if you ARE one of those people who only shops at Sephora during the sale and you are doing your VERY REASONABLE shopping and you really REALLY want to know what I recommend, it's just this: shop-links.co/cfWnIIiq2wN ...and Gucci lipsticks
I cannot open the link as I'm in the UK and it sends me to the French Sephora landing page, please could someone let me know just for pure curiosity's sake?
I’ve decided I save more by shopping the brands directly during their own sales. Pat McGrath 30% off site wide, as does Charlotte Tilbury. Most brands - drugstore and luxury - have sales more often and with more of a discount than Sephora even at Rouge level. And I find it interesting that youtubers have a whole genre of VIB sales videos but we never see “hey Pat McGrath is 30% off, here are things I love that you might love”. Thank you, Hannah, for always keeping things grounded in reality for us! It’s appreciated and refreshing.
Actually I found about the pat mcgrath sale off a small utuber called Morgan Turner, she does community posts on sales with the major luxury brands. And kinky sweat also does it sometimes, so does Karen Harris do it sometimes and brit Clarke also does community posts and will mention sales on lux brands in her lives... So maybe it just the utubers ur following
Girl what?? I have never seen a Charlotte tilbury sale of 30% off site wide please spill where you get this discount lol! The most Iv seen is like discounts on bundles but I never want any of the bundles
@@00Just_Another00 Michele Wang often posts sale info in her Community tab, too. I also saw Amanda Z do a video for Credo's recent Friends and Family sale.
I’m not sure why everyone acts like this is the best sale in the world… most people will likely only get 10% off and you can usually get that by signing up for newsletters. 20% off too is not that great a deal 🤦🏻♀️ thanks for your videos!!
This is exactly it. I've only ever received 10% because I don't live a life where I'm buying so much from sephora to get me to VIB. This sale always seems absurd. Sephora's got everyone fooled and good.
The sale is what I like to call the "It's finally time to restock my Sunday Riley Good Genes" Event. That stuff is stupid expensive, but it's one of the few things I've found that makes my skin better, and I've spent thousands trying to get it in shape. So, it's my one skincare treat.
Yes!! I’ve repurchased the tatcha dewy skin cream probably 5-6 times, but ONLY ever during the Sephora sales. Five of the six items currently in my cart are items I’ve run out of and use on a regular basis, and that’s a massive improvement for me 😌
Wouldn't just going to a dermatologist be a better use of money? Tretinoin is much more effective than lactic acid. Unless of course you already do that.
I recommend caudalie vinoperfect glycolic acid night cream. Works better than this good genes and is waaay cheaper. This line is bigger if you need even more potent.
"Amazon" has just started to exist in the Egyptian market in the last couple of months. And they're advertising their black Friday sale with: When you spend more, you save more. And I'm like: No, bitch! When you spend more, you just spend more!
Here's the thing: both you and Amazon be are right, just partially. Amazon is right under the circumstance of buying something you would guaranteed be buying down the line, like your usual toothpaste or soap etc. Being able to afford buying in bulk is how the upper middle class save a bunch of money. You are right in the absolute sense, because obviously more money spent is absolutely more money spent. Amazon and other retailers twist things for sales and contribute to confusing and taking advantage of people who do not have the luck to be taught this by a parent. I was an adult when I fully understood not just your view but also what retailers were grossly twisting
There’s a line from Community, “it won’t change the way mustard tastes.” It’s such a comical, absurd saying, but it stuck to my brain. Nothing in makeup is make or break, and nothing is urgent. Sure, I’ve been day dreaming about the Metropolis palette for over a year, but it’s not going to change my life. I already have 3 ND palettes. Even if it disappeared tomorrow and I could never have it, the sadness is small and okay. It’s okay to be a little bummed, it wont change the way mustard tastes.(despite its beautiful mustard tones)
I'm one of those ppl who actually prefers Sephora sale to brand sales, even though it's at a lower discount. I have 3 reasons: one, I like the flexibility of having access to so many different brands; two, deluxe samples at Sephora allows me to try a lot of things for "free" and therefore saves me money, and I only buy when there is a good deluxe sample I really want; three, I don't want to leave my email and information at dozens of different brands.
It’s also important to realize, the highest tier is 20% which means you’ve had to spend a large amount of money through the year to even get that discount.
It depends on how you look at it. If you spend $84 a month at Sephora, you're rouge. That is a lot, but for me, a lot of that is spent on family & friends' birthdays & Christmas. I'm not proud of it, but when you shop for a lot of women (myself included) throughout the year, it adds up quicker than you think. So, as much guilt & embarrassment as I may have about reaching rouge status, I'm also happy when I see the joy & glee on the faces of the women I love when they open Sephora gifts. Just offering my perspective. But, you're right, it is a lot of money that could definitely be spent better elsewhere. But, I like to spoil people with girly things. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Not always though. Sephora used to have these promos where you either pick 500 points or get free shipping. I would get free shipping if I get something 50$+ so I buy all the things I want then pick the 500 points. I accumulated mine that way though it's not often cause sometimes, I really don't need to buy anything :/
And for me, a discount only starts to be interesting starting at 20%. I am super happy that my go to skin care brand does their own sales with up to 40% discount (Madara cosmetics)
I appreciate your constant emphasis on maintaining autonomy throughout this sale, any sale, this season, any season. Spending at your leisure and choice is so much more important that allowing these entities to tell us when to part with our money.
