such a classic.
I loved that game. Nothing compares
@@Lauterec It really is a classic. To think it was made so long ago and the only game that came even close was 11 years ago with Black Flag. That hurts to think about. Age of Sail doesn't get much love.
Ten years... Ten ungodly years. I remember seeing this game announced so long ago snd thought "oh nice a AC4BF clone, should be out pretty soon"
remember the Combine only took 7 Hour's
Something else that's worth a mention about the ships:
Go and look at _Anno 1880_ ships. They're almost a direct cut-and-paste to Skull & Bones; some hull and rigging designs are identical. The commodities and furniture buffs you store onboard are similar too! Check out some footage; you won't regret it.
You mean - they have masts and sails? And have those funny names like "cutter" or "brigantine"?
@@yurkofess3825 A "cutter" rig is a real term in sailing. Brigantine is not tho…lol. What a mess. But no, I mean the actual ship models-as in how the ships look; two of them are almost identical to the hull shapes and rigging used in Skull & Bones.
Can't remember the name of the smaller ships in Anno 1880-maybe "Gunboat"(?)-but they look EXACTLY like the first real ship you get in Skull & Bones.
@@bveracka please, elaborate on "not a real term".
As for models - it's pretty logical, that they look similar, because they have same generic prototype.
@@yurkofess3825 That's fair, and I was _totally_ wrong about "brigantine"; it is absolutely a real rig design - I've just never seen one in many years of sailing and looking at boats, so I figured it was made up (my bad). On sailing yachts and ships - including the ones of today - there are different rigging designs, and all have specific names.
"Rigging" refers to the mast, the booms, all of the cables and ropes (lines) which hold them up, and the lines and sheets which control and help the sails do their job.
Each type of rig has a different name, and the most common are; sloop, ketch, yawl, and cutter. Back in the days when schooners ruled the waves, there were others, including the brig, brigantine, and barque.
It _seems_ like these names were often region-specific in the case of the latter ones though, which is why I'd never heard the term "brigantine" before.
@@yurkofess3825 The main thing about the sailing and the ships in Skull & Bones is the lack of realism in sailing. From the way sails unfurl, how the ship or crew has stamina that runs out while sailing fast, how the sails behave in the wind, right down to the ridiculous spikes you can put on the helm and gunnels, and those hilarious healing cannons.
Honestly, if you like the game, that's cool. I'm not hating on you for that.
Advertised as a pirate game, in reality it's World of Warships with sailboats. The Day Before-style false advertising at it again, everyone.
World of Warships at least has timely releases for content and is decent to play. This is just the DNF of pirate games!
Nah. The game is exactly what we were told or would be. And everyone has seen how the vision has diminished over the years, going from the expanded Black Flag experience everyone wanted to... This. The writing has been on the wall for years. If anyone is shocked by how bad this game is, it's because they didn't keep up with the news on it over the last decade.
It’s ship Fortnite is all. Like everything else all these gaming companies are trying to chase still lol awful
The user interface made me think he was playing a mobile game the whole time.
Is like Elite Dangerous , you’re the ship.
Mediocrity huh.....🤔
Pretty wild how that word sums up Ubisoft as a whole this past decade.
Oh well
Live by it, crumble by it.
Exactly. Well, almost a decade. I liked the first Watch Dogs and the Crew. Those were above mediocre. But they will both be 10 years old this year, so there's that.
Ah good ol Ubisoft. Where the trailers look outright beautiful and you're hyped for the game. But, when you play the game itself both visually and play style is 2 generations older then the rest🙄
@@Sukenus that's fair Watch Dogs 2 was pretty fire.
@@SeaDoge13 it's frustrating for sure. And I was once a diehard for their games.
They could do no wrong in my eyes, but then I played AC Unity. Jumped ship immediately.
@@JustCallMe_Tae Watch Dogs 2 wasn't a bad game, but it didn't stand out enough to make it interesting for me. Ubisoft just repeats the same formula with all their games, which makes the end product pretty forgettable.
