It is essential to maintain our objetivity.... In my opinion, he was only "correct" in this performace. But despite everything, he sings quite well. How easy is to criticize !!
I agree with your comments. Del Monaco was a marvelous, wonderful performer. Even with all the distortions of "You tube videos" the astonishing quality of his voice can come shining through. In this video recording , however, he does not sound good. He sounds flat on many notes, and there is an uncharacteristic honking quality to his sound. It could be that he was already sick with the disease that ended his life. Or it could be that this video recording is playing at the wrong speed. TH-cam videos set too slow can make world class singers sound flat. This is not my favorite, of the del Monaco performances that I can hear as youtube videos. This is interesting for historical reasons.
imo, it's obviously because of the poor recording. 0:10 the resonance isn't there since the very first moment, which is impossible for MDM (we all know that his voice is never lack of resonance).
I thought the whole point of a performance by a spinto dramatic tenor was to produce a a spinto dramatic sound. The volume of air required to produce this very special sound will also produce a big sound, that will fill the House and thrill the followers. Or is this all too simple?
@@alfredoloyola921 there is a opinion that Mario was not a dramatic tenor, but a full liric tenor with great squllo. but he sang everything with force and dramatcally

The aria was absolutely Butchered. Where was the Lover, the Poet, where was the Nuance, the Phrasing and Light and Shade. All these important elements were missing. MDM bawls away regardless, its if someone is prodding him from the rear saying SING LOUDER MARIO they cant hear you from the back. Its a shame really because there is no denying the Heroic quality of the voice.
Bad singing in general... Sometimes is flat without giving meaning to shorter notes... Amazing instrument though and easy top as always!!! Nothing special to be honest compering to Corelli, Björling, Tucker, Di Stefano... Even Domingo is better than MDM in this aria...
MDM must have done better in 1946 when He debuted Chenier and Giordano handed him a signed photo " To My Chenier" But what did Giordano know? Bjorling never sang Chenier, His voice was too small. Domingo's high notes were always an adventure. I think Tucker was great in Chenier, but Tucker's favorite tenor's were Gigli and Del Monaco.
@@sugarbist Yes, Tucker was a great Chenier and in fact when asked by myself back stage once in a conversation with him about singers of the past, I asked Tucker as a young tenor singing in the opera of the great tenors before your time in opera, who did you most admire for voice in the past and now of your Peers, and he told me lyric Gigli with his very sweet voice and in his own time, Del Monaco was a great favorite of Tucker, so when MDM was singing in Verona in Carmen, Tucker attended and was back stage after the opera in MDM' S dressing room, each tenor promised to take the other out for the best dinner in town the next time they met, as MDM called Tucker the Primo number one tenor in NY at the Met.
Tucker and Corelli were excellent Cheniers, but Bjorling never sang the role and Domingo squeezed his way through the passaggio, cutting phrases short, while his high notes were always an adventure.
Sort of manageable egoism allways, when MdM works. No silly showmanship gestures and jumping around without a clue of what he's singing like Bonisolli for instance...
I have no idea where this ranks in various recordings of this aria...not being a MDM fan I thought I'd give it a listen, and try to be fair, but outside of the at times obvious power of the voice, I find it as bad as I imagined. No poetry, after all he is reciting a poem a beautiful vision, kind of lurching around the line, and not even particularly over whelming as is his usual approach. I can think of many tenors who do it much better.
Labienus It's 1961's record - not best time of MDM. I think you have to listen studio record of 1952 year - it is great record. ( th-cam.com/video/YUzM0iO3fDY/w-d-xo.html )
Григорий Фокин I'm hardly a MDM fan, even at his best, but I thought this far from his best. I keep trying to see-beyond the obvious power and aspects of the tone itself-why some people like him so much, but I want to be fair. By the way if this was the state of his voice at this date, I understand why he never returned to the Met, and why he was overwhelmed by the impact of Corelli in the late 50's.
Labienus Listen to MDM singing Samson, Aeneas in "I Troiani" (Berlioz's Les troyens translated in italian) or his Forza live recording under Dimitri Mitropoulos.
Allzumenschliches44 As I said I'm not a fan-he generally seems to know only one volume level, loud-but I know he's capable of much better than this. Sure Samson, Pagliacci, even Forza, certainly Otello-but not even my favorite in that-but he's not going to be remembered for Troyens In Italian-full of transpositions lapses of style-for the heroic parts of the role he could have been good, but he distorts it-but it has to be sung in French Every once and a while especially in the earlier phases of his career he surprises me, but mostly I don't find him interesting, and as fewer people remain who heard the voice live, his reputation has faded
Labienus I'm fan and must agree with your remarks. I don't have a clue why he insisted on powerful and trumpet-like voice. He was definitely capable to perform lyrical parts.
dico Bravo Mario del Monaco che mi procuri emizioni nelle tue esecuzioni fatte nel corso della tua lunga carriera. Felice di essere italiana come te.

Its a shame really because there is no denying the Heroic quality of the voice.
1:33 1:42 2:01 sandwiched scream.
Its all about baritone monaco.
He has also problems with breathing.
A vocal disaster
Ecco un altro intenditore!!! Bravo le stronzate sapete scriverle...complimenti
Shut tour f... M..ok?
@@sugarbist This is a lyric aria, he would be greater in the first act aria, but earlier in the 1946, I'm sure was great in this also.
Altra stronzata...bravo

I'm hardly a MDM fan, even at his best, but I thought this far from his best.