I appreciate your uniqueness in preventing my reckless spending. Every other influencer is pushing me to buy, buy, buy - even though I know I can't. And, won't. Thank you. You're a godsend wrapped in a quirky, cool-girl package! 💜
@@faeriesmak do you have any good recommendations for beauty you tubers who focus on budget and buying less? I haven’t found anyone nearly comparable to Hannah in terms of quality of content alongside that kind of message.
@@evas4455 I like Shawna Ripari and Sarah Rose. Shawna also does capsule wardrobes and videos like this one. Lauren Mae Beauty tends to use what she has and talks about budgeting for sales this time of year. Truthfully what helped me the most was unsubscribing from most beauty You Tubers and only keeping ones that were not constantly buying new things or doing hauls and Sephora Sale recommendations. I really broadened what I am watching and expanded my interests over the past year or so that has made more difference.
I haven't purchased a single item from Sephora since I think 2019 BC (before Corona). Saying that makes me so happy since I used to shop compulsively, and Sephora was a major weakness.
I love that you are making my favorite point. When faced with sales do the actual math. 20 percent off 39 dollars is 7.80 so you are still in the thirty dollar range. If you are buying a 400 dollar item you are getting 80 dollars off so you are still paying 320 dollars. Go to the brand website sign up for their email and then wait for a 40% or more sale. Sephora isn't worth it.
Thank you for this! It's hard when a lot of videos in my feed treat this event like it's *that* special of a discount. I went to the Sephora site today and they encouraged me to spend an extra ~$40 so I could "upgrade" to VIB so I could save "even more" (15%) on the sale. I know it's a business, but wow the math ain't mathing, Sephora.
Yay, a low-buy year sounds great! It might be interesting to do a short no-buy to kick it off, just to get in the headspace. I personally find a total spending moratorium to be weirdly easier than a budget or a low-buy. I think it's because when the answer to "should I buy this?" is a stone-cold, unequivocal "NO," it takes away a huge amount of emotional work and decision-making. Whichever combo you choose, I'm sure you will do amazing! 🎉
This is so helpful, as usual. Recently I’ve been thinking about “seasonal self-care,” or ways that I can take care of myself for the unique challenges of the fall/winter season (e.g. early sunsets). I hadn’t yet thought about how much of a need there is for financial self-care during this season! I’ve been almost dreading the holiday sales, because I have a number of things I (sort of) need and many things I want, but the price tag of all these things in one or two months is bananas. This video pulls the pin on the temptation and the sense that I better buy everything I can think of *because it’s on sale*. Thanks for another great video!
You just transferred your love of Gucci lipsticks to me, a person who has never thought about such a luxury item in my life! “A Royal Scandal” just pierced me in the heart!
Hannah, PLEASE do a self sponsored review for the new Lisa Eldridge foundation! It releases tomorrow and she does sample cards with 4 shades. She released a video on it today!
Yes please, if it fits into your budget for self sponsored reviews I would really love to hear your opinion. It looks like there are some really light shades too!
yes team cynthia!! waiting for the sale and seeing such a huge cart full of things I thought i wanted in the last 6 months is sobering and so I end up spending less than if I bought it around the moment I wanted it, so I end up just getting refills and maybe one treat instead of six. I saw someone mention this so I thought I should add that I share my account with 4 people so we end up getting 20% off even though we each spend only 200-400 a year, highly recommend!
Ive never been drawn to the Sephora sale. First of all, I’m only a Beauty Insider and would only get 10% off, which is nooooothing. But I never understood how people go so crazy over saving 20%. I’m so happy to see a video like this with my feed being inundated with “What I’m Buying” and “Sephora Sale Recommendations”.
A caveat to Cynthias comment, related specifically to the Sephora sale, is that you have to spend $1000 each year to even qualify for 20% off. So …. You’re spending, let’s say $500 at each sale with 20% off equaling a yearly savings of $200. Idk if that’s the bar we should be accepting in the name of financial health or as a definition a “good” sale, or a sale that is worthy of this much airtime on social media. This is a cash cow for Sephora plain and simple. I used to buy my staples during the sale but have started divesting from Sephora as the primary place where I spend my beauty dollars. Now I look for cheaper dupes or brand sales through their sites. This has resulted in me NOT SPENDING $1000 on total yearly beauty purchase in the first place. I credit Hannah and Lauren Mae Beauty for giving me the much needed intervention into letting Sephora heavily influence my purchasing habits and financial health ❤️❤️❤️
I've been holding out on the Natasha Denona gold palette for a few years. I pulled the trigger this time. Also got some replacements that I needed. I don't like spending that much money, but I've been dreaming of that palette for years.
