I watched 2 or 3 videos from your channel before but this video got me subbed

  • @rainy463
    @rainy463 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With this change, I am excited for you, but I also realize little will change from my viewing perspective. I didn't pop off every time I saw a video of yours in my subbox because I'd see some cool new study or learn a bit of the brain behind things I've never thought about. That was always something I found incredibly cool and interesting, but the reason I'm so attached to this channel is something far less quantifiable.
I watch a lot of essayists on TH-cam, but of them all, you are one of a very small handful that has made me tear up, or even just straight up cry from watching a video, and you are the only one to get me to do so again upon rewatching a video. There's something about your cadence, your storytelling, the summaries at the ends of videos with perfect music, editing, understanding and soul.
It's probably weird, but I think my favorite video of yours is genuinely "Failure - Game from the Heart." I can't explain it, but it gives the same feeling as a good cry, and usually elicits one. A tensing of the body, the warm rush hurt and fear, and slowly just letting it out, like turning a release valve to just decompress in a very real way. So while the Psych of Play may be coming to a close, I'm certain the true "Soul of Play" that I've been watching and feeling this entire time won't be going anywhere, so the only thing that changes here is that I am happy for you and the freedom it will give you.
While this definitely isn't failure, I'm sure it's providing plenty of heat and pressure, enough to make you unconquerable, and I can't wait to see you really let your colors shine.

Ok first off, that was one of the most well written video essays I've seen. I can only think of a hand full of videos that have captured and kept my attention like that.
Second, have you considered keeping Psych of Play as just a series? Obviously I totally understand wanting to sort of broaden your horizons content-wise. But even if only 1 out of every 10 videos focuses heavily on psychology in video games, I personally don't see why you couldn't still throw the Psych of Play label on it and put it in a specific playlist. Obviously not trying to tell you what you should do. I'm just curious is all

I had to do that quite a while back when I decided to stop requiring myself to attribute a video game's ideas to a specific philosopher or field of philosophy. And allowing my own experiences drive the writing allowed me to write through my lens of philosophy more broadly and more authentically. I like when bad endings actually help expand on a character’s personality or motivations that actually aren’t seen in the good ending. Putting them in the worst case scenario and seeing how they react to it is something only games can do.
Also, I’m excited to see what you have planned for the future.

    • @HarmoneaSinn
      @HarmoneaSinn ปีที่แล้ว +115

This is the true fun of bad endings for me, too. Every character, if written believably, has a breaking point. It's incredibly interesting to see what circumstances are enough to finally break your favorites, and how they change when that happens.
Fiction gives us a safe, cathartic space to explore what happens when the worst comes to pass, like Daryl covers in his videos on the peace of being lost or the helplessness of Deepnest, and bad endings are a fiction within that fiction - in actual canon, everything is fine.

This is a major part of it for me too, and it's why I love games like visual novels that have distinct routes. You might have one whole plot where you're in the antihero's shadow, trying to get on his level but prove him wrong -- and then another whole route where this fixture in your character's life _dies,_ and you have to see who you'd be without him.

As someone who enjoys story-driven games, I really like optional bad endings. Unfortunately, the games I play usually don't feature such thing ^^' Majora's Mask is the best example for this, Skyward Sword has something for it, too. The only other Zelda-game with a proper bad ending is Minish Cap of all things... I wish Zelda-games would go this route more often!

Bad endings are just a conjecture. So are good endings. Until anything hapens... it's anyone's game. Just as things can go wrong, they can go well. No one can tell until the outcome has been revealed.
Believe me, I'm autistic and have anxiety too. I take the worst case scenario as a posibility, but not as the only possibility. The anxiety is the bitchy saboteur. I once was in the same situation as you... big hug ny friend.