The real tragedy here is the waste. Waste of an idea, waste of an opportunity, waste of money, waste of time.
No vision and no passion, just a desire for profit.
Basically Pirates in this game are employees of a delivery service or something.
Oh and the endgame...you give up pirating to become a sea trader. I seriously spent the last 2 days as a kingpin just sailing from each of my manufactories picking up pieces of 8, returning them to the safe zone, killing time getting supplies to make more products, and repeating the process every 2 to 3 hours. Thats endgame prestige level 20 for ya... ya quit pirating to trade goods or go farm some single special creature because it only drops 3 of the loot you need 50 of to get the 1 ship mod you need. Neither of those tasks involve pirating.

Meanwhile, Helldivers II just dropped for half the price and acres of content and is the biggest game in the world right now.
1:58: The real problem was that they had changed the directors/producers on this project on a yearly basis and each of these was so arrogant and selfish that they always threw out everything that was created before and restarted the project on their own terms and ideas....and after a year or so, they were out of the company or they were transferred to another project, so a new lead designer came. The team had to start it over and over and over and over... again. What we see now, is the only thing that remains from the original vision. This is what the developers were able to save and put together from the pieces they were left with.
Makes me sad. I know this game would have been great. It was supposed to be. Um beyond disappointed with how badly it's being received. I enjoy the game for what it is. But I'm upset by the things missing.
Black Flag really was impressive back in the day, I completed everything I could in that game
it was actually incredible... and even looking back at it now it holds up well.
I remember fighting the elite ships in the corners, taking hours to complete the challenge
I remember sprinting home from school after getting my copy of Black Flag. Played that for hours on end.
Looks like shit nowadays and the jank of the AC games of the era is still there, but the rest is still solid iron. Have many hours in it but never played it through. Can't remember why I stopped, I only have good memories of it. But thanks for reminding me. Definitely picking it up for a full playthrough.
The ONLY thing I didn't care from in that game was Edward himself. There was something about him that didnt see well with me. I liked the story of t he DLC a lot better.
The bureaucracy of these large gaming companies has been ruining what could have been good games for quite a while now. You can tell they probably had a good game in the original vision but it's just been lost probably multiple times in the last DECADE of development. It's pretty infuriating. The only games I actually like playing these days are indie games.
No boarding, holy shit
If you want a game that has actual sail mechanics look into a game called sailwind, it's an indie game made by a single guy and in early access but has been getting regular updates every couple of months and beta updates almost weekly often less.
It's a slow paced game with no combat.
It's core game loop is mostly just trade, but storms, wind, realistic sail management and ship customisation make things interesting and it's fun to play around with different sail configurations, ships, and cargo management as where you place the cargo matters.
How dare you! You just don't understand AAAA. :-)
I think they need a new spring for that key.

Quadruple A game
Yep. I'm another one who noticed that.
I can think of at least two approaches they could have implemented to do this, and I'm a mediocre programmer at best, so it is really annoying to see them release this at $70, further dilute and shift the game quality goal post away from "a polished product" to "utter garbage," and then suffer no consequences for leadership beyond missed sales (which will only lead to consequences for bottom line devs and qa, not leadership or marketing of course).
Whoops.
I remember when SoT and skull and bones were announced people considered SoT to be more arcady and lighthearted and Skull and Bones more realistic.
How the tables have turned
They did a Saints row

The fail is 100% deserved
One thing I noticed about coverage of this game is that people seemed to have memory holed Sea of Thieves which is also a live service pirate game and should be a direct comparison. It's been constantly updated and hits everything people wanted in this game.
Yeah well at launch that was the biggest piece of shit just as barebones as this crap.
"But hey, just wait a few years and the game will be good." Shut your fcking CNT.
Other than knowing the development hell this game had been in and what games are like nowadays, that was one of my main reasons for not getting it. Why buy another pirate game (which is from ubisoft so it was almost guaranteed to be be garbage) when black flag and sea of thieves exists?