I love you. What a unique take on the “sale” while all of the other makeup lovers are losing their minds. I have a huge makeup collection, I don’t need anything. It is a trick. However, I think if the right time comes, you should buy yourself the perfect Gucci lipstick of your dreams.
hannah, this idea is brilliant. the title, the concept.. seriously. One of your best!!! the way this is framed is so perfect and impactful during this sale time for makeup lovers
My favorite thing you ever said about any sale is that if I'm not willing to pay full price I don't need it or probably even want it. It really sticks with me and reframes my urge to splurge!
You're an absolute breath of fresh air on my feed! Every second video today is 'must haves at sephora' your videos help ground me so I can realise I don't actually need any of these products
Your whole look is STUNNING in this video! Thank you for talking about this you helped me whittle my cart down to just one item I’ve been really wanting a long time
I just love love love your perspective on spending. I also never let myself get pressured by a sale. Companies try to make it urgent that we buy now, and that is never the truth. Sometimes I will spend a little more simply to enjoy the shopping experience (for instance I hate the experience shopping at Costco- I do it sometimes, but often I’ll spend a few dollars more to shop someplace else because it’s not a miserable experience.
This is such a good point! I’m willing to pay a bit more at target and Whole Foods bc the overall experience is more enjoyable to me than shopping at Walmart and Kroger. I still buy 95% of my groceries at Kroger (convenience) but when I went to Whole Foods last week I was reminded how pleasant it is by comparison to the apocalyptic scramble and death trap parking lots I’m used to 😂
I was in a cycle of constantly seeking new make up. Most of the time showing up at the store to buy more makeup without any makeup on because I wanted to use my new purchases except I didn’t lol I came home and watched videos of others using it. I bought more nearly every day without really ever taking the time to use and enjoy any of it. I finally broke out of that cycle and I’m enjoying actually using my beautiful collection and I can’t help but think your channel helped me break that cycle. Thank you for your unique channel.
I think it could be very easy for a video like this to come across as preach-y or soap box-esque, BUT with your talent for reframing the perspective on situations like potential reckless spending, I find it so insightful and helpful and I've found my own thought patterns around unneeded spending changing because of your thoughtful message. So, I want to say thank you 😊
I cannot believe how you keep coming up with new thoughts and strategies to talk about makeup sales and savings. I think I’m a true mix of a „Hannah“ and a „Cynthia“ in the sense that I truly feel little urgency about buying something immediately. A lot of times I plan on there being a window of time that does not let me purchase the thing immediately - either saving it in an open tab and waiting for a sale Or starting a search on a second hand platform. Because even though I have already decided if a thing is within my spending possibilities waiting for a time at which it costs slightly less is the time i need to make sure I want the item. The only exceptions are the things I consider tools (like foundation or skin care) that I use in the daily rather than an accessory (I.e. shiny sparkly colorful things) and those are always worth spending the full price on because they are staples that fit my requirements of being simple, affordable and reliable. Most of the time when I revisit the thing I originally wanted to buy I spent the time in between reevaluating what I already own and if it even fulfills something I cannot yet do or even the promise of it being something new has no longer a hold over me. And if I regularly keep revisiting the item even before there’s a sale or I found it second hand and I have kept wanting for it (I recall my intense wish for a dependable black lipstick a year ago) I will just buy it without feeling bad. Sales and coupon codes are an added bonus to me when I’ve already decided on buying (and I love looking for student coupons don’t get me wrong) but the extra 2-5€ are usually never the thing that get me to buy the thing, just an added bonus. (And the same goes for free shipping after spending a certain amount but that’s a whole topic for another day)
Loved this video as always - and find myself at a happy middle of You and Cynthia that feels healthy: I love to shop throughout the year but also almost always get things on sale. The key is knowing just how often sales occur between Sephora, individual brands, and other retailers. I can have a large wishlist of items I have my eye on but I’m willing to wait until a sale pops up that allows me to acquire an item or two in a financially healthy way. I dont love the idea of splurging only twice a year, especially since big carts usually result in excess items that I don’t really need, but a bit of patience can tide me over until the next brand sale/promo code/etc. In the meantime, the wishlist remains a dynamic front where items can fade out and be added without ever affecting my bank account. thanks again for another great video!
I guess you didn’t understand Sintia’s point. Sephora sale is twice a year - but it is not only sale and shop! I NEVER shop full price. There is always a sale somewhere, a coupon code, an offer etc. I shop year around but always on sale and I think Sintia meant the same. And also - Sephora has only 10-20% off, but many other brand shops and sites have 40% and more! If you buy what you want half price - this is pretty significant saving. Sephora is not the only and definitely not the best place to shop 😏
And even on Sephora itself they often have a small selection of products for half off outside their twice-a-year sales. Also: if you're someone who uses Rakuten to get cash back on purchases, or if you have an Acorns account and use the Chrome extension to invest a percentage of purchase price instead, those percentages (particularly on Rakuten) during off-sale times are usually better. And sometimes percentage back is better on individual brands' sites overall.
