  • This is Psalm 91/121 chanted in Tone 7. In most parishes the Psalm is simply read, but for those interested, there are 8 different tunes that can be used to "sing" the Psalm as shown in this video. Psalm 91/121 are typically used during Evening Compline Prayers (9 PM).

    Psalms 91:1-16 (ASV) He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
    I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust.
    For he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the deadly pestilence.
    He will cover thee with his pinions, And under his wings shalt thou take refuge: His truth is a shield and a buckler.
    Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, Nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
    For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
    A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; [But] it shall not come nigh thee.
    Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, And see the reward of the wicked.
    For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation;
    There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.
    For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways.
    They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
    Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot.
    Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
    He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honor him.
    With long life will I satisfy him, And show him my salvation.

    Beautiful. Is there also one in Malayalam?
    There is a video of Fr Philemon signing the morning Quqlion beautifully in tones 4 & 5.
    Can I get the Evening Quqlion in Malayalam please?

      Lizzy Star Glory to God! I hope this channel is helpful in some way. I’ve been working on the Lenten Prayers for the time being. Recently uploaded the full Morning Prayers (including Quqlion, 3rd Hour and Sixth Hour) in the 8 Tones - although in English. The next project God willing would be the Evening Prayers in the 8 tones. I will try my best for the Malayalam (but note that my pronunciations might be slightly off😅)

    Is the phrasing arbitrary? And how do you even know this? And how can I learn this?

      Merin Thomas I will try posting the lyrics when I get some time. This hymn may sound complicated but it’s actually just a repetition of three different melodies. Think of it as Melody 1 which is Tune A up till Halleluyah then Tune B. Melody 1 is followed all through Psalm 91. Then a shift occurs (shulofo) and Melody 2 comes which is Tune C up till Halleluyah then Tune D. Then a second shulofo (variation) occurs in the third to last and second to last verse with Melody 3 which is Tune E up till Halleluyah then Tune F. Then the last verse is back to Melody 1 again. This variation in tune is done for Tones 1, 3 and 7. The other 5 tones follow the same one Melody all the way through but I haven’t had a chance to record those yet.

    This is one of the Prayers for the dead right?

    • @OrthoBeats
      @OrthoBeats  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tylerbradley2957 as Orthodox Christians we pray for all the faithful departed. But no, this is a Psalm we chant as part of our daily compline (9 PM) prayers which deals with the theme of repentance (seeking God’s mercy before we depart for sleep). Usually it’s simply read in prose, but on special occasions we will sing it in a tune such as this. There are 9 “tones” for this particular Psalm.

      @@22poopoo my initial comment is outdated now. Tones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 have been posted at this point, with tone 6 still pending. Tone 7 is special because it’s the first one I ever learned but it can be super long to use practically on a given day. But I enjoy Tones 4 and 6 the most.
