    Katherine, I am a mixed media watercolor artist and I love to use collage in my backgrounds. I just heard about using encaustic wax as a way of doing collage. Your video was super helpful by giving the items that I need to get started. Thanks so much for sharing!!! Happy painting! xx

    Where did you get the big tub of bees wax with damar? Thanks

    • @KatharineMiele
      @KatharineMiele  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it came in a bag (packaged by R&F or jacqard) and I bought the tub from dollar store.

      @@KatharineMiele thanks. Do you use the soy to clean your brushes.? I did buy the bees wax with the damer.

  • @KatharineMiele
    @KatharineMiele  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I do - yes. I keep a little tin of soy wax on the pallet as well (I don’t put the entirety of my wax in there since it’s gets dirty quickly. But when it is too far gone, I’ll change it out for fresh) they sell both soy wax shavings (preferred) or a tin of it… not preferred.

      I know do you just keep it for that color or do you just throw it away and add new each time? Seems like a lot of waste but what happens to all the brushes? Just let them get hard and use a different brush each color?. Thanks🌻

    • @KatharineMiele
      @KatharineMiele  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nooo I will wipe off my brush after cleaning any excess in a towel of some kind. Typically it gets pretty clean. If I’m going to use the same colors over and over within one sitting, I will use multiple brushes. But if I’m going to use one color for a while, and then a different one, I’ll clean it in between. When they cool, the brushes will get hard. But warming them up again they’ll soften back. I usually leave the tips of the brushes sitting on the heating surface between uses. I don’t use the griddle anymore from this video. The heating element was too uneven. So now I use one that keeps the temps regular and won’t burn my bristles.

      @@KatharineMiele hi and thanks I don’t want you to know I am new to this particular medium, but I do know that no matter what you do when these bushes get hard they don’t totally soften up and I’m using hake brushes and I don’t think I need all these big sizes to sometimes just do a little bit of a color. I am using a fan brush with a color and it got so hard if I stick it back in the soil wax it’s just gonna turn the color, the same as I poured it out into another container, allowing it to get hard, so should I just melt that color and put it back in I don’t know. Thanks.

      @@KatharineMiele I kinda get it I am quickly dip in the fan brush and wiping it off on a towel and it seems to be working pretty good.

    Thank you very much for this useful information for beginners. Does TH-cam provide an option for you to turn on, or add, closed captions/subtitles? (A lot of YT videos seem to have 'auto-generated' English captions.) If not, a list of supplies in the description would be really helpful, especially for the hard of hearing. 🌷

    Thank you for this list! I'm excited to try this, but will need to wait until I have more space. I was fascinated by the painting behind you. I'll look to see if you did a video on it--if not, would you consider it? New subscriber! Thanks again.

      +DreamingCatStudio welcome! Thank you for shbscribing! I'm so excited by how many people are seriously interested in encaustic- it's crazy that so few people have heard of it! So I have a few videos on it during a few stages of the process. They're in my "oil painting" playlist. The title of the painting is "amenities" if that helps you find it. Also, I have progress photos of it ALL OVER my Instagram. Haha that's @kathrancisco :)

    Hi, are you still posting? Cuz, I just found you, and I am new to encaustic, but I am trying to find out: can you mix oil paints from the tube with the encaustic medium? I have seen people use R & F paint sticks on top of a layer and fuse it in, but is it safe to mix oils with the medium? Big hug, cat

    • @KatharineMiele
      @KatharineMiele  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cat yeah I haven’t fully abandoned my channel yet! I’m in grad school right now- don’t have the time to post videos during this period. But I will be on here again once I get my degree! Haha thanks for asking. So I think you can use oil paint. I know that you can make your own encaustic pigments with paint from the tube. I think the pigment sticks you can buy use slightly less oil than tradition, from the tube paints. But just mix them (some experimentation may be necessary to get the consistency you want) with some pure bees wax and damar resin medium on the pallet and you’ll be good to go!

    So you are using a pancake griddle to heat the wax?

    • @KatharineMiele
      @KatharineMiele  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Willoughby yes! Because that’s what I had to use when I was getting started. And it’s inexpensive - you can find one from Walmart very cheap. Or use an old one. You won’t be able to use it to cook anything on after your put wax on it. I now have a heating pallet that I bought from R&F that produces even heat. And it’s easily cleaned. But that was very expensive- although worth investing in if you’re going to be doing a lot of painting.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video, very informative! I have a question about the supports on the back of the birch board. Did you cut them & glue those on since as you said, there are no elongated gesso birch boards.

    • @KatharineMiele
      @KatharineMiele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Olive Yew thank you so much! So that was a regular panel that I purchased and gessoed with the R&F encaustic Gesso. I bought the board with the supports already on it from the store. They sell the raw supports that can be primed with whatever type of primer you want... It's like buying a raw canvas and priming it with gesso.