I bought the fewest things I've ever bought during a sale, and genuinely don't want to buy anything else. Your channel has really helped my views around spending money on beauty.
Thanks for sharing your perspective. ❤ Most brands have equal if not better discounts on their websites during the year, so even if the goal is to save, you usually save more buying items from individual web sites. The sale can be fun, but certainly isn't the end all be all. People should do what makes them happy. I usually shop one of the two sales a year and buy from brand sites throughout the year as well. You're a smart young woman. Love that we can share and support individual decisions. That's beautiful.
Smidge's collar is cute! My current spending strategy is to save things I think I want, either in a wishlist or in my head, until I either decide I don't want them or I get a chance to buy it cheaper. Or, rarely, I actually feel the absence of the thing in my life and go ahead with it. Those are usually skincare or the cheaper/ drugstore versions of things. In any case, I always enjoy your videos like this. It's great to have a make up channel with a focus on saving rather than spending. It feels like you've had an influence on other creators too, or at least the general vibe amongst smaller to mid-size channels, when it comes to being more aware of consumption and spending habits.
I just wanted to say- thank you so much for these types of videos. I’ve been struggling with shopping in general. Using these tactics from your older videos& duping the vibes& using up what you already have has really helped even in the short time I’ve been following you. I’ve started to feel the joy, pride, happiness even of using up products that I’ve purchased& working through my things.
I hope you know that your videos are changing lives. My attitude to acquiring new things in my life be it make up or clothing or accessories has changed so much since first watching your videos a few years ago. You’re awesome ❤️
I use the sale to get mascara and sunscreen. Things that I don't have multiple different brands but have one that I use everyday and use up. Everything else now there are sales everywhere and if I really want it I wait and if I still want it on sale I might get it...unless it's that Lisa Eldridge foundation.
Im so happy to have found your channel a few years ago. I know I’m def guilty of overspending on makeup. And every time I feel like buying a backup I hear you in the back of my head to just enjoy what I have while I Have it. Recently I’ve been moving towards magnetic pallets as if they were singles and duping the vibes of new pallets. Thank you 😊
I think there's a mid-ground in the type of shopper you've talked about in terms of shopping throughout the year vs shopping the sale, but it does require being controlled during a sale such that you're not chucking things in you're cart just because there's a sale and only getting things you'd planned to get (either because you were going to get them anyway or because you wouldn't get them at full price but you knew for sure you still wanted them). Sales are only worth it if you're getting things you planned to get at a cheaper price. If you end up picking up stuff you wouldn't have bought otherwise, you're just spending money. The way my parents taught me to look at sales was to ask myself if the item was worth the "sale" price rather than think of it in terms of "saving" money (and to ALWAYS include shipping and tax in the cost of the item) -- for example "is the ND retro palette worth $56 plus tax to me (assuming I get the 15% discount during the VIB sale & have free shipping)?" If the answer is no, then "saving money" with a discount or not, it's not worth it. It also means I don't want the item that much lol
I think for me it’s about thinking about how I’m thinking. I used to not put a lot of thought behind my purchasing habits, meaning if I wanted it, I would buy it. If it was on sale, even better, but then I would also purchase more. I came to your channel when I started feeling overwhelmed. You really have taught me how to use my cognitive skills when making unnecessary financial decisions, especially concerning makeup “stuff” (which I consider pretty frivolous in the scheme of life). 😘💋💋💋
This is an important video that conjures up the thinking we should all be doing when it comes to purchasing makeup. Or more like OVER purchasing makeup. ESP when every other beauty youtuber is telling us to buy buy buy. I’m grateful that ur vocalizing of being more mindful of our spending Bc let’s face it, if we adore makeup, we have more than we can use. I’m totally guilty! I appreciate u bringing my wallet back down to Earth😝!!!
Thank you, Hannah. When I first started watching TH-cam and was introduced to the Sephora Sale, I would find myself confused between influencers wishlists, what was in their cart, and what they ended up buying. For a long time, I was sucked into the hype. Your channel and your experiences have provided me with clarity. 🙂
your videos at sale season are always refreshing, but i feel like especially so this year -- i've seen so many (shameless) ads for sephora by youtubers this year. i've started skipping the sale in the past couple years thanks to you and thank god! i am *not* noticing that i'm going broke from buying the things i really want at full price (or steeper discounts than sephora ever offers --i'm a cynthia much of the time), and i'm also not hurting for more makeup, or less satisfied with my life than I would be if i spent hundreds at the sale the way i used to. it's a scam!!
"I'm not going broke from buying the things I really want at full price" I love this! Because there's something about sale time that makes us feel like we WILL. But in my past, that feeling caused me to go broke during sale time buying things I didn't really want!