Sea of Thieves is quite boring and also had a poor launch. They haven't been able to get around the core gameplay being a bunch of fetch quests with the only reward being money to buy cosmetics. The on foot combat is really dull, especially against NPCs, but the PvP mode is quite good.
That being said, I agree with your point about it not being mentioned. In my head, the pirate aspects and combat of assassins creed 4 mixed with the adventure multiplayer aspects of sea of thieves is what this game was meant to be, so I'm also surprised that no one seems to be talking about it
Funny thing is... this game is far better than Sea of Thieves when it dropped
I disagree, sea of thieves is very far from what alot of people want out of a pirate game, one thing is it's hyper stylised graphics and another is the fact that the gameplay loop is very uniform and frankly boring. Like if you really like the goofing of sea of thieves, it's a great game, but like it is nowhere near what I want out of a pirate game, which would be closer to simulated realism than the arcade gameplay of sea of thieves.
I'm not sure how this is baffling, the expected outcome is in the very title itself.

It still baffles me that you can't board ships in this game, I can't think of a single pirate story where they don't board an enemy ship.
As defender of this game said:
iTs FoR pVP
It makes total sense when actually playing the game, you would know if you played it long enough. There is a short crew board animation that will destroy a ship faster. The purpose is if you are in big ship battles and you need to sink 1 faster. This is a ship battle game so it makes perfect sense, really. For 11 years, this was a ship battle game. Nobody said it was a sea of thieves wanna be
@@xColter damn people like you are why the gaming industry is shit
I've seen pirate BOARDGAMES where you can board enemy ships. Apparently they did with dice and cardboard what Ubi couldn't with their "quadruple A" game. What on earth?!?
@xColter it might make sense, but it doesn't make it fun. There was boarding in Black Flag and there were large, multi-ship battles. Personally I would've preferred a more realistic system, where ships are solo or in small groups, with the occasional armada battle. This would allow boarding without affecting the game play loop adversely. They could've also allowed for you to retreat back to your ship/ cancel boarding in the event your ship comes under attack while boarding. There's just so many ways to incorporate such a system that would enhance the game play that would also 'make sense' in the context of the game's systems and mechanics.
It took them 10 years to figure out how to cut out the maximum possible to sell back to you as expansion 😂
It looks like the ship is shooting rockets instead of cannonballs, they nailed it in AC3 what the hell went wrong

I would liken it more to an early GTA game where you can't get out of the car on your own and only do when your character has to be in a cutscene
Ubisoft deserves to go out of business
Also, correct me if I'm wrong but this takes place in late 17th century but torpedoes didn't happen till 1866
The end product; it's the outcome by an Asian band of misfits lead by an European pirate captain. Btw the first successful attack with a torpedo took place in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Also the Golden Age of Piracy is a common designation for the period between the 1650's and the 1730's. 😂😭😂
Didnt think they'd make something more barebones than atlas and launch sea of thieves
Bruh the expose articles on this are going to be FASCINATING!!!!
After a few months, they need to sell the studio and fire the lead designer and developer.
I couldn't get past how the canons feel like a machine gun
They either needed to remaster Black Flag, or give us a second - what they came out with, was complete and utter tripe.
I'm thankful for the fact they released a beta, as it saved me, and many others, 70 quid. It also taught us that if a studio says its a AAAA game.... it's shite.
Spent an hour of the beta and that was enough to decide to give this a wide berth, it's pretty pathetic.
Time to install Black Flag again.
They are remaking Black Flag... with this team.
@@65firered that may be bitter sweet 😑
The only games to have recieved the AAAA game label are Callisto Protocol and Skull and Bones, and both ended up hugely underwhelming.
Makes me think of the PS5 and it's really underwhelming library so far
was this the supposed quadriple A quality game?
it's a financial rating system where AAAA doesn't even exist , nothing to do with quality , just production cost.
Non game related but Ad related. I love it when a non IT chanel has an Ad for a VPN and describes, albeit in simple words, what a VPN actually does as in this example: "It keeps you safe from MOST internet related threats" While most IT guys on YT will tell you "you get complete and total anonymity on the interwebs, no one will be able to track you anywhere anymore"
Kudos to you sir, good and as usual straight forward vid, love it
They could’ve taken out the assassin stuff out Black Flag and redesigned the ground combat a bit I would’ve bought it even today.
