- Exclusive coverage of the construction of the FDI frigates at the Naval Group shipyard. We saw up-close the first FDI for the French Navy (Marine Nationale) taking shape in the construction dock. We also saw blocks of the first FDI HN for the Hellenic Navy (Πολεμικό Ναυτικό).
=====================
The first of the defense and intervention frigates (FDI) is beginning to take shape at the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient, Britany (France). Six months after its keel laying (December 16, 2021), the hull of "Amiral Ronarc'h" is fully assembled with some of its structures already in place. This first FDI, the next generation of "first rank frigate" for the French Navy, will be launched in the fall of 2022 for delivery scheduled for 2024.
Five FDI frigates intended will be ordered by the French defence procurement agency (DGA) for the French Navy. This program reinforces the technological lead of the French naval industrial base, and of Naval Group in particular.
On March 24, 2022, Greece and Naval Group signed the contracts for three FDI HN frigates, plus one optional, and their in-service support. Two FDI HN will be delivered in 2025 and the third one in 2026.
The FDI frigate is a 4,500-ton class high sea warship. Multipurpose and resilient, she features high level capabilities in all warfare domains: anti-ship, anti-air, antisubmarine and special forces projection. Strongly armed (Exocet MM40 B3C anti-surface missiles, Aster anti-air missiles, MU90 antisubmarine torpedoes, artillery), the frigate is able to embark simultaneously a helicopter and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

the Greek version leaves no doubt that it is a killer boat 🇬🇷🇫🇷
Τελειο Και για Επακουμβησεις ;)
if they had 30" RWS and space in the mid for XLS for 8 or 16 MIca would be top of the top
This ship looks like ancient Greek trireme...🇬🇷
thank you for the English version, I watched the French version earlier with auto translation. The FDI is a wonderful looking ship, I just can't wait to see it in action. I hope Taiwan can get some to replace their ageing La Fayette class. They need more modern ships to defend against China.
La version anglophone semble être plus exhaustive que la version francophone. Des sous-titres en français seraient par conséquent les bienvenus pour les fossiles préhistoriques comme moi qui utilisent encore la langue de Molière.
i love the inverted bow,its gonna be such a beautiful ship..
Only the "eye" is missing...
www.worldhistory.org/img/r/p/750x750/1184.jpg.webp?v=1649523246
I can see why the Greek will love this ship: the bow is reminiscent of their famous triremes with which the fleet of Athens defeated the Persian fleet near Salamis. If they would also paint an eye onto it... wow!
Beautiful ships too. Can't wait to see images of high speed trials of these marvels.
I do hope however that the French ships will be getting an advanced CIWS at some point that will be more capable than the two Nexter Narwhal 20mm RWS. With only 16 Aster 15 to defend themselves from aerial attack and the current geopolitical atmosphere, including the A2/AD missiles potential adversaries may launch in large volumes, the self protection seems a bit lackluster. Especially when compared with the version for the Hellenic Navy (32 VLS instead of 16, RAM launcher).
They're designed for 27 knots. And for AAW, maybe replace the Aster 15 with the CAMM missile. The ability to quad pack missiles.
@@_R-R The CAMM (Sea Ceptor ER) looks like a very good anti SSM-missile, but I'm not sure how it does against fighter aircraft.
Personally I wonder how a surface launched Meteor (booster launched) would fit in the mix. Would it be mk.41 VLS or French/Italian/British VLS compatible?
@@Pincer88
CAMM: Mach 4.
Flight Altitude: up to 10km.
Range: 45km.
Aster 15: Mach 3.
Flight Altitude: 13km
Range: >30km.
Very similar altitudes, CAMM can touch targets much farther out, much faster. And the ability to quad pack the CAMM into Aster VLS greatly expands defensive capabilities.
Meteor
N/A: Air-to-air missile.
@@_R-R Impressive! Thanks.
The Hellenic Navy version, and I think the French Navy ones too will have Aster-30, not Aster-15. Of course 16 are few but in the French Navy they will probably serve alongside AAW destroyers. Besides, the Aster missiles are generally concerned twice as good as their competitors in successful hits, so you need half the missiles to hit the same number of targets. Furthermore Aster-30 is not only faster (4,5 Mach compaerd to 4 Mach of CAMM family) but it has a much bigger range. CAMM-ER has a range of 45 km, while even the early versions of Aster-30 have a range of 120 km and it's getting significantly improved in later versions. What use is to have 32 or even 64 CAMM missiles if they can't hit the aircraft that operate like 46 km away?
This frigate is not only lethal but a feast for the eyes as well! So proud that the Hellenic Navy has chosen the FDI.....the option for the 4th one will be activated soon according to Greek media.
Thank you for providing valuable insight - mutual understanding and security is a must for us today in this world; great job, France leads the world into a bright future!
thank you
I looking forward for joint exerscises French and Greek Navy with Belharras... This will be a game changer...
You do a great work with the FDIs, French friends of Naval Group, but you do need to do a better proposal to get the Gowind contract. I'm wishing you the best.

Outstanding beauty
beautiful ships
That is a nice looking bow.
Amazing ship and design, the french know how to draw beautiful naval curves for centuries. The only grey spot to speculate is the concentration of all major sensors under one structure, the PSIM. We all understand the advantages of such a solution but its major disadvantage dictates that this ship should never, never, take a critical hit at that structure while docked at a port by asymmetrical factors or at sea or at real operations.
My thoughts also. I am hopeful that the Greek Navy men have provided for a secondary (if less capable) PSIM ... A kind of Greek patenda...
Well done!