I loved this video, as I love all your sale survival videos. They have been so helpful to me since the start of your channel. Also, I love this glossy, bronzey cheek on you - what products did you use?
I would buy Smidge, but not just at 80%. I’d buy him for full price. Discovered a delightful little article you wrote about baby Sadie for the NYT today. My goodness, what a good read! I hope that Smidge is delivering an equally magical effect on your family. May the love abound!! 🐱
I know u didn't meant to say that in a wrong way but I have to point out this because some ppl may see this and think "oh I want to buy a cat now" so...ADOPT DON'T SHOP PLS
@@Moonelf26 I definitely was not advocating for pet purchasing-only making a reference both to the cat and the topic of the makeup sale simultaneously. Thank you for understanding!
Oof this is what I needed to hear. When you were talking about how you won't let Sephora break your spending dormancy... I did that :( I've been so good with not buying eyeshadow (it's been months!!) but I convinced myself that the new ND face/eye palette would be valuable to my collection and that I could splurge this one time, because it would be on sale. I don't know if it is actually valuable since I didn't even try to dupe it like I normally would. With that, and some Christmas gifts, and buying a small restock of my skincare, I'm down $200+. I'm going to take this as a lesson, not be too hard on myself, but definitely force myself to rewatch this video before the next sale tempts me! You're totally right about how the sale doesn't make enough of a difference to justify spending that amount right now.
yes, don't be too hard on yourself! It's experiences like this that inform future decision-making, I've had lots of them in my past and I probably still have some in my future! It's so much better to be down $200 every once in a while and be like "huh, I kind of regret that" instead of constantly being thousands of dollars in debt like I was before my no-buy year. I think we're both doing great
I’m so happy to know that I’m not the only one who fantasizes about beauty products that I will realistically never buy just to put myself in a happy place before falling asleep. It’s like counting sheep but blushes instead!
The purchases I made during the sale were the items I was needing/running out of. A new item I had been wanting to try for a year, a pack of lipsticks I have been wanting for a long time. I had to remove items that I knew I didn’t need at this moment, knew that I could wait on that purchase. Because I do know that the savings is barely a sale like you pointed out. I did go crazy with the sale last year and chose to be smarter about it this year. Only getting what I was already going to buy.
🙏 Truly love your content. Such valid points. I did pick up a few items, but it was skincare, items that I use throughout the winter months & that last me a solid 6mths (sometimes more). I didn't go crazy as I've done in the past, it was really a question of "be logical- what do you need? Are there better deals elsewhere? Do you have items now to suffice?" It's not always easy because we all get caught up in the marketing of "this item will change your life" Sometimes they do, but not always. I realized that as much as I adore makeup, the beauty of it, I rather have more experiences - a nice dinner, movie night, museum tour, travel, a beautiful article of clothing. It resonated with me so much when you broke down what the cost for lispticks would be vs. investing in a gorgeous sweater that you will have for years to come. And it's so true, the sale doesn't mean spic savings. Thank you for the gentle reminders💕💗💕💗And your sweet little fur baby!!!! I'm in 😍 love. Adorable! Great video💕💕💕
I’m only participating in the sale this year to get refills of things I need anyway. I was super tempted to put a Kaja bento box in my cart and had to talk myself down! Perfect video to help me!
This video really helps all the other TH-camrs make it so enticing when there getting sponsored by Sephora which means all of there products were free telling everyone run don’t walk you need this! This will sell out! All of these statements make it seem that much more enticing and this time around I’m really trying to control myself and only buy what I’m about to run out of and specifically waited to bug for the sale I’m on medical leave from Disneyland so now is not the time for me to run don’t walk to spend the little bit of money I’ve got thank you for helping me be in the right mindset!
I've taken you on as spending coach, in my head. Videos like this certainly help support the mindset I want to have when it comes to my spending on beauty.
This video has arrived just in time to save me from some pre-black friday sales. Also, I would like to say that these anti-hauls type of videos are my favorites. I came for the no-buy challenge era and although makeup it's not really my thing I still keep up with the channel just to enjoy your opinions on things, so every time you post budget/finance related content I love even more.
I’ve been thinking about how odd Sephora sale recommendation videos are. If you have a few things that you want from the sale, why would you want to add more things to that list? In other words, why would you want to become tempted by a slew of new products after watching videos-products that you never considered buying in the first place?
While I don't do this with makeup because I've developed a good relationship with my purchasing now, I do this *all the time* with grocery shopping! Sales on those fancy looking jars or interesting flavor combos. I'm finally realizing just take a photo and if I still think about it and I can plan it into my meal plan, then just buy it full price WHEN I'm going to use it. It's not grim it's inspiring!!
Thank you for this video. I have been talking myself in-and-out of a HUGE purchase for weeks now and you just reiterated all the reasons why my brain was telling me NO. I am definitely going to skip out on that and spend my money on other things that will bring more to my life instead.