With Black Flag you could’ve boarded enemy vessels for more loot or taken their ship, attack coastal forts ending in a ground assault, dive to ship wrecks, spear fish whales.
Skull & Bones seems to have less of a game for the same price.
More price
$70
Sid Meier's Pirates is my preferred pirate game
It's a bare minimum of a pirate, it's not even a pirate game. A ship battle game. When you control your character on hubs feels disconnected from the world, an after thought and it feels like it use be a menu hut made it into a hub. Imagine watching Pirates of the Caribbean, but all the footage happens on the ship. The atrocious Pre-orders packs MTXs' design to milk a sinking ship. Overall, it feels like chores to play Skulls and Bones.
At this point, I imagine Ubisoft consider mediocrity a hell of an achievement.
Absolutely wild they did more advertising for this game than Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is an actually great Ubisoft Game. Really tells you about a lot about the direction Ubisoft is going where they'll market broken games over finished ones.
Definitely not disappointing. Exactly what I expected. This game has been getting talked bad about literally since 2018
I find it amazing that as you're ripping this game apart, I got an add for it.
But yet he's still going to play it 😂
get the adblock on fam
I haven't seen you recommended in my feed for a while. Odd you just randomly popped up even tho I'm subbed.
I’m absolutely fed up with brown gray graphics for the sake of “realism”. I want life and color in my games, not something boring and dour.
But but but..........its AAAA.
😂😂😂😂
So ironic, commercials for Skull and Bones appeared before and mid video XD
Me watching a cannon call hit a sail with the same dirt splash effect as if it hit the deck: oh yes, such AAAA.
Sailing looks like the game is going at 1.5x speed. You can’t board and fight on enemy ships. Resourcing islands is done without exiting the ship. It’s not a pirate game, it’s a ship battling sim. Black Flag remake is going to dust this game in sales
The moment I decided I would not touch this pile was when I listened to the beginning of the intro... and it's entire message was about "The dawn of capitalism". This from Ubisoft. "Tainted in blood", "Tyranny and exploitation" in a game where your character is a pirate. No thank you, I'm good.
Don't you understand? Pirates good, capitalism bad!
Not too bright are you? Connecting concepts is hard for people that don't think I know. Pirates are no different than any other oppressed and angry people that you can look at today. Plunder, rape, murder, destruction, this INDEED was their middle finger to capitalism and social norms. The system did not work for them and so they said fuck the system.
Christ, people these days don't even know the basics about anything. Just little simps for republican brainwashing. Empty headed puppets.
And btw, capitalism IS tainted in all that... It's why normal people can't afford anything while we have a 1% that could literally buy the world. Try thinking for once in your life instead of just drifting in the void. And just so you don't give me the basic talking point I know you're gonna try to spit out, ALL of these economic systems are built on someone's suffering, death, and misery. You're naive and ignorant if you think capitalism is some holy precious exception.
@@jdog2302 OH, is that it? Huh. Nope, missed it.
It's hard to find a game nowadays that doesn't exist to push THE MESSAGE. So sick of all the commie propaganda, the blackwashing, the gender and sexuality swaps. I wish more people rejected this cancer.
It's not even historically accurate.
Capitalism dawned in the early days of the Silk Road, several centuries prior.
How is it possible for a game from 2024 to have WORSE visuals than a game from 2013?
@@ivanasukjadic1423 He can complain about whatever he wants, take your own advice and go get some sun, it might change your nihilist "nothing is important!" view.
Sounds like Sid Meiers Pirates but with less to do
The second I saw different coloured cannons. It was over. YIPPEE A BLUE CANNON!!!!! THAT IS BETTER THAN MY GREEN CANNON THATS THE SAME MODEL!!!! CANT WAIT TO GRIND FOR A PURPLE CANNON!!!!