You're FANTASTIC at those to the point where I know anything from you is going to be interesting, even when it's on a topic I don't care about. I do hope you'll still continue to break down analytically games in the same way, even if not from a psychological lens, because I enjoy how I always seem to learn something new from your videos, but tbh if you just want to like talk about how incredible X or Y was and gush for a while that's cool too. While I will say that I will miss Psych of Play, I'm glad you're going to do what you feel is right. I found this channel due to my interest in Psychology, but I stayed because of your personality and even your voice. I watch whenever something from you pops up anyway, it's a soothing thing for me. I'll miss psychology but I'm happy you're going to go in a direction which you'll feel more free to discover yourself, at the end of the day, you've amassed a following who want you to be happy and will enjoy whatever you do. Good luck with it all and I can't wait to see what you do!
In terms of the actual video, I find that I replay one specific memory over and over again, the same 'what ifs'. This memory was when I had my first semi serious motorcycle crash. I remember slipping and losing control of the bike, being flung over a curb and having my head on the road while my body was on the paving, then I remember looking up at a wheel of an 18 wheeler that was passing by safely on the other side of the road. Everything goes through my mind whenever I approach that corner now but I'm more confident then ever, but what if? What if I had gone an inch or two further? what if I had hit a car? what if I had serious injuries besides a messed up ankle? what if I hadn't insisted on my full gear? What if I had a bad ending? All these go through my mind but then I return to reality and realise I'm okay. I think that's what I do it for, remembering that I am okay.

My favorite Bad Ending of a game ever is Persona 3. It's not the most obvious ending but soooo much goes wrong. Yukari's line about not caring what you want with your life, neither Junpei nor Yukari knowing how they met, Aigis clearly remembering you but not being able to bear looking you in the eye, Mitsuru's speech about her father dying from an illness despite it very obviously feeling wrong, and the fact that they all die with no one knowing or expecting it while it's coming. Especially with the fact that Ken dying without remembering what happened to his mother. It's just such a perfect fuster cluck of every thing that could possibly go wrong from memory erasure and oh my god I just love it so much

    • @MidniteSpectre
      @MidniteSpectre 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I believe the best thing about it is that its a choice. You can choose that ending. It wasn't beought about by branching flowcharts of decisions, but just one single choice, and it tells you very clearly what happens if you make this choice.
It is understandable, being told that this is the natural state of things, that this was inevitable and that resistance is futile.

I remember the time slowdown of my accident in a brand new mustang in 2000 when I was 16 (I wasn't the driver)
I remember when this past November I caught pneumonia in a hospital and for 8 hours no one checked on me as one lung collapses partially, I remember wondering why I was so wet all of a sudden (I'd had a 105 degree fever for a while) I remember colorful weird hallucinations turning dark as my blood saturation went from 97% to 60%
I remember finally getting pushed to some other area as someone was yelling "how long has he had this fever?"
" We're going to have to intubate"
"Anyone know if he's an organ donor?"
"Oh Jayk, hey buddy you're still with us?! Ok what's going to happen is going to be traumatic, so we're going to put you in a dreamless sleep"
    "His temperature is rising"
"I'm sorry buddy you're going to lose this sweatshirt"(cloth tearing)
Some weird dark figure in the corner of the room is laughing and pointing at me(I'm like 99.9% sure this was a hallucination)
    "Where's the propofol?"
    "Hit him again"
(Proceeds to a dream in this "dreamless sleep")
Wake up for a moment nude on my side with a nurse starting to scream something
"Hit him again"(with propofol I assume)
And every other stupid moment I almost died that I remember in better detail than meeting my wife, or my wedding
Those little moments in time where everything slows down as even if you don't realize it consciously you're brain knows "hey I might die here, so let's absorb every stupid detail possible"
Of course that part of the brain doesn't think "maybe I shouldn't, they'll remember this for the rest of their life if they don't die, having excruciating detail to pour over and make them have nightmares about
Conversely there's those moments where something happens while driving, and it's minor(like a semi directly to your right gets in your lane) or when you consider slamming the breaks instead of going through a "just turned yellow light" only for someone to fly across who would have hit you, that make your body shiver and shudder for a moment then instantly forget about what happened

I SERIOUSLY love this channel alot. Hands down my favorite no questions asked and will to this day be the only one i buy merch from.
However i feel like you are limiting yourself a little by not doing psych of play anymore.
I cannot imagine anyone minding you making other kinds of content but if you ever see something (a study or whatever) that actually would make a fun video without "shackling" you don't feel discouraged to make it since you "ended" psych of play.
I guess the TL;DR is that feel free to do whatever you feel like since you are absolutely amazing and i will probably watch whatever you feel like uploading regardless.