Oh my gosh the Painted Veil by W Somerset is SUCH a good book if you guys like to read. Now you got me wanting some art from the book, dang it! Feel better, Hannah.
I made a Sephora order a couple of days ago (the sale wouldn't start for me until next week since I'm only a humble Beauty Insider) of some stuff I'm going to need soon plus a couple things I wanted to try (one of which I chose from the point perks). For most of us who aren't at Rouge level, sales that individual brands do throughout the year are better.
Hi Hannah!! Great video this was such a well-reasoned reminder not to get sucked in by the sale tactics!! Also - my husband and I had a 6 hour drive to visit family today and we spent a good amount of time vibing in the car to your Sexotheque Spotify playlist. He's obsessed!! Thanks for everything!! Love you!!
Second comment: watched the video and I want to say thank you again. Thank you for being smart and being able to articulate it to people like me who think in my mind the sale isnt that great, but go ahead and fill my cart anyways because everyone says it's such a good deal, so it must be. I must just be missing something and maybe if I buy these things, save the money on them and get them, maybe then I will understand what a good deal it is. But I don't and I usually hate myself for it. To the point where I have even hidden the makeup I've bought from myself so I don't have to look at it and be reminded that I blew my money yet again and am broke and have to pay my phone bill from my savings account. So just thank you. I hope you really know what a big help your videos have been for me.
Just getting my favorite Skinfix cleanser and the Kaja lipgloss mini set. I’m so grateful for all your Sephora sale videos, they have helped me scale back and not go crazy.
my mom always points out a similar thing- like if you have to spend a certain amount to get free shipping, you usually end up spending more than you would have paid had you just paid shipping, or like when they dosales that are like- "buy more save more" bc the savings percentage is larger on paper, but in the end you've still spent more money overall, which is of course, exactly what they want
There’s some great info and reasoning in this vid. Went from adding a ton to cart and spending hours debating on what to get to just getting the one small thing I’ve wanted for months lol
I love this video so very much ❤️ Control is terrifying in someone else's hands. My time dwindles away as I fall down Instagram shopping holes: one tiny ad in between friends' stories triggers 30 minutes of window shopping that I didn't schedule into my life. These sales create the same lack of control--I won't allow these retailers to tell me what to buy and when to buy it!
I always love these videos, they're so practical and make so much sense! To be fair, this series changed my whole way of thinking about sales and shopping in general. Thanks for the wisdom hannah! ❤
Thank you Hannah as always for this type of content!! You and others like you are the reason I’ve gotten out of debt and now set aside a disposable income to spend and splurge on things I want. I’m in a wedding and I was going to buy a couple pair of lashes (I’m choosing to do my own makeup - I did my own for my own wedding because I know what I like and how I want it done lol). Then I saw the email about the sale, and the lashes I’m grabbing are Sephora’s brand so I saw that all of their stuff will be 30% off. So I thought “well I budgeted and planned to buy them anyways, so me saving 30% on something I was planning and budgeted to pay full price for is a great deal for me.” I also had a Rare Beauty item on my Christmas wish list for this year. So I decided since it was already on my list and allocated to the Christmas budget my husband and I set that I’d snag that too, since it’s full price was already planned and allocated for. I did start to randomly add other items that I thought “oh I’d like to use that.” And then after listening to your video it gave me a reminder: I wasn’t planning on buying this full price, nor budgeted for it, so why am I buying it just because I’ll save 15%? So I quickly removed those items lol I went from a $200 something cart back down to my $50 cart for the items I was planning on paying full price for anyways as planned 🥰 thank you as always for being that rational voice in my head that occasionally gets lost once in a blue moon lol
I need your eye look tutorial! Also you convinced me to buy some jd glow cosmetics and I’m really happy with their eyeshadows, not so much their loose highlighters. I agree that this is not a sale, a sale isn’t a sale to me unless it’s like 30 percent hahahaha. I’d LOVE to see your favorite indie highlighters and blushes btw!
I love this video. I love this conversation. I am not a Cynthia and I am not (yet) a Hannah. I have been buying too much and I am really honestly considering to have a LOW buy year. Where I only allow myself a specific budget on beauty, something like you have done that 1 year. Because I'm finding myself buying and buying and not being happy with overspending cycle. I really appreciate videos like these. It's helping me ground myself more and stop to think. So thank you. 💓
These sales are nice but kinda dangerous for me. I now have a wishlist of products that I write down and review. I try not to get swept up away in the rush of getting a 'supposedly' good deal, where in the end I spent more because everything's on a discount. There will be a new sale after Christmas or New Year, let's see if I still want the product then. Your consciousness videos really help with that. A lot of beauty YT-er had discount code so I finally did order what has been on my wishlist for a while now from Lethal cosmetics, but I limited it to 5 shadows. I made 3 makeup purchases this year and with discounts and gift cards I spent around 115$. Which is so awesome for me. The money I'm not spending, I'm saving for a little city trip around my birthday. Also since watching your style of videos and similar ones, I have a new found appreciation for what I own.