We are just waiting... 🇬🇷
Je vous remercie. :)
Hi, I am from Yemen, I have a lot of experience in the process of protective paints, epoxy coatings used in the maintenance of giant ships, oil and iron tanks to prevent corrosion from rust and erosion factors. Is there a job?
I was waiting what kind of 3D radar inside the cone but no mention, even a provision
Inverted bow, just like a viking-ship. The next norwegian firgates.
I'll just repost from the original French version: been wondering this all along. While the location of gas turbine's chimney on fremm is understandable, why did the French Navy or Naval Group retained the conventional chimney spot for Belharra instead of the innovative space-saving design found on Lafayettes? The Gowind is also advertised as having no chimney yet Egypt, Malaysia & UAE chose the conventional chimney locations, so are those non-conventional chimney spots suffer serious issues. Seems only the Kership & Italian fremms have retained chimney variations of Lafayettes
its possible the complexity adds on the maintenance cost too much to be worth it
Do you realise the FDI has all Diesel Propulsion ( CODAD ) unlike the FREMM,so without Gas Turbines the Funnel arrangements will be different.
@@ppsarrakis that must be it. Anyways, thanks for ur reply I remembered something...
1. I forgot to phrase my comment so as to include my core point: I wasn't necessarily picturing FDI as having the same chimneys as Lafayette's but rather any alternative config that saves space such as a combo from Kership90 (ex-Ladroit class) + from both stern sides (employed by many ships)...
2. I remembered France isn't actually building heavily armed ships relative to size & weight since Russia is far below the ex Soviet, so there's no need for it, so no need to include space innovations like Lafayette's. Lafayette was conceived & designed before the Soviet collapse, so it's unsurprising France would innovate space savings during that time. I forgot this one as FDI is such a marvel that I was so immersed in how to make certain reconfigurations to make her suitable in high threat areas. I think an enhanced FDI (more enhanced than Greek ver) will emerge if the country ordering it is in a high threat, or not but plans to send it there
@@paultanton4307 do u realise Lafayette is CODAD. And if u reread carefully, Fremm was just a side point. To add, remember FDI is Lafayette's direct replacements

why are you showing the construction of the future battle ship?! your hull design is supposedly a secret! why are you showing it to the world! specially to the chinese! i really don't understand why are you showing such confidential information about the ship.
Hulls aren't that easy to keep secret in general. Usually it's more the propellers
Make me sad and furious to Malaysian Gowind that been made in Malaysian shipyard. Still not finish constructing to this day. 8-9 years still not even one ship deliver to RMN.
Here in Greece we are still waiting after 17 years the last Super Vita ship which is being "constructed" in a local shipyard.
Better let the French build them.
@@Trusteft And I though this only happen in my country. Also, this is second time it happen in my country, same shipyard different name. RMN need 27 ship based on Meko 100 but because of delay we only get 6 ship which only equip with 76mm naval gun and 30mm for close quarter, no missiles like it intended. Also, RMN wanted a SIGMA design but Malaysia MOD gave them GOWIND. Sad indeed.
Malaysia calls it F-LCS or Frigate LCS. But there's a new name: *Forever Lying-in Construction Ships*. Don't feel offended. I think most if not all countries experienced various forms of long delays that it's practically the same as Lela class✌️
I read that the LCS will resume fitting out again so the first two ships are scheduled for 2025. Then after that the government will decide on the 3rd - 4th ships. I’m not Malaysian but I monitor this project closely since the start.
@@maesterrific That is true. I really hope all 6 ship will be deliver someday.
That´s a very weird bow.
FDI has been built since 2019. Almost sinse then, the Japan Mogami class fridgate was started to be built. But now, Japan has commissioned 2, launched 5 Mogami class .
In is no comparison with Japanese industrial capabilities. It is just to big and powerfull.
Japan is going to modify its non-militay constitution, which means it can export wapons overseas soon.

This will give greek navy an advantage against TN until they have their own tf2000 destroyer!
Yeah whatever we heard the same about the Altay tank but it was a complete failure lol, same goes for their jet fighter and ship just fail attempts to build their own weapons.
@@Silent.Hunter this is just your false assertion! And I do not simply agree with that!
The tf2000 is not better than the FDI
@@khabibnurmagomedov9707 the turks said that they can't keep up with the altay program due to lack of engines for the tank (since the engine has Ukrainian origin) and most of the parts of the tank come from foreign countries. Also, if you're gonna call me wrong then at least have some proof to prove me that I'm false 🙂
@@Silent.Hunter okay! I am studying in military college and this is my area of academic expertise! And I am not a turk nor I ever been to turkey so I don't have any national bias. This is true that altay project has been delayed multiple times. However that doesn't mean that project is a failure. Vast mejority of the major defence project like that usually suffer multiple delays and there lot of example of that in highly devoloped countries. This kind of project only considered a failure when state abondon it completely. Now altay project is still running and I have good reason to believe this will be successfully completed. It was supposed to be an Austrian or japanese engine for the altay tank but that deal failed to reach an agreement. then ukraine offer its own engine for the altay however ukrainian engine didn't meet the requirements so it was decided altay will have german engine, however after the turkish invasion in syria 2020 germany refuse to give additional engine after supplying only four. It should be noted, the foreign engine was supposed be installed in the first lot of the serial production only. From the second lot altay is supposed to have indigenous turkish engine. And a contract was signed between SSB and BMC power for devolopment of a 1500 horse power engine in 2018. In 2021 BMC power successfully ignite the indigenously devoloped engine for the first time. In 2025 2026 timeline it is supposed to be ready for installing in the second lot of the altay serial production. And I have good reason to believe that timeline will be met. especially given turkey were able to succsessfully devoloped a gas turbine tarboshaft engine indigenously for its light utility helicopter and medium attack helicopter program. It known that Gas turbine is the most dificult technology to master in the engine domain. For now SSB is testing a korean engine for altay tank. If it can meet all the requirements then the serial production will be started for the first lot. And from experience korean engine propably will be good enough.