Dude, don't compare yourself to other people so much (or as you said "similar / identical" channels).
You're already unique because of your personality, not the way you narrate or talk, but in the way you think.
Psychology, a field I respect, is just another tool that allows you to talk about topics you select from another angle, it doesn't define your channel or being.
Even students pick their favorite teachers based on teacher's personality, not their job position.

CFT and it’s extreme, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD, and it’s counter, escapist daydreams. One and the same, from the same parts of the brain, but different goals.
The first helps you learn and move on, the second keep you stuck in unreality. And none none of it- NONE- is true. Just thoughts that loop. CFT, leading to PTSD, leads to escapist thoughts/behavior, leads to nothing changing until you find a way out of your head, and so you fall back into CFT, and loop.
It’s a good mental tool, but a trap in the extreme. So hard to break out on your own…

Let's be real dude, when I first started watching this channel it took me a few episodes to realize Psych of Play wasn't just the name and actually (consistently) about psychology. I was looking for game design/development analysis videos and you just kinda popped up. I follow a lot of those TH-camrs and they're not really all that unique. What really draws me to new videos is if I think a game I like will be featured. So basically I'm not going anywhere, you're doing great

I genuinely super enjoy bad endings for what having an unhappy ending, and I almost always prefer them over the good endings. I *like* when things go horribly wrong despite your character's best efforts, the villain(s) win, and things are worse off for it. And it's all your fault, because there *is* a better ending. Maybe it's because I had an incredibly abusive mother. Maybe it's because I expect failure. Maybe I'm just messed up in the head.
The perfect example for what I find great (and look, I typed this up for a now-rewritten response that this doesn't fit in at all but I will share this anyway because it's great) is 3/10 Visual Novel Bible Black that has the protag be either good or evil depending on whether or not he has sex for a favour: one ending called White Room has the protag be good, and he and another character go up against the villain the protag would've sided with if he didn't have sex, and they're hopelessly outclassed. They're only able to live through each situation they're put in by quick thinking, abusing the fact that they're drastically weaker than their opponent and thus underestimated, and determination. They get to the villain right before it's too late, the other character pulls out a gun...and can't shoot, since it's her fault the villain *is* the villain.
After that, it's too late, the villain's plot happens and she wins. But the next day, the protag takes that very gun, shoots the villain in the head, and then turns himself in, knowing nothing he says can justify it to anyone but him. He's locked in a psych ward, but he's satisfied that he stopped the villain. One day, he gets a visitor: it's the villain, and she survived the gunshot because failing to stop her plan meant she was now unkillable. And the only person that knows and can even consider stopping her is locked in a white room.
That game is not remotely good, but that ending has never left me, and I consider it a fantastic work of fiction, against all odds.

The bad ending I love the most is from Pikmin. Something about being stuck on a foreign planet, knowing that you have no way of heading back home, but still having to try.
Then you realize that even if you try, you won't make it back. You fall back down, knowing that you'll die either in the crash, or lack of breathable air, with you family never knowing where you are or what happened to you.
It is, of course, cut off by a funny cutscene to lighten the mood, but the final results screen does show before that. That, and the music that plays during then makes me feel really reflective of my life.

I think that, in the context of videogames, bad ending are also a bit of a power trip for the player. Knowing how differently things could end if we did things differently just make our ability to make things end the way that we want them to more impactful, makes us even more of the driver of our own story (which is just kind of the appeal of videogames in general). The idea that things can only end well if you want them to also gives the idea that things can only end poorly if we want them to.