Omg I cannot wait for the video about the eyeshadow! You didn’t even finish your intro and I had to look in description to see what it was- I die! I live! You look amazing! I need the review! I’m so excited you finally got one girl!
Mee too I used to spend too much on make up and never went through what I had before buying something new. So my strategy now is, to ask myself ' do I already own something similar? ' and almost always the answer is yes.... So I give it a pass. There is always that much product you're gonna use and need, so I only buy the basics and maybe once a year only that one special extra product. And still, my drawers are fulll..... we're all different and we all have our own way to get ourselves through ... ❤️ Love your channel, btw
Yes, I never buy things at full price unless it's cheap/something I use often. Most things I got this black friday have been on my wishlist for around a year. If I can't get a sale, I'll try and get cashback.. I also keep track of what I've bought, decluttered or used up to make sure I'm using everything and don't overspend
The problem with sales & discounts is that it can give some people license to overspend because "they're saving so much." When these conversations come up & people ask for tips to keep from overspending or tamp down on impulse buys, I always suggest not buying anything on sale you wouldn't pay full price for. Wait for the hype to die down on new releases & see if you still want it in a month. Those 2 things can really help. The rest is really a matter of budget & personal consumer choices & being more aware of any triggers to overspend/impulse buy. This time of year is the toughest, we're all primed to shop till we drop for the holidays & that's when everything is on sale. But nobody needs to be paying off this year's Xmas for the next 12-14 months plus interest.
Thanks for talking me off the ledge, Hannah. I had put two items in my Sephora cart, but hadn't made the purchase yet. One was an eyeshadow palette, and the last thing I need is another eyeshadow palette. The other is an item that I have in a mini, and I will definitely be buying the full-size. But I will get a better deal by waiting for the Black Friday sale from the brand, and that will be a better time for me to buy budget-wise anyway. I am somewhat of a Cynthia when it comes to shopping sales, but when a favorite sale comes along and I have literally nothing that I need to buy, I do struggle a bit with FOMO. Thanks for helping me shore up my defenses!
I just love that I’m watching this video at this moment! I WAS heading to Sephora..I stopped myself and put a lovely flower beauty lipstick on, and love that it’s here already! I wanted that new Huda palette, and the Pat McGrath holiday palette. (I rarely reach for last years).. I will use my indie sparkly shadows, and I’m going to use some of my beautiful palettes that I already have too! I don’t NEED more makeup to save a couple of bucks. (I also have $160 in Ulta points, and $20 off coupon.. if I’m feeling desperate, I’ll go spend those)
I've been watching a lot more true crime content lately. It helps to be less submerged in beauty TH-cam. I've got a few fav beauty youtubers I'm still subscribed to and that's it. I'm in the loop but not being flooded by the loop.
A really sobering and much needed input, thank you so much for reminding me what I should have considered before splurging on items I basically do not need. I could kick myself. And because we in Denmark have lousy return policy, I am stuck with my purchases…serves me right, I guess. It was a pleasure watching you!
if you ARE one of those people who only shops at Sephora during the sale and you are doing your VERY REASONABLE shopping and you really REALLY want to know what I recommend, it's just this: shop-links.co/cfWnIIiq2wN
...and Gucci lipsticks
Ugh this product was my best discovery of 2021 🧡🧡🧡
I just had to know. I was like... is it the Gucci palette? Lol
‘…and Gucci lipsticks’ 🤣🤣. Thank you for your very inspiring content! 🌸💕
I cannot open the link as I'm in the UK and it sends me to the French Sephora landing page, please could someone let me know just for pure curiosity's sake?
Thank god I have no brows lmao
Same. I’ve been able to get some palettes at 50% off that I’ve wanted for a loooong time.
@@StefsEdge Y'all might be on to something 50% off unheard of lol. The best deal I got was getting my Natasha Denona for $90 2 Black Fridays ago.
Five of the six items currently in my cart are items I’ve run out of and use on a regular basis, and that’s a massive improvement for me 😌
Same, I get the ceo turmeric oil during this sale.
Wouldn't just going to a dermatologist be a better use of money? Tretinoin is much more effective than lactic acid. Unless of course you already do that.
They sell sundayriley at Ulta now. Ulta has a superior points system and offers sales WAY more often than Sephora.
So true! You made me laugh 😂
@@stampwithmarcee
😂
Lmfao yes!
That one made me say the same thing😂 and they suck since they switched from souq to amazon so they made me angry twice😂🥲
I would need to spend another $900 to get 20%. 😂 I spent $100 all year at Sephora.
And for me, a discount only starts to be interesting starting at 20%. I am super happy that my go to skin care brand does their own sales with up to 40% discount (Madara cosmetics)
I agree! I am a vib and spending an extra $500 to make the extra tier for an extra 5% off isn’t worth it!
I appreciate your constant emphasis on maintaining autonomy throughout this sale, any sale, this season, any season. Spending at your leisure and choice is so much more important that allowing these entities to tell us when to part with our money.
