  • This is a now-dead print of Beatrice Lillie singing for the troops in a WWII informational film. This is the kind of thing we intend to have more of on the Dr. Film show. More rare films and discussion at www.drfilm.net

There's so little of Lillie on film that any survivors are welcome

Very fun to see, and Bea Lillie is timeless. Thank you for sharing this with us - I hope that more of the series will find themselves on TH-cam! It is a real pleasure.

Thanks for posting this! Love Bea! Hard to believe she would have been about 50 years old here … Still so beautiful! This must have meant a lot to soldiers of that day … There is a certain melancholy spirit here seeing it on the other side of the countless lives lost in WW2.

Absolutely charming - and just a touch naughty. Thank you

I repair films for a living. This is too far gone, alas. I'm glad to hear someone has another copy, although I really hope there's another complete film print out there.

I just saw an interview with Jerry Lewis, he was over 83, and talking about Carrol Burnett, he was unusually complementary, absolutely gushing about Burnett. He then compared her to Beatrice Lilly, he said Lilly had been the best physical comedian he had know, until Burnett. So far this is the best recording of Lilly I have seen and I don't know precisely what "it" is but from what I've seen she that the ephemeral "it".

That was great! You can tell Beatrice Lillie was raised performing on live stage by the way she moves her hands; she is talking with her hands to the back row of the theatre. When you look at contemporary (modern) performers, they are speaking to the camera, not to a live audience.

I just saw Bea Lillie on TCM. A 1939 movie called On Approval and a 1926 silent (can't remember the name) Both were excellent. The TCM host said that she had only made 7 movies. Reasoning was that she did not feel the feedback she needed from a live audience and as such never believed that she was giving her best.

Love this, more complete than the version I have, though the sprocket problems etc. aren't on mine (which is blue tinted for some reason). See my posts of rare Bea 78s, live. I think it's the best piece of film on Bea, which is saying something. If you have the actual film strip I may know someone, a huge fan who is also a bit of a Hollywood legend, who may know how to repair it.

This clip is welcome, to be sure, but to see what she was all about, check out "Dr. Rhythm", the Bing Crosby film, to which she is shown off to good advantage.

No rationing at the British American Servicemen's Canteen? If the Canadian Bea sings of Yanks and Tommies, what were the Canadians called?