Little Smidge appearances (in almost every recent video!) are my favorite thing ever! I watch her career with great interest.
I appreciate your uniqueness in preventing my reckless spending. Every other influencer is pushing me to buy, buy, buy - even though I know I can't. And, won't. Thank you. You're a godsend wrapped in a quirky, cool-girl package! 💜
Start watching different influencers. There are a ton out there who are doing budgeting or not shopping sales. Hannah isn’t unique in that sense.
Saying that makes me so happy since I used to shop compulsively, and Sephora was a major weakness.
the second I saw the notice for this video, I breathed a grateful sigh of relief. Thank you so so much for posting this. Your voice is needed.
I would also like this!
I agree!! I love her level of description and personal expression.
It's not a 'sponsored review'...
Adding to the agreement pile
yes team cynthia!! waiting for the sale and seeing such a huge cart full of things I thought i wanted in the last 6 months is sobering and so I end up spending less than if I bought it around the moment I wanted it, so I end up just getting refills and maybe one treat instead of six. I saw someone mention this so I thought I should add that I share my account with 4 people so we end up getting 20% off even though we each spend only 200-400 a year, highly recommend!
What a fabulous idea!
24:00 “ the Sephora sale doesn’t make unaffordable things into affordable things” 💯💯💯💯
hannah, this idea is brilliant. the title, the concept.. seriously. One of your best!!! the way this is framed is so perfect and impactful during this sale time for makeup lovers
thank you, Paulina!
My favorite thing you ever said about any sale is that if I'm not willing to pay full price I don't need it or probably even want it. It really sticks with me and reframes my urge to splurge!
And Gucci Lipsticks!
1) THANK YOU for being honest and telling me I don't NEED to shop Sephora sale and 2) your eyeshadow looks stunning!
Yes, this is why I avoid walmart and will often go to Walgreens instead.
(And the same goes for free shipping after spending a certain amount but that’s a whole topic for another day)
I love that Smidge has doubled in size and is still the tiniest little kitty ever 🖤🖤🖤🖤
The way you use words is so poetic! I really enjoyed this video a lot, you made some really good points. Cheers to you from the east coast! 🖤
So glad you posted this, I was hoping you would. I was getting so tempted but I don’t need a blessed thing.
Smidge is sooo precious!! The tiny panther, my world!!
We lost our kitty this week, and it was so sweet and comforting to see little Smidge over there. Thank you.
I'm so sorry. Sending love and Smidge snuggles
your videos at sale season are always refreshing, but i feel like especially so this year -- i've seen so many (shameless) ads for sephora by youtubers this year. i've started skipping the sale in the past couple years thanks to you and thank god! i am *not* noticing that i'm going broke from buying the things i really want at full price (or steeper discounts than sephora ever offers --i'm a cynthia much of the time), and i'm also not hurting for more makeup, or less satisfied with my life than I would be if i spent hundreds at the sale the way i used to. it's a scam!!
Okay that eye look. Absolutely stunning. Can't wait for the review video on this!
I know this doesn’t help at all, but I would truly love to watch you review the Gucci lipsticks you want 😆
With overhead swatches AND close ups of the packaging 🤤
If Gucci doesn’t send them ALL her way….😭😭😭
@@Gorditavont33se GUCCI SEND HANNAH HER LIPSTICKS!!!!
Do you have items now to suffice?" It's not always easy because we all get caught up in the marketing of "this item will change your life"
Sometimes they do, but not always.
“My lips but paler and deader” 😂😂 this is literally the perfect description for lip color shades that don’t work with my skin tone
Yep…me too!
Hannah I was waiting for you to stop me!!!! Thank you!!!!
This makes sense. You’re still spending something and In the end you’re not getting ahead. Btw I love your eye look!
Love you!!
YES I still have not stopped listening to it! I was listening to it today! Probably at the same time as you :)
this is from so long ago, but i'm obsessed with the gucci mattes. the undertones make every shade SO entrancing.
i have louise orange in matte and it's PERFECTION. a truly unique color.
Same!!!
I was looking at that paloma wool sweater just the other day! So fun that you got it, it looks lovely
Thank you, Hannah. And hello, Smidge!
I relate WAYYY to much to your fantasy Gucci lipstick shopping cart…..🤣😅
Wow! Here early! Just the reminder I needed Hannnah 😀
on point! i appreciate your practical wisdom and the calm in the Sephora “event” storm.
Smidge is precious, and her collar is perfection!
I’m a Cynthia. I load up on stuff I need all year on black friday. I try to avoid buying nonurgent things otherwise.
A really sobering and much needed input, thank you so much for reminding me what I should have considered before splurging on items I basically do not need. I could kick myself. And because we in Denmark have lousy return policy, I am stuck with my purchases…serves me right, I guess. It was a pleasure watching you!
Your makeup looks absolutely beautiful in this. So flattering
